KitKat build but KitKat modem doesn't work - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Can someone experienced with modems help me please! I'm flashed to Boost, rooted, on KitKat using Freeza's Hybrid ROM with a MJ4 modem. When I updated to KitKat my phone had a 'Red X', so I had to get help to get that straightened out. Even with the NAB Engineering Bootloader flashed I still can't use the NAB modem, I get a 'Red X'. Now the NC5 is floating & I wanna be able to use that & any KitKat modem. Is there a way to configure my phone in a way that I can enjoy these modems or am I stuck with the MJ4? Thank you to all in advance!!

I'm not experienced with modems, but I am very experienced with flashing Sprint phones to Boost, and as it currently stands, there's no way to get the NAB or NC5 modems to work on a flashed Sprint Note 3. There's something programmed within them that causes your PRL to turn to 1 and that causes a Red X to appear near the signal bar. There's also no way to get the NAB or NC5 operating systems to work on a flashed Sprint Note 3 without having the MJ4 modem flashed to the phone. Otherwise, you'll get the the Red X and PRL 1, but at least flashing the MJ4 modem is a solution to get the Sprint Note 3 to work. There's currently no solution available for the Sprint Galaxy 5 .
After flashing my Sprint Galaxy 5 to Boost, my PRL changed to 1, and a Red X appeared near my signal bar. I can even do PRL & Profile Updates over WiFi, but I can't pick up any kind of a signal from the network. At this point, I'm stuck and don't know what to do. It looks like some one who's experienced with modems is gonna have to intervene in order for this issue to be resolved. Any help that anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

[Q] Please help. Need to downgrade

I upgraded my note to 4.4.2 with freeza rom. I have my phone flashed to a different service provider (other then sprint) I found out that 4.4.2 is not compatible with the flash. Anytime my device is flashed then my phone has no service. It has a red x on the service bars. If I can downgrade my phone then I will regain service and be able to use my device. If I can't downgrade then you can say I just have a paper weight.

From what I have read, it is possible (not confirmed), you need to flash the engineered bootloader, then you can downgrade to na4 and then back to mj4...i have not seen anyone try it yet, you might be the first to try... Check out freezas threads and follow them. I believe if you read the leak thread he created, the steps are there. Good luck!

You are going to need the engineered bootloader first, then you might be able to down grade to the na4, once you do that, hopefully it will let you go back to mj4... I'll grab a couple more links for you...

I can't seem to find them from my phone, if you do a search in the threads, look for na4 tar and mj4 tar, if you can successfully get back to na4, you will need to flash mj4 twice, after the second flash, go straight into stock recovery and do a wipe and then it will start back up... Like I said, best of luck man. And read the forums, you don't want to risk bricking.

Shyne888,
You're on Boost Mobile right? You upgrade to 4.4.2 and you have completely no signal right? You can't go back to older bootloader, samsung made sure of that.
But you can downgrade your MODEM to get the signal back.

Someone said Mobile Odin is not recommended for flashing modems. You should be using PC Odin to attempt this.
And...why do you need to know into what slot a modem goes?
I believe that the files that are part of this process are bootloaders, tar roms and pit files (if you're going from 4.3 to 4.4.2). Bootloader is contained in the complete rom builds NAB, NA4 and MJ4. No modem. The bootloader, if using, goes on bootloader slot. Rom goes in PDA slot.
I hope this helps.
Good luck.

I asked because i felt that the modem was the problem from all that i have done and been thru wit this phone. Anyway...
I inserted the modem from the link provided on this thread. http://goo.gl/W0f3Za. (The post on this thread that provided the link to the MJ4 modem was no longer on their server/cloud.
I inserted the file in the phone slot and pressed start. Odin got stuck at first attempt. While the phone was stuck i closed Odin and held down the DL mode keys and reentered DL mode. I tried Odin again and it went thru. It reset and worked. I have call with text (No MMS or Data). Old texts that came when i was without service which was a week came back as well.
I encountered what seemed to be a hard brick thru out this process and with flashing CF Root thru Odin. My phone would show the recovery message and show the samsung logo and then it would boot loop and do that over and over. I wasn't able to boot into DL mode and i couldn't get it to stop automatically rebooting and do the same thing over again. I had to take the battery out. After leaving the battery out for 2 minutes the phone stopped auto booting and i was able to get the phone into DL mode.
Once i got into DL mode CF-Auto-Root-hlte-hltexx-smn9005.zip file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2466423 with the Odin file provided worked. The CF Root for this phone does not work for this phone for some reason.

My phone came on 4.3. But I'm already on 4.4.2. My problem was that updating to the Kit Kat update on a Sprint MVNO network would knock out service. And i have done a lot to try and fix this phone for the last week and this is the only thing that worked to get the service back. Two store i took the phone to couldn't get it to work. My question now is: Would this be the best modem for me to be on?

Ok, I have a Rogers note that I unlocked and was moving it over to mobilicity.

It has to be in download mode for odin to recognize it. Look through the forum for the stock rogers firmware download and flash in odin when in download mode. After flash cwm in odin and root. If your worried about flash counter u can download and flash the flash counter reset in cwm. I've had my flash counter up to around 70 so I don't think youll have problems

Nice. The network speed can be a number of things. Like coverage, proximity to antenna, and network capabilities. What is the parent company of mobilicity? Also take into mind that carriers do throttle network speed when u reach a cap.

Telus is mobilicity's paremy company if that merger went through.
Brand new data usage so no cap hit yet. It's because the Rogers notes frequencies aren't the same and I am in the process of changing the modem on the phone which will increase network speed again.
Just need to not **** it up this time, lol.
But jelly bean update is next. Gingerbread is a pain in my ass and extremely slow. Then rooting because to change the modem I need to be rooted.

[Q] Lost root, maxed out binary counter help?

I rooted my stock s4 using saferoot then flashed a kitkat 4.4.2 rom. When the new rom booted up i had lost root. I have since maxed out my binary counter trying to get back to 4.3 mk2 i think? which is what my phone came with. Now im stuck with this rom i dont want, i cant seem to root it using saferoot or motochopper. All this and im getting the yellow triangle which i cant use triangle away on because i dont have root. I used odin to flash the roms, ive tried different ones that were 4.3 but odin keeps failing i think because of my binary counter. Is there a way to reset the counter without root??

There aren't any 4.4 roms that you can flash outside of a leaked one and you can only do that doing specific steps unless you had a mdk phone or a dev phone....not sure what you did bit sounds like you have messed up. .

My phone works fine now. here is my kernel and build info now, on the 4.4.2
Kernel: 3.4.0 [email protected]#1 tue mar 11 20:52:21 KST 2014
Build # KOT 49H.I545VRUFNC2
What i did was simply rooted using saferoot, then i used odin 3.07 to flash a kitkat rom for sch I545. Rebooted and when it came on I noticed i didnt have root access so i wanted to go back to stock. I downloaded a stock 4.3 and odin would fail at the FAIL AUTH part, thus bricking my phone. I then reflashed the 4.4.2 rom and it installed. Ive tried different 4.3 roms, even with a PIT file and it still fails. Like i said it works fine, i would just like to go back to stock 4.3. I think my main problem is that I cant seem to get rooted again and i dont know why. Thanks for helping a n00b!

Hey we weren't trying to be jerks.. Just give as many details as you can which led you To here and I'm sure one of us can help.
There's just a lot of people who come on here daily that if they read up a little more they wouldn't be in a tight spot.
If your phone is working fine on the NC2 build but you just rather MK2... then the first link I gave you is a method to downgrade I believe. Now I haven't done it myself but looking at it it's not for the faint of heart and you need to be good with Odin. Maybe start there and ask if in your situation it's even possible to do that .. I'm not 100% as to the steps needed

As I said...if you had read beforehand you would have know you can't fully revert to 4.3 after flashing that 4.4 image in odin
Update! 4.3 and rooted
I got some help and then i went HERE and now im back on 4.3 with a build of vruemk2. Im also rooted so i made progress. However according the the thread i followed, you have to use some bypasslkm file to get WIFI to work. WTF? i have no idea what im doing. I tried to follow the directions given, by using terminal emulator but i cant figure it out. I cant even find the data/local/tmp folder it says to put the bypasslkm into. Thats where im at now, but something has to be done because i NEED WIFI.

I wasn't sure if Surges downgrade method would work here... But I'm assuming since this user seems to have simply Odin the NC2 on his phone rather than the update to NC2 and have root method... That he's SOL for now.
Thanks for clearing it up

Surges method is meant to fix his situation I believe... But there are as always things that cannot be overwritten...he will be able to switch back to 4.3 but certain things from 4.4 are permanent and I think have caused some issues for those who reverted.
Forget it
Forget this crap, im just gonna sell it back on ebay and get another one.

Check swappa.com for an MDK base S4 if you want more freedom. They've come down on price quite a bit

[Q] No In Call Audio

Hello,
I am new to this forum but am in need of help. After I flashed the latest CM11 for my s4 there has been no audio when I receive a call. I can force close the app and then open it and put on speaker and there will be audio only through the speaker. When I turn off speaker, the screen goes black and there is no more audio. I have tried reverting back to stock and it didn't work. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I am running on MDK and was wondering if updating to ME7 would fix it? But I am unsure and want a better opinion than my own. Thank you for the help!
Go back to your previous backup...do not update your base build.

I screwed myself on that one, my last backup is after this happened. I figured going back to stock through ODIN would do the trick, however, still no luck.

Did you use this Odin MDK file http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2289325
That's the full wipe one and usually people have had better luck with this one..You didn't update your bootloader past MDK did you?

Maybe try flashing the MDK non-hlos modem from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46550751
I'm not really sure myself.. Have you tried any other ROMs to see if the problem persists?

Re-rooted and installed TWRP recovery. Flashed the Non-HLOS and still persists. Then installed Hyperdrive RLS 15 and nada.....
Reinstalled CM11 and called my voicemail. No sound and phone app does not respond to touches. I can't switch to speaker or dial numbers on the pad during a call nor can I hang up.

Jeeeez man that just plain sucks huh?!
I don't know what else to say myself. You've done all different Odin files the MDK modem and different ROMs.
Someone smarter than I hopefully will see this and add something maybe I'm just not thinking of..
Some ROMs I've ran recently that worked great for me were Liquid Smooth, Mahdi, and AICP . not sure if trying even more ROMs would be worth it but I'd be trying I'm sure lol.

Verizon N900VVRUDNK1 : Do not flash other modems or you will lose data connection.

Hey you all
Today I tried flashing different modems to my Verizon N900VVRUDNK1 via Odin that I have found here on XDA and Andriod forums in order to get better signal since I only get 3 bars. Well, after flashing the first modem my phone lost connectivity , no signal, no network connection and it keeps rebooting . So thanks to Hsbadr here on XDA he had our NK1 modem , I reflash the nk1 modem and now I'm back in business. It seems that once on nk1 modem you cannot downgrade .
Thanks for sharing this information. I could have sworn I saw other people in the forums talking about flashing other modems. Curious if anyone else has this same issue. I myself have not flashed any modems since the LP update.
Running 4.4.2, and no trouble flashing between NC3, NK1 and the Lollipop modem.

Where are you seeing the OB6 modem tar? I found them up to NK1 but not the Lollipop modem.
*EDIT* Found it in the Jasmine thread, Post #9684
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60178468&postcount=9684
*EDIT 2*
Flashed OB6 and it seems to perform poorly. Flashed to MJE and it seems to be better than NK1 or OB6. YMMV

Yeah, I wasn't that impressed with OB6, went back to NK1. Will have to give MJE a shot.

I am not impressed with the Note3 radio performance at all. I drop calls and data where several other phones can hang on.
With good signal, then it is fine. When you get to low signal areas, then it underperforms.
Once you are on Stock unrooted firmware 4.4.4 you will not be able to change basebands./modems. I have read here on XDA that you can only downgrade firmware from lollipop 5.0 back to NK1 firmware . Signal reception is still the same though.

You're going to have to completely wipe the phone and reload from a stock image via Odin.

Where did you get the idea you can flash any old firmwares and expect them to work with other software components? You're lucky you haven't bricked your phone. If a non-working modem is your biggest problem, you're lucky. The state of your phone is unreliable. Do as the previous poster says and start from scratch. You probably have lost root ability I'm afraid.
