[GUIDE][VIDEO][locked BL]Rooting Android 4.4.4; Ver. 14.4.A.0.108 - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

I`ve updated the complete guide by changing the way you have to do these things and making a Video out of it. Thanks [NUT] .

Steps:
Enable DEV. Options and USB-Debugging, PC Companion must be installed AND CLOSED.
Download SuperSU and place it into your internal storage
Download ZU-lockeddualrecovery2.7.154 INSTALLER here, extract it and run Installer.bat.
Use option 3 and follow the instructions
Device will reboot, make shure your device goes into Recovery by pressing vol. up.
In recovery flash SuperSU.zip
Reboot and you're done
Enjoy root
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Busybox is already preinstalled, don`t override it! The APK from the Play Store is useable but don''t tap on install or uninstall, this can result in trouble.

Point 1. You write about downloading TabZ-lockdualrec - why? You have been tested on C6833, it is ZU. Why not to download ZU-lockdualrec and use it? Recovery for ZU is broken or som? Version for TabZ and ZU are the same, have the same build number… confused

this should also work on non C6833 Z Ultras. The. point is i only have the C6833 to test it and the tabz one doesnt need root to work while phils recovery also works for the Z Ultra.
so the TabZ Recovery Installer gives you only a temporary root on 4.4.4 and installs the recovery, which means after reboot the Root is gone (enugh for installing Recovery). so you need to Root it again permamently via the easy Root tool after rebooting and install SuperSU directly after it via Recovery, so that not every app can have root Acess whithout asking you.

using this order all works perfectly.
update to 4.4.4
enable usb debugging
run easyroot bat
reboot
install supersu from play (and update binary when prompted)
run ZU Dual recovery installer bat (from same @[NUT] dl page)
done.. easyroot and supersu (via play) before recovery is a neater option and then no supersu flash is required (plus you have supersu so can grant adb shell access when asked during the recovery flash). You then choose method 1 instead of 3 when flashing recovery ("already rooted with supersu" option instead of the "about to root with towelroot" option).
cheers..

Or you install XZDR with option 3 in the installer menu and have @Chainfire's latest SuperSU flashable ready on your sdcard/internal storage before you do. Then you can flash it the instant you enter recovery for the first time and be done with it

agreed, tested it right now. i`ll change my post, ty.

changes done:
-removed old guide
-completly changed the steps for rooting (old one was working, but this one includes recoverys that are made for ZU)
-new steps are now described in a Video

Supersu 2.01 from market don't update su binary, after dual recovery I prefer flash the supersu update zip from recovery

@Lightbird I see there is a ZU-lockeddualrecovery2.7.141-BETA.installer.zip. Is this newer and should I use it instead of 2.7.128 ?

you can try it, the .132 stucked in Towelroot, thats why you should use .128 instead. However if this one stucks in Towelroot, too and you want to have the newest Version you simply can flash the flashable.zip version after rooting whith the .128.

This message appears if you didn`t extract the files bevore using the .bat file ^^. Try again after extracting the Files in a seperate folder :good:.
If this doesn`t work try to run this as an Administrator (rightklick - run as Admin) (maybe your permission settings block the script loading other files). If you cant run it directly run cmd as admin and navigate to it:
Cd.. = directory up
Cd (folder) = navigate into (folder)
Dir = shows the folders and files

ZU-lockeddualrecovery2.7.145-BETA.installer.zip
successed

Confirmed that .145 is working, no bugs detected.

thank you but isnt there a way for this to work with the att version
hi tell4ever,
the only App that i can add for ATT is the Recovery App
ATT phones doesn't have a separate kernel, so this is unnecessary.
all other Apps should be working too, but i can not test it.
Clarification...

So, just to clarify, this should work fine for AT&T phones as well or do you need someone to test?
I've just been running the commands manually in Terminal on OSX but I wouldn't mind having a tool to save some keystrokes...
0.09 with AT&T Recovery App is online.
AT&T Users please read OP.
"Flash Apps" without "ATT" identification are not for your phone
please give feedback.
can i unlock my bootloader with this. im kind of a noob and just got my hox+. i searched the web for half a day now and just want to be sure what i am doing. is there some kind of tutorial for mac users?

Trying to root with Mac
Hi skdubg.. thanks for making this tool. I am trying to run the Root Install.app to install on my HTC One X+.
It's already unlocked with HTCDev.
When I run the app it says it cannot find the device. I have restarted the phone holding Vol Down to get into bootloader. Is this right?
Not sure if I am missing something here? Note, I'm using a Mac.
Can you help? thanks!
hi,
the "Root Install App" doesn't work at Bootloader Mode
the "ADB push command" works only at Recovery or a loaded Device.
can you please check this?
the next version will reboot automatically into Recovery to Push the files
ok, I think I understand why the Root Install app is not finding the device, because it's using adb and not fastboot. So the root install app should be run when the phone is turned on, not when it's in bootrecovery mode.
Is there any order to installing each component (root, firmware, kernel, recovery)? e.g. Do I have to flash firmware first and then root install?
thanks
a good way i think:
install firmware (hboot)
install recovery
install kernel
install root (or custom Rom --> they are have root)
thanks skdubg!
I successfully installed root and recovery tools..
thanks for your help!
Not sure if related to this or not, but it takes a LONG time for the phone to get ATT signal again after a reboot.
I have a serious problem.
Unlocked the bootloader on HTC website, all ok.
Downloaded the tool, but made a mistake.
Apparently i started to install the kernel instead of the hboot firmware.
Flashed Blade kernel and bricked my phone.
If i just boot the phone, i get stuck on the HTC One screen.
If i boot into bootloader it goes into safety re-lock.
I can unlock it again through Terminal and follow the same steps as per normal unlock.
If i boot into bootloader everything looks OK (s-on), but when i go into recovery, i get TWRP, but there's no recovery files to work with.
Can someone please help me get my phone unbricked??
I do have access to a windows machine if that helps.
Thx
hi,
if you have access to windows, install the correct RUU for the phone to go back to stock.
then you can start the procedure again
there is no file in the download link.

Requirements:
Flashtool 0.9.13 by @Androxyde
XZDualRecovery 2.7.43 BETA or newer.
Current rooted FW version: 14.1.B.1.532 or 14.1.B.2.257.
Special features:
SuperSU integrated in system, FULL ROOT!
XZDualRecovery 2.7.75 BETA (CWM & PhilZ Touch & TWRP) pre-installed;
init.d support (read how to enable)
For both locked and unlocked bootloaders!
In the following guide I suggest you use an external SDCard but that's just good practice, you can use your internal storage or even an USB OTG storage device in TWRP if you like to install, that's no problem!... If you are modding and the likes, best is to have an external sdcard, just for safeties sake.
If you are unable to download torrent files directly, have http://zbigz.com/ do it for you!
How to update to 14.2.A.0.290:
Files:
For C6802: Download C6802_14.2.A.0.290.flashable.zip (Bittorrent: 842MB) and C6802_14.2.A.0.290_Stripped.ftf (21MB)
For C6806: Download C6806_14.2.A.0.290.flashable.zip (Bittorrent: 815MB) and C6806_14.2.A.0.290_Stripped.ftf (21MB)
For C6833: Download C6833_14.2.A.0.290.flashable.zip (Bittorrent: 760MB) and C6833_14.2.A.0.290_Stripped.ftf (21MB)
Save them somewhere you remember;
Due to a little bug inside the updater-script, you need to follow the guide in this post to make sure flashing it works OK. (Only if you downloaded the older version)
Put 'C68XX_14.2.A.0.290.flashable.zip' on (the external) SDcard1;
Put 'C68XX_14.2.A.0.290_Stripped.ftf' inside the Flashtool/firmwares folder;
Create a backup of your phone in TWRP and don't forget to backup the contents of 'SDCard' (the internal storage!);
Install XZDualRecovery 2.7.74 or newer from PC.
In TWRP -> Wipe -> advanced Wipe Tick/Check:
Dalvik-Cache
System
Cache
Data
Then 'Swipe to Right' to make it happen and go back to the TWRP home screen;
Flash 'C68XX_14.2.A.0.290.flashable.zip' in TWRP;
NOTE: do not reboot but go back to the main menu, then go to reboot->power off;
Flash everything in 'C68XX_14.2.A.0.290_Stripped.ftf';
Now reboot to system;
Once you get to the language select screen, reboot to TWRP (no need to finish the guide);
Restore the backup of DATA only, when done go back to the TWRP home screen;
In TWRP -> Wipe -> advanced Wipe Tick/Check Dalvik-cache;
Reboot to system.
The first boot will be slow and after a long wait at the boot animation you will see Android start optimizing the apps on your phone.
Video Guide:
NOTE: This guide is based on an older guide for the Xperia Z1 which has since been updated a few times, but it will give you a general idea.

Enjoy! :fingers-crossed:
Known XZDualRecovery Issues:
Busybox Updater/Installer: If you have XZDualRecovery installed, un-install any Busybox updating app/tool as most if not all of them will install a version of busybox which does not support the lzma compression applets XZDualRecovery depends on. The version installed together with XZDualRecovery is very stable and I have yet to hear anyone complain about it's stability.
How to report errors:
Please, before shouting out "It doesn't work!!1!" or "I lost root!" or even "My phone reboots when remounting /system RW!!" try the following:
Restore any JB 4.2.2 FTF using any means you are familiar with so you can try again.
Root it using any means you are familiar with.
Install XZDualRecovery and then try to update again using TWRP.
If it still fails something from there on: LOGS!!.
NOTE: The important ones can be found in /cache/recovery and in /sdcard1/XZDualRecovery, pack them up and send them to me or attach them to your bug report.
Thank you

Tips and Tricks
Easy switching between locked and unlocked bootloader states!
NOTE: USE TWRP ONLY for this guide.
NOTE 2: You NEED to have XZDualRecovery 2.7.43 or higher to make this work.
Create a backup, including the Trim Area (TA!)
Unlock your bootloader
Restore backup without TA
Create a new backup of your UNLOCKED TA
Restore the previous TA backup to relock your phone.
Done :good:
Now you can switch between locked and unlocked bootloaders quick and painless: no more system wipes and you can basically do whatever you want
How to enable init.d support:
Open a filemanager app and navigate to the location where the XZDualRecovery folder is located and go in to it. Open XZDR.prop as a text file and set dr.initd.active to true.
NOTE: For this ROM it means the init.d script called 99SuperSUDaemon will kick in to action, so it's best to disable (by setting chmod 644) /system/etc/install-recovery.sh for the time being or to clear it's contents.
Done
Downgrading to a 4.2 ROM:
Download C6833_14.1.B.1.532_[NUT].ftf (Bittorrent: 760MB) and flash it using FlashTool. I've also added the FTF to the downloads page on the DevDB tab, this will allow straight downloads as well.
This FTF will allow you to downgrade to .532 without loss of your IMEI :good:
ROM Status: STABLE
Update 1:

Update 2:
C6833 ROM uploaded and seeding.
Update 3:
C6806 ROM now uploading, FTF and torrent file links have been updated.
Update 4:
C6806 ROM uploaded and seeding.
Update 5:
A little bug has been discovered in the updater-script. To be able to flash the one you possibly have downloaded already, follow the instructions in this post to get it to work properly!
I will be updating the packages soon, in the mean time I have updated the OP guide to include this small fix.
Update 6:
Removed the files from the bit-torrent seeder. I'm currently uploading them again now. It will probably take about 30 minutes to finish that, will update again once completed and seeding again.
If you have already downloaded the package, make sure to read 'Update 5' with details on that how to fix yours.
Update 7:
Files have been replaced on the seeder box. There is no need to re-download them if you follow the guide pointed to by 'Update 5'.
Enjoy again!

Why?
Failed
Tried a few times to flash C6833_14.2.A.0.290.flashable.zip in TWRP, but each time it failed in the final step:
Code:
set_perm: some changes failed
E:Error in /sdcard/C6833_14.2.A.0.290.flashable.zip
(status 7)
So I decided to try the flashable zip from jackie099's thread, and that one was successful.

Ah frack, because of this report, I just rechecked my edify script, and even though it was correct typo wise, it is trying to set permissions on a file which no longer exists in the package.
I'll redo the packages soon. Packages have been updated. If you have one downloaded already, follow this little guide to fix yours!
In the mean time, open the flashable ZIP in winzip or winrar, extract META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script
and remove this line:
Code:
set_perm(0, 0, 0644, "/system/bin/ramdisk.stock.cpio.lzma");
Put the updater-script back inside the zip, updating the one there. It should make it flash OK from there on.
Thanks for the report!

Set up flashtool to where it asks you to connect your phone:
Turn off your mobile, then hold Volume down while connecting your usb cable. It will then start flashing.
Holding volume up will put your device in to fastboot mode, FYI
ahh, volume down lol. great, that did the rick
thanks a lot NUT! appreciate your job hehe. great work
oh right, i still have the notification of OTA update to 290 after i flashing your ROM. is there any way to clear it?

I give you credit in first post to make you happy but don't say its copy/paste, because it's not true... And please don't quote the first post, its not good for visibility...

I got it figured out I didn't know I had to manually put it in fast boot mode. Other toolkits I have used do that automatically. You might want to put that in the op.

Hope you're newbie here so will try to guide you step-by-step.
The easiest way is to download stock firmware for Flashtool.
For KitKat you can download 23.0.1.A.0.167 Firmware - this is the latest KitKat before Lollipop.
For SGP621 you can download it here: DOWNLOAD
Now Download FlashTool v0.9.18.6 - not newer e.g. 0.9.19.0 because they need some scripts and give errors. You can download it from HERE
Don't install PC Companion!
Let's start.
1. Download FlashTool from link above
2. Install
3. Go into C:\Flashtool\drivers and run Flashtool-drivers.exe
4. Select components - you only need Flashmode driver so select only flashmode driver and click install
5. Download FTF file and push it into C:\Users\Username\.flashtool\firmwares
6. Make sure your tablet is charged at least 50%!!!
7. Turn off tablet but DON'T CONNET TO PC
8. Run Flashtool (FlashTool if you have 32-bit OS, Flashtool64 if you have 64-bit)
9. Click LIGHTNING like on screen below:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
10. Select flash mode
11. You will see a list with firmwares like on screen below
12.Select firmware in left column and check the boxes: APPSLOG, CACHE, DATA (you see it on screen above in pt. 11)
13. Click FLASH. Don't connect your tablet to your PC.
14. Flashtool will prepare everything - it takes about 1 minute - it looks like on screen below:
15. When flashtool is ready you will se this window:
16. Connect your SGP621 in flashmode - hold VOL- and connect to PC - when the windows closes, you can release VOL- button, but DON'T DISCONNECT YOUR TABLET UNLESS FLASHTOOL WILL WRITE sth like this:
Flash complete. Plug off your device and reboot. That's all!
17. Reboot your Tablet and that's all
thank you so much God bless you <3

Are you sure about 23.0.1.A.0.167 Firmware being the latest KitKat before Lollipop? According to PTCRB there were three (3) KK versions at least certified:
23.0.1.A.3.12
23.0.1.A.4.30
23.0.1.A.0.167
I'm actually "hunting" for the latest KK firmware here: [SGP611] Last KK Firmware anyone?

I had to use version 0.9.25.0. Old 0.9.18.6 was throwing "Processing of loader.sin finished with errors". (Windows 10, x64)
Select Whipe APPS_LOG, B2B, USERDATA (as mentioned, else bootloop).
SGP621_23.0.1.A.0.167_CE successfully flashed.
(Took ~5 minutes. There is a longer break in flash process without any notification in flashtool. Just stay patient)
Rooting:
Had to use KingRoot, EasyRootTool and DoomLord_v4_root where freezing in process.
Backup-Ta worked as described, Servicemenu "Bootloader unlocked: yes"
Afterwards, do not use "Restore TA", it seems to lock you bootloader again, instead:
Flash Stock 23.5.A.1.291 same way
Download and extract ta_poc:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/poc-real-trim-instead-drm-fix-t3552893
Open your 23.5.A.1.291 tft/zip file (rename tft to zip) and extract kernel_S1-SW-LIVE-9C84-PID1-0006-MMC.sin.
Download twrp https://twrp.me/Devices/Sony/ (I used scorpion_windy on lte version, seems to work), name it recovery.img and place it in ta_poc folder
Run DOUBLECLICKME.bat, it will ask you for your kernel and TA backup files and it should automatically detect the twrp file.
When done, you will find a new_boot.img file. This is a combination of your stock boot image, together with your ta partition and twrp recovery.
Flash new_boot.img in fastboot
Code:
fastboot flash boot new_boot.img
Test if device boots to system
Download Magisk (I used 18.0)
Boot into twrp (push volume-up multiple times when Sony logo appears)
Flash Magisk zip
Boot and install Magisk Manager
Result (in my case):
Latest Stock version with twrp 3.0.2 and Magisk (root, root hiding,...)
All keys in service menu are [Key OK][Active].
(For me it shows "bootloader unlock allowed", as if bootloader is locked. But thats hard to believe since its booting with a patched bootloader.)
Ta Restore crashed
had to replace file find.exe in Backupt-TA-9.11\tools with my version from c:\windows\system32
Than it worked, all keys in service menu are [Key OK][Active]
But it seems this is relocking your bootloader. Service menu says again "Bootloader unlock allowed: yes" (don't know about it, I could restore TA on my XZ1c and bootloader stays onlocked)
Flashed 23.5.A.1.291 and afterwards this boot image https://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-tablet-compact/development/kernel-t3472019 for twrp.
Magix 18.0 (through twrp) bootloops!

Advice for creating recovery partition...please!

Hey....bought a refurbished bootloader unlocked Ultra 6806 on latest software, ...and my old tried and tru efforts at getting TWRP fail apparently because I lack the recovery partition.
Can anyone direct me to a kernel/.img link that would do that for me.
Am I asking the right question?!
Thanks
I think you mean c6806
If bootloader is unlocked. Cool
Just flash kitkat ftf with flashtool. And do dual recovery.
Or just try philz recovery try flashing it with rashr
Flash 4.4 correct? Still couldn't install TWRP on rooted kitkat. 'lack of recovery partition'.
Trying to implement this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/xpe...de-root-z-ultra-stock-lollipop-5-0-2-t3094094).
Kingo fails every time on Lollipop).

As stated if your bootloader is already unlocked. Use flash tool and flash a kitkat ftf. Once on kitkat root it, and install nuts dual recovery.
Or you could just root and flash .IMG with recovery which will do all the work.
---------- Post added at 07:06 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:02 PM ----------
When on kitkat and rooted use rashr and flash this
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxU1aYWczltnYV9FSUpoT1lwMkU/view?usp=docslist_api
Its 100% safe but I'm not responsible if you mess up.

Why are you sending him back to KK? If his bootloader is unlocked, he can just go ahead and flash TWRP/CWM/Philz through fastboot/flashtool/QuickIMG/installer. That's the whole point of having an unlocked bootloader.
If you are on the latest software, then the recovery partition should already be there.
The problem that you are probably experiencing is in finding a recovery that is compatible with the partition, the TWRP images over at TWRP.ME are not.
Saatvik Shukla has posted a build of TWRP 2.8.7.0 which can be installed into the partition using the FASTBOOT FLASH RECOVERY [filename] method and can be found at the link below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z-ultra/development/twrp-togari-t3197082
Thanks all
Gonna get at it
Thanks...all went well.root 5.1.1 plus TWRP.
only problem is no write privileges on files.

Rebooting again resets testsigning to on. The driver will continue to work as long as the system don't touch the driver.
If windows trying to update the drivers from microsoft driver catalogue. It might happen that this driver will be forced off because the lack of a signature.
A trigger for this would be if you plugin in a new hardware such as a brand new usb stick or hard disk or whatever you might want to use.
