Urban App Competition: 5k prize + int'l press coverage - Your Portfolio

Hi everyone!
I am (co)running an international app competition called AppMyCity!
(just search it for website - prevented from posting it here as a new user)
Would anyone here like to apply/know anyone they think should apply/inform me where I could best find more great app developers?
Here is a quick outline of the competition:
The 10 best apps will be passed on to a panel of 10 international judges (incl venture capitalists, angel investors, tech journalists etc) and are likely to be covered by our media partner Guardian Cities.
The 3 selected apps will be invited to do a presentation at the New Cities Summit in Dallas, Texas June 17-19. This event brings together over 800 world leading urban decision makers (including CEO's, mayors, venture capitalists, and academics) as well as over 100 journalists, meaning you will get a LOT of visibility. We pay for your flights and hotel.
Audience at the summit does a live vote, and the winner gets a $5000 cash prize.
Who can apply?
Any app that fulfils the following three requirements:
Be Urban - With a broad focus on improving cities an/or life in cities.
Be Mobile - Available on iOS, Android, Windows Phone, or Web-based mobile apps
Be New - Launched AFTER January 1st 2013, and available to the public BEFORE May 5th 2014 (Apps with heavy updates and/or major changes after the January 1st are also eligible)
You can apply via our website , applications close April 18 - the submission form is really short and easy to fill in.
It would be great to have as many people applying, and I honestly think it is a really awesome opportunity for budding app developers.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me (here or via the website). We've also created an FAQ page.

Do we need to be based in the US? Any city-specific requirement?
Hi,
I have an app to suggest. I'm not its developer but I know who they are and would like to recommend this. A few questions:
- Does the organization need to be based in the US or do we you need to be an American citizen?
- Can an app in languages other than English apply if it can clearly show the benefits with regard to the prize?
- If someone based outside the US wins, does he/she need to travel to the location in order to claim the prize?
Thank you

Hello,
The app does not need to be based in the US, nor the developer an American citizen.
We welcome apps in any language.
If the app is selected as a finalist, then the developer(s) will need to travel to Dallas. We will cover the costs of travel and provide the relevant documents for visa applications.
Hope this answers your questions, and please do encourage them to apply!

[Q] 3th party markets

Since I've uploaded my App to the market, I receive emails about uploading my App to other markets too. For example this email I've received yesterday:
Hi ,
My name is *...*, from business department of Ndoo Networks. We are a company that operates 3rd party Android app market in China. We both realize China is a market of great potential, and there are already over 6,000,000 Android users in China. Now we are searching for the co-developers to make the Android market in China more brilliant.
We devote to bringing convenience and giving better service to our users. Till now we are generating a total of 5,000,000 downloads per month. The strengths we have now include:
--Diversified access to Phone, Web and desktop.
--App downloads 50% faster than Android Market.
--Value-added services to developers, including function test, security check etc.
--Operating an active user community including solutions for common issues using Android apps.
Meanwhile, the opportunities we see for you are:
--Expose your apps to millions of Android users.
--Expose your apps to many device makers in China who badly need excellent apps to get preinstalled.
--Ad-supported apps to generate income.
--Application proxy.
If you are interested to opt in our platform to distribute your apps, reply this email to authorize us the distribution rights. By default it is non-exclusive authorization.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers,

Are there issues (read: legal issues) when you upload your app to other markets and / or is it smart to do. Because I get the feeling, just a feeling, that not all of these markets have the right intentions with the App provided by unknowing developers.
Are you upload your app to other markets too. If so, what website/markets do you upload your app.
Mod Edit: Moved to Q&A
Obviously all different countries will have different app stores and be impossible to keep track of all of them. However obviously the well known ones are Amazon Appstore and Android market (duh). Outside of the US there are too many to count small and big. However, you can do a couple searches on the internet and see for yourself if it doesnt look shady and trustable enough.
Personally as a Korean I know for a fact that T-Store in korea is huge with dominating market share and since Korea's smart phone market is pretty big you could try getting your app uploaded there. However, I'm not too sure about how it works for foreigners but if you are interested just PM and I'll do my best to help out. I really like your app and I think its a brilliant idea. Cheers.
I received a similar email and all I can tell is stay away from them.
They are not a legit market. All piracy.

Thanks for your reply and compliment for my App. I'm definitly gonna look into the T-Store you're talking about.
I got the same email too, and found this thread by Googling a sentence from this email
All of my Apps are there, free & paid ones, without my approval.
It seems like piracy in China is a common practice, and I'm not sure what can be done against it.

Seems? Come on! Let's all be honest here, we all know China is the number 1 in piracy, copying, not giving a f*ck about copyrights and so on. Whether is about fake iPhones, fake stores, mod chips, fake 2TB HDDs, fake apps, copied apps, fake everything and copied everything, etc. The world itself is there, either fake or copied. And there's nothing the rest of the world can do about it, since they don't have the copyright laws we have. If I were you, I wouldn't trust in giving my app to neither a Chinese nor a Sweden store (Sweden stores are a tad more controlled than Chinese stores, but still )
In my country, we call China "el rey de los plagios" (the king of copying/fakes/etc).

Bluetooth Apps

Hello
I am new to this forum so will probably ask some rather stupid questions, for this I apologise in advance.
I am a final year product design student looking for some help with the development of an app for my exhibition stand. I am looking for some one to make an app which will be able to communicate with a bluetooth device. The app will be used on a smart phone to notify the user when the first device gives a signal. I will have all the visuals sorted out. I know this description is pretty vague but do not want to explain my entire project on this forum for reasons of confidentiality.
I will be exhibiting my work at two large shows this summer in Edinburgh and London with over 10,000 and 20,000 visitors expected respectively meaning great promotional opportunities for any one who helps me out.
Thank you
Gregor

I am currently looking for a freelance developer who, if can deliver, stands to gain a lucrative repeat-customer. Solar is booming, and I have been developing an App for one of the largest solar sales and installation companies in the state of New York. Our company has attempted to deploy technology to our outside sales lead generation team, but without much effect. The key missing ingredient in their puzzle is an easy-to-use, efficient, and stream-lined interface in which to seamlessly record data into our Salesforce database. I have conceptualized this project in great detail, and have even begun developing it myself using an Android Studio environment. I have successfully used the Salesforce Mobile SDK to log-in to our test.salesforce server, and have also successfully received data from our test server onto my tablet. I also have a working satellite-google maps, but am in dire need of an experienced developer to help bring this project to completion.
Ultimately, the plan is to provide an offline-capable version, utilizing the Salesforce SmartSync and SmartStore features provided by the SDK, but in order to prove the utility of this application to people at the company with the ‘ink-felt pen’, I plan on three phases of development. First, a internet-reliant version of the application, which can upload data into Salesforce in real-time, from the field. We will then deploy the app during phase two, in order to generate user-feedback and trouble-shooting support, while we gear up for phase three, the offline-capable version. The offline-version gives the ability for us to grow our lead generation team without having to provide everyone a monthly data-plan. It is the icing on the cake to the big-wigs of this project.
I am available 24/7 via Skype.

Ireland Needs A GAA App.....

Having lived in the Republic Of Ireland for nearly a year now I realise just how important the Gaelic Games of Hurling and Football are to these wonderful people. Unfortunately they are poorly informed via the official GAA app. There is one called GAH which simply shows fixtures/results but the country is crying out for a more informative app. I have searched everywhere and been unable to discover one...if someone out there knows of such a beast then please let me know. All that is basically really required is the ability to select favourite teams to follow, view previous results and forthcoming fixtures but most importantly also list the TV channels these games are to be broadcast on.
Anybody out there looking for an app project should seriously consider this as a golden opportunity because the response to anyone able to provide a detailed Gaelic Games app would be staggering.....
Thanks for reading
