[Q] TMo OTA Push to My S5 on Friday - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

Has anyone allowed this Kit-Kat push to install? If so, I would be curious to know what has changed, if any settings were lost, disabled apps re-enabled, etc.
I just hate to be a guinea pig for these OTA pushes; always afraid that Google and sammy will continue to lock down the control screws by removing user ability to disable instrusive built-in apps via Application Manager, etc. On the other hand, I realize that they will need to do bug fixes for some period of time after such a new release. In this case, the release notes are the most cryptic that I have ever seen "increases stability" but "might change settings, delete data, etc." What the hell?!!
I am trying to avoid rooting this new device but may be forced to in order to do an image backup to get back to a previous stable state if one of their OTAs wreaks too much havoc. Any thoughts on this or any way to disable OTAs with stock firmware for the TMo USA S5?

What version of software are you on?
So far there has only been one OTA push for the phone and that was the one you would have gotten out of the box.
version NCH.
That one is still rootable too.
I think that is what the root method was actually based on.

Thank you for the reply, Artisan, and sorry for the late reply. I am on NCD (e.g., Build number KOT49H.G900TUVU1ANCD and Baseband G900TUVU1ANCD). I picked my phone up from a TMO store on the release Friday and received the OTA push download a few days later. I have not yet installed it because I cannot determine what it is/does/improves/or limits.
Not quite sure what you mean when you say that there has been one OTA push and I would have received it out of the box. The TMO store unboxed the phone and set it up for me. Either the update was not yet available, or was and they simply did not install it. In any case, it appears that I am on the released version NCD and what they are trying to push to me is the one and only update so far, NCH, right?
My question remains, what does NCH change? The release note is useless; it says "increases stability." Does anyone know the answer to this question?
Thank you!

The NCH update only does what it states, increases stability. It's what everyone is on and doesn't limit anything.

I think this is just an HTC update. My OS version is still 7.10.7740.16.
@Rickgig, tethering worked before this update. You just have to pay for it.

The OS version on my AT&T HTC Titan is 77.10.7720.68 Your manual update seems like it pretty easy to do I was wondering if I wanted to try this then roll back how would I do that since your file don't have the version my phone has?
Also, do you happen to know if this new version or any newer version takes care of the random power cycling/reboot that occurs like 1 or 2 times every 12-18 hours? My phone seems a little better now that I uninstalled the HTC apps (except for the HTC version of Tango video chat software since that is made for the Titan) hope that these updates take care of that too.

Hey guys,
Just updating you all on this if you haven't already read the Windows phone blog today.
They have mentioned in their blog that this update and the future 'maintenance updates' will fix more than the change log just to maintain any issues raised by the carriers. However, these maintenance updates will only be released to carriers that ask for it. So if your carrier did not ask for this maintenance update or anything else in future you won't get these kind of small maintenance updates. I am going to manually update my phone today as mine is SIM free and my carrier will never get me any maintenance updates.
I will post back if I see anything noticably different. I would however recommend that if you feel confident, then go for manual update as your carrier might or might not have asked Microsoft for the update. The reason I understand is these maintenance updates once applied require your carrier to put their crap back on your phone. Some carriers happily will do it and others will take long time to re-do their crap on the phone, which means you get update later than the world. I do appreciate MS's approach regarding maintenance update, but it's a shame we have some lazy carriers supplying network to windows phone!
I am thinking of doing the manual update as well. Would you indeed be so kind to post the result? I am curious!

yes, you can. Your phone is pretty much 99.9% (if not 100%) OEM.

This is probably correct, if they don't have a system in place that auto rejects ConsumerCellular/Wind IMEI numbers.
We won't really know for sure until there is an OTA.
I haven't checked today, but Huawei pulled the update. Couple quirks that they need to iron out.
Other apps not staying default, one I've had plus it appears to be eating the battery a bit more, but,
with the 4000 mAH battery, it's no big deal.

Yep, saw that on the Huawei site about a day or two after they released it. Mine should be in their system, but I don't think the update will be coming soon.
I'm starting to get the feeling, they released whatever they had, on the 30th, to satisfy their "in the first half of 2015" pledge, and will sort out the bugs later.
If a consumer is the type that wants cutting edge updates, go with an iphone or Nexus. Otherwise, it's up to the carriers (if ever) to release it or the device maker, if purchasing an unlocked non carrier branded device. The couple quirks on 5.1 aren't that big of a deal, it's stable otherwise.
If it hadn't been for Huawei releasing an easy way to go back to 4.3, I wouldn't have updated. I don't ever turn my device off, so the launcher not sticking, along with the 3rd party SMS program isn't that annoying. It appears it's sucking just a bit more juice, but, with that 4,000mAH battery, it's no big deal, even running in "normal" mode.

OTA 5.0.2 on its way

Havent seen this posted anywhere but for those still out there with interest here it goes. I have known for a month now but didnt want to say anything until it got closer. The VZW Z2 tablet was 1st and now the Z3v is up for OTA. I haven't gotten it yet on my own but been told to keep manually trying the pull. Pull will happen first.
I had a Z4v and curious to see how well the z3v performs in comparison with the last and final build for that hardware. Z4v only had 5.0.2 also.
Advanced calling is supposed to come with this OTA.
Lollipop 5.0.2
hVolte enabled
Band 4 and Band 13 enabled(Carrier Aggregation) + Band 2 support
Stagefright patch
OS fixes
Mad
Any news on the official roll out date? And about time Z3V owners get 5.0! Wooo!!!
There never was a Z4v. Verizon never released the phone.

First off, how did you get a z4v? Also, where did you hear the news about the update?
Yes there was a Z4v. It was retail ready and shipped but then recalled. Some resellers had the opportunity to not return all stock like this one http://m.ebay.com/itm/161860311364?_mwBanner=1
I had a pre-release z4v for testing with my company MDM. I work for a Verizon business customer who tests devices and software updates to make sure they work with our mobile device management. Z4v was weeks from releasing when the hold was placed. That's all I know before it was recalled and cancelled. It worked fine with a few bugs I reported. It was fully waterproof.
I got the word to keep an eye out for the z3v update coming so I can test and now I'm waiting. Since there is a lowe number in use at my company I didn't get early access to the software update like I did for the s6 5.1.1 and the S5 lollipop update.
I just like the Sony phones and can't wait to try the official update on a few phones I have here. I don't have any interest in the pre release leaked versions out now.
I still haven't gotten the update on my two phones yet but will keep trying the manual pull.
Hopefully vzw doesn't hold the update now that the v10 and turbo 2/maxx 2 is released same week.
Mad
Holy crap, that's amazing that the Z4v is actually on sale for once. But is the seller not worried about Verizon ensuing to get their phone back or something?
And geez... that's some 100% markup.
So a ftf ought to be on the Sony github, but there isn't one. So what is the build number?
Nothing new on Xperifirm
Perhaps just like the Xperia Z2 Tablet, the build number will end with 508 as the OTA.

I'm not rooted and was able to get this to work last night using the 9.18.6 flashtool version. It works and I did not lose any data or apps. The phone is running better than ever. Once installed the flashtool has a button to go to xperifirm to get the latest FTF if you haven't already downloaded it. Here is the link: https://userscloud.com/kb6tr3bcuecr
Can you confirm that that is the final build and not an RC?

I doubt this is the final build but was tired of waiting for Verizon. Now that this was successul for me I'll just pull any new release on Xperifirm via the flashtool and install it instead of waiting for an OTA. I'm not sure how Verizon even manages these since they are 1.5gb files.
i'm new to android etc. i don't want to get in too deep in regards to roms, unlocking the bootloader etc cause it's probably above my head. however, i have friends on lollipop and it looks a lot better. so if i were to use this flashtool for sony. basically i plug in my phone, download this xperifirm and then install? sounds like there was no need to root or anything? thanks for any tips.
Does this update allow you to use VoLTE? I upgraded to this phone from a Galaxy S4 and definitely like all of the features on the Z3V more except that I cannot talk and use data at the same time.

Thank you for contacting the Verizon Wireless Chat Team. One of our skilled Chat Representatives will be with you in a moment.
Your Chat Session ID is XXXXXXXXXX.
Hello, my name is XXXX. I’m happy to assist you with your question.
How can I help you today?
Visitor: Hello
Visitor: When is the Xperia Z3V receiving Lollipop?
XXXX: Good morning!
XXXX: We can definitely check and see when it may be getting that update.
XXXX: I am checking for you now if we have the information on when it will get the update.
XXXX: Thank you so much for your kind patience as I am researching this for you.
Visitor: Thank you.
XXXX: You are most welcome.
Visitor: I am reading insider reports that OTA 5.0.2 is on the way. Just wanting to confirm.
XXXX: Right now, we do have it confirmed that it will be coming to the devices, but we don't have a specific date to provide at the moment. Rolling out a new release takes a great deal of planning as it is important that Verizon Wireless deploy a fully tested release to avoid any customer impacting issues. Testing and approval requires input from many test organizations and stakeholders so we can ensure our reliability for our devices.

Your not telling the community anything new.
VZW petitioned the FCC for WI-fi calling because AT & T got granted it (Wi-fi calling), advanced calling 1.0 and lollipop not getting either yet is what has the community pissed at VZW.
Post about things coming with no concrete info just makes it worse.
Can someone post how to use xperifirm and flash tool with this phone

Z981 New update

Z981 for T-Mobile has a new update and it seems to fix some screen tearing issues. Update seems to add some stability too.
Any one else running this update?
Thoughts?
Just found out that you can unlock the bootloader with this update by tapping the build number 3 times.
Then developer options can be enabled.
Then OEM unlocking can be enabled.
What does this do for us guys?
It updated for me this morning, and I have yet to see much of a difference. Then again, I've been doing housework all day and haven't messed with the phone today.
Did some looking, the update was just the November security patch.
The bootloader unlock option was there before the recent update. You need to find the tmo folks on tinder and snuggle with them to get those tools to actually use that option.
Been 24hrs since I updated and have hammered device with no sight of the "Tetris stack" glitches. So on top of the security patch there must've been a kernel / graphic driver update.
good day.
The Metro variant just got an update too. Added a few features and included a few bug fixes. Haven't had time to really test drive it but it seems to be stabler, no screen bugs or data drops yet.
Edit: The Metro update also let us get into recovery now but nobody's had time to play with it much yet. So far we've got recovery, FTM mode, and safe mode, I think.

Yes the metro update actually fix my screen flicker. I tested minecraft that has screen flicker many many times while playing it. After the update, I played it again and no flickers so I am really happy about it.
AS for recovery, FTM mode, and safe mode - I had all those even before the update, actually.

Yes, that's what I thought after I read in one thread that MetroPCS pulled the update. Waiting a bit doesn't kills? Feels great to be back in XDA again. I usually use XDA for learning and reference, I only have a couple of post but been around for awhile.
My z981's mfg date was October 2016, T-Mobile variant, I picked it up December 10th, when I realised my Nexus 5 was unsalvageable. I assume the update was pulled, as I am on 0B04, one page on T-Mobile's site says the update was set for a staged release between the 21st of November through the 19th of December, another page doesn't even show this phone amongst their active or testing updates..
If I receive an update notification, I'll pull the file, but I probably won't flash it myself.

Nice. The update never showed up on my device. I may reset it just to see, but I'm not concerned. I replaced the launcher from the start, disabled a couple of apps, but the phone works well enough for me as is. I mostly read and listen to music, so nothing demanding.
Still, a nougat update with an unlocked bootloader/fastboot would be a great gift from ZTE lol.
[edit] I backed up my music and files, and reset the phone, still no update. I won't worry about it 'till people start receiving the 'next' update, or root is achieved and someone makes a custom kernel/rom.

I don't personally own one, the default charger works well enough for me so far, though the phone supposedly charges significantly faster while off. I haven't tested this myself, but if it turns out to be true, I'd assume the kernel limits charging, which wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

If I ever receive the update I'll pull it from the device and upload it to mega or Google drive. Not holding my breath, since it was probably put on hold for causing issues on some devices.
I shall greatly appreciate it if you can do it or anyone that updates and has the time to load it.

ASUS Suspends Android 7.0 Nougat Update for ZF3U! BUT My ZF3U is DEAD!

Following my recent technical issues that were caused after updating my ZF3U to Android 7.0, I contacted ASUS and was told that "we have checked this for you and sent this info through for analysis. The Android N update has been stopped for OTA updates. So we would advise to downgrade the unit back to Android M for now. And do a factory reset for the unit".
This advice did not work and eventually my problems got worse (see other threads I posted about my problems). Few days a go my ZF3U completely died on me. Prior to this fingerprint recognition did not work, serial number was misreported in settings, no sound in calls was present even after downgrade to Android M. ASUS should not have released the Android 7.0 firmware in the first place pending proper testing on the ZF3U.
Eventually, I sent the phone to repair (through my insurance as ASUS insisted I had to send the device to Taiwan as it originated from there for the Asia market -POOR Service for an international company) and was advised that my ZF3U was beyond economical repair so a replacement was needed. I have now ordered another one as this phone is the only phone available that caters for my needs. I am really annoyed with ASUS, their service and the really poor software update they first rolled via OTA and then through their servers and then withdrew without any advice to those of us who have already installed it on our precious devices. They should never have released an incomplete, faulty firmware update. I hope those of you who have either downloaded the OTA or used the manual file do not experience the issues I had but if you do then good luck to you unless you have insurance.
Lets hope they learn to fix their phones properly with good after-sales support and I am still waiting for compensation from them following my recent complaint.
What's up with this update anyway ? I received it and my phone functions perfectly...
Why did Asus pull the update ? What's the official reason ? Is it a widespread problem ? Or just corner cases ?
Thanks.

Not sure why it was pulled. I got the manual update second hand from a user on this site as it was already pulled from ASUS before I could get it. I knew the risk and updated anyways. No issues at all. Phone works perfectly, maybe even better. My bootloader was unlocked and rooted just like AWFRONT was. Not sure why I didn't get the same issues they did, but I am 100% issue free on the 7.0 update.

this explains why my ultra didn't get the update yet.. probably it was rolled out to some devices, and encountered intermittent issue like above and rolled back..
