[Q] if water damages my z2? - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dont panic people no damage yet, lol. Basically im getting a z2 on monday and im not gonna be able to resist dropping it in my mates fishtank while recording 120fps video...... but im wondering, if for whatever reason my phone isnt actually fully waterproof and develops a fault as a result of coming into contact with water (either now or further down the line, gonna have it for 2 years minimum), how easy would it be to get fixed/replaced?

Totally depends of Sony's policy in the country you live.
Now where I live, Sony will have to replace it if it gets water damaged or even run over by a truck within a 6 months period.

Really you'd get it replaced if it got ran over by a truck?????
I shoulda stated im in uk, phones are usually covered (as is everything else electrical) by 1 year warranty, basically if it develops a fault within a year should get fixed for free, however when it comes to phones theres normally a clause, if your phone shows signs of water damage then its not covered.
In theory as the z2 is waterproof the warranty should cover it, and if i do ever need have anything fixed because of water it should be a simple repair or replace........ but in reality, theres always some kind of catch

I asked my brother-inlaw to demonstrate his Z1 under water, he told me he didn't want to risk it as water damage wasn't covered!

From what I understand, water damage IS covered (im in uk too by the way), unless the ports have been left open when submersing into water (think there is going to be a check here to see).
Tests should show that water is entering elsewhere in the phone when sony have the phone gor repair. My phone will be going swimming with me, worst case scenario, I have phone insurance through bank.

See this is the sort of thing im on about, so it should be simple enough, what if for example, it turns out the covers for the ports arent manufactured properly, so they let water in?..... as i said theres always a catch, im still gonna record my mates fishies in slow mmo hd, i just think if it does develop a fault it aint gonna be as simple as it should be to get repaired

Yeah lol You don't know about it?
The 6 months accidental damage protection on premium Sony devices.
Each and every Xperia phone priced above 20k is covered under accidental damage protection in India. And from what I've heard from users, if your phone gets damaged, they give you a new one within a day.

Yes, unfortanately, its a very sticky situation, they tell you its waterproof and ifbit fails it vould be a fight. However, lab tests should be able to pick up exactly where the water is entering, or you could just get someone who does not take his job so seriously and just replaces it, without problem.

hmmmm, think i should try getting in touch with sony for this one

My Xz2 did have water damage last 2 weeks.
When i going to beach, i try to take some video.
At 1st is all normal and is ok.
Then i go to the pool.. then i wash it with the pipe water...
after finish.....suddenly restart....i dunno wat happen...after tat....
can turn it on.... only vibrate 3 times....
And is dry after 2 days....
Then yesterday i go test again.... try to put into normal water for 1 min, just 1 min....
water damage again :crying::crying:
Both time my flaps also close tight. I really dunno how the water went in....
now i need to wait for it to dry again
I got shake it a bit, got some water come out inside.....
Now i got no choice to wait it dry....then format it n bring to SONY.
I cant bring directly now, as my phone is root.....
scare later they say no claim as after root....
Or i can still claim my warranty even i root? since now cant turn on....they wont know, is it?

A company is releasing a waterproof phone this year, cant remember who it is, I thought it was LG.
Yeah the company is called Liquipel and they sell this spray that coats all the components with this thin coating of whatever it is, but still don't know if S3 has it, but since Samsung isn't shouting about it I'm guessing not.

Of course there is. Xperia active to name one.
This liquipel technology might not work that well.
Leo Laporte of the twit network (www.twit.tv) threw an iphone that was given this liquipel coating into a glass of water and it stopped working.
The s3 might be ok with a splash of water or even a short dip into it, but only if you are lucky. I'm sure its not waterproof and you would likely loose your warranty if it got wet and you wanted a repair.

No S3's gonna be even worse because iPhone has no battery cover you could seal the whole phone, but obviously you have to open the S3.
The phone is not waterproof at all!
I dropped 2 drops of water on it and my screen became green and black because the water ran on it through the hardware button! I had my phone in a bowl of rice for the past 2 days and its back as new again but this is unacceptable really...

There actually is. But it isn't a gs3. It Panasonic. They have a demo video using it in a tub of water. Crazy stuff.
All I do for waterproofing is carry a plastic food bag in my wallet and screen still works through bag so can use in rain, and I thought one of the Motorola Razr models has some kind of waterproofing film on.
I actually have a buddy with the Casio Commander. Its hardened / waterproof Android phone and I can testify that he will drop that sucker in a 5 gallon bucket and you can hear it playing music through the sidewall. Phone is always fine when he pulls it out. It doesn't even have a water damage indicator on it. Too bad its also a piece of crap else it might be pretty damn cool.

That video was clearly a fake (or at the least so poorly done that you can't actually ever see the phone near any water), as are most of them. But this one looks pretty genuine:
youtube.com/watch?v=If8G3UxeV-8
And it's by a guy who spends a lot of time reviewing phones (although the only review that I've bothered watching so far sucked quite badly )
What about the torture test done by CNET. seems pretty water proof to me, from what i consider a reliable source. But that said it is the internet, you never know anymore... but heres the link.. the water test is towards the end

Touchscreen stopped working

Got my truesmart last week. 2nd day in the touchscreen stopped working. Shortly after the screen went all white and wouldn't work at all. Later that day the screen started working again but no touch screen.
Left it alone for a couple days. Started working again. Everything appears to be fine. Only thing I can think of is i accidentally wore it in the shower (I am used to wearing my casio watches in the shower) but it barely got wet as I took it off as soon as I realized. Though this shouldn't matter as the watch is supposed to be water proof/resistant.
I have emailed the service omate email address and have yet to receive any response.
OK. About the "waterproof" thing. IP67 is a static immersion test. This means it is gently put in a 1m deep tank that is already filled with room temp water. The water pressure at 1m is 1.4psi. This is about 1/20th the water pressure in most homes. Even running it under a tap exceeds 1.4psi.
Yep. Selling it as waterproof is very misleading IMO.

It is and Sammy does it, so does Sony, Moto, pretty much the entire industry. Not saying it's right but at least Omate says they will warranty their stuff, nobody else does.

I'm not saying it's right but I've read countless posts by people giving Omate hell of the use of the term "waterproof" all the while doing it from or owning a device from a manufacturer that doesn't even have a liquid damage warranty.
Then there's the use of the term "waterproof". It's used only once in an image on the KS page yet water resistant is used something like twelve times.
I'm not saying there isn't some QC issues but when put into perspective Sammy would have told users "sucks to be you, go buy another one". That's what they did to me.
Omate got back to me.
They think its the battery not sitting correctly and have instructed me to open the back and put some tape or something on the inside to help the battery sit better.
They also said once they have repair centers set up in my country (Canada) that they will honor any warranty service.
I got a reply for Omate!
Only to bad its not what I hoped. Since I bought my Omate 2nd hand from a seller online they cant give me warranty. They also said they were clear about the avoid warranty with waterdamage.
Now its waiting time for me till they have a repaircenter.
Well, I too seem to have this issue... My screen is mostly white, but you can sort of see. Attached is picture of it. Also, my top right button doesn't work anymore. Could I have gotten water in it, maybe.. But I have not removed anything but the SIM card cover. I will be contacting OMATE, but have low hopes for resolution.

Underwater test nessesary?

Right when I turned it on and configured the settings, I dunked it in a sink full of water. Next day, tried it in a swimming pool.
Well, maybe need to try it then
I did with my white one, worked great. My black one died and I'm still fighting for a refund... Check the screen gaps very closely and give it a whirl.
The way I look at the whole water resistance thing with my Z2 is, if I get caught on the phone in the rain I won't worry about it, thats as far as my testing water resistance will ever go
I use it as a party trick but or if uninformed people are around i go out of my way without saying a word to them is turn on tap and wait a few seconds as they will generally look up from whatever they were doing and then i proceed to slowly "clean it" under the tap, I get all sort of response thes main ones being *gasps* or "are you crazy wtf." then explain it and show its working right after. If you want to make sure your covered by warranty take video of you firmly pressing the flaps down before proceeding with the above cause in the water proof booklet or chapter (cant rember what it which it was) it says if any dust or water is found beneath the flaps the warranty is void. which in my mind translates to even if the flaps seal was broken or faulty from the start you are officially screwed
This is what happened to me
I also bought My new Xperia Z2 from Saudi Arabia. It was w20 model had screen gaps issue both on front and back . Bought it from Sony store and they said that it will not effect waterproofness of the device. Even then i was careful but after a month it was full of finger prints and i decided to wash it and unfortunately water went inside . All flaps were closed and i double checked it . When i took it to service center they said no warranty if water went inside and they will send it to Dubai please check back after 2 weeks.
I posted on Facebook as they may help me but this was their reply was we are sorry and nothing else
On twitter they are not even replying. and they just say contact service center and all i hear from them is excuses. there is not a single scrtach on my device. Unfortunately there is no refund or replacement system here. Really disappointed with Sony services. I saved money for 6 months for this device

Fezan, I can understand that you were saving for it quite a long time but if you did, why did you risk and put it into water?
The problem is, that Sony advertises this phone as IP58 resistant BUT the warranty does not work if water gets inside the phone... They secured themselves...
I understand your frustration though, you just put it under the tap water and saw what happens. Unfortunately you should have done it in Sony store where a representative would check for waterproofnes of the phone, if you do it by yourself, they will hardly ever warrant it.
Even though this phone is supposed to be water proof, I do not intend to test this waterproofness, ever! Not intentionally, at least...

You have water test markers - you can see them if you open flaps.
If those markers become red, you haven't closed flaps right and your warranty won't be accepted.
But!!!
If those stickers are still white - it's not your mistake and Sony MUST accept warranty.
This device is waterproof and water resistant and you can go diving with it...
Will you do that or not, that's your thing but you have every right to do that.
Only, don't go to sea with it - dive in pool or lake
Salt could cause short-circuit and you'll not have your warranty rights...

Well, I guess you are right but what IF you closed the flaps correctly and one of the seals was bad and the water got inside anyway and marked the marker? This can happen too.
Waterproofness was not the main selling point for me, anyway, I would not risk submerging a 600 Euro worth of a device which was designed to be a phone not a completely waterproof camera
Anyway, I wish you good luck with Sony when going through the warranty process, I hope everything goes fine...

I am not saying you are foolish, maybe it is just me but I am very cautious with my electronics and I don't think I would risk submerging this phone into water. If it was a camera or a device specifically designed to be used under water then sure, why not.
By designed to be used in water I mean something that is well sealed and does not rely on some flaps, which deteriorate proportionally to the number of times you open them etc. I accept the fact that this phone is said to be waterproof but I bought it to be used as a phone and there is just too many catches in the warranty print and too many other things can go wrong.
@valdigre
Totally agree...
I don't need Z2 in swimming pool as well but if I'm not sure for waterproof I would take my device and one bucket with water and do test in the store or service center

Despite the unwise adverts of Sony I tend to see this -water resistance- as a safeguard against accidental water damage. This is NOT an industrial designed device meant for the work place, the Z2 is very much a domestic mobile and I tend to avoid contact with water. I am confident the Z2 is water resistant to the given specifications and feel comfortable using it in the rain etc.
I sincerely think those who take any mobile into the shower ....................well enough said, I shower to wash I cant see why one needs to do such a thing. We all need our personal space and if one cant shower in peace I think its time to revise our daily work patters.
Sea water is a big no no because of the salt as are swimming pools due to chemicals. These facts are mentioned in the manual.
I don't 'drop test' my devices either. I really don't need to confirm what I already know.

[Q] Ultra ruined.

Hi Everyone,
So I was on holiday with my beloved Ultra, and using it in the pool. Cool thing is, this phone is waterproof! That's what I thought until I got on the plane a few hours later and upon trying to use my phablet the touch screen stopped responding. It seemed to function OK, I just couldn't unlock it or use it as there was some kind of hyperactive spectre flying around inside making it seem like the touchscreen was possessed. I looked a little closer, and not only was there condensation visible in both camera lenses, but upon opening the usb cover there was also moisture inside there. I opened the other side, and the moisture indicator was still white, so I think the problem was specifically with the usb port cover.
Anyway, it's not covered under any kind of warranty as I bought it overseas, and I have taken it to a repair shop who confirmed that it's water damaged and that they would need to fix the damaged USB port and replace the screen to make it work again. I just want to buy a new one as it would be cheaper than getting it fixed, but I have some data/apps on the old one I don't want to lose. Any suggestions on the best approach? If the shop can read the eMMC and back it up, could I use that to restore data/apps onto a new phone, or am I better off just getting it fixed...
Advice/opinions appreciated.
it's a marketing trick. they are not actually waterproof.
I guess this guy's luck was bad. Mine had contact with water a couple of times and thankfully it lived upto its waterproofness promise

This is a stupid reply. I brought it with me in the pool with my kids, made photos and videos underwater (touch block + volume rocker), no problems at all.
Same goes with my wife's Z.
Of course, if you go swimming with the USB flap open, well, you're an idiot. (Not that I accuse OP of being one, just that 80% of the time when I saw someone with a faulty phone/laptop/tablet it was not working because of THEM).

Hopefully someone replies with some advice that is actually helpful... FYI I have used it in the pool (and had it underwater) multiple times before without problems. I always make sure the seals are sitting properly when I close them so I am doubtful it was user error...
The usb port is fully brpken?
I think it's corroded, but definitey doesn't work.

good for you, you were lucky. on the xperia forums and on here, there are many MANY people who had their phones damaged from water. Are ALL of them at fault?
however, call sony and ask them (i did):
1) what *guarantee* is there that with the flaps closed the phone will not receive water damage? they will answer none. There is no case where the warranty will cover water damage. Whether it's your fault or the phone's fault, it is irrelevant to sony. they will NOT cover it.
2) what happens if, after *normal use*... notice this: *normal use*, NOT abuse, the flaps lose their sealing ability? Does the warranty cover it? No. Warranty does NOT cover "normal use wear". Which means the flaps WILL lose their sealing ability and you end up with a non-waterproof phone. How soon? NOONE KNOWS because there is no way to actually TEST it, at least not as a USER. You MIGHT be able to have it tested at sony... but that would mean testing it every. single. time. you close any of the flaps...
your phone, at any given point, MAY or MAY NOT be waterproof. However, since you have no way to test it, it means that you CAN NOT TRUST it to be waterproof, which is, of course, means you have to treat it as NOT waterproof.
which, in the end, means the phone is not waterproof.
as a sidenote, keep any and all profanities to yourself
Blah blah. The phone is waterproof. No need to be all technical and stuff. Can it be used in water for a certain period of time? Yes.
Your post reminds me of when ships were first being built. If a boat ends up sinking from wear and tear does that mean it wasn't a floating device? Also wear and tear....that's why we check our cars at a set time for periodic maintenance because of wear and tear.
I got lax with mine and took it in the shower and got water in it, USB flap is worn. Not the companies, because I didn't take the necessary steps to make sure my phone was periodically maintained.
Just my 2 cents...

Waterproof? ??

I had my pixel 3 in my pocket and went into the water (not salted at least).
I went down to nostril, so my phone was completely submerged for less than 5 minutes but at it have an ip87 so I didn't care
I've seen that every camera had humidity I it and a few hours later,a black spot appear in the screen, the day after, screen is death....
?
Is the warranty will be able to work?
At which point the ip87 can assure it is waterproof?

Not sure where you are getting IP87? The Pixel 3 and 3 XL are considered IP68 devices. See the Google Safety and Regulatory document and have fun trying to explain that it was fully submerged and that should be considered water resistant. https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/9134668?hl=en
Water Resistance
Your phone is water resistant but not waterproof. Your Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL phone has a water resistance rating of IPX8 under IEC standard 60529. Water resistance may be compromised due to normal wear and tear or damage to the phone. The phone charger and other accessories are not water resistant. Do not charge the device when wet.
I had my connector usb c in it at that time, I use a magnetic cable so it's always in it..
Maybe that's where there was an entry...
And with that, I fully understand oneplus to not offer that certificate, totally useless if you offer no warranty

I would just play stupid (and of course admit to nothing) when you talk to Google and hope for the best regarding getting a replacement.

Wrong answer. Tell them the truth about what happened then beg for forgiveness. If you don't get a refurb then live and learn. If you do then live and learn. Win-win.

I am not saying to lie, but if they even hear certain words they won't even try to be helpful. Report the symptoms and be honest when asked questions. That is my opinion.

Oh, my mistake. Yeah sometimes you'll get someone that will take pity but you might need to bump it up to a supervisor. One thing I would say is that the water resistant rating should have allowed what happened to be a non issue to the device. Less than 5 minutes should not have ruined it so perhaps the phone was defective in some way. They might want to look at it before he gets a replacement which means he'd be out a phone for a little while. Maybe pick up a 3a in the meantime which is relatively inexpensive as a secondary device. I don't know, tough call either way. Good luck to the OP.
Water damage is not covered by warranty and even if you don't mention it, the inspection of the phone will reveal the water damage and you'll be notified of the voided warranty
