S4 SCH-i545 Can't send messages on 4g - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I recently switched carriers. From Verizon, I went to T-Mobile. As expected, I'm already having issues. I can RECEIVE texts, but cannot send them on 4G LTE (only when I unexpectedly get "H+"). I can also access the internet. I have contacted T-Mobile, but honestly, they don't seem to care about my issue. I already manually changed the APN. The only thing I can think of is that my phone is currently on Lollipop, which is not yet supported by T-Mobile. Could this be the root of all this? Any help would be appreciated.

Many of us have gone rounds with T-Mobile. Myself, I've also dealt with Samsung and Verizon as well. Haven't had a resolution since I believe May. One "fix" you can do is add a subject to every text. It'll send everything as an MMS. Another thing is if you're rooted you can go in and turn off LTE. So far, that's all I know of to help. Someone told me a particular ROM allowed them to text on T-Mobile, but I've only heard it from one person so far.

Hey

Thanks

On my rooted SCH-I545 on Cricket, I installed Advanced Signal Status (PlayStore)
Click Additional Info at bottom of screen
Click Phone Information
Change LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)
This worked for me, not a perfect soln, and I still haven't fixed the + sign in the incoming calls (still working on that one).

[Q]OOC Verizon S4 on Tmobile?

I've done some research on the topic but am having a hard time finding a definative answer on the topic.
I bought my phone thru Verizon (paid in full) intially to ensure I would keep my unlimited data plan. Since this purchase I've discovered that T-Mobile has s $30/mo plan that fits my lifestyle just fine. My intent is to sell my plan (craigslist/ebay/etc) to get out of our contract and make some $$$ on the side.
When I bought this phone 1 of the major draws I saw was that, even though it's a Verizon phone, it wasGSM compatible. I've read plenty of posts about users throwing in a ATT sim card and being good to go. On the tmobile side of things, the results aren't as clear.
So.... Long story short, I'm looking for a definative answer if the Verizon GS4 will fully work on T-Mobile's GSM network and if so, where might one find some guidance on what I need to do if there are any necessary steps involved.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Plain and simple... No, the Verizon GS4 will not work on Tmobile. Verizon is cdma and tmobile is gsm. It will not work

I'm a VZW customer and I work at T-Mobile. I've tried popping in my manager's T-Mobile micro sim-card into my VZW S4. The voice service worked flawlessly but there was neither 3G nor 4G connectivity. No idea why.

These questions are tricky. Work!? You have to define that word before you get your answer. Voice works and so as data IF you add APN manually (or if it comes automatically from T-Mo). Now by data you mean 2G(EDGE)? 3G(HSPA)? 4G(LTE)? It also depends on whether you are in an area where T-Mo has re-farmed 1900 HSPA. If you are in one of these areas then you got 3G for data. If not, 2G for you. No 4G anywhere for this phone on T-Mo.

Yes, it is %100 possible. It's involved...to the extent that it might not be for those who aren't willing to turn their phone into a PDA.
In this post I explain (condescendingly, because some guy was so sure it wasn't possible) that phones nowadays are capable of multiband...because it's just not cost effective for manufacturers to produce one phone for CDMA, then one for GSM, one for LTE, one for AWS bands, etc etc...you get the picture. If you look up the specs of the chips in the S4 (probably the same across the carriers) you'll see that it's a pentaband phone.
Short story long...I come from a time where there wasn't a "It's not possible"...my job bought me a VZ S4 which I plan on using with my Tmobile simcard...because I don't feel like carrying a Nexus 4 AND an S4...I'll post my progress in the forums for all to benefit from. Until then...
I only tested it for a few minutes.... but I did get lte on it but not sure about aws... on T-Mobile. Sorry I couldn't do a more extensive experiment.

Yes it is possible. And it is actually not that much work.
#1 be rooted
#2 put in tmobile sim and restart phone (cant change apn with vzw sim)
#3 change the apn settings for voice and data to t mobile (google it)
I have been using a verizon i545 S4 on tmobile for 3 weeks now. I have voice text and 4g h+ data.
The S4 is global, even if verizon tries to lock it down.

how are you getting 4g? I'm only getting 2g ;-; i'v ebeen asking everywhere but everybody seems to think it cant be done i guess? I just get ignored by the usually helpful community.
I am also on hyperdrive, have you looked at their coverage map? And what apn are you using tmobile has 3. Standard phones, smart phones, and I believe one for hipsters aka apple? The proper apn starts with fast. (Its 645 in the morning google it yourself)
Another thing to consider, you might be getting 4g or h what ever, t mobile is half as fast as verizon. I had to use xposed framework to turn on the proper icons.
The steps I posted are all I did, other than being on hyperdrivre rom. Try setting to gsm as your preffered network?
Im sorry people have ignored this and claim its impossible, the tmobile guy in store actually got his manager to come use my phone after I got it working in front of him in store. The store manager told the employee I must be some super hacker and this isnt possible for normal people. All i did was imout the apn and the sim nothing crazy.

Key Notes for Verizon Galaxy S4 (AWS LTE) on T-Mobile's Network

After happily using my 'old' S4 on T-Mobile with HSPA+ since having the Note 3 as my primary line, I was naturally excited to update the baseband and unlock Band 4 LTE. However I noticed some caveats which I've now solved which will undoubtedly confuse everyone at some point.
Assuming you've got the correct APN for T-Mo (fast.t-mobile.com) and naturally install the SIM, if your phone is on global you will happily see working LTE but not so fast (no pun intended). If you call or text, it fails. If you quick check your About -Status in settings and look under network it will say say Unknown and not T-Mobile. Why? Essentially you're in LTE data only mode because by default the baseband is looking to connect to CDMA for everything else in the CDMA/LTE marriage that is Verizon unique, which obviously won't work here. The assumption otherwise is that you will only need GSM if traveling internationally so it never looks for LTE with GSM.
The quick easy fix is to drop out of Global back to the GSM/UMTS setting, which will bring everything back, network restored to T-Mobile, but now it won't use LTE again, lame.
Luckily there is a fix. Use the PhoneInfo app or however you prefer to get to the Testing App. Under device information change the dropdown to LTE/GSM (auto PRL). Toggle airplane mode or restart. When it comes up you should be on LTE and quick check settings again you'll see T-Mobile, and everything will work. So far this seems to hold pretty well.
EDIT: Note: This works for TW Roms. I have not had success in CM10.2. In CM I've only gotten LTE data (wrongly labeled Verizon) and nothing else. Doesn't even pick up my phone number regardless of settings used.
Can you send me the link to the TW rom you are using for this? Thanks!

Use this app, hit Device Information, and change the dropdown to LTE/GSM (auto PRL). Given the simplicity not sure you need much more of a walk through than that. A video would require a bunch of editing to blot out IMEI and phone #s.

I am using this app and it is great. When it works, it would show T-Mobile as Net. Op instead of Unknown. Only issue I am seeing is that 4G LTE signal is not so great over where I am at and once in a while it would drop to H+ and then get back to LTE. During that cycle, the Net. Op would become Unknown again. Wish there was a way to fix this permanently like tricky the SMS app to send GSM or whatever it is causing Net Ops to be unknown.

Couple of things. Remember as I started with the baseband in i545 when on LTE really wants to use CDMA as the default so when it's searching it's not going to obtain GSM as instantaneous As it otherwise would. Don't see any specific way of that getting patched ever as we're going against the grain of how it's typically supposed to be used. If you are on a fringy area for it, you may be better off just leaving LTE off, H+ speeds are practically the same anyway. Tmo is only using 3-5mhz channels for band 4 as they use other channels too so for us it's not going to be superfast like Verizon on average anyway.
My phone is in Global mode, I have fast LTE internet and calls/texting works just fine. I am using a Verizon S4 with MJ7 and a T-Mobile simcard. No need to change anything except the APN and switch to Global.

yep, cant really install anything on MJ7 since there is no official root even, so yeah, bone stock. Fastest I have gotten the internet to be was 25-26mbps download which isnt great, but for a cellphone is more than enough lol
So maybe the MK7 bootloader fixes this SMS issue...

so using the 4.4 gummy rom you were able to connect to LTE / HSPA+ networks easily? And SMS / MMS worked just fine? Upon trying with the MJ7 update, non-rooted, I could only connect to Edge services under the GSM profile. Using global would barely warrant the HSPA band.

Are you actually getting "LTE" or reframed 4G?
please school me how to change apn.
well let me give you a trick, flash an i9505 rom which you can find them here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/i9505-develop
then flash any verizon kernel (because if you just flash an at&t or t-mob rom it wont reboot it will say triangle and not authorized verizon software)
dont forget to update your baseband to lastest then you can enjoy LTE (and fast) without any problems.
if you get and prop. issues while flashing international roms just change the "updater-script" first line to :
assert(getprop("ro.product.device") == "jfltevzw" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "jfltevzw"
then you can flash anything you want.
Here is how I did it
Here is how I did it, but needs some minor updates since then. Please let me know if anyone tries it and is happy with the result.

Verizon I-545 with T-mobile sim Q&A

I know this has been addressed a few times, but with the new radio's and T-mobile running on LTE bands I feel it can be addressed again.
I have been running a T-Mobile sim in my Verizon S4 for about 9 months now having 90% functionality of T-Mobile apps and after 4.3 using LTE with a few MMS hiccups that seem to have been ironed out.I have ran just about every ROM available here on XDA, and even attempted to write my own Rom a couple times with limited success. And every ROM I have ran was written for Verizon, I just changed the APN settings, and sometimes had to flash some other items to get them working 100%.
I have a few things I am working on trying to "fix" such as Hotspot and a few T-Mobile only apps. I have convinced my phone it is a SGH-M919 changing a lot of info in the build prop, which allows me to use the T-Mobile TV app. But being a trial and error kinda guy I don't know how much of my editing was necessary, or if I actually needed to change more to allow me to use the hot-spot app. I have bricked my phone to many times to count trying out Radio's and changing setting in the ROMs trying to make my I545 more a T-Mobile phone than a Verizon phone.
I have seen alot of "ports" such as the 4.4.2 GE that I am currently running ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2643031 ). The first release I had amazing signal and no connection issues. But after the DEV (Danvdh) plucked away at it making it work better for Verizon and fixing a lot of Verizon data issues has started to have a couple signal issues here and there. Nothing that I would say broke the connection but definitely slowed a few things for me down.
Same for the INT build ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2552605 ) from jrkruze it works amazing then started to slowly after updates not work as well as it did from his first release. The ROM got better but my "connection" got worse.
So on to my question:
What is being changed in the ROMs that make them better for Verizon? I know that I am part of a small majority of people here running a SIM and a network that it was never supposed to run on, but it does work and I would like to make it work as best as it can. I know I can go back and use the older versions of the ROMs but I like the other changes and I like being able to update.

The AWS spectrum was unlocked for the i545 a few updates ago. Since TMobile LTE runs on the AWS band, a Verizon S4/i545 is capable of running TMobile LTE
AWS was unlocked with the MJ7 modem.

I rooted my Verizon Galaxy S4 and then changed APN settings for it to work on T-mobile. Please assume I know nothing about these processes (which is true, i just can follow precise directions) and if possible provide step-by-step instructions.

I have done some research and came across people who said the phone should not work, people who said that some additional modules need to be installed in order for it to work, and other people who said all i have to do is change APN. I chose the third option as it required the least effort and was easily reversible ( i think). After changing the APN settings this Sunday ( 3 days ago), the phone makes call on Tmobile network, has 4G LTE and lower speed internet, sends/accept SMS (not MMS).

Honestly, I'm surprised that it works! As for the MMS problem- verify the settings: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc and it should work, since everything else works....
that is exactly what i have and MMS is not working. I'm not really concerned about the MMS, just trying to figure out how to get lollipop.
thanks

To get Lollipop when it comes out for our Phone. Whenever it does, just use your computer and flash the lollipop TAR using ODIN. Or you could just download the OTA.zip and sideboard it from the stock recovery. Just come back to this site after Lollipop comes out and there will be a guide.
Edit: wait... if all you changed was APNs then you can still take the update through settings.

To let you know, a while back someone posted a guide in the general on how to enable TMobile AWS on our phone.

Verizon

Just want to confirm that the Moto G Power works on Verizon in the USA. I see it has been rooted and such so this looks like my new phone to replace my trusty Shamu.
Thank you,
fasthair
Edit: I contacted Verizon via Twitter and they confirmed it will work on their network. C&P their reply...I appreciate the prompt response. Thanks for clarifying this information for me. I reviewed information internally and the Moto G Power XT2041 is compatible with our network. Does this help answer your question?

I recently purchased this phone unlocked through best buy. How/where can I download Verizon firmware to utilize wifi calling? Google, Verizon and Motorola have ran me on circles trying to solve this.
Bestbuy sells both the unlocked version and the Verizon version. Obviously the Verizon version would work with wifi calling, but what about the unlocked version?

I have the unlocked version and it doesn't come with Wi-Fi calling. It runs only the android 10 software and Google apps for the messages and phone. I found a setting for wifi messages (though I've been having trouble sending and receiving) but no setting in the phone app or the device settings.
I'm hoping if I can find the Verizon firmware to download and enable wifi calling.

Check under the advanced settings in the mobile network settings. If it's not there, then Verizon might be blocking it. Cricket does the same thing, but they'll sometimes enable it for you if you ask nicely.
I have the unlocked version and it works on mine, but I have a Verizon MNVO sim.
I'm using Visible which is a Verizon mvno and wifi calling works (to my surprise actually)

I have checked under those settings and there is nothing listed as Wi-Fi calling. On VPN and Private DNA.
Would you be able to give a screen shot or write out what you click on to see where out phones differ? Baffling why my phone doesn't not have that option and Verizon has been no help in figuring it out.
I bought a g power phone for my son from Google fi, but activated it on Verizon. It works on verizon's network with a verizon sim. I havent been able to make wifi calling work, any suggestions? Looked in advanced setting under mobile connections no wifi calling choices. Any help would be greatly appreciated
I do not have this phone but i used unlocked phones (3 different ones) on Verizon. Currently a razer 2 on Verizon. If you do not buy a carrier locked phone from them you can not have wifi calling. That is one perk of buying the phone from them. They will let you have volte but thats about it. , No visual voicemail either.
I understand this might be a dumb question, but why is WiFi calling so important? I would have thought most people would use Hangouts, Zoom, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, or Duo. Any of those effectively provide WiFi calling.

This is for a older person who is not tech savvy. The person just wants to make calls and not have to setup any of those other apps, too complicated.

WiFi calling is very handy if you use your phone in places where you might not have reliable cell coverage but do have WiFi (e.g., a basement, etc.). I've never tried it, but that might include an international location where you can't use cell but have access to WiFi.
My carrier is Sprint, and I can verify that the WiFi calling function is present under Settings, Network & Internet, Mobile Network, Advanced, and nestled under "Calling"

I'm in the process to switch to visible. Did you just put the sim and good to go? Or you need to add some extra APN to work?

On the G Power, yes , for whatever reason it works right away without messing with apns. Literally everything works. Other phones though you do have to add apns and mess about.

Do you think I need to factory reset my phone and then insert the new visible sim card? I currently I'm using at&t. Or doesn't matter. Did you place the visible sim on a brand new phone or switch from a previous carrier?

It was in a brand new phone yes, but no I don't think it matters. Should be good to go. If anything just restart the phone.
It's also my understanding that Verizon does not allow any Advanced Calling features on a carrier unlocked phone. With my last phone, however (Z4), I was able to flash the VZW image to enable those features on my unlocked phone: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...ng-and-root-with-xt1980-3-on-verizon.3994025/
I just tried a similar process with the Moto G Power. I have a XT2041-4, which I have bootloader unlocked. I then downloaded the VZW rom from lolinet: https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/sofia/official/VZW/
and patched the boot.img using Magisk. I then followed this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/moto-g-power-flashing-guide.4159301/
to flash the VZW image (XT2041-7) onto my XT2041-4 (including the patched boot.img). Fingers crossed.... And bootloop. So I recovered to RETUS via LMSA. But I haven't given up hope yet. Maybe someone else can chime in.
Got it working...
HD and WiFi Voice and Video Calling on XT2041-4 with Verizon
Prerequisites: You must bootloader unlock your XT2041-4. https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a As far as I'm aware, this only applies to XT2041-4 on Verizon Wireless. To be clear, the XT2041-4...
