Bypass T-Mobile Tethering Restriction? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

I've seen it mentioned in a couple of threads, but haven't found a definitive answer or solution yet. Has anyone managed to get a working hotspot hack up and running to bypass the T-Mobile upsell page? The existing method of using SQLite Editor to edit settings.db doesn't seem to work for me. I love this phone, but really miss my hotspot from the Note 3.
Any help is certainly appreciated.

I tried (using out of the box settings) but didn't even see a connection pop up on devices scanning for networks when turning hotspot on. Are there settings that I need to be using other than the default?

Yeah I think there alternate settings you need to use. I had to setup other ones for the s4.
I haven't rooted my s5 yet so I can't test and let you know.

I have been using WiFI Tether Router for a long while now. It gives you unrestricted tethering. Make sure to read the instructions for T-Mobile phones on the developers Web page. https://sites.google.com/site/wifitetherrouter/home/device-configuration it works great as long as you are rooted. I use about 120GB a month with 2 AT&T phones tethering off of me at work. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.snclab.wifitetherrouter

I'm trying to make APN changes the Wifi Tether app says need to be made but the T-Mobile network is greed out in the settings. Is their a way to fix that?

My apn settings are gray also. I tried adding a new apn with correct settings but my phone switches back to original apn automatically.

ok, I bought the app and configured it according to the instructions and I was able to connect the iPad. The performance is horrible. When I use the native T-Mobile Tethering everything loads fast with no buffering. Could there be something I;ve done wrong? What are your S5 settings?
How were you able to change the APN Settings?

hmm. That seems to be what I need but the Tutorial makes the assumption that I have the ability to navigate to the proper system files and edit them. I tried and using windows explorer, I cannot find the system folder. If you could, would you make a Noob Guide TuT so that us Non-Devs could have WiFi Tethering? I know that implies work for you and I hate it when that happens to me, so maybe you could point to a beginners guide to get started?

First your phone needs to be rooted, then you need to have ES File Explorer installed on your phone. You can use ES File Explorer to edit the file in the system folder.
1. Open ES File Explorer
2. Pull up the Menu for it (hold down the multitask button for that)
3. Tap on Tools
4. Turn on Root Explorer
5. Tap on Root Explorer on the left side and go to Mount R/W
6. Make sure all of the settings are set to RW, tap OK
7. Up top tap / that should take you to the root of the phone,
Now you should be able to follow the instructions from the previous link i sent you to Jovy's TuT. Make sure to also edit the one above the Tethering APN and enable it to be editable.
When you click on the file it opens it up in read only, you have to hit the menu in the top right corner to edit the file.
Be very careful and only change what he tells you to change. I would make a back up of the file and place it somewhere you know you can find it.
Once you have enabled the APN and saved the file restart your phone. Once you are restarted navigate to where the APN's are. System Settings, More Networks, Mobile Networks, Access Point Names. Once you are there click on the top right corner and tap Reset to Default. That should pull down the new settings so you can edit your APN settings.
Then follow these instructions.
Need to change your APN, simply navigate to Settings > More > Mobile networks > Access Point Names. Select your T-Mobile APN, and scroll to APN protocol. Change this to IPv4, and then save your APN
I think that covers everything that I did.

You need to set you Access Point Names
Is under Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Networks - > Access Point Names
You need to verify which ones your carrier uses.

Add the following to system/build.prop and reboot the phone:
net.hostname=YOURNEWHOSTNAME
Your router should pick it up. I just tested this and it worked on my WRT400N router.
That's is! Thanks.
Sorry if I was calling it the wrong thing before and confusing people, it was host name I was looking to change. Added that line in the build prop file and rebooted phone and router and it now has a friendly name!

Just a heads up, buddy. I flashed TWRP via Odin (from our root thread) and then flashed the Omega v1.2 ROM for the International S5 (there's a thread here for it, I can link you if need be). Hotspot works fine out of the box!
Plus, you can also have the pleasure of saying you tried the first custom ROM for the S5. Everything appears to be working as well, so I'm gonna stick with this. No CIQ, no Knox, Hotspot is a go.... I'm a happy camper now!

Correct. Once you hit your limit on the account they throttle you. I blow through 19GB average a month and the 5GB limit really upsets the Kid in the backseat when all she gets from Netflix on the iPad is <Buffering>
There was a fix with the S3 that avoided the throttle bottleneck.

Please guide me on how to install that rom. I updated mine to nc5 and rooted. I couldn't find a native odex mod either hopefully developers would make it soon.
Does anyone know if a flashable mod for the stock rom has been release yet?

Ylla26,
I have written a comprehensive post on installing custom ROMs. Please see that post for information. Since you already have NC5, you can skip step #3. Step #4 is not required, but I'd recommend it anyways.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
Hope this helps!
Guys you need to keep looking and search on the forum. All the questions are already answered you just need to look for it instead of asking for it.
Step by step: You don't need to root your phone in order for this to work.
Get your MSL/SPC number using the app from this link: http://tools.flashingtools.com/SPCUtility.apk
Dial ##data#
Select Edit
Put your MSL # and click OK
Scroll to bottom and select More
Scroll to bottom and select LTE APN Settings
Got to APN2 LTE internet
Go to APN type
Add ,dun at the end
Now it should be default,mms,dun
Got to APN2 EHRPD internet
Go to APN type
Add ,dun at the end
Now it should be default,mms,dun
Go to Settings
Change Hotspot to ON
Done. It should work now.

There are two other methods you can activate the Hot Spot. Check the following posts:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=54148182
and/or
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53723731
Read the second method on this post, you need to have your phone rooted then you just change the telephony.db file with the one posted. There's 5 pages on that post so make sure you read them all before ask a question.
