Slimport adapter (Micro usb to HDMI) - G3 Accessories

Does anyone know where to buy a good quality Slimport adapter from? I have an official Samsung MHL 2.0 cable but unfortunately LG phones don't support MHL MHL supports 4K output and Slimport doesn't. Really don't know why they don't go with MHL especially since the g3 has a 2K screen. Slimport can not output any higher than 1080p... makes the 4K video recording capability useless on the g3. I also wonder how the phones 2k screen output will look on 1080p tvs

This phone doesn't support MHL 3.0 like the z2. It uses Slimport which is a different technology. MHL adapters won't work with this phone.

Thank you for your query regarding your LG G3.
I have read through your email and I can confirm that you can output 4K from your G3 to your 4K TV using a MHL 3.0 adapter connected from the phone to your TV.
Depending on the 4K TV you have this may be automatically output to 4K or you may need to change the resolution settings to show a 4K video.
I hope my email has answered your query and assisted you today; I would really appreciate your feedback. Please help us to improve our customer service by completing the short survey after this email.
Thank you in advance.

This is the email I received from LG. But clove have said the phone uses Slimport in their review and they listed it as one of the phones downside. But Engadget said it uses MHL. I'm pretty sure it's Slimport as clove review shows them using it and the Slimport official website says lg g3 support Slimport. http://us.slimportconnect.com/slimport-supported-devices/
But it's not so bad as Slimport has been updated to support 4k.

As a SlimPort spokesperson (and a new xda member), I can help to clarify the video output features for the G3. LG switched from MHL to SlimPort with the launch of the Nexus 4 in November 2012. All subsequent LG mobile devices are SlimPort-enabled. The G3 can shoot 4K videos. However, LG chose to not support the 4K output direct to the TV. The G3 will output full bandwidth 1080p video via the SlimPort/HDMI dongle. When connected to a 4K TV, the TV will detect the 1080p signal and properly scale it to 4K. To view the 4K content, the video must be transferred via USB to a media player that supports 4K. FYI – there are no devices that support both MHL and SlimPort.
Current certified SlimPort dongles on the market work with any SlimPort enabled phones. As mentioned, you can check with the SlimPort web site to get a current list of devices that support the format and of locations to order dongles. Last February, the SlimPort 4K receiver chip (used in the dongles), ANX7738, was introduced and you should see 4K dongle products on the market later this year.

So it is confirmed the g3 won't work on the MHL 3.0 despite the LG staff confirmed that in the email?

Does seem odd that they said it supports 4k mhl, when the newer lg flagship phones claim to have ditched mhl in favor of slimport, maybe they know something we dont know, but i reckon it was a misunderstanding only. If it does support Mhl 3.0, this implies that the lg flagship series phones support usb 3.0, which we all know it doesnt simply because it does not have the 11 pin micro usb mhl connector, like samsung.
But interestingly enough, I do know that lg is considering usb 3.0 for g2 g3 and flex, simply because they actually HAVE added a NEW proprietary 11pin micro usb 3.0 port on all of these phones (take a look, you will see 3 extra pins on each side of the standard microusb tongue, deeper inside the connector, these are usb 3.0 lines!). Although this new connector is not compatible with mhl 3.0 connector, which implies it will likely support a different video out protocol like slimport 4k or 3.0 if you will.
Slimport 4k requires a higher bandwidth interface like usb 3.0, and since recent lg schematic drawings prove that they have wired up the new connector to handle usb 3.0, then once someone makes the 4k adapter and a mating 11 pin connector, we will then hopefully see all these phones capable of supporting 4k soon, in addition to usb 3.0 fast charging, and maybe even support usb 3.0 OTG interface!

I had initially asked them if to confirm whether it uses MHL or Slimport and then got the email stating it supports MHL. I then replied requesting clarification as the official Slimport website has listed the lg g3 as a supported device and have not received a reply. Also the Xperia z2 has mhl 3.0 but as far as I'm aware it uses usb 2.0?

I don't care about 4k output actually. What I care is the support of use otg and screen output simultaneously. That's why mhl is more attractive than slimport atm. Would be disappointed if at the end G3 doesn't support mhl3.0.

The new dongles will work on the G3, however, 4K output is not supported by the G3 circuitry so the output would still be high bitrate 1080p. A 4K TV would detect the 1080p signal and scale it to 4K. Best to check with LG on their product plans for 4K support in the future.

It's confirmed the g3 supports slimport and not mhl. Zumashark is a spokesperson for Slimport and it's also listed as a supported device on the Slimport website. Although I also would have preferred mhl 3.0 as I have a 4K TV with mhl built in, which would have allowed me to control the phone using the TV remote when plugged into the TV and it would have charged the phone at the same time. 4K output was something I really wanted.

Just in case anyone else is looking around for info like this, as I am.. I found this after i read the above comments.
The MHL consortium announced a 3.0 spec on Tuesday, upping Mobile High Link's resolution support from 1080p up to 4K at 30 frames per second. Future Android phones and other devices that support the new spec will be able to push video at 3840x2160 while drawing up to 10 watts of charging power; they'll also support 7.1 surround sound audio and the HDCP 2.2 content protection standard. Of course, the 3.0 spec is mostly futureproofing, since 4K TVs are just beginning to show up in stores and homes.
MHL has found its way into more than 200 products at this point, with millions of devices on the market. SlimPort, by comparison, is available in only a few: Google's Nexus 4 and Nexus 7, the LG Optimus G Pro, a Fujitsu Windows 8 tablet and the ASUS PadFone Infinity. Last year Anandtech did a good job of summarizing what makes SlimPort different from MHL:
"SlimPort is a new video output standard which works over microUSB, and is effectively an MHL alternative based on the DisplayPort standard administered by VESA. SlimPort is offered both license and royalty free, and supports up to 1080p60 or 1080p30 with 3D content over HDMI 1.4 (up to 5.4 Gbps of bandwidth), in addition to support for DVI, VGA (up to 1366x768 and 720p at 60 Hz), and DisplayPort.
What's different about SlimPort from a user-facing perspective is that external microUSB power is not required for the adapter to work and is instead only required for optional charging. At the same time, the adapters draw no power from the source to operate."

it's not all LG phones that don't support MHL. My LG Nitro HD uses MHL but i'm unhappy to see that i need to buy another adapter for my G3

Hi Guys,
Well, I have to sadly report that, according to my experience, the LG G3 supports NEITHER SlimPort nor MHL.
I have a SlimPort adapter and it works really well with my LG GPad 8.3 V500 (rooted + custom ROM called CandyKAT that I compiled myself). I just plug it in and... there it goes : display duplicated on my TV.
I also have an MHL Adapter. If I use that with my Sony XPeria Z2 (rooted, stock ROM) I just plug it in and... voilà ! Display duplicated on my TV.
I try to use each one of them with my LG G3 (rooted ; stock ROM) : I either have : 1°) nothing happens AT ALL ; 2°) when I'm lucky, I get an image for 5 seconds and then "snow" on my TV ; image then comes back... and then snow and so on...
Nothing the like on the LG GPad V500 !!!
I have this LG G3 for about 12 hours... and I probably will NOT keep for more than that. Flawless MHL or SlimPort support is a MUST HAVE for me...
I just despise manufacturers claiming things that are simply NOT TRUE !
Unless of course SlimPort is supported only with a custom ROM installed !
Maybe there's an option that should be turned on to let the G3 work with either MHL or SlimPort... but I don't know which that would be
Regards.

I have a slimport adapter for my G3 on STOCK rom and kernel, and have NO issues whatsoever. There is no support or 'switch' for MHL on the G3 because the video out is hardware based, it's either SlimPort or MHL.
IMO, SlimPort is more promising and has more versatility than MHL:
http://blog.clove.co.uk/2012/11/02/what-is-slimport/
http://blog.clove.co.uk/2013/11/07/mhl-v-slimportwhat-is-the-difference/

I too have no problems with a cheap slimport adapter and my Samsung Smart TV 2014 series, the adapter only needs to be powered to work.
To be honest, the G3 also connects perfectly via Miracast protocol to the same Smart TV, so in this situation there should be no need of an adapter.

Hi 2kool4u and missionimpossible,
Thanks for your reply...
After reading your posts about making a LG G3 work seamlessly with a SlimPort adapter, I decided to order a new one on Amazon.
Maybe my adapter was faulty ? It may be, even though I don't think so : if I use this adapter with my LG GPad, it works perfectly and I have a stable image...
All I can tell is that I used this adapter powered and unpowered... same result
Anyways, Amazon offers this really nice ability to return products, so I'll have the opportunity to test it in depth... and I'll report as soon as it will be done
Regards.

This is what I bought from Amazon.
To work it has to be powered.

HDMI-cable and joypad for LG G2

I wonder if someone thought to connect their G2 to TV or monitor using microUSB-HDMI adaptor? I couldn't find anything designed specially for G2 (only G2x). I tried with my old SGS3 microUSB-HDMI adaptor and it didn't work. I know some of you guys can send a link for compatible/tested model.
Another concern about PS3 bluetooth joypad as a control for some games on G2. Any chance this combination cam work? I saw only posts about SGS3 and SGN2 combined with these joysticks.

OP, you need to use Slimport compatible cable or Miracast receiver (it's more expensive, but wireless). If your TV have DLNA/Miracast feature built-in, you don't need anything more to hook phone up to TV wirelessly

MHL is the USB connection on your phone. Basically it's usb to Hdmi
But there are two standards MHL and slimport
Think apple Use a third one.
Something like this should work:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Slimport-My...695?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19e77502af
I bought one that looks exactly like this, I don't have the exact link but this is the same thing. You have to plug in the USB to a wall charger or PC USB port, and you need to be on a stock rom because slimport doesn't work with any of the CM or AOSP based roms I tried.
Using this cable, the G2 actually outputs a pretty good video feed at 1080P. The colors look a bit washed out on my PC monitor but the speed is good and games can run at around 40+ FPS (as opposed to 60 FPS when not using slimport and just running on the phone). I also use the Moga Pro controller, it's Bluetooth and has very little input lag, I don't have a PS3 controller.
I just wish CM would fix slimport, it is a huge feature for me.
I just bought recently G2, came from S3, very good phone Im happy with it and its quiet interesting to connect it to TV and gamepad... I think I will try buy one of those EBAY slimports to test it, but Im thinking about cheap chinese ps3 controller, anyone tried it on this phone for gaming? And is it worth to play games like this? Because alot of games uses alot of touches
Hmm, I have a question, what about to connect Xbox controller via USB to phone ? The external power is demanding ?

It's correct ?

Nope. G2 uses Slimport, not MHL. It's a hardware difference (basically, DisplayPort vs HDMI), even if the adapter looks similar.

I'm in for more information on this. I've had a little MHL adapter that has worked well to hook to hotel TV's but I discovered I can't even plug it into the the G3.
Such a disappointed they went with a disappointment (actually the real disappointment is that phones stopped including dedicated microHDMI ports).
Anyways, the cheapest SlimPort adapter I've found on amazon is still $30. Is it as small as the MHL adapter? And why so much more money? I got the official Samsung MHL adapter for $10 on Amazon... and some off-brand SlimPort is $30..... also, why is it not even an option to buy on LG's website or Verizons website? I would think they would list it for like $180 or something but nothing.
SlimPort adapters do work fine. This is the one I tried on my G3 last night, bought it last year for my Nexus 7 2013:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00ECU3M22/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1411212925&sr=8-1
Both audio and video come through clean. It has a second, std usb, connector, that you need to plug into a regular usb port to get power.

Slimport and HDMI to rca converter

I'm attempting to connect my g3 to the display on my car stereo via slimport and an HDMI to rca converter. Apparently the resolution on the g3 is higher than the converter can handle. Is there any way possible to lower the resolution put out through the slimport so that it is within the parameters of the converter?
Sent from my LG-VS985 using XDA Free mobile app
I think you should've chosen the right variant of the converter at the very beginning in order to not have problems now. I had similar situation because my friend gifted me that converter. When it broke down, I realized that I'd better buy it on my own, considering all necessary features and my preferences. First step was to find out a reliable article-guide, describing best HDMI to RCA converters. Second step was to analyse everything carefully. Then, I finally chose RCA to HDMI,AV to HDMI Converter,ABLEWE 1080P Mini as it had the highest ranking. So, this article was really useful in choosing suitable variant!

USB-C to HDMI on 6P - Tried it, as expected, didn't work.

I bought a USB-C to HDMI adapter through the Google Store, as I have a laptop with USB-C (and no HDMI Out or DIsplay Port) that I need to mirror to my 65" TV. Works great for that. (Miracast and Chromecast frequently drop the mirroring connection for me).
Just for sh*ts and giggles, I tried it on the 6P to see if it would work, even though I knew it wasn't supposed to. I can confirm that there is no video out on the 6P through the USB-C port. TV says there is no signal from the 6P.
Nothing earth shattering here. I just figured there are some people out there where in the back of their minds they were still wondering whether it might work. Put your minds at ease, it does not.

Bummer, why does your Chromecast drop signal, that sounds router related.
I know Google is really pushing Chromecast, but limiting people to 720p is just sad. I've tried the experimental 1080p ChromeCast from my laptop Chrome to my Sony KDL65W850C and it just produces a broken picture. The Nexus 5 had fantastic SlimPort that I used! It was amazing for movies or testing TV inputs. Heck, I even used it for VMware Horizon View and loved it! This is a feature that Google should put into all Nexus phones.

I had to get that off my chest.

I agree , i know the chromecast is decent, but to actually mirror you're entire display the slimport option was so superior , no frame drops etc . shame it doesn't have it, but oh well , maybe the nexus Nexus huh.

I'm doubting it. Google wants Cast to take over. I can see it from their POV. But the fact they want to call this PREMIUM and not having this feature...very disappointing.
I really do appreciate you trying this out. I was searching at work the other day for a USB-C to HDMI, but couldn't find one. Thanks for doing the needful!

It's not really HDMI that's supported. It's DisplayPort. And DisplayPort is already supported in the USB Type-C spec. Google just didn't implement it for whatever insane reason.
Check out this image. It shows that the USB Type-C ALTERNATE MODE uses pins A2, A3 and A10, A11. These can be for either high speed USB3, or for DisplayPort.

Anyone know if it would be possible to implement via a custom kernal?

I'd imagine that the hardware doesn't exist in the phone to make this idea possible.

Thought type C was capable by default.
It is shocking to me that a 2015 flagship phone does not support video out via dongle to HDMI cable. My old S3 and HTC M7 do. All my iPhones did and still do. I believe the Samsung S6 does not support video out either.

I thought this was a must have at first. As it turns out. I never really used it on my old phone. Loving the chromecast though.

Though I'm sure it won't help, I sent feedback to Google regarding why "Enable Wireless Display" isn't available under the "Cast" display setting. What a crock!
I guess it's Chromecast Dongle or bust. All smartphones today should have wireless display capabilities - smh.

The spec allows for it. However, it's up to the hardware designer to actually implement it. Google decided not to. Bad idea in my opinion.

From what I understand, it's a USB 3.1 feature. Though the device uses a USB C connector, the data path is still USB 2.0.

Its actually not a USB 3.1 feature. It's part of the USB Type C spec called "Alternate Mode". DisplayPort would use the same pins that could be used to enable USB 3.0 to push DisplayPort data instead of USB3.0 data. Its a one or the other deal with USB Type C. Either DisplayPort or USB 3.0/3.1. USB 2.0 is always present.
Crap, wish I saw this post before I purchased an USB-C to HDMI cable from newegg

I tether my phones data, so that I can watch Hulu. I just bought a cable thinking I'd be able to just run Hulu through my phone to my TV w/o tethering, but I guess I wasted my money buying that cable.

There is no MHL hardware on the phone and typically MHL support drivers aren't open source so they won't work with CM.
Miracast is supposed to be supported, I don't have a receiver so I can't tell.
Chromecast isn't exactly screen mirroring, but there is no reason why it shouldn't support the limited functionality it targets.
What might work (haven't tried it with this phone yet) is connecting a DisplayLink adapter via USB. You'd need to install and run their application on top and there is a good chance it won't support stuff like 3D games, because it basically needs to copy, encode, compress etc. frame buffer contents and ship them over the USB interface as data while they are being reconverted into video on the DL hardware.
I think it's a real shame straight-forward HDMI ports got dropped on phones years ago. I'm pretty sure it was because vendors wanted to sell distinct settop devices and Hollywood didn't want "phone" content on TV screens, not because users didn't want them.
