rooting And tethering - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have had my z2 for a while now and have been contemplating rooting it the whole time. The main things that's put me off is that the Barclay's app will not work with a rooted device and that's probably the single most useful app I have ever used... However I've come across a new problem which is making me want/need to root more than ever before. My provider (three UK) used to have an amazing contract with unlimited data AND unlimited tethering / hotspot. Unfortunately when I upgraded to my z2, they failed to tell me that whilst I have unlimited data, my tethering is now limited to 2GB a month without even the opportunity to buy more if I need some.
What happens now if I have my laptop connected to my phone is that I will get a text from three every 5 minutes or so saying that I'm over my tethering limit and then when I try to go to w page on my laptop, it ends up with a three page saying that I'm out of data.
I've tried a root free app that was supposed to work but it ended up doing exactly the same thing, so three knew I was using My phone as a hotspot and stopped it.
With a rooted device can I tether without limits? Or will three know what's going on a stop me again?
Suppose I might as well ask this as well; Is there a way I could get the Barclay's app to think the phone isn't rooted so it will work again?
Cheers!

Looks like you've got sane reason I still have rooted my z2 dammit barclays
Regarding the tethering have you tried foxfi?

I know! It was the same case on my iPhone, I couldn't jailbreak because I lost the Barclay's app. It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't use it like a million times a day. Its by far the most useful app I've ever had. XD
U tried foxfi before but unfortunately it didn't work, ive come across clockworkmod tether though and it works without issues. So if anyone else is having the same problem that's my reccomendation!
I only use tethering because I'm in the forces and we can't get WiFi in my block but Id rather like to play league in my downtime.. Hopefully its not enough to trigger three into looking at my account, anyone know?

Check out root cloak for Xposed, it has a list of compstible/incompatible apps so take a look

[Q] Will Hotspot work after the 15th?

With a fully rooted TB running a custimzed Rom (currently BAMF 1.6 remix), will I still be able to use the built in mobile hotspot function without having to select and pay for a tethering plan once vz changes on the 15th?
I noticed while I was running the Perfect Storm rom that I didn't get any warnings/notifications about the hotspot data usage when I started the app, but on stock and BAMF those warnings pop up...
Anyone know how thats going to work?
No, it absolutely will not work. Unless you pay for it!!
Surely there has to be someway to make it work. I just came from an AT&T Inspire and once I had it rooted with a custom rom it was able to work, even though initially the sim lock prevented the app from even opening if the account didnt have a tethering plan activated.
I beg a developer or anyone that knows how to give a look at how we can do the same thing for the TB.

I am guessing you didn't know what application you were using for tethering, because it sure wasn't the built in one that comes standard with the phone. You're obviously not the first person to ask this and there's plenty of solutions. Google is your friend.
You may not be able to use built in mobile hotspot, but there are other applications out there. Barnacle being one of them.

It absolutely was the mobile hotspot that was built in - or came standard, that worked on the Inspire after a root, unlock, and custom rom. Im aware of other third party apps, such as Wireless Tether, but I prefer the mobile hotspot app because of its functionality and the fact its already there.
It might have been the same "application" as far as you knew, but it might have just been a thin wrapper for something doing the same process as wireless tether for root or barnacle since you were using a custom rom. Unless you want to go and dissemble the code for the apk you are talking about, you really dont know.
You're also comparing apples and oranges. Ignore the fact the thunderbolt has a sim card in it because it's not used like a typical sim card on a GSM phone. The sim card might handle updates and such like any other GSM card, but you cant do much else with it. The phone has an ESN # still and that trumps it as well since you cant just take the phone anywhere network wise. The phone is still tied to a CDMA network more than anything else so you cant think something like a simple sim hack will work for it. It might be using the current GSM standard for 4g, but when it's out of range or on voice, it's using CDMA.
There are reasons why programs like barnacle and wireless tether exist and we're not all using a slightly modded, but more or less the same apk that comes with the phone. The best way for you to to figure out why since a simple "no, it cant be done" doesnt work is to try it yourself.

[Q] One X+ tethering block by AT&T

Hi Guys. I posted in the HTC One X (non +) and then noticed this separate forum. Sorry for the repeat.
My company just gave me an HTC One X+ from AT&T since I didnt want an iPhone. Seems like a good device but I did run into one snag.
My previous phone was a Galaxy S2 but was having major battery drain issues with Exchange Server so I thought I would try a different manufacture and keep my fingers crossed. The snag is this: with my SGS2 I was able to use FoxFi (and others) for WiFi tethering/hotspot and it worked great even bone-stock. With the HOX+ it seems At&t has gotten a little smarter and can detect when a program is trying to hotspot and I get taht message saying to call them if I want it enabled when I start FoxFi.
I have the paid version of clockworkmod and that will not work at all - says failed to connect when I hit start in Windows 7. I also have the paid version of PDAnet and that kind of works but the connection get dropped pretty regularly making it unreliable. Not sure if this has anything to do with Att's detections since they did gave me some trouble with the SGS2 as well (not exactly same though).
My question is this: can I get FoxFi to work WITHOUT root? Since it is brand new and not mine technically I hate to start hacking the thing up so quickly. But the tethering is a function I really like.
Thanks
Ernie
My phone is rooted, FoxFi and PDAnet didn't work..
I'm using this one :

More info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2074798
I'm notl 100% sure but i dont think you'll be able to get what you want without being rooted. I'm surprised you had such good luck with the GS2 if it was on att and not rooted. Previous poster did suggest a great tool, been using it for years... But have to be rooted to do so
I don't believe you can actually get WiFi tethering on your phone without paying the extra amount from AT&T if you don't have your phone rooted. I have mine rooted and the hotspot feature works great!
Thanks guys. Thats what I figured. Guess I will have to just do it.
Ya, go figure about the S2. Guess I got lucky with that one.

I just got my HTC One x plus, and I am using PDAnet (free version), and I am able to tether via USB, with no issues. I have been able to do skype calls with no issues at all, browsing the web is fine as well. Tethering via wi-fi is the challenge, I have not been able to find anything that will allow me to do this. I use AT&T and my device is un-rooted.

PDANet works for me but seems to drop me at randomly. Not sure if it has to do with the ATT block.
So does Att have the ability to detect teathering - rooted or unrooted?

with wi-fi and un-rooted, it seems they detect, with USB un-rooted they don't, at least, this is what happens on my end.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S5 losing network connectivity

My wife and I both have brand new Galaxy S5s, and we both intermittently experience this problem. One of us will send a text message to the other, the text will show as being sent, but the other person doesn't receive it. If the person set to receive the message reboots their phone, the message comes through (as well as any other "pending" messages), and normal phone use continues for a few days until this issue returns. Rebooting seems to always fix the issue temporarily.
This of course is not limited to just communication between our phones, but I was using that as an example. Often times, I'll reboot my phone, and realize I have 3 new text messages, and 2 voicemails from yesterday. Very frustrating.
Phone calls are also affected. When these symptoms are present, phone calls cannot be placed or received until the phone is rebooted. Incoming calls go directly to voicemail.
The worst part of it is, there is no easy way to tell our phones are not connected to the network. The reception status shows good connectivity. Most of the time we're connected to wifi, so email and browsing the internet still work.
I'm just wondering if other people are experiencing this, or have any suggestions of some things we can try. Thanks for the help.

Samsung just rolled out a new update for T-Mobile S5 variant. This update should fix the issues you're having. Here is the link to it: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=29848

Well, that was very timely. I'm glad they released a fix the same day I decided to ask for help. I appreciate the link, and I'll install it and see how it works out. Cheers.
The update killed a lot of people's data speeds. I made a ticket with t-mobile techs. I suggest anyone else with bad data speeds after the new update do the same.

From what I know T-Mobile doesn't care if your phone is rooted because you're not doing any warranty service. If that was the case they will probably tell you that its voided.. I have seen a few that root their own phones at their job so I doubt it'll be a problem. But I guess every T-Mobile store isn't the same..

Yes this is the exact problem I had with last GS5. Tmobile replaced it and I still have this problem with the new GS5. The tried to tell me it was just how the old GS5 settings were set. They had me do Factory reset many times, it never helped. Now with the replacement GS5 the exact same problem. Like you everything looks great on the display. I would just get calls on my home line wanting to know why I never answer my mobile phone. The only thing that helps me is a restart but it is only temporary. Do you know if they have released a fix for this problem?

The only thing it seems the tmobile employees know how to do is a factory reset .. That is their solution for about everything . Like the other guy said they dont handle warranty . That is for your samsung warranty when knox is tripped . If you have handset protection nothing voids it from what i have seen . I think tmobile would rather replace a rooted phone than one with a cracked screen .

[Q] Stock Hotspot App : Worked without provisioning?

Hey everyone,
I did a search on this and couldnt find anything in the forum - forgive me if this has been covered.
I tried using the stock Wifi Hotspot app today expecting to be greeted by a message about needing to pay for it. My phone is 100% stock, not rooted. I pressed the icon and it instantly turned on without any mention of extra charges or provisioning, has anyone else seen this?
I dont believe my account is provisioned for using it as a hotspot, i've never even attempted to use stock tethering in the past as I am coming from a rooted SGS3 running custom ROMs
Anyone else using Wifi Tethering without paying for it? Oh, and im not on unlimited data, not sure if that matters.
Thanks!

Since you are not on an unlimited plan, it should be provisioned out the box.
The standard app should work no problem. For you they don't care. Actually the FCC made them not care.
Unlimited, they care.
Makes sense - the more i use it the more I pay them, thanks for the helpful response

Native WiFI trick for s7 edge

If you have updated your phone like me and lost the native WiFi (grayed out apn type settings). One temporary fix is to restart your phone and when it comes back up the first thing you should do is turn on the hotspot before all of the services kick in. The only problem is that once you turn it off and need it again you will have to restart your phone again.
Hopes it works for you like it did for me.
I don't know if this has been said in a previous post.

If you get the 'no data connection' error,
just quickly turn off hotspot and turn on again.
This is all about timing,
turn on hotspot too quick after reboot and the data radios have not yet connected,
too long and the verify subscription kicks in.
there is a window inbetween that works.
This has been covered in other threads,
not my find,
just relaying info

+1 - I'm in the same exact boat
I need WiFi Tethering. Currently have a S5 that works great - but upgrade is coming next week. Deciding between S7 and LG G5 - but both seem to not have root available. I don't really care for root, but I must have WiFi tethering.
So does it work or not work for the S7? Any reasons to get the G5 instead?

Good news I got my S7 and this Wi-Fi hotspot tethering still works. So I guess it will stay workinguntill the next update? I guess I should turn off my updates. This way I can wait a while before I have to try to root this new S7.
New Update
Does anyone know if the new update disables this hot spot workaround.? It still works without the update and no root.
