Verizon - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, supposedly Verizon is getting this phone. I'm jumping all over it. I've never had a Sony. What's the deal, are they crazy hard to root? Any special process? I'm kinda jacked about this

Look in the "Xperia Z2 Original Android Development" sub-threads. Looks pretty straight forward. But you never know what VZW might add to the software. My interest in the VZW version is pretty high too.

Yeah I really like the feel of Sony.

It's either Z2 or the G3.
Won't buy another Samdung (pun intended) phone. I hate KNOX.

I'm right there with you. Love my G2, looking forward to the G3, and now the Z2 and HTC M8 Prime. Waiting for details on the latter. In the mean time my G2 is getting lots of love.

So does anyone know what the deal is? I read now where is not going to Verizon... Any ideas

Why There Is No Development?!

This is just sad!!!
LG makes awesome devices, the G2 is one of the best devices available now, great hardware, great screen yet no devs or users buy it. I know its like the chicken and the egg, but still, its wired not a lot of people buy it.
HTC has S-OFF and locked bootloader, Samsung also has now that stup!d KNOX, Sony and Moto makes pretty bad devices, why devs don't develop for LG devices?!?! Why?!?!
Because no one has unlocked the G2 bootloader.
Also, it is not a popular phone.

I'm talking about LG in general. The Optimus G doesn't have a lot of roms.
Their phones are not popular, but they are awesome phones!
This thread was with rhetorical questions, I know this is the situation and all that, I wanted to create a discussion about this subject
Is there anyone actively looking for exploits in our bootloader?

I do think I heard some people on the G2 IRC (freenode #lg-g2) are attempting, but I am not certain if this is true.
Anyhoo, no progress has been made currently.
Ha... because its been out for just over a week. AND in the first week we already have root.

Everyone that's demanding development/boot loader unlock...first its only been a week since the phone was released...what did you expect every dev to go out and buy a g2...next why don't you go try to learn all the complexities that are involved in the process...just cause there's no news been made public doesn't mean things aren't being worked on. The appropriate individuals will say something when the time is right..whenever the exploit/exploits are done is when they're done...don't rush our devs, make stupid posts, and pointless threads as that will just piss some of them off...that being said things are in the works, just be patient.

Speaking of the bootloader, is there a button combo that can be used to access it? Or is there no such option on this phone. This is my first LG device so I'm feeling a bit like a fish out of water.

I suspect that Development will come once ppl realize the Note 3 is gonna be locked down pretty hard (might take as long as the first OTA to kill any exploits like the S4). Just give it time.. VZN ppl will want a Nexus 5 like device and the LG G2 will be the closest thing hardware wise to it. Just don't expect crazy dev like a flagship Samsung device or the Moto X but there should be some in the near future.

+1. If nobody knew any better they would believe it was a Nexus 5 just from looking at screen, and the LG emblem. Oh yeah, the N5 is shipping with the same hardware...hmm um Verizon LG N5 *cough cough G2*. Development will come and when it does just root. CM. And Verizon N5 . Clearly LG is learning from their Google Nexus 4 and thats what we see in the G2, lets see the difference when the N5 comes out i bet they will be virtually identical, aesthetics and hardware wise, obviously not the software.

The closest I know, and I dont think it's bootloader, is Volume up and plugging in USB. It brings up a download/firmware upgrade screen, which is also where you can see the Rooted boot flag displayed.
There mere fact that we have root (AND got rid of carrier ID) is indicative that development is happening.
Be patient folks

Yeah that's all I've found so far too. Well that and I did stumble on our hidden diagnostics screen. (##228378 in dialer). There is a field test mode there. Doubt it'll come into play for anything but never know I guess.
You know why there's no one developing on LG phones? Because people $hitting on LG phones like it's their job. Just look at the new arstechnica review of the G2. They made it sound like it's the worst phone ever made.

The Samsung fanboy is strong in that one. He completely blew things out of proportion, like come on, a font bug?! Then he left out how the camera was, just pointing out he got a bad auto image once. Then you read the S4 review and its like God handed it to him himself

I hate to bust people's bubble but I've been around Android and its development community (XDA) a long time and from my experience I'm going to say once a phone lacks any development at the beginning, it usually stays that way to the bitter end. Development won't magically just pick up.
It's just an unfortunate part of being in a crowded phone market with HTC, Samsung and even Sony. Developers rather develop for the more popular headsets and the LG will be on the outside looking in.
I'm not going to sugar coat this, if you bought this phone for development I suggest you return it while you have a return window, cause development....it's not going to happen.
If you fell in love with the G2 phone I suggest you wait for the Nexus version of it and then you're going to have a real development community.

John Snow, I didnt know you had a computer in the North? There are several developers who are trying/finding the best way to unlock the bootloader, what exactly did you expect the developers to do within a week without an unlocked bootloader? Yes, some developers go for only the big devices, and guess what, this is one. You seem to know nothing about anything around here, so dont go spreading lies.

SGS4 vs LG-G2

It seems to me that the G2 is pretty much mimicking the S4... from what I can see from the website http://www.lg.com/us/mobile-phones/g2 ... More than a phone "inspired by you" it looks like a phone "inspired by the S4" lol...
What do you guys think?
I'm not sure how I feel about the volume control on the back of the phone but the snapdragon 800 should thoroughly whoop up on the S4.
I have a feeling this is going to get closed and be moved to the sticky thread. Anyways, the G2 is a solid device and although you can notice the Touchwiz influences, it's really a nice new experience. Definitely a snappy device with an excellent camera.

The G2 has a loki unlock just like the S4. This will probably be the norm from now on since security is being taken more seriously and unlocking bootloaders will take a lot more effort.

Just got an S4, I was thinking of getting the G2 but then I thought Samsung would support the S4 more than LG would the G2 when it came to updates and XDA would have more hacks. We shall see.
The G2 is a nice phone, but with the Nexus 5 being based on it I can't see why anyone would really want it unless they really can't leave Verizon. Also, I really hate how they completely nerfed the US models with non-removable batteries and no expandable storage. Those 2 things alone make the S4 a better phone for me still.
I checked out the G2 and it is a very nice, fast, powerful phone. The specs and battery are great. The camera is also very good and very fast.
It is worth considering. However the S4 has expandable storage and a removable battery.
Either way you go you probably can't go wrong.

Next phone?

Hey guys. So my upgrade will be in March which isn't far away and I'm looking for a new phone. I'm very disappointed with the gs4 on Verizon since the bootloader is locked. Yes, I have safestrap but I love AOSP vs Touchwiz. I've looked up some phones coming out this year such as gs5 and HTC one+ (m8). I really liked the design of the HTC one and wish I bought that over the gs4. Just wondering what you guys would get next. The gs5 or something different since i almost feel like Samsung is following apple's tracks. Also do you even like the gs4? Let me know what you all think..

Love what S4...what bootloader? I had my best times with the DX and its locked bootloader. This whole BL thing is so overblown with the S4. Repetitive threads and posts about it...it's like a broken record.

Don't like Samsung's attitude toward customers.
Probably won't buy another Samsung device. Like the device, don't like the company.
We'll see with the GS5. I doubt I'll bite.
Having the microSD support is compelling but, I can get by without it now that Meenova has the keychain USB-OTG adapter from microSD cards.
We'll see what LG and HTC come out with.
I like the Sony, but Verizon and Sony are like oil and water.
From all reports, the S5 is going to be a beast. I, for one, plan on picking it up the day it's released.
I'll probably stay with my MDK S4 that's on its way to me for a long while. If that one should break and I need a new one... Hard to say what I'd do. The S4 is awesome, and I'm sure the S5 will be an amazing phone, but like stated above, let's be honest, they're going to have that S5 locked up so tight its probably going to be hard to do anything on it.
If the G2 has the removable battery and external SD card, I'd be all over it.

LG G3 vs HTC One (M8)

I am due for an upgrade tomorrow (the 13th of August) and this phone is looking really good to me, the only problem I have is the bootloader is locked. I am coming from the Samsung Galaxy S3 with an unlocked bootloader, and I don't want to buy a phone that can't be bootloader unlocked. Should I buy this phone and hope our awesome dev's will get this thing unlocked? Or should I go with a device that CAN be unlocked?

If you look through the Verizon and AT&T boot loader unlock bounty threads it seems like the devs think that they can unlock the bootloader. Hopefully it will happen but I do think that the firmware on the g3 is the best looking oem skin out there other than vanilla aosp

Can't believe you posted this today. I am ordering a G3, right after I post this, to replace my rooted/s-offed M8. I got the G3 for my wife, a week or two ago, and have coveted it since. The beautiful display, screen size, and camera, have convinced me to make the switch. I will miss flashing kernels and ROMs, but with root, Nova, and Xposed, I can make the G3 look and perform the way I want. If the bootloader gets unlocked, it will be icing on the cake.
I replaced a M8 with the G3 and could not be happier. The build quality of the M8 is wonderful but the camera was terrible. The G3 is basically the same size with a bigger screen and much lighter. I will miss the Viper M8 rom but with root and Xposed the G3 is fantastic.
Where do I find these bounty threads at?
Edit: never mind, they were easy to find. Should've looked before I posted.

I haven't owned an M8 but I just want to add that the G3 is an amazing phone. I know there's been quite a bit of talk about the QHD display not being worth it.... But it totally is. That's why the Note 4 and Nexus 6 are coming out with QHD next as well.
Battery life on the stock Interactive Governor is actually pretty amazing too for such a big display, obviously there are people on here who say it's terrible but what can you do.... Most of us who remove the bloat and Greenify things have absolutely no problems with the Battery life. And the Snapdragon 801 can handle anything you throw at it. Get the G3!
And BTW our G3 devs have gone so far too say that the bootloader is going to get unlocked without a doubt... Their working on it. Until then Stock Rooted with xposed and Nova still kicks a$$
- Tapatalked from the G3
I agree with the majority here.
I've never even held and M8 but I can tell you that the G3 is solid.
I also run it rooted with xposed and nova and it's great.
If they actually do get the bootloader unlocked or figure out another way to get custom roms, I can only imagine how bleepin fast this phone will get.
I'm coming from an S4 and this phone already is better in every way.
Thank you to everyone that replied here, my wife and I are due for upgrades today and I have decided to get the G3. I tried to get my wife to get the HTC One (M8) but she's sold on the Galaxy S5. I have read reviews and watched videos of the G3 and I can not wait to get it in my hands. Again, thank you everyone that replied to my post.

You will dont be second guess yourself about the G3. I have owned the M8 and while flashing was fun it does not compare to the g3 at all. I actually sold my M8 and used that money to cancel my contract on the m8 and used the rest to get the g3 on edge and pay taxes and everything.

Definitely! I couldn't change her mind, we both came from Samsung Galaxy S3's and she love's Samsung. We already got our phones and she love's her S5, so she's happy and that makes me happy. I am loving my G3 though. Haven't had a single issue yet and battery life is great! Haven't rooted yet though, I think I'm going to give it a few days before I root, or maybe wait till the bootloader gets unlocked then just go all out then. Ohh, and I absolutely love the LG keyboard, heck, I love the LG UI, it's beautiful. LG did a kick ass job on the UI.

[Q] Why is the G3 so cheap?

Using a Droid incredible these days, and i swear i'd throw it off a cliff if i had another phone...
Looking to upgrade, and I notice that while the Note 3 and One M8, the other devices I'm cross-shopping, go on sale to <$1 and return to a higher price, the G3 is perma-stuck below $1. Is it cause no one buys it? Or major problems? cause the specs are top notch, so in theory it should cost more...
Thanks!

No idea why it's perma-discounted so low but all have their pros and cons. If you look at reviews most are happy with it. The most common complaints being the 4k screens impact on battery life (3.5-4 hours screen on time) and some ui lag in stock applications (messenger, settings, launcher). Overall I wouldn't trade it for anything else out there, but that is due to the fact that the community has bypassed the bootloader allowing for custom roms. If I had to keep the stock lg software or if I was not the type to modify my phone, my choice would probably be the M8. M8 has mediocre camera and display, but much better software optimization. Personally I won't even consider Samsung, but maybe that'll change if they ditch touchwiz like rumored.

In my opinion... LG wants more market share so they priced the phone low and made a lot of them. HTC and Samsung are bigger players in the market and LG wants to make it's mark. G3 owners are getting a good phone and a good deal. That's not to say the others aren't good as well, but for the price - the value and quality is there on the G3. No major defects, problems, or anything like that.
I guess you can always take a test drive and compare - depending on your seller's policies. For ex: I bought an S5 on Amazon and hated it sooo much, but their policy is one free exchange within a 2 week period so I grabbed a G3 instead and couldn't be happier with that choice. It may be a pain but a test drive can keep you from getting stuck with a phone you hate.

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess its the usual loss leader marketing scheme, and its working pretty well. I suppose i should be glad that the M8 and the N3 have increased in price. both of those require lots of hoop-jumping to get BL-unlocks [or not in the N3's case], while its so easy with the G3.
So i just picked up my G3 from Amazon this weekend for a penny+tax, $44.01 including shipping. Already owned the G2 which was perfectly but I sat on my upgrade for about 6 months and finally took the plunge... The few sales/reps I've asked about the price being so low basically told me that the G3 hasn't been marketed very well and non power users are sucked into the Crapple/Junksung riptide. So far its great, haven't been able to root yet due to 12B stump being patched, IOroot adb issues, and towelroot not working. M8 would definitely be my second choice but camera and display quality are very important. No better time than now to before price changes @sidewinder_x5

Im about to attempt the 10B downgrade right now actually-just fired up the PC! I'm a little hesitant due to reading about bricks but I can't take not crackflashing a day longer! Haha And as far as Amazon goes it was a penny for the phone and $40.00 exactly in taxes. That's all and it was delivered in 2 days.
Its easy to do. Almost impossible to mess it up. Ive had mine since around Christmas, and i love it. then again, Im coming from an S4. LOL.
After years of using Samsung, I went from a Note 3 to a G2 which I was very happy with. I sold my G2 for $280 back in October and bought the G3 for $300 (brand new) from a local guy who went back to Iphone. G3 is my favorite phone I've had so far.

Im about to attempt the 10B downgrade right now actually-just fired up the PC! I'm a little hesitant due to reading about bricks but I can't take not crackflashing a day longer! haha, well best of luck to you! and well, that gives one more reason to buy from amazon. i'm scared if i go to verizon or target, theyll charge me tax. and the upgrade fee. and the activation fee.

the G2/G3 are amazing phones. i looked at getting a G2 before i arrived in the US, but the price was a bit much. glad there are places where i can get the G3 for close to nothing :good:
I enjoy my g3. And with the impending official lollipop update our development will become that much more awesome.
I was hesitant to go back to flashing roms myself. But since I have no need for softcard I said f it. Best decision ever. Basically I have a 5.5'' nexus 6 with removable battery and expandable memory lol.
Who's excited for the VR for g3? Who thinks lg will be nice enough to give these out like they did the free spare battery lol
