[Q] LTE Help - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I just got the Z2 last week and I need some help with my LTE set up.
1. I am using my nano Sim from my HTC One M8.
2. I downloaded the att file for internet settings
3. Network Mode - LTE (Preferred)
3. The icon reads LTE
Looks like everything is working, but when I run a speed test I get terrible results. Like 0.5 mbps bad.
I have tested in various locations, but always get bad results.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

LTE isn't all it's cracked up to be .. I got an LTE sim to try recently in a large city. It turned out that H+ was actually faster , LTE was 1-2Mb, H+ was 7-8Mb , however in a less populated area I got LTE upto 20Mb. It's still down to the network in the end.

Thanks for the reply defsix. I tested on h+ also. Same results at 0.5 Mbps.
I know it comes down to coverage, but LTE is good in my area. I tested my wife's iPhone and got about 5 mbps at the same time I got 0.5.
That's why I'm not sure if I don't have something set up right.
So if I am getting the LTE icon is it just bad luck?

I'm assuming you have the correct settings on your phone ? Network settings etc.

Did you call AT&T to register the IMEI of the phone to provision it?

I've heard from several folks on att that you have to call them to set it up.

Drop by an AT&T store to see if you can get a new SIM card. Yours maybe outdated such that the newer one which could have newer information to support other towers.
I'm actually to change my SIM card up because one area I usually go to is a bit weak and they did look at my SIM card info and told me mine was an older one and try getting a new one.

If you did all the updates on the phone it shouldn't even show LTE but 4G instead. From my understanding one of the updates broke the LTE symbol so it doesnt show anymore. Mine never says it and I live in an LTE Att area.

[Discussion]T-Mobile Unlocked HOX+ Users

Hey yall I just wanted to start a discussion thread for T-Mobile like me who are braving T-Mobile's refarmed network and using the HTC One X+ (International or unlocked AT&T variant). Maybe we can get a few tips and tricks together to make our user experience a bit better.
For example, such radios yall are using, any build.prop edits that might help data speeds or GPS locking speed (if you are using the international version like I am).
Ill update the OP with the list of suggestions, maybe an FAQ.
I've been using the Phone Info app to turn off the LTE radio, although I'm not entirely sure that is does. I use the GSM auto mode which is the default on 3G non LTE phones. The default on the One X+ is GSM/WCDMA/LTE
Is anyone experiencing weak or wavering 3G signal (over PCS) as discussed toward the end of this thread (scroll down about halfway on page three)?
http://forums.tmonews.com/index.php?topic=18318.40
The very knowledgeable posters there say that T-Mobile is using less power on PCS (WCDMA), as compared to AWS, right now. And probably won't turn it up until they start shifting AWS to LTE.

Definitely especially indoors. I get full bars of PCS where available, but indoors I'm switching between 3G/"4G" and Edge.

Do you have a phone with AWS 3G to compare in the same location and see if it has better 3G reception?

Yep, my Nexus 4 gets constant HSPA+ where I get spotty PCS
I have a question for you guys that are using the HOX+ on T-mobile.
What type of sim card are you using?
I know that on the original HTC One X, you had to use a non-gba sim card that said 50.01 on the front to make it work, and that if you used the one that said 50.05 you wouldn't get data even if you change the APN settings.
I just bought this phone a few minutes ago on Amazon and I know Houston is a 1900MHZ pcs market so that's not an issue, i just want to make sure I don't run into any issues with the sim card I have as it is fairly new.

Well I cut my sim from a regular SIM card so there aren't really numbers on it. I think you'll be safer with a newer one than an older one so you're fine.
Also located in Houston and getting pretty good 3G
I tried to sign up over at tmonews forums and registration for new users is closed. Anybody have any insight as to when that will reopen?
I believe one of the reasons TMO has to go with lower power at first is to measure the impact of their new 1900mhz spectrum usage in the existing market in question. Since other carriers are using the same spectrum they need to make sure they do not cause interference. The best way to do that is short and long term RF studies. Start off with a refarmed freq at lower power then over time bump up the power and make sure it doesnt cause any new interference. If so then your able to go to a higher power. Im sure the FCC has time constraints for this but add into it the amount of towers im sure the carrier would rather accomplish more with each visit. So if an upgrade or tweek is needed then they can also adjust the power.
Forgot to add i recently acquired the ATT version of the HTC ONE X+ 64GB and it does ok in the Dallas area. Had it switch a few times to G and E but for the most part i stays on 4G. HSPA+21.6 DL speeds go between 2megs down and 9 megs down.
Prior to that i was using a Nexus 4 and TMO GS3. I seem to have better speeds with my GS3.

The forums have been like that for a while (at least months). Don't know why. Perhaps you can email the person who writes the blog and ask about it.
I live in the Orlando area, I am on Straight Talk. I was using an at&t compatible SIM from straight talk and got up to 7mb down and 1.5mb up but these speeds were not consistent, a few days ago I switched to a t -mobile compatible SIM from straight talk and now I get consistent 12mb down and 3mb up. I was very surprised! I'm so glad I did this switch
I am using an at&t 1X+ which I unlocked.

[Q] How to enable GSM mode?

I warrantied out my first rezound due to the vibrating not working anymore, and my replacement arrived, and its updated to the latest OTA 3.14.605.12, and when i go into mobile network, I only get the choice of LTE/CDMA and CDMA. I remember on my last phone, when i went in there, I had the option of selecting GSM and other options...
I thought the .12 version enabled world options to allow using GSM bands? Maybe I'm confused... I'm trying to get it up and running on a straight talk sim (at&t)
This will give you gsm option: http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...ull-ruu-build-4-03-605-2-for-the-htc-rezound/
This one to get 3G working: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1914122
Thanks!
Found that the other day and forgot to post back here. Got straight talk working on edge. Call quality was great, signal great. Wanted faster speeds so i tried the 3G thing and got HSPA working, but signal was absolutely horrible and cut in and out non-stop to where it was not usable 95% of the time. Straight talk is not worth it for me because the edge data speeds are almost unbearable for this phone (maxed at 0.12Mbps if i could get it to even register). HSPA i clocked it up at around 8-9Mbps, but that would work for 10-15 second bursts between switching to 3g and back to edge, and back to 3g, and back to hspa. It was very frustrating, so back on verizon I am. Trying to save money somehow but can't seem to shake verizon for the life of me. Nothing compares to the speeds and consistent signal strength.

Slow Data Speeds, Help?!

Hello, I am asking if anyone could possibly give me any insight as to why my data speeds are very very slow for supposedly being 4g? Upon doing the speedtest I got a ping of 67, download score of 3.728 mps and upload score of 1.119 mps. This is the best I have been able to achieve and I am literally a couple hundred yards from a newly built att antenna. At my house about 1 mile and a half away I usually get download and upload scores well under 2.0 and .5.. I am running The Collective's AoCP version 5.7 with the I717UCMD3 modem. By the way on my network mode when I try to select LTE/WCDMA or LTE/GSM/WCDMA it does not stick and goes back to GSM/WCDMA preferred. I have about 5 different APN's and the ATT wap.cingular is the one that sticks and seems to work the best. I am on the straight talk 25$/ mo plan with the additional 1gb of data. Any help would be tremendous!
Are you sure your on at&t straight talk and not tmobile?
What color is your SIM card?

Yes I am sure.. I have the att white, orange, and blue sim card that I bought from the att store and I pay my bill on the att website.
Update!
After being on the phone with ATT for over an hour and a half I switched to the 60$ per month prepaid plan which gives unlimited calling, texting, and 2gb of data... Only to still have slow internet speeds (around 2mbps max). They tried to send me text messages that would install the internet settings, which did not make it to my phone. Then they scheduled me for an appointment tomorrow morning to get the ATT 4g LTE sim card. They said that it is better for my phone to use that sim instead of the standard sim card and that it is usually 30$ to upgrade but that they would give it to me for free! Then after the call it seems right as the clock stroke 9 pm LTE showed up on the top of my notification bar! The speed test showed as follows in the attachment. I am looking forward to seeing what this new sim card can do for me and I am very pleased at my new speeds!
It sounds like you are in an area that is receiving the LTE upgrade. We are without it still.
Yeah we installed a new tower here on campus last year and I think it really helped. Today I went in to get my new sim card and while I was there it was stuck back on HSDPA+ but when I got home it had gone back to LTE. They said that the custom ROM on my phone may not support LTE and that I may need to get it reset. I just made sure to write down the APN settings in case I lose them on a reboot I can just fix it again myself. So happy with the LTE though as my home internet is only 3mbps!

HSPA+ = 4G LTE. Some roms have mixed up icons. Its your phone experience that matters, not the icon.
Yeah well with the H+ icon it was around 2mbps and with the LTE icon its around 10-16 Mbps hah and its the same rom. But I think when I turn my phone off it takes a while for my LTE to restore so I'll just try keeping it on at all times!

In the old days we used to reboot every day, but I probably don't reboot this phone unless I'm swapping sim cards as I leave the USA. I think your reception will improve over time as the network improves. I wonder why it takes the phone a while to "warm up"?
I honestly have no idea. I would say maybe the rom aettings have it set to wmcda preferred and you can't manually change it but after the phone tries using the apn it changes to the lte/gsm/wdcma network mode and it sticks. Oh well no big deal hah I tried the speed test last night at work about 200 yards from the att tower and received 24.5 mbps. Very happy with that!

[Q] 4g LTE issues

Hey everyone! So I've had this phone for about a month now and I'm pretty happy with it so far. Since I've gotten the phone, I haven't seen LTE pop up once (apparently CT has no LTE yet...) but this weekend I was visiting some friends in Manhattan. I know some parts of Manhattan have LTE. for example my friend has an iPhone (same carrier obviously) and he had LTE while I did not.. I made sure my network setting was on cdma/gsm/lte auto and I even went as far as typing in *#*#4636#*#* to check the radio settings. I did get the LTE symbol for like 10 secs but after that it disappeared and I lost service.. Another note to make is that I'm not on the stock apn setting because I changed it to epc.tmobile.com to boost my hspa+ speeds.
That's why. Lte uses fast.T-Mobile.com apn from what I'm aware of.

Hmm.. that's weird, because i switched back to the stock one which is fast.t-mobile.com apn and it still wasn't working while my friends iPhone still showed that there was LTE. Maybe I should create another new fast.t-mobile.com but keep the same settings as the current one i use for hspa+?
As the above posters mentioned make sure you have the fast.t-mobile.com apn.
BUT be sure you spell it right. LOL i made the mistake of spelling fast with fats and it took me 2 days to catch my typo. It would show the signal strength of LTE but not actually connect to it.

Haha that's so funny! One more question even though I wasn't on fast.t-mobile.com and was on epc.t-mobile.com i still wasn't able to see the LTE icon, any clue why? Thanks!
The only thing i can think of is that HTC / Samsung seem to have lower DB reporting of the actual signal strength compared to Apple.
Ive been in a discussion on other threads about how the signal indicator on my Note 2 and HTC One always seem to show low signal when LTE is connected.
Another person chimed in stating that they compared their HTC One to an iPhone 5 and noticed the signal indicator on the One shows 1-2 bars and the iPhone 5 showed full bars LTE.. Same T-Mobile Network phones side by side.
My rebuttal was simple. I downloaded an app that showed on both my Note 2 and HTC One a higher decibel reading then what my phone software was showing.
What leads me to believe this is with 1 bar i can still get 20+ megs down and 15+ megs up. Normally in low signal speeds would degrade.
I was also with Sprint on the GS3 and EVO LTE and the EVO LTE suffered from the same problems early on. They sent out several firmware and radio updates that corrected false and low signal readings and right before i left Sprint my EVO LTE outperformed the GS3 When / IF i could find LTE in Dallas on Sprint.
Give it some time. Im hoping they put more towers online and that devices get radio and firmware updates to perform better with the LTE that TMO is using.
I don't think the APN matters. I use the different APN for faster HSPA and I can still get LTE. I'll show you when I get home or in an area with LTE. LoL!! Also, in that very thread it was stated that changing the APN won't affect your LTE.
perhaps BUT if you misspell the apn then it wont be effective at all.
APN:fats.t-mobile.com you wont get an actual connection to LTE because its supposed to be fast. not fats.
This also happens if its the ONLY apn. If you have multiple APN it will revert back to another that works..
but this only happened to me so who knows..

I have two APNs. one uses epc and one uses fast. LTE works on both. If it switches over automatically, it leaves no trace in the Access Points menu; it is always right where I left it when I check later.

That's weird, I was on epc and LTE did not show up at all while my friends phone (iPhone 5) did. Do you think maybe there is something wrong with the lte radio or something? I don't know why it's showing up for yours but not mine..
It could be the radio firmware. HTC continues to update the radio with most releases fixing bugs..you should report this bug to HTC dev. Because I have the same issue NEVER get above 1 or 2 bars on LTE T mo

Anyone here running CyanogenMod by any chance?
I just got the HTC One and flashed away Sense the very first day. Despite living in Chicago, the phone's signal has been pretty shotty and even dropped to 0 in areas where T mobile claims to have "4 bars". My girlfriend complains about hearing static in the background despite the signal being clear on my end. After speaking with T mobile customer service today, I was told it could be the phone or the whole rooting thing...not sure whats going on and I only have three more days to return/replace the phone. Anyone here experienced anything like this?

When it comes to service recognition by the radio and software of the phone, the apn doesn't matter. Think about the apn settings as joining a proxy server; if you notice you are just placing IP, web server addresses and port information in that settings page, and you must be already member of the network (have connection) for these settings to be relevant.
That is why if the apn settings are wrong you will still have service but not receive data.
The issue with one phone displaying LTE right next to another which is not (same provider) comes about how the software for the radio is configured and how well calibrated is the antenna of the phone and the radio processor... And a few other environmental factors too.

New T-mo customer, slow data speed!

Ok, so Im a new T-mo convert and I picked the S5 and prepaid unlimited everything ($80) plan. Im in the San Juan area in PR.
Ive been getting horrible data speeds <1Mbps since day one on the phone. The curious thing is that from 2 am to 6 am for (6 days straight now) speeds jumps to 15Mbps or higher. As soon as 6am ticks I'm back to Edge speeds. What is even weirder is that I swapped the sim card to my Note and started hitting 17Mbps or higher at any time.
I tried the new modem and it didnt work either. I also tried changing APNs to different values and going wcdma mode only and none work. I contacted customer support a few days agoand they said they would fix it but they havent. Since I'm on the 14 day thing, I think I may just return it.
Anyone with similar experience or know what could be going on?

Return it and ask for a new one, I live in Caguas but I work on San Juan, and besides when I'm at the office, where all providers have the same signal issue, I have normal Data Speeds.
I must say that when I'm at home in Caguas, I get great LTE Speeds but in San Juan I have noticed that using 4G instead of LTE gives better download speeds, but from that to the issue you are describing is a great difference, that's why I'd suggest you get a new one during the 14 days.
