[Q] OTA for rooted SG S4 SCH-I545 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I rooted my Verizon Galaxy S4 and then changed APN settings for it to work on T-mobile. Everything works fine except the MMS, but that's not an issue at hands( i can always use whatsapp or similar apps). The question is will i be able to get OTA for the Lollipop once it comes out for GS4 (rumors say it should be out really soon). Please let me know what I should do to be able to get the Lollipop. Please assume I know nothing about these processes (which is true, i just can follow precise directions) and if possible provide step-by-step instructions.
Thanks.

Why did you change your APN settings to T-Mobile??? That doesn't make any sense! You will probably get lollipop a year from now if at all! Don't expect lollipop on your Verizon phone any time soon...

I switched service provider from Verizon to Tmobile and wanted to keep the GS4. I still have the old verizon sim, but verizon service has been disconnected. Is there no way for me to the get lollipop?

No, not officially from Google! Your phone is still a Verizon phone, and you'll get the update when Verizon decides to push it out. But how does that phone work on T-Mobile at all?! It shouldn't be working at all with T-Mobile Sim...

I have done some research and came across people who said the phone should not work, people who said that some additional modules need to be installed in order for it to work, and other people who said all i have to do is change APN. I chose the third option as it required the least effort and was easily reversible ( i think). After changing the APN settings this Sunday ( 3 days ago), the phone makes call on Tmobile network, has 4G LTE and lower speed internet, sends/accept SMS (not MMS).

Honestly, I'm surprised that it works! As for the MMS problem- verify the settings: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc and it should work, since everything else works....

that is exactly what i have and MMS is not working. I'm not really concerned about the MMS, just trying to figure out how to get lollipop.
thanks

To get Lollipop when it comes out for our Phone. Whenever it does, just use your computer and flash the lollipop TAR using ODIN. Or you could just download the OTA.zip and sideboard it from the stock recovery. Just come back to this site after Lollipop comes out and there will be a guide.
Edit: wait... if all you changed was APNs then you can still take the update through settings.

[Q] T-Mobile ROM on Verizon S5

I have a Verizon S5 rooted with safestrap. I know I can't fully convert my s5 to a T-Mobile one because the boot loader is locked but I would like to get WiFi calling working. I flashed Alliance ROM and could not get WiFi calling to work at all. It would say enabling and never change afterwards. I'm wondering if there is work around or will WiFi calling just not work until we get our bootloaders unlocked?

I do believe only t-mobile supports wifi calling, flashing a tmobile rom on a verizon phone wont make it work.
Yes tmobile wifi calling on another carrier will not work. This is a subject that has been gone over time and time again. Now if you wait, supposedly att and verizon are going to start rolling out there own wifi calling. I do not know when so please do not ask me. Use the ever usefull google search to get this answered. I am not gonna search for the answers for you.

I understand that WiFi calling for T-Mobile won't work for Verizon service. But I have T-Mobile service. With a T-Mobile Sim in my Verizon s5. I don't have Verizon at all is what I'm saying. So shouldn't WiFi calling work under these circumstances?

No You would have to install one of the latest complete factory tmobile roms to get wifi calling to work. And the last time i checked, verizon s5 is locked down, and can only be flashed using safestrap << which does not allow flashing of kernels. I could be wrong but i know that is what was happening on att which is why i left, cause of the locked down bootloaders..
you will have to get an s5 that isnt locked down, I would definatly stay away from ATT and Verizon , untill someone is able to completely unlock those phones, which doesnt seem like it is gonna happen,
Add the T-Mobile APN
You need to add an APN for t-mobile to get mobile internet access. I can't post the apn setting here because I don't have enough posts to include a url in my post and the settings include a url. Just google it.

S4 SCH-I545 APN settings.

Okay so I am absolutely baffled at this point. I've searched google up and down for answers.
I purchased my S4 "factory GSM unlocked" from ebay. turned out being a SCH-I545 from verizon.
I'm trying to use it on net10 (ATT network) I have the SIM inserted and registered the SIM. its a "4g LTE ATT network SIM". Everything is good other than I can't get 3G or 4G.
I'm aware of adding the correct APN setting for my phone. The problem is that there is a stupid Verizon default APN that is grayed out and i can't edit it. I can add another APN and save it and it shows up, but I can't make it default or even click it to select it. It's like the verizon APN is pre-programmed and unremovable by default.
I tried using APN backup and restore with no luck because it doesnt work with the S4.
IDK WTF is wrong with it but I'm almost at the point of sending it back through ebay.
can anyone help?
BTW, it's rooted and on 4.4.2 stock
I'm willing to donate to the site/devoloper that helps me solve this issue. It's starting to piss me off.
well i messed around with it. and got something strange. it's stil not 3G or 4G, instead it says "H+"....whatever that is. I can browse the internet with it.
still would obviously prefer 4G.
still willing to donate to anyone that can get me on 4G.

Im running straight talk on my s4. I used the bring your own phone package. I'm currently looking for ways to put my phone on 4g as well. ILets keep this post going. 2 heads are better than 1. Also how exactly did you get your sch-I545 to update to 4.4.2?
There is a Verizon to ST (straight talk) thread somewhere in the S4 forums, I think it's in general. Maybe you could pick up some tips from there.

No idea buddy, it came from ebay with that on it. I got it rooted though by flashing to I545_NC5, rooting with towelroot, then flashing back to NK1 stock. Worked flawlessly. I've tried multiple APN settings from various sources, all with no luck . Just the H+ network connectivity and no 2,3, or 4G.

Not sure if this will help but a while back I was playing with an international ROM and the APN settings were grayed out.
Turning on Airplane Mode enabled me to change them.

S4 SCH-i545 Can't send messages on 4g

I recently switched carriers. From Verizon, I went to T-Mobile. As expected, I'm already having issues. I can RECEIVE texts, but cannot send them on 4G LTE (only when I unexpectedly get "H+"). I can also access the internet. I have contacted T-Mobile, but honestly, they don't seem to care about my issue. I already manually changed the APN. The only thing I can think of is that my phone is currently on Lollipop, which is not yet supported by T-Mobile. Could this be the root of all this? Any help would be appreciated.

Many of us have gone rounds with T-Mobile. Myself, I've also dealt with Samsung and Verizon as well. Haven't had a resolution since I believe May. One "fix" you can do is add a subject to every text. It'll send everything as an MMS. Another thing is if you're rooted you can go in and turn off LTE. So far, that's all I know of to help. Someone told me a particular ROM allowed them to text on T-Mobile, but I've only heard it from one person so far.

On my rooted SCH-I545 on Cricket, I installed Advanced Signal Status (PlayStore)
Click Additional Info at bottom of screen
Click Phone Information
Change LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)
This worked for me, not a perfect soln, and I still haven't fixed the + sign in the incoming calls (still working on that one).

I've done the same as above. Still haven't figured out a way to get SMS + 4G LTE :crying:

I have an unlocked S9+ originally from T-Mobile. WiFi Calling is gone.

OK, so I was with T-Mobile forever, and I bought this phone from them at launch. I decided to switch over to MetroPCS by T-Mobile because it's cheaper, so I paid off my phone then unlocked it (Even though I didn't need too, the Metro SIM worked in it before I unlocked it).
It worked fine for two weeks, and I had WiFi calling and everything, and then the RJ5 (I believe?) update came out, and when my phone booted up it said new sim detected, and WiFi calling was gone. My APN settings were set to MetroPCS', so I set it back to the T-Mobile one since it's essentially the same network, but the WiFi calling option is *completely* gone; it's not there, trust me. I call MetroPCS support and they said they can't enable it for devices that weren't bought from them, and I tried to argue like sure you can, send it up to a higher level support team, but I could hardly understand her and gave up.
I went into a MetroPCS store and they had a spare T-Mobile SIM, popped it in, boom WiFi calling was back.
Come OneUI Pie update one, I opt in and update, and voila, WiFi calling is back!
I just downloaded the second update last night, and now it's gone again. This **** is driving me crazy, if anyone can help me figure out a way to fix this I will love you forever.
Wow, that was a gripping good yarn! I think there's a good chance that if you switch to the unlocked G965U1 firmware, it might work. I have an unlocked Verizon S9+ running on TMO, and once I flashed it to U1, wifi calling and volte worked automatically. I'm not positive how it will be with Metro but it is worth looking into. When you flash the collect unlocked firmware, when the phone boots up it will detect your sim and then reboot and configure all the settings for you.
P.S. I don't suppose there's Metro firmware out there?
I don't think there's Metro firmware, because my updates still come from T-Mobile. T-Mobile owns Metro. So what you're saying is flash the firmware via Odin and my phone would be like truly unlocked and I would get updates from Samsung rather than T-Mobile? I don't want to go through all this if it isn't a a certain fix, but sadly there's no way to tell that.

For some carriers, the Wifi calling requires the phone to have carrier firmware. Verizon is one. I bought my 9+ from Samsung unlocked, and it didn't have wifi calling on Verizon until I reflashed the phone (using Patched ODIN) to a Verizon firmware and Wifi calling works... as does the Verizon bloat, but most of that can be disabled with Package Disabler pro or similar app.

I don't think MetroPCS has it's own firmware for the s9+. Plus, they're owned by T-Mobile now. The plan I'm on is called MetroPCS by T-Mobile lol. This is driving me nuts.

Out of curiosity I read around a little bit and it seems to be really hit and miss, which definitely seems to match up with your experience. I have not, thanks for the link, I shall try that. Funnily enough, there was a hotfix pushed out last night and WiFi calling not working was on that list. I now have the WiFi calling icon in the notification bar, and it shows like it's on, but it doesn't actually work, and me pressing it does nothing. The setting itself still isn't in connections or anywhere in the settings. This is so dumb, lol.

Just want to confirm that the Moto G Power works on Verizon in the USA. I see it has been rooted and such so this looks like my new phone to replace my trusty Shamu.
Thank you,

Edit: I contacted Verizon via Twitter and they confirmed it will work on their network. C&P their reply...I appreciate the prompt response. Thanks for clarifying this information for me. I reviewed information internally and the Moto G Power XT2041 is compatible with our network. Does this help answer your question?

I recently purchased this phone unlocked through best buy. How/where can I download Verizon firmware to utilize wifi calling? Google, Verizon and Motorola have ran me on circles trying to solve this.
Bestbuy sells both the unlocked version and the Verizon version. Obviously the Verizon version would work with wifi calling, but what about the unlocked version?

I have the unlocked version and it doesn't come with Wi-Fi calling. It runs only the android 10 software and Google apps for the messages and phone. I found a setting for wifi messages (though I've been having trouble sending and receiving) but no setting in the phone app or the device settings.
I'm hoping if I can find the Verizon firmware to download and enable wifi calling.

Check under the advanced settings in the mobile network settings. If it's not there, then Verizon might be blocking it. Cricket does the same thing, but they'll sometimes enable it for you if you ask nicely.

I have checked under those settings and there is nothing listed as Wi-Fi calling. On VPN and Private DNA.
Would you be able to give a screen shot or write out what you click on to see where out phones differ? Baffling why my phone doesn't not have that option and Verizon has been no help in figuring it out.
I bought a g power phone for my son from Google fi, but activated it on Verizon. It works on verizon's network with a verizon sim. I havent been able to make wifi calling work, any suggestions? Looked in advanced setting under mobile connections no wifi calling choices. Any help would be greatly appreciated
I do not have this phone but i used unlocked phones (3 different ones) on Verizon. Currently a razer 2 on Verizon. If you do not buy a carrier locked phone from them you can not have wifi calling. That is one perk of buying the phone from them. They will let you have volte but thats about it. , No visual voicemail either.
I understand this might be a dumb question, but why is WiFi calling so important? I would have thought most people would use Hangouts, Zoom, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, or Duo. Any of those effectively provide WiFi calling.

This is for a older person who is not tech savvy. The person just wants to make calls and not have to setup any of those other apps, too complicated.

WiFi calling is very handy if you use your phone in places where you might not have reliable cell coverage but do have WiFi (e.g., a basement, etc.). I've never tried it, but that might include an international location where you can't use cell but have access to WiFi.
My carrier is Sprint, and I can verify that the WiFi calling function is present under Settings, Network & Internet, Mobile Network, Advanced, and nestled under "Calling"

Do you think I need to factory reset my phone and then insert the new visible sim card? I currently I'm using at&t. Or doesn't matter. Did you place the visible sim on a brand new phone or switch from a previous carrier?

It was in a brand new phone yes, but no I don't think it matters. Should be good to go. If anything just restart the phone.
It's also my understanding that Verizon does not allow any Advanced Calling features on a carrier unlocked phone. With my last phone, however (Z4), I was able to flash the VZW image to enable those features on my unlocked phone: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...ng-and-root-with-xt1980-3-on-verizon.3994025/
I just tried a similar process with the Moto G Power. I have a XT2041-4, which I have bootloader unlocked. I then downloaded the VZW rom from lolinet: https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/sofia/official/VZW/
and patched the boot.img using Magisk. I then followed this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/moto-g-power-flashing-guide.4159301/
to flash the VZW image (XT2041-7) onto my XT2041-4 (including the patched boot.img). Fingers crossed.... And bootloop. So I recovered to RETUS via LMSA. But I haven't given up hope yet. Maybe someone else can chime in.
Got it working...

Prerequisites: You must bootloader unlock your XT2041-4. https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a As far as I'm aware, this only applies to XT2041-4 on Verizon Wireless. To be clear, the XT2041-4...
