WiFi tether for Galaxy S5 w/o root works using Foxfi - Galaxy S 5 Themes and Apps

Just wanted to let everyone who didn't already know. Foxfi wifi tether is working on our Galaxy S5 without root. I have tested it and it is working. We don't have root yet but we can still use WiFi tether for now.

For me, foxfi on unrooted atnt gs5 didn't work. Any news about rooting this variant?

Nope . . .did with another tether app, and i do get the trusted certificate warning every time I reboot, but the release notes said to expect that . .

It doesn't work for US Cellular either. Synchronoss TEDC keeps getting in the way.
Sent from my SM-G900R4

It is specific for US terminals?. Because i've the international one and the thether option (wifi zone) is on the quick menú by default.
Regards.

Has anyone installed the update that is being pushed out fro Verizon? Wanted to make sure it didn't stop foxfi.
Thanks

Did not work on my unrooted ATT Galaxy S5 being used on T-mobile.
I called ATT to unlock this feature, they asked me to call Samsung. Called Samsung, the guy wasted 2 hours & called ATT & T-mobile and finally advised me to contact ATT to unlock this feature. I have asked him to give me in writing. I paid for and own the phone and ATT has no rights to block some features.
I wish someone initiates a class action suit on these people.

FoxFi worked on my Verizon S5 before I rooted it (this was a while ago), but I had to use the certificate method. I tried recently with an AT&T S5 active, but I couldn't find the certificate option anymore...

a bit of research.....

imho USA providers take a lot of effort to crap your terminals with unneeded SW while locking many features. Users learn this the hard way..... maybe a more in depth research before buying would help.
And of course.... this fórum can make the difference once you already jumped into a new terminal: rooting, unlocking, flasing ROMs... is all a click away from your fingers once you learn a bit. I'll take this way rather tan calling Customer Service....

[Q] T-Mobile ROM on Verizon S5

I have a Verizon S5 rooted with safestrap. I know I can't fully convert my s5 to a T-Mobile one because the boot loader is locked but I would like to get WiFi calling working. I flashed Alliance ROM and could not get WiFi calling to work at all. It would say enabling and never change afterwards. I'm wondering if there is work around or will WiFi calling just not work until we get our bootloaders unlocked?

I do believe only t-mobile supports wifi calling, flashing a tmobile rom on a verizon phone wont make it work.
Yes tmobile wifi calling on another carrier will not work. This is a subject that has been gone over time and time again. Now if you wait, supposedly att and verizon are going to start rolling out there own wifi calling. I do not know when so please do not ask me. Use the ever usefull google search to get this answered. I am not gonna search for the answers for you.

No You would have to install one of the latest complete factory tmobile roms to get wifi calling to work. And the last time i checked, verizon s5 is locked down, and can only be flashed using safestrap << which does not allow flashing of kernels. I could be wrong but i know that is what was happening on att which is why i left, cause of the locked down bootloaders..
you will have to get an s5 that isnt locked down, I would definatly stay away from ATT and Verizon , untill someone is able to completely unlock those phones, which doesnt seem like it is gonna happen,
Add the T-Mobile APN
You need to add an APN for t-mobile to get mobile internet access. I can't post the apn setting here because I don't have enough posts to include a url in my post and the settings include a url. Just google it.

[Q] OTA for rooted SG S4 SCH-I545

I rooted my Verizon Galaxy S4 and then changed APN settings for it to work on T-mobile. Everything works fine except the MMS, but that's not an issue at hands( i can always use whatsapp or similar apps). The question is will i be able to get OTA for the Lollipop once it comes out for GS4 (rumors say it should be out really soon). Please let me know what I should do to be able to get the Lollipop. Please assume I know nothing about these processes (which is true, i just can follow precise directions) and if possible provide step-by-step instructions.
Thanks.

Why did you change your APN settings to T-Mobile??? That doesn't make any sense! You will probably get lollipop a year from now if at all! Don't expect lollipop on your Verizon phone any time soon...

No, not officially from Google! Your phone is still a Verizon phone, and you'll get the update when Verizon decides to push it out. But how does that phone work on T-Mobile at all?! It shouldn't be working at all with T-Mobile Sim...

I have done some research and came across people who said the phone should not work, people who said that some additional modules need to be installed in order for it to work, and other people who said all i have to do is change APN. I chose the third option as it required the least effort and was easily reversible ( i think). After changing the APN settings this Sunday ( 3 days ago), the phone makes call on Tmobile network, has 4G LTE and lower speed internet, sends/accept SMS (not MMS).

To get Lollipop when it comes out for our Phone. Whenever it does, just use your computer and flash the lollipop TAR using ODIN. Or you could just download the OTA.zip and sideboard it from the stock recovery. Just come back to this site after Lollipop comes out and there will be a guide.
Edit: wait... if all you changed was APNs then you can still take the update through settings.

To let you know, a while back someone posted a guide in the general on how to enable TMobile AWS on our phone.

WiFi Tether Trick?

Still on the grandfathered unlimited data plan with Verizon, so no tethering in my plan without Foxfi, etc., which was blocked a while back. With the S7edge, we could do that trick where you eject the sim and enable tethering if you time it right when you push the sim back in... Going to need to find a way to get tethering again... sigh.
I could tether fine with my unlocked Note 8. No FoxFi was required. I just started hotspot from the settings. I am on the grandfathered unlimited plan as well.

If you order thru Samsung website and get the unlocked version there is no WIFI hotspot check so it works right out of the box, plus its cheaper than ordering thru Verizon.
Yea, I'm aware of the unlocked option, though I have heard some reports of some carrier specific features such as VoLTE, voice of wifi, visual voicemail, etc. not working on the unlocked version.
Anyone w/ grandfathered umlimited data on Verizon that has their S9+ that has tried this trick? Picking mine up on Friday...
I've got gUDP with an unlocked s9+ from BB and tethering worked today.
Unlocked S9
I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but just confirming I understand what you guys are saying. With an unlocked Galaxy S9 you can tether right out of the box if you still have the grandfathered unlimited data plan? Is all you do is swap sim card from your old phone? How do you get future os updates and are they going to be updates that won't affect this tethering access? Thanks

That would be updates pushed to unlocked S9/S9+ phones. Those are generally a bit slower than carrier updates, but they do come from Samsung.

Yes all i had to do was insert my verizon sim, and open hotspot and it worked. Now the only thing im missing from the Verizon model is wifi calling, i never used that anyway so its no big deal for me.
Thanks again, just wanted to make sure I didn't mess anything up. Really appreciate the quick response.
Returning S9
Cannot get Wifi to work on the new S9 from verizon. I did a quick search before buying which said foxfi worked but alas NOPE.
So I am going to return the phone to verizon and just wait I upgraded from s4 which was nice for a week!
I have grandfathered unlimited data so my options are limited.
Bought an unlocked s9 plus straight from Samsung and my hot spot worked right away like the guys on here said it would. I don't believe a Version version will let you unless you pay for one of their tethering plans.
Verizon - Samsung S9+ - Unlocked?
I'm picking up my phone through Verizon but they said they would unlock it. I currently have the Galaxy S7 and was doing the sim card trick. Has anyone else tried with the S9+? But if I get "unlocked" I'm wondering if it will work as you guys have mentioned here. So clutch to have your own hotspot when there isn't one or its slow.

Side question...
I see a stock firmware collection website at www . getdroidtips . com / samsung-galaxy-s9-plus-stock-firmware /
and wondering if it is possible to install stock firmware (without unlock) on a carrier-locked S9/S9+ so that can enable tether on a grandfather unlimited account?
Note: I am on AT&T grandfather unlimited plan and AT&T does not allow me to tether.

All firmware are carrier branded,
To bypass AT&T tethering you can either use an APP or use the U1 firmware.

Yes, and Secure Wi-Fi has now been added. I think it previously existed only on the European firmwares. Now we get it, too.
Any way to see if AT&T Wifi Calling will work as I do not see the option in Settings? I have US Unlocked GS9 on AT&T

Despite what the websites like to post, there really isn't a VZW U1 and an ATT U1. There's just XAA U1. You'll get Wi-Fi Calling on every carrier with it now, except for ATT.

Reading up on it (short summary) this is because AT&T uses a database of IMEI numbers to provision WiFi calling and VoLTE. Since our IMEI numbers from our phones are not in that database we won't be able to use WiFi calling or VoLTE.
Makes sense but is ridiculous for AT&T to restrict it. Has anyone ever called to ask to have thier Unlocked IMEI added to this "list" so that these features will work? Seems like it is a disadvantage for AT&T if it works for TMo and now Verizon but not AT&T...?
Just curious...

It's odd for sure. Verizon has always had VoLTE on unlocked too. At least since the S7. Probably before that. ATT has never felt the need to change the policy.

Who can say if it's disadvantageous or not, for all we know it might be the technology differences between the networks. Also it does make sense... having specific IMEI numbers known to connect to carrier specific services like wifi calling and VoLTE ensures that everything works. It doesn't make it convenient for us and I will admit it would be nice to have the features.. but for calling via wifi there are options.
Personally I use pbx in a flash and bria softphone. With the right VoIP provider it's a good setup and doesn't break the bank at all. I haven't even spent more then 5 bucks maybe in a month. For me this is better then wifi calling and I don't have any problems.
As for adding our IMEI to that database I tried inquiring about it, but I do recall reading where some people may have had luck in doing this. I suspect it may require a bit of luck and/or perserveriance after my last discussion with AT&T customer service.
I explained the situation and what needed to be done while being placed on hold a few times. As the call continued I tried to be patient with the person I spoke too, but I admit it is not easy when he is saying that just because I see H data speed that it's actually VoLTE. When I mentioned the speed test and how it was H data speed (and that H data speeds are not VoLTE) he was saying that H data speeds were like blazing fast compared to LTE..
I had to politely finish the call before I either started to laugh or feel sorry for that rep.

In my case I tried to be patient with the person I spoke too. After waiting on hold a few times the representative tried to say everything was normal.. and then proceeded but to say that just because I see H+ speed that it's actually VoLTE. The only thing I've seen some people do successfully to get VoLTE working on an unbranded unlocked device is to have AT&T provision a SIM card to an IMEI of a phone that is AT&T branded and capable of VoLTE. Then use that SIM card on the unbranded unlocked device.

No problem. You're not the first person to look for it in the wrong place. U1 builds always place the setting there. So they stayed consistent doing it this way.

I recently purchased this phone unlocked through best buy. How/where can I download Verizon firmware to utilize wifi calling? Google, Verizon and Motorola have ran me on circles trying to solve this.
Bestbuy sells both the unlocked version and the Verizon version. Obviously the Verizon version would work with wifi calling, but what about the unlocked version?

I have the unlocked version and it doesn't come with Wi-Fi calling. It runs only the android 10 software and Google apps for the messages and phone. I found a setting for wifi messages (though I've been having trouble sending and receiving) but no setting in the phone app or the device settings.
I'm hoping if I can find the Verizon firmware to download and enable wifi calling.

Check under the advanced settings in the mobile network settings. If it's not there, then Verizon might be blocking it. Cricket does the same thing, but they'll sometimes enable it for you if you ask nicely.

I have checked under those settings and there is nothing listed as Wi-Fi calling. On VPN and Private DNA.
Would you be able to give a screen shot or write out what you click on to see where out phones differ? Baffling why my phone doesn't not have that option and Verizon has been no help in figuring it out.
I bought a g power phone for my son from Google fi, but activated it on Verizon. It works on verizon's network with a verizon sim. I havent been able to make wifi calling work, any suggestions? Looked in advanced setting under mobile connections no wifi calling choices. Any help would be greatly appreciated
I do not have this phone but i used unlocked phones (3 different ones) on Verizon. Currently a razer 2 on Verizon. If you do not buy a carrier locked phone from them you can not have wifi calling. That is one perk of buying the phone from them. They will let you have volte but thats about it. , No visual voicemail either.
I understand this might be a dumb question, but why is WiFi calling so important? I would have thought most people would use Hangouts, Zoom, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, or Duo. Any of those effectively provide WiFi calling.

This is for a older person who is not tech savvy. The person just wants to make calls and not have to setup any of those other apps, too complicated.

WiFi calling is very handy if you use your phone in places where you might not have reliable cell coverage but do have WiFi (e.g., a basement, etc.). I've never tried it, but that might include an international location where you can't use cell but have access to WiFi.
My carrier is Sprint, and I can verify that the WiFi calling function is present under Settings, Network & Internet, Mobile Network, Advanced, and nestled under "Calling"

I'm in the process to switch to visible. Did you just put the sim and good to go? Or you need to add some extra APN to work?

On the G Power, yes , for whatever reason it works right away without messing with apns. Literally everything works. Other phones though you do have to add apns and mess about.

Do you think I need to factory reset my phone and then insert the new visible sim card? I currently I'm using at&t. Or doesn't matter. Did you place the visible sim on a brand new phone or switch from a previous carrier?

It was in a brand new phone yes, but no I don't think it matters. Should be good to go. If anything just restart the phone.
It's also my understanding that Verizon does not allow any Advanced Calling features on a carrier unlocked phone. With my last phone, however (Z4), I was able to flash the VZW image to enable those features on my unlocked phone: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...ng-and-root-with-xt1980-3-on-verizon.3994025/
I just tried a similar process with the Moto G Power. I have a XT2041-4, which I have bootloader unlocked. I then downloaded the VZW rom from lolinet: https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/sofia/official/VZW/
and patched the boot.img using Magisk. I then followed this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/moto-g-power-flashing-guide.4159301/
to flash the VZW image (XT2041-7) onto my XT2041-4 (including the patched boot.img). Fingers crossed.... And bootloop. So I recovered to RETUS via LMSA. But I haven't given up hope yet. Maybe someone else can chime in.
Got it working...
HD and WiFi Voice and Video Calling on XT2041-4 with Verizon
Prerequisites: You must bootloader unlock your XT2041-4. https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a As far as I'm aware, this only applies to XT2041-4 on Verizon Wireless. To be clear, the XT2041-4...
