[Q] Using the DK39 magnetic charger with the sony case? - Xperia Z2 Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok really stupid question, i have my z2, i have the official sony case and also the official sony dk39 magnetic charger, the charger and case are both advertised as you can charge your tablet even with the case on.
i dont know if i am missing something, but i am finding it hard to work out how exactly i do this lol
i have tried with the removable part that comes with the charger both off and on, with it off the tablet and case just fall out, with the removable part attached the tablet and case are too thick to fit in?
I am having to practically make sure that the covers of the case are folded and hanging in a certain position so that i can just sit the tablet on the charger (as if the case wasn't on), so that only the tablet is sliding into the dock.
im not sure if this is how its supposed to be, but the way i read the advertisement for both, i got the impression that the tablet with the case closed would be able to slot into the charger and it would still charge through the case?
Or have i just been really stupid and i am trying to do something thats impossible, im just confused by all the reviews that say you can use this sony case with the charger?
Thanks
James

That's the way.
And the cover can be hung/dressed in different ways... the whole case is like a crazy origami.
I use the magnetic flap to hold it, so when it is in the dock, the case is in an upside down "Y" shape.

Has anyone tried the common Chinese after-market versions of the DK39? I have one that really mitigates (meaning, bad) the power flow. Using Battery Monitor, the amperage is about half from the same transformer going through the pseudo-DK39 vs. directly to the USB port. Visually, this stand is identifiable by not having the little back support to keep the tablet upright.
I see another unit I'm tempted to buy that does have that small backplate. That's the one I'm curious about. 1) does it allow positioning of the Z2T in the cradle with a thin TPC case? 2) does it rival the USB port in power delivery?

That removable part needs to be attached.
Tablet cover needs to be opened for charging the tablet. So you do not need to remove the cover - but you need to open it.
Just look at the case, look at the contacts. Contacts need to make contact with the charging pins of the DK39; that's why they're called that way.

This is no inductive charger (as seen with electric toothbrushes), the charger needs to be in direct touch with the charging contacts at the Z2's bottom. If you punch two additional holes in the case, it might work. If you are not willing to do this: Open the case, charge.
And enjoy far shorter charging times if using a better power adapter than Sony's - e. g. Samsungs 2 A chargers (the ones provided with S4, S5, etc.).

Any reason ?
Just because it's from China ? - There are SO many real great products from China - I don't see any sense in comdemning a product just because of it's origin.
So please provide a REASON - or remove your post.

I am not talking about original Chinese products, but replicas, copies of products from big brands; these are usually terribly inferior quality wise. If this charging dock is called dk39 but it's not made by Sony, then it's a fake. It may somewhat function, but it's still a fake.

Case and charger
Hi,
I have both the Sony case the the magnetic charger.
On the charger, insert the "loose" part into the base of the charger and simply fold the cover back. They work seamlessly and allow you to charge without removing the case.

Sony Charging Dock

Looks like Sony once again bring out a charging dock tailored for the new flag ship named DK36
http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/products/accessories/magnetic-charging-dock-dk36/
I wonder if we removed the cable from the DK31 dock it will fit the magnetic ports on the Z2?
This is the first design flaw I've spotted with the Z2. The dock actually blocks a little part of the screen. The dock makes it a very good mini television and this kind of ruins it. Hope this isn't the case and this isn't the final product.
I emailed Sony about the dock, they say that the z1 dock will not work on the z2. I assume they mean that the pins won't align

It seems the thickness of two phone is different that why the z1 dock will not work on the z2.
I found some magnetic chargers sold on line are compatible with Z1, Z1C and Z2.

I don't see that problem at all. Right now, My Z2 is sitting in the charging dock and the lip is a fraction below the margin of the bezel leaving the entire screen visable.

Generic Dock from Amazon
I bought this generic one from Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00JE81AJE
Works perfectly and even has a different width receiver for when you fit a case on to the Z2 and it's half the price. Recommended :good:
I've sent mine back to Amazon, the dock charger only works when plugged into the wall socket, it doesn't charge the phone (or provide any connection whatsoever) when plugged into a USB port. Maybe it's obvious for everyone else, but it wasn't for me.
Also, this 30 euro accessory is just a small piece of plastic, you don't even get a USB cable in the package. Sony is charging way too much for this.
I'm now hoping for a third-party dock that will be able to connect and charge via USB.
I can't use either of my cases with the dock. So had to order the official Sony case (through I hate cases like that). Gutted that I can't use a thin gel case on it, in the dock!

Does the SCR10 case fit the dock? I know it should because they are both officially from Sony, but it seems a bit weird to fit it.
I have the SCR10 and wondering to buy the DK36, but I don't want it if I have to take of the cover.

Yup. It does fit without problems.
Are there any 3rd party cases that fit? I really hate cases like the official Sony one, but have ordered it purely to protect the device, even though I hate the style. Every gel case I have purchased from eBay or Amazon does not fit...

This is exactly the same with the dock from the Xperia Z - completely overpriced and they don't advertise that it must use a high-current charger, 500mA from a USB port won't work.
At least they should include a power adapter + cable. The dock has to contain about $1 worth of materials, if even that.

Thought it would be nice to post here as well. Not sure if you're aware of this: Anyone thinking about cases and the dock, it has a removable part that, when removed, lets you insert the phone with many kinds of cases.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-DK36-Charging-Dock-Smartphone/dp/B00HWUQEZQ/ref=pd_cp_computers_0
Here you can see the "seamline" which is the removable part. It is also stated in the description. Just to let you know in case you didn't already.

I can assure you it does not go into the dock if you wanted that. And there are full length cables that do the same thing (at least I think the magnetic charging cables fit with a case), saves the hassle of an adapter. If you can justify getting it, then nice find mate.

Idea for Qi Charging Case

The magnetic charging docks are not bad. Also, the qi charging case from Sony is pretty nice. However, the best case would be a plastic case with a Qi wireless coil inside with a lead that wraps around and fits over the magnetic contact. Qi chargers like the Tylt work really well and they are so handy at home and in the car. I wear a holster so the flip cover is not necessary.

I know, that's why I asked if maybe there are some prototype floating around
I did not mean to infer that I had one of the Sony Qi charging cases. I may have purchased one had they been available. I prefer the a slim fitting tpu or hybrid case. However, none that I have found fit correctly. Sony's magnetic charging docks are great and work fast, but one has to remove his case to use them. Yet no one makes a good case that covers up the SIM/Micro USB cover and exposes the magnetic charging area. This is totally stupid. One only seldomly changes his SIM and needs access to the micro usb port, but one always needs to charge.
If Sony is not going to add a Qi charger in the phone, they should at least make some good folio and slim fit cases at a sub $50 price that can be left on while charging using the magnetic dock.
Also, charging with a car dock is a pain without Qi charging using the Z2. The buttons are all in the wrong place also and interfere with the sides of both my car docks.
It's a real shame that Sony has not made a better attempt at charging options combined with cases. The Sony Z2 is a great phone. Even better yet woukd be a removeable battery. This is the only feature that keeps me going back to Samsung.

I have been thinking about trying this. I have dismantled a magnetic charger and there are only 2 wires in there. Positive and negative. Is there anything stopping me buying a universal micro usb qi adapter and soldering the positive and negative from that onto the positive and negative of the magnetic charger and hiding it all inside a case?
That's an interesting Idea. I've thought of the same thing, though I wanted to connect to the magnetic charger contact rather than the micro USB port. I'd like to make a case with a Qi charger and FM radio antenna built in. It wouldn't take up that much space.
I hope someone at Sony is watching this thread.

I for one actually feel a bit cheated.
The did announce Qi charging capability through a case and plate and while I had to choose between the S5/M8/Z2, this was one of the element that I considered...
Now all of a sudden they decide to cancel...
Though I would much prefer a Qi charger, the magnetic chargers can be useful. I bought some cheap magnetic charging cables and cut some of the plastic off them so they would work with my phone's case on. The magnets are weak and it s a pain to get them attached but of charges quite fast.
I was hoping that the Z3 would come out of the gate with wireless charging. In a statement made a few months back, they stated they would have Qi charging by the end of this year.
Hopefully the Z4 will have it. They also need to put 32 GB of internal storage in their phones.
Sent from my D6503 using XDA Free mobile app
If someone made a QI charging case, I'd be willing to pay for it, as long as it looked good enough!
might be worth testing out to see if the WCR14 connector and charging type works on a Z2. i can see the connector alone makes the phone look much bigger.
Why sony decided to put a magnetic charge on the side is beyond me.
Did anybody get any where with this? I am thinking about getting one of the coils on ebay for the samsungs and modifying it, they look very slimline as I suppose they are design to fit behind the battery cover?
I am planning to have it sit inside a TPU case I have. The difficult part will be the magnetic part / Soldering....etc

Wireless Charging Back Cover

For wireless charging how does this exactly work?
It works by induction. You need a special charging station (read: a square box that is resting on your nightstand from now on), where you can put your phone on. You don't have to fiddle with plugs.
The charging station works with a standard USB connection and for your phone you need the above mentioned back cover, with is a complete replacement for the existing backplate. The special back cover contains all the electronics and contact pins to connect with the phones battery.
looks like it make the phone super thick!!! Plus cant use with any cases

Of course, they have to place the coil somewhere, it's just a sacrifice you have to make for having the convenience. Also most flexable rubber/silicone cases do work because they stretch (I just prefer to go without them for the sake of ruining the design of the phone).
It should be arriving here by end of week and I'll be sure to take a few pics for you guys.
FYI, I have purchased a wireless charging back for every single Samsung device I have ever owned so I have plenty of experience (S3, S4, Note 3, and currently S5)
I was running the wireless charging back on my LG G3 so I have some experience as well. That back only added 1 millimeter to the thickness...I measured it. Just better design. I have the alpha and I'm currently testing next to the iPhone 6. Liking both phones alot. Need to test battery life

The most disappointing thing about the wireless charging back cover, other than its extra thickness which makes it less flush, is on the standard cover, the SAMSUNG logo is shiny and embossed, giving the same effect as the metallic edging. On the wireless charging cover, its matte and flat like a cheap tacky plastic print. Not at all in-keeping with the quality of the rest of the phone.

Hmm this is quite strange, usually Samsung does not cheap out on those wireless charging back covers and try to make it as identical to original as possible (at least on all the models I've used them on). Perhaps they didn't spend as much into this one due to the lack of popularity/demand for this device. Still surprises me though, it should cost cheaper in that case as well.
@jerflash: Actually on the S5 the gain in thickness is almost not noticeable. My dad uses one and switched backcovers and you don't see it.
Inductive coils are super thin copperwires that need next to no room for themselves.
I bought one of these for my note 3 and even though it did give it some weight and thickness, the battery cover was thick enough that the camera lens would not come in contact when places on a flat surface which was nice.

It definitely works (using it daily at work) so whoever you talked to has no idea what they're talking about. Wouldn't be the first time honestly.
That wireless charging cover looks super ugly and so doesn't fit the amazing design of the rest of the pone. Not sure what Samsung was thinking when making such a poor looking charging cover.

Could you please tell me whether the extra thickness of the cover makes it impossible to fit a case over it? I have in mind a flip case.
Samsung do not yet list a wireless charging back on their web site for the Galaxy Alpha. I wonder if this is a picture of the back for the bigger battery.
I got my official wireless charging back. Unfortunately, it does make the phone slightly thicker which means cases are not going to fit over it. I tried a cheap plastic soft case which I thought would stretch enough to fit but it didn't. So I had better not drop my phone.....
Otherwise, the wireless charging works fine with a Nokia DT desktop charger.

[Q] Help finding my ideal case for the Z Ultra

Hello,
My Z Ultra should be arriving later this week. For my previous phone (a Samsung Galaxy Note 2), I had the following case/holster combination...
http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B1G8FDQ
I would really like to have a similar case for my Z Ultra, but have been unable to locate one myself. If you have seen one somewhere, please let me know.
Regards,
Judging by the lack of response, I am assuming that such a case does not exist for the Z Ultra. I guess I will have to get a friend of mine with a 3d printer to make a custom holster for me. Since I will be doing that, I may as well go with one of the cases with a built in battery for the phone side of the set. Anyone know of a 3rd party one that can be charged using the magnetic connector? I know the Sony CP12 case can, but I am not willing to pay that kind of money.
Regards,

I have looked at it, and the case is charged via Micro USB.
I broke down and ordered a battery case that charges via micro USB from http://www.ebay.com/itm/151426250654
I just received it last night, and while it is not my idea of the perfect case, it does feel very sturdy and well built. My phone fits in it nice & secure, yet is easy to remove when I want to. There was no manual included with the case, although the box it came in did say it had a 5v 800ma input and 5v 500ma output. Based on this, I assume the case can trickle charge while passing power through to the phone. I will test this in the next couple of days, once I have drained both the battery on the case & on the phone a bit.
Update: Less than 24 hours after I put the case on my phone, the case suddenly started feeling warm to the touch and its charging light turned on (even though it was not plugged in to anything). Shortly after that, I was able to smell burnt plastic coming from the micro USB opening on the case. Based on this, I definitely do NOT recommend this case.
Regards,

[MOD] Cheap wireless charging (~$15USD)

I wanted wireless charging, but the only one available (from fonesalesman.com) costs about $80USD to my door.
So, I bought an S5 pad and used some copper tape I had lying around. NOTE: Copper tape (or at least the one I have) is only conductive on one side because of the adhesive. I rolled the ends up to make large contacts for the terminals on the phone and wireless charging pad.
I also removed the golden pins from the wireless charging pad because they were a bit thick. If you do this, be careful not to remove the silver pad underneath (I almost did).
See pictures attached, they're pretty explanatory.
The current pad I am using is a bit thick, and have ordered a new one, but it works! And it doesn't cost the earth.
Hope this helps people.
Also, see attached the wireless charging pad I got.
It works, but its thick.
If anyone has some thin wireless charging pads, please recommend.
How does it look with the back cover on? Im thinking about doing this with the extended battery. Since there is some room available to the left it might fit better? Can you take a picture from the side so that one can see how thick the charger thing is?
