[Q] How do you keep your Ultra? Naked or Protected? - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

How do you guys keep the Ultra?
Do you use a screen protector? Do you have it in a case or naked?
Iam using the leather case but i want to use it in all its glory. The only issue is that i know its a scratch magnet because of the Anti Shatter screen

naked..

Naked without screen-protector

Protected, because it's so thin and i carry it in my Pockets. It needs a little bit more stability. Whithout you can see what's happening whith your device, when you put a little bit weight in the middle of the screen while having nothing at the back.
Thin device + big size, not a very clever combination, some people broken the Display because of that.

Hardened glass screen protectors front and back, and a thin purple transparent case

Naked but with polymer screen protectors on both sides.

I'm not a fan of cases myself.
For the guys who keep it nude, you are okay with the scratches? The anti shatter film is a magnet

Protected with a tempered glass screen protector by Glass-M. I also swap between the Sony SPA-ACX3 camera attachment case for my Sony QX100 and the Sony CP12 battery folio case for when I'm traveling.

The god awful ASF was the reason why I applied a tempered glass screen protector. It's a bigger hassle to try and remove the ASF as it's glued/laminated onto the glass of the phone. Glass screen protectors (like the ones from Glass-M) also have the added benefit of having an oleophobic coating that's less resistant to wear, as the glass underneath the ASF doesn't have a coasting.

Naked. I can't stand using cases. It's like buying a Porsche and mount some massive plastic bumpers in case I crash. That's not the way to enjoy it! (but I totally understand why people use them)

I have my Z Ultra in my pocket without any protection which I don't normally do with phones but I find due to the size of the phone I need as much as space as I can get and using a case reduces that. I figured that although the phone might look a bit worse for wear it was the only way I'd be able to really use it however so far aside from some cosmetic scratches on the back it looks fine, there's no sign of any damage to the screen.
John

Front and back screen protectors and the device stays in the CP12 charging case 99% of the time. This isn't my primary device though so it's used more as a small tablet at home. Rarely do I actually use it as a phone.

Usingpens and pencils on the screen

Has anyone else found that when using pencils and pens on the screen that they scratch the hell out of their screens. And it is now pssing me off knowing i have really scratched it beauces of doing something they said you can do. Especially since the screen is meant to be scratch resistant.
Yea it's actually an anti shatter film. not so much a scratch resistant layer. I just put a screen protector on top of mine before I started testing out the handwriting thing. once it scratches I just replace it. gotta do some research before doing some of the sketchy stuff. for example, I have yet to try out the phones water proofing. I know it can be done but should I do it as a test? ehh ill probably just take their word for it. lol

Well yeah this is Sony main weaknesses.. but one of their main strength too.. Saw that Xperia Z1 drop test? not a crack on the screen (compared to the S4 for example). Why? well the shatter proof does its job.. but unfortunately, the scratch resistant nature is only embedded on the screen below it.. so like any other phone, please buy yourself a new screen protector. even my previous Gorilla Glass RAZR MAXX is scratched after 8 months of use.. Better protected than never..

I put a gearmaxxx ultra clear screen protector on D1, scratched on day 3 I think, trying to write on the device with a pencil.
Then I got an anti glare no brand screen protector, really good, scratched 5 days ago trying if pencils or metal objects could write under water, as several sites report that as working. Of course it didn't work, but then I obviously scratched the screen protector again.
By then the Chinese glas.t knock off had arrived, so I put that on. Some days later I impressed my dad and my daughter with a pen on it, and she began drawing with the Sketch app.
Wanna know how it ended?
Even the tempered glass got scratched.
Bottom line is, everything get scratched sooner or later.
If you can live with few scratches on your screen and change screen protector every now and then, do as you please, but as far as I'm concerned, I'm not writing on the screen with anything besides my fingers anymore, I'm sick of changing screen protectors, and the original anti shatter film on the device is a pain in the arse to remove if you scratch that.
And if you manage to remove that too, you'll most definitely lose your warranty (other than the Sony logo).

I am almost certain that the shatterproof protector they put on their phones only keeps the shards of the broken glass in, so you don't cut yourself or anything. Shatterproof protectors don't actually stop the phone from breaking, whatever glass Sony is using just must be really tough.

With some plastic on top I'm sure there is some resistance to shatter because it absorbs some of the shock rather than directly to the glass itself..

Possibly yes but a shatterproof sheet itself does not stop the glass to break, despite the misleading name. It merely keeps the shards in when it does break. I'm sure the Z1's sturdiness is more from Sony's strong glass and frame of the phone than the sheet on they put on the screen

Tempered Glass Screen Protector

I have applied a tempered glass screen protector on my Xperia Z Ultra.... perhaps the one I'm using is not of a good quality, it still attracts fingerprints and I find the responsiveness of the touchscreen has become worse, and the screen seems to become more reflective to sunlight than before... A bit regretful for putting this on as I don't feel much improvements over the previous plastic screen protector I was using...
sorry for you dude...please tell us the brand..so that we wont buy it..thanks for the heads up
Wow that sucks I just ordered mine yesterday. Both front and back I hope I don't regret it.

I just ordered one off eBay for the back. I spent money on the front and got the Armorz one. pricey but fits perfectly. attracts smudges to a degree but wipes clean with ease. hopefully the eBay back one I ordered doesn't suck. lol

Same as when I placed one on my ZXU. The brand I bought was Glas.m. It was a total waste of money to tell you the truth. The idea is nice but it just made the XZU screen loose sensitivity. Very noticeable in drawing apps and fps games. I have since removed the front Glas.m and used a regular matte screen protector. I still used the back Glas.m though protector though.

Mine is a Glass.M too ... not impressed at all ...
I got the Glass.M too, and I think it's a verry good protector.
Love the touch sensitivy, no loss on touchscreen at all, there are so much less fingerprints.
However, I think about removing the back one. It make my phone slide on every surfaces. If it's not perfectly horizontal it'll will slide slowy and fall ^^
My phone never fall at all, but since I applied this on the back it falls 4 times
Plus : Having glass.m on the both sides prevents me to use DK30
so I got the glass back piece in and it actually went on with no problems and fits rather well. now what surprised me was as I was applying it, the name brand Armorz front glass got all scuffed up. I was under the impression that it was 9H, yet simple sliding around on regular plastic topped computer desk would scratch it like crazy. I guess it can take a drill bit and razor blades but is not match for dust particles. lol *whomp whomp*

ARMORZ Stealth Extreme R Tempered Glass
Hi guys,
I applied ARMORZ tempered glass over the peeled LCD (yes, I did remove the protection layers). The Xperia Z Ultra, differs from the Z1 by a thin layer of tempered glass between the LCD and the plastic shatter-proof layer. The best way to remove both layers is to apply a lot of heat to the screen and use a very sharp tool like a snap-off cutter (I used the blade alone).
The difference with this astonish hi quality screen protector is huge! Whole new experience!
Hope it help to decide others to encourage and remove the original screen protector.
Regards

Love the feel of the note 3 but think I should protect it

Got my note 3 a few days ago and I'm loving it. I love the feel, the leather back, the slimness. It's great. But I feel I should be protecting it somehow.
I went for an official S View case but it turns out it's not official and i'm not sure I want to spend £50 on a case that doesn't offer full protection.
I've had a browse but can't seem to find one that would not effect the profile of the phone. Does anyone have any suggestions
Thanks.

Dunno about slim cases (I have a UAG), but I'd definitely recommend a tempered glass screen protector. Especially if you were interested in getting the authentic S-view case.
I bought an $8 eBay protector recommended in the tempered glass screen protector thread and have been very happy with it. Cheap way to keep your screen scratch free.
The problem I've found with screen protectors is that I can't apply them for them life of me. They always bubble or get fluff stuck under them.

Try the tempered glass protectors. I used the MIME Ghost Glass for my S4 and i just got one for my Note 3. It just got here like 30 min ago. IF you get one, you don't have to worry about bubbles, they come out on their own in like an hour or 2. Just apply it in a bathroom after running the shower with hot water to get a touch (NOT a lot) of steam in the air. That pulls all the dust particles out of the air as you apply it.
As for the cases, I agree. I like the feel of the Note 3 naked. I also got a case that makes it actually feel more slippery. I love the case as i had the same for my S4 but it is more slippery. I picked up the Spigen Slim Armor case in the metal color.
I have a bumper case, just the frame around the phone. My phone already fell out from the pocket of my pants, when I was changing (frankly I thought I had the phone in my jacket, otherwise would be more careful) onto the wooden floor from about 4 feet and I think I would have already some type of damage, if it wasn't for the bumper case. I like my phone very much, therefore having it in pristine condition is more important than anything else.
Something like this:

Caseology, Spigen, and UAG are the only way to go for cases.

This is going to sound odd, but in order to get a flawless application of your screen protector . . . do it in the bathroom. I always run the shower as hot as it gets for a few minutes prior to trying to apply the screen protector to let the steam pull most of the dust particles out of the air. I also line up the screen protector prior to removing the backing and tape one side so that it functions like a hinge. This way once the backing is removed you do not have to worry about lining up the protector and it basically applies itself from the taped side.

Question might be lame but just to make sure - Can tempered glass be removed if needed or once is applied/glued thats it ?
It will just lift up. No residue left really. Think of it as more sticky and does not bond like a glue. Until you crank one and have to remove it... It's kinda hard to describe. But it comes up as easy as it is to put down
Ordered it. Should be here soon. Do I still need a screen protector with it do you think?

just want to ask something about tempered screen protector. i just bought the spigen glass tr screen protector and had applied it successfully on my note 3 just having one little lint underneath but i dont care too much about it as it cant be seen when the screen is on. but i want to ask is tempered glass has any side effect to my screen ? such as reduce the screen sensitivity as i heard from someone that using tempered glass has negative effect. is it true ?
I haven't noticed any sensitivity issues. To be fair, I put the protector on only a few days after I purchased the phone, but I honestly never noticed any ill effects after installation.
On my S4 or this phone I've never had sensitivity issue with either phone. The Spen works flawlessly with THE MIME Ghost Glass (is only 32mm thick as to Spigens tr glass which is .40mm thick)
Well my case turned up and I love it. Such a well made product.
It makes my phone look kind of Storm Trooper like. I wonder if I can get a vinyl for the front.

Who needs a screen protector? Make stock glass oleophobic

I took off my stock screen protector a while ago and installed a tempered glass screen protector since the stock glass has no oleophobic coating and feels a little sticky. Well my screen protector chipped so I removed it and applied a coat of rain x. It feels great! Still slightly more sticky than gorilla glass but much better than the stock glass. I applied some to the back glass too just for protection under my case. The glass is more shiny and attracts fingerprints less. Any fingerprints are wiped off easier. I highly recommend using rain x instead of a screen protector after removing the stock layer. Now I'm pissed that I spent so much on those stupid screen protectors that are hard to apply perfectly and chip/crack after a few months.
..exactly what tempered screen protector did you buy? You have a link?
Great idea!!
Might use this on my new mobile phone, as I am looking to upgrade to this model.

I started with the one everyone on here recommends, m-glass. I got some crap under the front glass so I ordered the explosion proof front protector off amazon. The front protector chipped near the microphone after a few months and when I removed my case I noticed the m-glass back had cracked. The glass protectors feel nice but are too expensive and not durable imo.

Not sure if you want to be in regular contact with those chemicals: http://goo.gl/yLmN1d
Known eye irritant.
May want to consider something less toxic like http://goo.gl/le5xtW if you want to go down this road.
So, I did this. Looks like a lot of forums have threads about Rain-X yielding positive results.
I also found this post and followed one of the comments.
Not sure if its available everywhere, but for glass coating I use Gtechniq G5. It lasts way longer than Rain X.
Applying is the same for both, tho.. The trick is to clean the screen as good as possible, and use something alcohol-based to make the surface free of residue from the cleaners. Put some G5/Rain X on a cotton patch and apply it in a THIN layer on the glass in "up and down" movements (not circular). Let it sit for a while (2-5min), then apply a new layer the same way on top of the previous layer and let that sit for a while again. Use a clean hot water-moist microfiber cloth to buff it off, and a dry one after.
Let the glass cure for a couple of hours (NO TOUCHING), and your good to go. The G5 coating should last for at least 6 month, and your glass screen should be resistant to dust and fluids. MUCH easier to clean too!

The asf scratch easily, the oliofobic wore off in like three months and at about 2/3 down the screen there was a horizontal dull and almost har d to see through line where my fingers had been swiping in many apps. So I took it off about a year ago.
Without its a nightmare. Its completely dull. There is no finish to the glass due to that the asf needed the rough surface to bond to. I have been using Gtechnic kit and it does very well. Its a product most used in sports cars and airplanes but it can be used to anything you like as long as it sticks to the surface.
..But not enough. Probably the best solution would be to have proper buffing equipment and buff the surface until its smooth as crystal glass.
Anyhow I tried a set off those hardened glass protector and thats what im using at the moment. The phone is now two years old so I dont really care much about it. If it dents it dents, if the glass cracks it cracks. Im not spending money on it any longer.

Edit: Oh yeah I forgot to mention the mocolo glass panels also add a bit of ...or very much to make the phone much more rigid! The z ultra is very easy to bend in half but with them mounted its much much more rigid and harder to bend. It feels more like a premium device.

its a common question. As I understand the touch sensitivity is not an issue when applying screen protector onto the asf. So you should be fine.
And Yes typicly rainx should work. But the oleophobic wont wear of the glass screen protector.. not what I have noticed at least.
