[Q] How to get headphones to work? - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My headphones don't work. The bundled noice canceling headphones do work, but any of my regular headphones don't. I've tried to switch the setting to "other device" from the Noice cancel.../Microphone/Other setting, turningn the phone off etc. They worked a couple times yesterday, but today, nothing happens.
Anyone else got this? How to fix it?

Sony has proprietary technology on this, it only works with the included earphones (from what I heard), but don't worry I am sure someone will find a modification to allow it to work with ALL earphones sooner or later, this is XDA after all.

What? All my headphones work just fine, including nc, cheap chinese, and fancy panasonic ones
Sent from my D6503 using Tapatalk 2

It would be very stupid not to allow other headphones.
Anyone got any ideas?

Check if jack is clear and nice, i had a problem that none of headphones worked, with help of a toothpick i pulled out a piece of i dunno how to call it in english, cloth i guess, it was stuck inside and blocked connection

Will try. Nothing there. Did a factory reset and nothing changed. This is total bull****. Now I have to take it to a service center?

LOL!

All kinds of headphones and Aux cables are working fine for me. 3.5 mm jack is not Sony's standard rather a universal one and they would be stupid to do that. try switching noise cancellation off and try or else service centre is your best bet.

Have you tried headphones that have a mic? With 4-pins? Because I just now tried after 2 factory resets and 'regular' headphones do work, but the 4-pin mic headset doesn't.

I havent tried 4 pin ones but i will give it a go today, have you tried switching NC off and then using the other headphones. may be its something to do with NC only being compatible with Sony headphones??

I tried from sound settings. Set device to 'other'. No luck.
This started when I played around with the two headphone sets. Tried to determine the quality of the NC ones. They both worked then, but it was inconsistent with the 4-pinned ones. Then the phone stopped recognizing it.
And would really appreciate if you could try some 4 pin ones!

Did you try it?
I guess my options are to try the headphones to another Z2 or try to find other 4-pin headphones. I've already contacted Amazon, and they're willing to send me a new device. Nice service.

@SuperMarioGalaxy Yeah I just tried another pair and it works fine.

Update: I tried some other 4 pin headsets, the other wasn't supported (notification came up), the other produced sound but really quiet. They were both for Nokia, which has different standards I think.
I still see this as a definite fault with the phone as the headphones worked just fine at first and they work with other devices.

[Q] Earphones sound like being under water?

I've got this strange thing. When I plug the samsung earphones (or any other with a mic, tested 3 of them) my sound sounds like i'm under water (music, radio app, fm radio) . When I use normal earphones the sound is good. Is anyone else experiencing this aswell? And does anyone know what is causing it and how to fix it?
I tried the same on my Lenovo business laptop and experience the same problems (so it's not a device thing). Also, when I pull out the plug a little bit the sound is perfectly fine but the plug won't hold like that in my pocket
Any help here?

This used to happen to me with my sgs1. Because the sgs1 is wired differently to iPhone etc.
That was changed for sgs2.
If you are sure youre not using older sgs1 earphones then my guess is they are faulty or you got the wrong set with your sgs2.

either you are using an incompatible headset with mic, or your wire in the mic is damaged, if the support wire in a headset is cut then it will happen.

Well on any headset with a mic. You have 3 bands on the 3.5mm jack. 1 for the left, 1 for the right headphone and 1 band for the mic. The order of these 3 bands does vary hence your loss in sound. Try a few different headsets to find the one that works perfectly for you.
I hope that helped you!

Usually the mic band is in the middle. No clue what its on the SG1 and SG2. The sound sounds like it is in the distance. Which means that the circuit is not complete. Underwater sounds sound way are way clearer than listening to them normally (less resistance)

Bass is pretty good, use equalizer from market. Built in presets are ok too.

I usually run them both at the same time. HS3000 for music, HS5000 for phone calls. You just gotta make sure that you set the HS3000 to not automatically connect as hands free, otherwise answering phone calls could be tricky.

With the included earphones, the sound quality is at least as good if not better because of the built in eq presets.
Can anyone confirm that the HS3000 will still function while being charged?

Answering problem after music listening
Hi all!
I have HS3000 and ZTE Blade (CM 7.2).
Everything is ok except call answering after music listening.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Connect headset to smartphone.
2. Turn on music listening. It should come from headset.
3. Someone call you meanwhile music listening.
4. Answer the call.
5. Caller voice comes from smartphone regardless connected bluetooth.
The only fix is turn off bluethooth button off and on again afterwards sound comes from headset.
Does anyone faced with this problem and/or know how to fix it?

This is normal behaviour.
Your headphone is not connected in headset-mode but in audio-mode.
So when a call comes in , for the phone there is NO HEADSET CONNECTED.
I dont thinks so. I had Sony Ericsson HBH DS-220 and Nokia BH-214. Both of them worked properly and all calls swithed to headset even if I had listened music.
Moreover HS3000 work properly in second and all next calls in case music listening.

This does not explain why SE and Nokia work perfectly in all cases.
And why HS3000 doesn't connect in both modes at the same time if smartphone indicates that headset BT profile is turned on?

Audio jack issue

Hey,
So I got a new pair of headphones today (Shure Se215's) and I have a major issue with them connecting to my Galaxy sII.
The headphones work perfectly in other devices and I have never had any trouble with other headphones in my own phone.
However with these new headphones the jack seems dodgy. It only gives full sound (not switching between mono and stereo, just tinny as ****) when on the right angle. So right now I cant use them together without constantly holding the cable in the right position.
One similar thing which I have noticed is that connecting an AUX cable has always been dodgy too. The phone will not pick up that it is plugged into an aux cable (Car or home stereos) until I wiggle and jam it in and even then it takes a few seconds if it works at all.
Any help would be great! I have done a lot of searching on here and around the web and haven't found any issues quite the same as mine.
I'm not scared to open up the phone and play with hardware if people think it is necessary.
Cheers

Sony makes a really nice set of headphones with the mic, If any headset works as stated above, that would be a pair I would consider. Walmart has them and also office depot, and usually theres like 3 or 4 models about 5 - 10 bucks apart.
There's been a few times i was traveling or something and needed a pair quick or the kids lost my girl's pairs, and a quick trip to walgreens and $15 got a nice set of stereo ear plugs and I know some of them have the mic and headset controls that will work with the headset hook mod.
Don't laugh but try Big Lots if you have 1 near you. The last time I was in the 1 near me they had a ton of ear buds & over ear headphones real cheap.

[Q] Is the S2 destroying headphones?

OK. So I have looked ALL over the forums and interwebs and I haven't found anything that relates to the problem i'm having!
I have had my S2 for almost 2 years and it has never failed me. Let's say about a year ago I was using my official samsung headphones when the right side stopped working. Considering that it could be the phone's problem I used the headphones in other devices (inclusing pc) and realised that the headphones had the same problem, right side was dead.
So, I tried my sister's headphones (official), worked great for about a week, then the same happened. Right headphoned died!
Then I bought some similar headphones, worked great for 2 days, then....caput! Right side dies!!!
I have tried settings, looking inside audio jack, fiddle around with headphone cable. I HAVE NO CLUE!
Is anyone finding this a problem? Has it happened to anyone else? Is this a common problem with the S2?
I am running Android Jellybean 4.1.2.
I am not rooted and I don't want to take my phone apart. I'm starting to think the S2 is eating away at headphones in general, only the right side.
Thanks in advance!
I've used the stock earphones and a better quality Sony pair....and I'm also using a mod that significantly increases overall volume and bass etc........and so far, my earphones seem to be surviving......when you were using these earphones, did you notice any significant difference in the sound balance between left and right?
Edit......
Just a question......
With the stock earphones, you have the main (single) cable between the plug and the mic.....and then from the mic, you have a short left cable and a long right cable......were the other earphones you used of the same design, or were they the more traditional type where the left and right cables are the same length?

Nope! Sound quality was perfect every time. Settings were set to stereo and never had to change the equaliser. All earphones would work flawlessly in any music player, video player, youtube...etc. Then quite randomly they would lose sound in the right earphone and never work again on that side in any device. That's 4 sets of headphones I have gone through that have all broken in the same way. I haven't touched a damned thing!
Do you have your earphones in your pocket? Maybe the cable just breaks. Had this a couple of times.

The stock earphones cost maybe $2 to manufacture. I think that might have a lot more to do with it than the phone itself.

Yes. That is a factor I have taken into account. But the headphones have always been wrapped neatly and never bent. It's strange how it only seems to lose audio on the RIGHT side earphone though.

Have used earphones of great quality, costing much more than that. And the same thing has happened.
Are u using the headphones for a lot of things? ( I mean not just your phone) If that is the case, try using the headphones ONLY with your phone and laptop, i've had some problems before like this when i plugged my headphones to my friend's phone and those mini tv things on the bus.

ALL headphones I had were only ever used for the phone! I have great headphones for laptop so the phone ones were never needed.
Then there may indeed be a problem with your phone, maybe it short-circuits or something, you can try s2 nuke from hawkerpaul: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2100558
If this doesn't solve the problem,it's probably hardware and there is nothing you can do, give it to a samsung center.
Don't wait anymore
After going through the OP and ALL the replies, I just want to second the opinion that it is indeed a hardware problem specific to your device only.. So try not to put the fifth pair of headphones in, just visit your nearest Samsung service centre and I am sure they will know how to go about your problem..
