[Q] Device Security Policy Spoofing? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
Been a frequent reader of the formus for a long time, though I can usually get the information I need without having to annoy anyone with questions... Guess there's a first time for everything!
I have a question about Device Security Policies. Specifically, Lotus Notes Traveller.
All of our users have the option of having their company email accounts on their mobile devices. All of them use iOS devices, but sadly, we apply the same policy rules and all of the same administrator settings to all operating systems. So here's where I have the problem...
I like the convenience of having the Lotus Notes Traveller suite on my phone. Mainly for To-Do and Calender sync, but occasional email is useful. Our Lotus Notes policy reques a password of a certain strength to be enabled on all devices - it must consist of letters, numbers, lower case, upper case and can contain symbols. My issue is that it is frustratingly slow an inconveninece to enter such a complex password every single time I take my phone out of my pocket(a lot!) but I don't want to disable the android policies since there could be some users switching from iPhones to Galaxy S4/S5s.
What I am wondering is, can I do something on my Android device(Galaxy S4 GT-i9505 LTE) that will fake or spoof the secuirty strength and let Lotus Notes still sync with the server even if I don't have a password on my device?
In summary:
- Lotus notes needs a complex password to operate
- I don't want one
- Can I have a less complex password(PIN) or even no unlock secuirty but fool Notes into thinking my device secuirty meets policy.
Sorry if I haven't explained this clearly enough. If you need any more informaiton, please let me know.
If you feel some additional information on the Lotus Notes side could be useful you can get more information by Google searching "Enabling Android device security via Lotus Notes Traveler" there will be an IBM link with all the info. Sorry I couldn't give you a URL - apparently I need to have 10+ posts to my name before I can use external links!
For now I have uninstalled the Lotus Notes Traveller suite so I could go back to my handy 4 digit unlock PIN :good:
Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Ace
P.S. I am comfortable with Flashing updates and/or custom ROMs if that's a posible solution. I currently run PAC ROM AIO Black Power-Edition NG 4.4.2.

Maybe something like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2398934 ?
Another idea: Maybe you could use something like KeePass or LastPass to be able to both have complex passwords and be simple to enter?

[Q] bypass Exchange security policy ?

any way to do this , its driving my nuts tapping in a password every 15 min . thanks
Might I suggest you talk to the person who implemented the policy. I say that because, being the Manager of Information Systems, if you deliberately circumvented one of my policies I'll show you where, in your employment agreement, you have just committed an offense that might result in your termination...
Just a thought...
This is MY device
I fully understand WHY security policy is needed, I completely disagree with HOW it is implemented. If a PIN was required to read/send e-mail, I would understand and cooperate, but locking the whole device?? my phone does lots of other stuff other than reading e-mail you know. Why do I need to type a password to make calls? To play games?
There are other ways. Ask for PIN when opening the e-mail app or when accessing the file where e-mails are stored for example.
hi
i have posted a couple of replies about this. do a search by my user name and hopefully you will find it. let me know if you cant and i will try to post link.

[Q] Beginner questions about contacts

Hi,
firstly, let me introduce myself:
My name is Tony and from my signature and amount of posts, you can see, I am a very active XDA user and used to do a lot of first and second level support for the blueangel and the blackstone and today my SGS2 arrived, which is my first native android phone. As soon, as i figured out all the tiny beginner's questions, i will start supporting this awesome device for all you fellow users out there.
But for now, excuse me, that I have to ask a few stupid questions that I encountered while setting up the device:
1. My phone is set to English (US) and my keyboard and voice input options are set to German (so that writing or voice inputting sms and german addresses are easier). However, Vlingo does not exactly support the dual language and sometimes produces problems when reading out english information, anybody else experiencing mixed language problems there? any advice?
2. i decided to set my up contacts from scratch. i put in all the correct formal names for my contacts, but when i connect these users to their respective facebook accounts (who are sometimes based on nicknames), the display name automatically changes to the facebook name, while i prefer the formal name. is there a way to change it?
3. contacts allow me to add several im accounts, e.g. ICQ. when i click the icq# of a user, it opens up im and states that only windows live, google talk and yahoo are supported. is there a way to either connect that to the official icq for android, or add other messengers to the stock im? if not, why bother inputting all the information, if one cannot use it?
i wonder why nobody else seems to experience problem #2.
i found it again here: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=6067
apparently, when you connect contacts through one or more platforms, like facebook, twitter, last.fm, skype... and there names vary, your contacts app will always prefer the last name with the latest letter in the alphabet. in my case, there is one contact first name r. last name b., but one facebook, he goes by another variation of his name, "zu b.", so contacts prefers the facebook name, as z is greater than b. there is no logical reason why facebook names should be preferred to the phone's own stored name. after all, i entered those names because i wanted to find the contacts by that name. why does the phone tell me, my choices are no good and facebook's are better?
strike issue #1 and #3, i will find a workaround some time, but it would be extremely nice, if someone could check if this contacts issue is present in their device and firmware?
i have ke7 dbt (latest german stock rom).
My nexus one does the same thing. If I sync contacts with Facebook it changes to their Facebook displayed name. I'm still not clear on exactly how it does it too.
i tried several ways of bypassing the issue, starting by assuming the sorting of contacts would be determined by the regular ascii order of letters, or linux's, so i tried renaming every contact to minuscules, so R.B. -> r.b. which didn't help and i wouldn't even bother starting any contact with z or any symbol, as that would render the letter navigation bar on the right useless.
so the only way i could bypass the issue was to sort and display contacts by first name. after many years of windows mobile use i'm having trouble getting used to it but apparently, there is no other way so far.
if anyone else has trouble with this, please go to http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=6067 and star the issue and post your experiences.

[Q] SGS2 Exchange 2010 client and modded ROMs

Hi, there
New to this forum group, having just taken delivery of SGS2, with three.co.uk.
Prior to this I had an HTC HD2 with O2 UK, and made much use of the HD2 forum groups in modding that phone.
This forum group has been so active, I see a steep learning curve ahead. This is all to the good - it means folks are enthusiastic about this phone.
A major reason for me choosing the SGS2 was that Samsung Exchange client supports SMS sync with Exchange 2010 accounts.
This is vital for work, as I can send up to 1000 sms a month to clients and staff.
With SMS sync, I can keep a message history for past and current issues and projects.
My question is: should I stick to the standard Samsung ROM (it isn't "3" branded, as I got it through a reseller, and came unlocked) to keep SMS sync?
Or, can I give in to my inner geek and get modding?
There seem to be 2 main branches for mods - Samsung ROM based and "other" ROM based.
If I were to install a modded ROM would I preserve the functionality?
Or, could I reinstall the Samsung Exchange client if it wasn't present in a modded ROM?
Please excuse me if the answer is out there. I have done extensive reading and searching, but haven't found an answer yet.
If the answer to my question is "search some more, son, this has been answered already", please let me know politely.
I would suggest learning first which things do you need to be able to run SMS sync. If the only thing you need its Samsung Exchange Client, you can use any ROM you like and you can install Samsung Exchange Client app in there so you would be able to run SMS sync without problems.
If SMS sync requires certain kernel or more deeper system stuff, it would be harder to move to another ROM.
Hi, AzureusPT, and thanks for replying
I suspect it is just the Samsung Exchange client I need - it is the only one, other than WM6.1/6.5 that has the SMS sync feature enabled. Standard Android and other variants (HTC, etc.), Apple and Windows Phone 7/7.5 don't enable the necessary features.
I've tried Nitrodesk Touchdown (on a HTC Wildfire I set up for my Mom as a second phone) and it's implementation is spotty.
I guess you're right - I will have to bite the bullet and try out various options. It will be the only way to know for sure what is necessary. From your comment, I take it the Samsung email (Exchange) client is available as a separate download?
Also, I see you are using HyperDroid-Androidmeda - I was thinking of giving that a go as my first ROM rooting adventure. Is it a variant of the Samsung ROM?
I'd also be very interested about this.

[Q] Help Trying to deploy 500+ Android devices and gmail accounts are being disabled

Hi -
Android Device info:
Android 4.0.4
Samsung Galaxy tab 2 10.1
I am trying to image and deploy 500+ Samsung Galaxy tab 2 10.1 devices. The requirement is, that the 500+ tablets configured and provisioned with the relevant applications for the end-users before delivery...December 31st 2012 - :crying:
I have been manually creating gmail accounts for each device via WiFi since I am not sure of a better way. Now I am starting to notice that some tablets have an error message "Your account has been disabled." Would Google disable these new gmail accounts because they are coming from the same IP address? I am so worried because I can not afford to lose any of the gmail accounts since they are specific to each end user.
P.S.
I am installing a mdm - SOTI
I found a thread discussing Android mass deployment using an "update.zip" if anyone could help me do this I would be willing to pay. I don't see anyway I am going to make this deadline doing each one manually. I was just laid off from this company, but brought back on as a contractor to assist with this last minute project. I would hate to lose this opportunity since its the only one I have.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Hey did you ever get a solution to this?

[Q] Webmail app...?

My apologies if I am posting this in the wrong area, but I seem to be looking for something that is difficult to find. Either that or I REALLY don't know how to ask/search for that which I am looking.
I need an app on my phone [android - Samsung Galaxy S4] for my emails, however I don't want the messages stored on the phone. So I guess I am looking for an app-etized webmail interface. Important features:
The ability to have a formatted signature (bolding, etc). The ability to add a logo would be nice, but not required
The ability to send formatted messages (HTML?)
The ability to use Templates
The ability to send/manage multiple attachments
Those are the biggies that I can think of at the moment.
Every time I find something it seems to want to save/manage the messages locally, and I am just REALLY paranoid about having business emails on something as easily lost/stolen as a phone (regardless of the ability to remote wipe)
Would anyone happen to know of a good solution? Doesn't have to be free, but reasonably-priced is a plus.
Many thanks (and a few beers) in advance!
