Need help deciding - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright, so here I am looking for a phone with a removable battery. S5 is way too expensive right now. S4 scares me with all the people reporting broken screens just keeping their phones in their front pockets. So this brings me to the S3. I know its a little stupid to be asking this here, since its a S3 forum, but I am hoping to get some unbiased opinion from you folks. Right now, I am deciding between the S3, Moto X and the Nexus 5. The N5 has horrendous battery life. So basically its just the Moto X or the S3.
I dont really care about KK, or getting updates from Samsung. All I want is a phone with great battery life and smooth, lag free operation. How does the S3 fare?

I've seen loads of S4 and no broken screens.
Personally using the S3 and cancelled my plans to change the phone. It's that good.

There is a thread going on since the beginning about the screens over at the S4 forums. I realize that the number of people having this problem is quite small compared to the total number of phones sold, but when the company itself recognizes the issue and offers a six month period for a screen replacement, it says something. And I dont want to have a phone I am constantly worried about.
Are you running on stock or AOSP? If latter, hows the performance? Any bugs?
Thank you for your help. Appreciate it

You guessed wrong then. I am not concerned about a specific ROM. All I want to know is if there are any deal breaking bugs that are common to AOSP ROMS, given the lack of documentation from Samsung. Now normally, I would browse through a few ROM threads, read up on its development and decide for myself, but since I don't have a phone currently and need to get one soon, i figured I'd ask in general hows the performance of AOSP.
And you said TW lags sometimes? Even the debloated ones do?
Again, thank you for all your help.

Yep. Touchwiz always lag. It just matters how much and how many times for each rom.
Some AOSP roms do not have bugs but sometimes the bugs might not even matter to u as u wun be using the certain app or feature. Try not to use roms tat have s4/5 or n2/3 features as those phones have 2GB of ram while the International gs3 have only 1GB of ram.

Lock screen wake and Dial pad and contact lag is well know on all Sammy device's. I had the s2 i9100 and moved to i9300 and apart from the screen and better CPU/GPU there is no difference. Next phone for me is Sony or g2 depending on price ATM of buying it. Imho stay away from Samsung.

Was looking thru those fones though. Would have chose the m8 no doubt but I take shots alot so the camera was a huge turn off. G2 but since g3 is coming out soon anyway, why not wait for g3?

Check out dorimanx kernel dev. He will get that phone to be beast. He did a great job on s2 i9100. G3 will cost so much to by anyway. I don't get contract phone's. Its either a cheap z1 or g2. Love Sony but g2 is a really nice phone. I did hear about poor screen on z1.

I use same plus BBM (always connected) and AFwall+ and Whatsapp running all the time in background (plus all the Sammy bloat). Except instagram and nba.
And I browse a lot on the phone with Chrome v29
Older 4.3 was buggy and it stuttered, but the latest one is smooth. But yes, if you compare with AOSP, then there is a slight difference. Otherwise it's ok and I like the cam.

what did you do with your rooted phone?

so i rooted my phone with UCLE5 and put the Siyah v343 kernel. but now what? i spent the last 2 days researching to successfully do this for speed improvements and what not. but i dont really see any differences in speed, or any differences at all. any suggestions on what i can do now because my phone looks the exact same way as it did before the root or what did you guys do after a root to make it seem like i actually rooted the phone.

If you dial *6969# naked girls come to where you are..... You need to flash a CUSTOM ROM you're on a stock ICS ROM you need to read a lot more go to the DEV section those are all custom ROMS.... For an instant change go to the play store and install Apex launcher.

If you're on stock ics (the official release) and someone told u there are speed improvements they lied. Any custom rom easily blows stock out of the water. Stock ( even when rooted) is basically for people who want to play it safe and for things to just work. If u want customization and speed ur best bet is an AOSP based rom. Good luck. Happy flashing.

ICS or Gingerbread Strictly in Terms of Performance/App Speed. Your opinion?

I'm going back and forth between these two as there are things I like about both.
One thing I have read is that ICS is more ram intensive, and thus certain apps might run a bit faster under Gingerbread.
Performance is the main thing I care about so I'd like to know if this is true and I would like to know your general opinions on ICS compared to Gingerbread
as well ....
Thoughts?

Man ... things are really touchy around here. Maybe I just have brain damage (quite possible) but I don't remember having to walk on eggshells quite so much back in the Tmobile Galaxy S XDA forum ...
Okay I changed it to "compared to" instead of "vs" in the body of my post ... is that less "inflammatory?"
Why would people get upset about picking one OS over the other? It's not like you designed the damn things. What's wrong with asking which one you think is faster for memory intensive apps? I'm not trolling. I just don't get it.
I personally like ics because of the overall look I never really notice a difference about performance but I can safely say this phone can handle pretty much anything

I agree completely that ics in general looks much better than gb. I like the feel of it better too, for lack of a better word. But since I use Launcher Pro it doesn't make that much difference what the UI looks like for me. I have noticed that some games are sluggish with ics or do not run at all, but that could be more of an issue on the game developers end, I guess ... Do you have any issues connecting your phone to a computer with ics? The process seems much more cumbersome than with gb--with gb I just plug in a USB cable and tap mass storage and that is it.
Went to stock gingerbread from jb. Gingerbread is very smooth. Only thing i miss from ics/ jb is task manager and full screen browser (stock browser)
This thread is pointless, no offense meant, because of the following:

Only thing I've suffered from is a bit of mem leak... a reboot a day solves that, sometimes two. This guy is being killed by mem leak. Why is it different? Each phone is different just like each grape on a vine is different.
Different views, different experience, same phone, same ROM.
The same things can be said for ICS vs GB. Different issues, different opinions, same phone, same ROM. Let's not forget that I may FULL wipe and run the kernel cleaning script before each flash and someone else may just wipe cache and dalvik. That right there is enough for one of us to have a problem the other doesn't. Let's not forget about the different tweaks you can do which add even MORE variables to why one ROM or kernel may run better for you than me... even on the same settings.
This was my "nice" response.

GB. I believe it offers the best experience for our device. I've been on ICS for a while and the only thing holding me is the beautiful UI changes in AOSP. So far, it's been enough to keep me put. I doubt most people care about it that much though.

[Q] best ICS or JB ROM?

Did you say reliable?
Then forget about both ICS and JB and go with GB. Any variant will do.
ICS/JB ROMs are just too unfinished yet to be a reliable daily driver, IMO. People are woking hard on them though, so there is no doubt they will one day become as reliable as good old GB.
Agreed.

This is a very accurate summary of where we stand. I'm still running Nottachtrix 1.3.1 even though Nottach left the Atrix over a month ago, just because everything works on it. Bluetooth, wifi, HWA, Ubuntop, all cameras, and even a decent selection of themes for both android and linux.
But with the new leak libs, there is sure to be a fantastic CM9/10 ROM that takes advantage of them. We just have to be patient.
Hi
If you're not using thoroughly your phone, the CM10 form Epinter is now reliable enough for a daily use.
I was using CM7 since months, and after trying CM10 last week, i'm still using it and have found no real limitations for a basic usage.
I'd recommend you to keep a GB based rom if you want to have the most reliable system and if video recording is a primary need for you.
Just my $.02: I don't even use the "latest" GB 2.3.7 ROM: I've returned to Neutrino 2.6 EE (the latest is 2.91 at this writing). CM 7.2 RC1 was the most stable + efficient ROM from the CM gurus for my Atrix. I charge my phone once every two or three days too.
Think about driving a car that everyone laughs at that's never needing to go to the shop. Gits ya there, gits ya back, reliably and without anyone really paying attention to it, and it just goes and goes and holds its own against everyone else. Newest doesn't always mean best; trustworthiness does.
Epinter's CM10 worked OK for me despite the few well known bugs.
You might give the brand new AtrICS ROM a shot. It's hard to believe that it could already be as stable as it claims to be, but with working hardware acceleration, it should have some bugs fixed as compared to CM10.

Only had one reboot. I don't think it's rom related. Words with friends is the culprit. Happened during that.

I highly recommend the newbie guide sticky in the atrix general forum. Saved my butt so many times. And there's no Odin on Motorola phones.

epinter JB rom
I am using epinter's JB rom and it works flawlessly.
Thanks,
Jinesh
I switched from epinter's CM10 to AtrICS today and found it to be a fairly usable. You trade some features for others.
I prefer the interface of CM10 to AtrICS, but AtrICS feels really snappy thanks to the HWA. I'll probably get used to ICS after a while. The Camera works well, but, like others I noticed that after switching from the back camera to the front, there was some corruption on the right side of the screen. Going into Camera Settings and unchecking then rechecking the Widescreen box fixes this. There are problems with the unlock screen of AtrICS; it can be slow to appear when you press the power button and I have seen the screen turn on for a split second before turning right back off. If you let the phone go into a deep sleep, you may see a black screen for a minute, in my case the unlock screen did eventually appear. I've had one reboot right after closing a bunch of apps running in the background then trying to open a browser.
WiFi works great with AtrICS and mobile data feels faster than I remember.
My mobile gone hot after a few minute use AtrICS, and experienced network lost. The phone also hot with epinter 's version.
Restored TopSmart1.3. GB has the stablity I trust.

TopSmart is not supported anymore. You may want to move to a supported gb rom like MROM....

Does your camcorder autofocus very often (around 1-5 seconds)? Mine does with Somebody's CM10, I'm just wondering if it just me.

[Q] Help - poor battery

Hi, I need some battery help, this is my first android phone after running with ios for the last 4 years, I'm using th S3 and loving it however I'm having to charge the phone twice a day. Like I say this is my first android so rooting is new and I unsure what I'm doing here. I've followed plenty tips to save battery life but it's still running down too quick.
After 3 1/2 hours of very little use my battery is at 70%
Standby has zapped 24% of that
Screen another 24%
Internet 21%
System 12%
OS 8%
These safe the main culprits for the battery use, I understand you can do something when you root the devise, any help would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks
This should be in the Q&A section, but please be specific as to what exactly you were doing? (Gaming, browsing in 3g or wifi, etc.) If you just got the phone however, just wait for about three and four days and the real battery life would start to emerge. This is the time when most phones can actually last for almost a day or two. Another thing is that you should download Better BatteryStats and find apps that give the most wakelocks. Just take a screenshot and upload it here if you need help. And live wallpapers and widgets do cause some unnecessary battery drain.

I've had it since release. I hoped that JB would fix the battery. I'll try and get a screenshot later
maybe something stopping your device from going into deepsleep.
One use Better Battery Stats ,
Two read the multitude of battery threads .

If you're not using your phone and it is still at 800mhz, there is something wrong. what the hell you talking about.

I think he's talking about underclocking the max cpufreq to 800 mhz when you're sure that you're not going to be using the device for a while. I think it's a pretty good idea actually, but certainly not practical for everybody especially heavy users like me

Yeah. I sometimes do that when im not near a charger and my battery is dwindeling. Anything less than 800mhz is pretty bad though when your used to the rapidness.
Looks like im selling this badboy anyway. Hopefully get a lg nexus next week. It seems to me that to acheive proper butteryness you have to use toichwiz ui. None of the cm10 or even when i use nova or any other launcher. None of are as smooth as tkuchwiz.Im mad for mods and flashing so think its time for a switch.

Thinking of the same too actually. But based on the rumors, I hear more nexuses coming from other OEMs are to be actually revealed rather than just from lg. Although if the nexus 4 really does come with just 8gb of internal storage without a microsd slot then I'm sticking with my S3. Although I hear that new parts of code are already starting to show up in the Origen-board-something for exynos processors, this might turn out to be a gamechanger for our problems with cm10 or other pure android goodies.

why galaxy s3 working laggy with samsung stock roms

as i described phone is slower than my old sgs2.s2 was running smoothly 4.1.2 . even 4.1.2 laggy on my sgs3.now using custom roms but samsung based roms fail for me.is it only my phone or sgs3 fails???my antutu score with s3 21212 on archidroid.
Touchwiz roms are like this due to Samsung. Benchmarks show nth as manufacturers have some cheating methods to make the score higher.

Use other ROM based tw. Its better than stock. Smooth
Battery friendly.?
In my experience 4.1.2 as mg4 was the most stable and fast stock version. After that including 4.1.2 and 4.3 stocks all were laggy and had less battery performance. However, I couldn't find any aosp based custom rom work flawless or at least stable. Each one has its own bugs. Slimkat doesn't support exfat, liquidsmooth was very very laggy and cm has some fc issues etc. As a consequence at least stock one is the stable one.

I was on 4.1.2 since i bought my s3, i decided to try 4.3 and i switched to Android Revolution HD 51 in combination with Boeffla kernel, and i must say performance is way much better and also the battery life, with 4.1 i got somewhere around 4h of screen on time, and with 4.3 i get close to 5h of screen on time, also to mention over the night battery drops only 1% if wifi on and 0% with airplane mode on, preety impressive, you just have to find your way to customize it for daily use

No my wake locks seem normal though there was a suspicious one, I don't remember it's name exactly, but I'll tell when I find it out, only thing I know that it's audio related but I don't think that's it... Other than that battery just melts leaving me with 1-2 hours screen time (on stock 4.1.2) I'll try flash a different rom and I'll tell you what changed
