Couple questions about power button and build quality. - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I picked up my Z2 on Saturday, love some stuff about the phone a ton, just have a couple of nitpicks.
There's some "gap" issues in that it's not uniform all the way around, it seems to be purely cosmetic and doesn't affect the waterproof aspect of the phone.
The power button is shockingly small, and it feels pretty awful to press, there is no feedback at all. It's a spongy, mushy, mess.
The volume rocker is incredibly loose, I can deal.
Mine didn't come with the neat noise cancelling headphones

The power button is very firm but I have found after some use the feedback improves a lot. It is still less than z1 though

Good to know feedback may improve. I never used the z1 myself. Is it essentially the same button?
Sent from my D6503 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

No, same design but z1 was more of a pronounced button with easier feedback, however it did feel loose and Could be rattled. The z2 is more firm and to press it, you have to want to. Like I said, it feels better after some use and now I'd say overall is better than z1.

I am running Serendipity 9.3 with it's built in kernal and have no problems talking and no problems with speaker phone either. Voice is clear.

Are you sure? The "Top/Headphone Jack" picture has the hole near the edge towards the black front casing. But on my phone it's towards the edge near the battery cover.

Maybe just me, but it feels much more "well-built".
The battery back door is much harder and stiffer than the flimsy original black one.
Also the batter back door is smooth, I personally like the feel better when compared to the textured original battery door.

Yes it is glossy and looks really nice in the sun
Oh sorry, my bad. That was just my way of testing the power button without turning off the screen haha.
No the power button and volume keys don't stick at all.
EDIT: Oh I see what you mean. You mean the part when I test the volume button, a menu pops up in the back right?
That is because I use the AudioManager app and when I press the volume buttons, a menu pops up that asks me if I want to change sound profile
It is not the power menu.

Loose power button?

So has anyone noticed a loose power button on their s3? The bottom of the button has a pretty good wiggle to it. It clicks just fine when you press it. Any thoughts on this? Is this normal for Samsung phones? Thanks!

No, the entire button is tight
Well so far it points to maybe being normal. I mean it works and it doesnt stick or anything. So I guess I am torn to bring it in or not. Either way I have 20 or so more days to bring it in if I see fit.
Still interested if this is how Samsung wanted it or maybe just a bad unit.
Mines pretty loose as well, but it works fine. On sprints version

Thinking on Friday I will pop down to my local ATT corp store and compare the button to the floor model.
Anyone else planning on doing a return due to this issue?
Mine is good and tight, AT&T Pebble Blue. I did have a white one before that was loose and very clicky. Haven't felt that on either of the 3 blue versions I have tried. Maybe it's related to color?
Those who have a loose button, is your phone white?
Yes mine is white. It clicks when ya press it and it works just fine. Its just got a little wiggle to it! I'm gonna bring it in to have ATT take a look at it. See what they think. I bet is they will open another one to see if its the same way. I was reading online on another set of forums that one store had opened 4-5 boxes and they all had some wiggle room to them. Both blue and white models. I will see if I can find it again and link it.
My S3 power button is also kinda loose but it works without issues. I also noticed that it is more flush with phone compared to the volume rocker. It has a slightly more 'mushy' than the volume button.
I believe the thread you are talking about is below, and I was the one who asked for many units to be checked lol
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1714031
The button feels firm when pressed, but is just not as tight as volume rocker...
Given the amount of people that have it, it seems more or less 'acceptable' and I don't know how stores will change each 'loose/mushy' one...

Yeah. When I press towards the top/bottom of the button, it feels more mushy but center has a better/firmer click. hmmm... similar?

Anything bad with this phone?

I am considering buying this. With a hefty price tag of 820 dollars here in Sweden, I have to ask if there's anything bad with this phone that might cause you to rethink?
It is mostly positive mate, the only bad things I can say is that the power button and volume rockers are a tad flimsy. And that is nit picking. Best phone on the market easily.
Flimsy as in unreliable at times or flimsy as in will break completely after a while?

Flimsy as in cheaply made, breakable. But not a big issue and by no means a dealbreaker!
It's not as cheaply made as the power button of the Nexus One, is it?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
The biggest problem for me is how things unload so quickly/easily in the background which makes multitasking much more of a pain than the S2 was.
The only complaint that I have with this phone is the buttons are a little flimsy. But all in all the phone is great and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a top of the line smart phone!
Why you all complaining about the buttons? I find nothing wrong with them exept the little "lag" with the home button
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I have no problems with the buttons or with lag or redraw.
Theshawty I remember you from the gnex forums so I have no doubt you will have your phone flashed with something or other so you don't need to worry about any software issues, redraw is easily fixed by changing oom priorities in service.jar, easy work for a nexus veteran! XD

AMOLED screen is the main issue on S3. Losing most of the details in dark scenes when watching video. Other than that, is perfect phone.

- Poor memory management force home screen to redraw when exiting heavy apps. Should be solvable by sw or maybe 1 GB is too low (intl. quad version).
- Unusable in direct sunlight, too low brightness. Not solvable.
- Auto brightness is too aggressive and not smooth. Solvable via sw at the expense of battery life.
Every other aspect of the phone is fantastic. Super stable and smooth. Great job from Sammy making a very usable phone out of the box.

i love the phone.so dont just fokus on all the negative. no phone is totaly perfect for all.
my problems with it. is not mush.
no lanyard hole. ? i have allways used that. and has saved my phones alot in the past.
and i get a strange spoken code when pinching the homescren. wery wierd.
and when playing vertical games. (isent all ? ) i often hit the tuch bottens.
and i cant turn of the shutter sound. for camera.
but im new. and a noob. so i dont root and such. (dont even know what it is hehe)
This phone is pretty awesome. It's the first time is used a manufacturer UI (touchwiz nature UX) that I feel actually feel makes the phone more usable and functionable than stock android. Sure, the HTC one x might have a slightly better screen, but overall this phone is awesome.

I remember you from nexus forums.
I sold my nexus last week and aren't planning on looking back. Sure the nexus gets faster software updates but this has better battery life, more storage, and a better camera. Screen is also slightly larger.
The only other thing, apart from the updates, I prefer the capacitive home button on the nexus. The mechanical home button is not too great, was stiff at first but now it's a bit better worn in and I'm getting used to it. It's not a deal breaker, let's put it that way.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
What's really bad about this phone for me is that I can't leave it alone. I love modding it and shooting pics and videos with it. Haven't experienced any issues with the buttons, but that could be because it's rooted and I use touch recovery and quick boot. It's been over one month since I last had to hold in the three buttons to get the phone into recovery/bootloader mode.
My main problems is:
- The redraw issue... No much of a problem anyway.
- Feels like the phone is worth 10$. To much cheap plastic.
- Screen is a bit "dirty" when showing white's and greys (PENTILE AMOLED issue)
- Agree with the flimsy power/volume buttons.
- Backcover makes some noise when pressed. Not 100% seal with phone.
Think im happy with the phone. Only had it for a couple of weeks. It's superfast and stable.
Isn't the size of the phone an issue?
I ordered a SIII yesterday, and what worries me is the size. I'm used to have my phone in the front pocket of my jeans and I'm worried that it won't fit there, at least while driving my car.
Where do you all carry your phones?
Pebble blue is pebble purple.
It is still laggy till jellybean comes out.
Touchwiz.
Feels empty at the back and very slippery may want to get a case.
Am mm that's it the rest is fine.

Yes!! And also the frame on my phone is cracked near the Headphone jack, Have no Idea how that happened though, It has always been inside a Silicone case and i have never ever dropped it or anything...
I've got a creaky power button.
I also have a creek sound when pushing down on the back of the phone opposite the volume rocker without the back cover on.
I am normally very... VERY picky when it comes to phone... this is my second s3 and to be quite honest I can't be bothered to change it again.
Every Samsung phone I have had there has been a problem with it.
If I take the back cover off and keep pushing it the sound goes away.. but it comes back sooner or later.
But I suggest you get a replacement because the cheap sound the volume rocker makes it very annoying.

Is the Xperia ZU comfortable to use?

Yes or No and why. I'm on the fence right now and really wanna know what it's like walking, sitting down and operating a huge phone.
If you can operate a Note 2 you can operate this phone. It is a bit hard to use with one hand but you can with some getting used to it
I would trade 1 handed use for screen any day. How often are you stuck with just 1 hand to do everything? 3% of the time maybe?
I am very comfortable using the phone. I thought size might be a factor but it's not. It is a pleasure to use.
I would imagine using it as a small tablet is comfortable, but are you guys using it as a phone by itself? As in holding it up to your head? Or do you pair a bluetooth device to make calls?

Yes, I use it as a phone holding it to my head. I bought a bluetooth device thinking I would use that as a handset but it remains unused.
Are there any issues with the other side hearing you? While on my note 2, if I'm not talking in normal/loud voice, the other person may complain they can't hear me very well (or maybe it's just this particular restaurant in specific). Since the XZU is so long, it'll go WAY past where your mouth is.

No complaints as of yet.
I don't have the largest hands and I can type in landscape with very little effort. It is hefty, but since it's so slim, you don't really notice. I've made a few phone calls and I'll admit, it looks strange, but doesn't feel unnatural.

No issue for me, if still comfortable for me.
I can make calls with it no problem. No need for a bluetooth device at all unless you want one.
My biggest concern actually is using the phone as a music player. The audio jack is on thw side so it might be too tight on the pants. And while driving, it might be impossible to switch between tracks with one hand lol
I wish android implemented swipe gestures on the screen to wakeup. Its almost effortless and is an elegant solution especially if your phone is idle on a table top

Coming from iPhone 5, I need some adjustment to typing on this device. However, browsing websites and reading articles from Current and Buzzfeed is great, it has that book-reading feel to it. In fact, the big ass screen makes it a pleasure.
It's easy to hold with one hand but making phone calls made me feel awkward, and a little bit embarassed.
I feel like I made the right choice to return to android with this device. I wish it has tablet capacity battery though.

The audio jack on the side is ridiculous - sony did this on XSP too (sony seems to be good at spoiling decent devices ), especially on a "smartphone" this big :silly:
I'm also getting an XZU in couple of weeks, and if using audio cable while the phone is in my pocket proved impossible, I think the workaround is using the wireless bluetooth.. Sounds like it defeat the purpose of a fully-waterproofed audio jack, but some compromise must be made, huh
First look I worry about the size, now I love the size. Inside my pocket no problem for walk, sit and run. I put my note 2 and zu together with my jean pocket or short paint is ok. No doubt.
One hand operate no problem for me. Because I m the big hand.
When incoming call also no problem, answer without bluetooth. Now I won't worry the size only how to root my device.
One more think is this device suitable for male better than female. When my wife hold it look like holding a M16.

I found the Note 2 too awkward to use so I sent it back. If I had issues with that would this device be even worse?

It was partly the size but more just its general handling, reaching across the screen even though I tried clustering stuff on one side of it. I had a Galaxy Note sometime prior & I got on with that reasonable well & though the Note 2 was bigger of screen I still thought I would be OK with it.
