Verizon LG G3 switching to 3G - Verizon LG G3

Noticed for the last couple of days that the phone will switch to 3G when I know there is an LTE connection. Switching it into Airplane Mode and back kicks in LTE again. This happens frequently. I know there aren't many Verizon G3 users yet but I'm curious if anyone else is having this problem.

Could you post a picture of your back cover? I know people are wondering if it has Qi charging or not.

In regards to the 3G issue, you can try updating the PRL and see if that fixes the problem. I have similar issues with other devices. It deals with the SNR on the device. Most of the time the LTE signal is far lower than the 3G so it will switch.

What is that white looking thing under the two NFC contacts? is that metal or just something on the case?
Basically, does QI work out of the box?

I have two QI Nokia Chargers are home and it won't charge on either. No idea what the white thing is.

So 4G LTE is not good on this device Alla note 3

re
the two contacts on the back are for nfc.. if it had four it would support qi wireless charging.

Let's stay positive here lol..

This has been discussed with other phones. When the phone is performing actual phone operations (calls, texts, and other such communications), it is using 3G. Some manufacturers actually make it indicate this is happening with the switch back and forth. I've seen phones updated so it no longer does this because people assume it's a problem with the phone's reception.

Are you using VZW or AT&T? (your user info states AT&T). Most AT&T areas other than major cities and suburbs is not a 4g LTE connection, its HSPA, so your spectrum for your area may not be as strong. Secondly going to your local brick and mortar store and getting a new SIM is always a good starting point and one of the easiest possible fixes.

I'm using Verizon. My profile hasn't been updated.

Oh Boy
I have noticed this happening very often Im in the same office where I used all my LTE Verizon phones in the same office and never had this problem of signal switching to 3G. Not good.
Update: I've noticed that if I switch from Global to CDMA LTE the 4G lte signal stays.. I'll keep my fingers crossed and update.

I did that also, ended up doing it again. I returned my LG G3 and return to the HTC One M8. I'll miss the G3 camera but the lag really bothered me.

Status bar drop down lag, swiping lag, recents lag. I don't mean data connection, LTE speed, just talking about how slow the UI feels.
I'm too impatient to wait for the bootloader unlock. Once it gets unlocked I might come back, but i'm used to the lag free HTC One m8.

There must be an issue with a certain batch or something, I really have zero lag.

I have this issue as well, phone just randomly drops to 3g when I pull it out of my pocket. S5 right beside it, stays on 4g

This is happening to me too and is incredibly frustrating. I only got the G3 because my Moto X was destroyed by a roller coaster, but in areas where my Moto X easily kept 4G my G3 keeps dropping down to 3G, forcing me to fix it by activating airplane mode. I'm wondering if I should return it for a new one, or if this is a software issue that is affecting all phones. I have 13 days left to decide, but if this is affecting a wide range of users I may pick a different phone.

Stop me from jumping....

I just sold my HTC Rezound and got my Razr Maxx from someone locally only about 5 days ago. In short, I miss my Rezound.
Before anyone jumps down my throat, let me explain. I am basing this solely off my experience at work where I spend 40+ hours of my week. Other than that, I really like this phone and want it to work out for me.
In my office here at work, I have always had bad reception with Verizon, regardless of the phone. It's just the way that this building is and the fact that there isn't a Verizon tower close enough to get good reception. Supposedly they are going to install a Verizon tower in our parking lot, but who knows when or if that will really happen.
With that being said, my Rezound held 4G for most of the day, albeit barely. But it did for most of my day and when it dropped 4G, the transition to 3G was pretty seamless.
With my Maxx, I am having major problems holding 4G or connectivity at all several times throughout my work day. If I open the Play Store or apps like Facebook, it will say no connection even when the 4G icon is visible. Then it will turn white at times too.
To its credit, I get good reception outside of work and at home which is true for every Verizon phone that I have owned (Incredible, Thunderbolt, Charge, Rezound).
So what gives? Without going back to a Rezound, what are my other options? The Nexus is much worse in this department correct?
Any advice would help, thanks!
Nexus is horrible in reception department. I know exactly what you mean with the white 4G no connection issue. I get it all the time too...even with 4G showing full bars. Also when I open the browser its just white and froze.

So, it's not just me? LOL
It's getting pretty ridiculous. Today I can barely do anything with it at work, it's not holding much of anything.
Is this a known network issue? Because if not, I will have to dump this phone unfortunately.
Yeah I don't know if it's the battery or what but 4G reception seems hit or miss on my Razr Maxx, it usually works great but in fringe areas it's shakier than I'd like.
That said, I use my office's wifi (where 4G reception sucks) and keep my phone on 3G unless I need to download things. So it isn't a huge issue.
I can't go back to a smaller battery, though.
Just as an update, the reception is embarrassingly bad today. I can't connect to anything data related. Connection keeps going in and out.
My Rezound would connect to everything daily. Only problem is that I don't want another Rezound lol.
Decisions, decisions....
the nexus has horrible signal issues, don't get one. as far as the maxx and signal/4g i get 10x better signal strength than i had with my rezound or nexus. if you want, install the .209 ics leak. it gave me much better 4g reception and speeds.
could also be you just do not have good verizon service where you are and no phone will fix that.

I definitely don't have good Verizon service where my office is located as I said in the OP. But, even with that said, my Rezound always held a data connection, and mostly 4G at that.
I have no idea why this phone with supposed better radios can't match that. It's very, very disheartening.
I will try the ICS leak. Is the .209 one the one where you can't go back to stock if you wanted to? That might be an issue for me.
Thanks!

There is none that they know of. I went into a Verizon store tonight and they installed a new sim for me.
I have had strong signal since then, but I'm not at work and I usually get good signal at home.
If I don't have good signal tomorrow at work I will just have to face the sad reality that this phone won't play nice at work. Then I will have to make a decision from there.

Have you tried simply turning 4G off? Basically, go to the network settings and turn it to CDMA only, instead of CDMA+LTE. 2-3 bars of 3G is better than 0-1 bars of 4G. At least while you're at work.
Are you sure it's not a defective unit?

It might possibly be, but I'm not leaning towards that as I'm getting good reception and connection at home.
It's only happening at work where nobody gets good Verizon signal to begin with. Only problem is my rezound was holding enough signal and not dropping but this phone is dropping.
My conclusion so far is that the rezound holds weak signals better and the MAXX just drops them.

Verizon LTE

Does anyone else have problems with mobile data dropping frequently?
My thunderbolt and rezound act the same. At work, the signal strength reported in the about phone screen fluctuates between -63 & - 73dbm. Ill lose mobile data countless times daily. If you go to the settings to try and toggle mobile data, it's greyed out and says turning on...
So frustrated with this behavior

Verizon probably have a weak signal in your work place.
This happens. Also, LTE is known to stop allowing traffic (at random) and require a turning off/on of Mobile Data (especially when using constant data for long periods of time).
It's annoying.
Different places - happens more than others.
I have also been experiencing issue with Verizon data connections as of late. I have a hard time even locking onto 3G with my Rez. But my other phones no issues, I am now on my 4th Rezound in over a month since having this issue.

Compared to my unfortunate experience with 4G devices, any of my other 3G phones hold onto and got better locks on 3G than compared to the past Rezounds. Now the latest rezound finally does get a data lock the prior 4 did not.
I've got no 4g issues. Almost never drops. I'm in southern California.

This issue has been addressed a lot in many forums for the rezound, tbolt, gnex, and pretty much every 4g phone out. For some phones its not that bad. I think its software based cause once I rooted and s-off I've never had it happen to me again. The gnex I think they narrowed down to combination of software and hardware issues. I've been running ice roms since I rooted. I've been through 3 replacements, all did it, all had new Sims all new phones (not refurbished).
Here's a post I followed when it was happening to me. I've done lots of research on this and I truley do think its software based (mostly because Verizon won't admit its their network)
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
It's a network. If you have -65 -75 dbm on 1xrtt that doesn't mean you have the same signal strength on lte. LTE signal is different from 1xrtt or evdo. The reason that you lose date quite often is because the LTE signal is very poor in your location especially if you are indoor. to improve LTE signal wilson electronics has very good amplifier, that calls sleek 4g-v get it. It may improve the signal by 20 dbm.
There is a few threads on this and no resolutions. There is some kinda of problem with the network that Verizon isn't owning up to. There is a bunch of forums posting the problem as well, where the 4g just drops off and then comes back on. Prior to the begining of June if my 4g dropped out it would go to 3g. Now the places I had solid 4g I am getting it on and off every minute or so. I went down to verizon and the girl said she is having problems with her Tbolt. We changed out the sim and she said she could get me a new phone but to me it sounds like the network if so many people across all phones are having problems. I am going to call Verizon probably this weekend or monday cause I am tired of being on 3g all the time and not being able to use the 4g is driving me nuts. Things are so slow. Arg.

From all the responses, Galaxy S3 is the best signal people are getting to date. Better than the one xxx and the Motorola Razor Maxx. And HTC and Motorola have been known to have the best reception. Go figure.

Why all the complaints ? This is a lot to do with user error

I'm stunned at the constant complaints... I believe half of.. everyones issues are due to screwin around and f"n up their phones ,not reading stickies ,,rules , not.knowing...compatibility
The other half is probably defective devices NOT all of us have issues I've had none

I really haven't tinkered with much of anything on my phone and I find the most recent OTA to be MUCH MUCH buggier than the previous version. Before the update I never had Sense crash or any other programs crash. Now they happen once or twice a week (sometimes several in a day). Add that to the fact that I am not S-OFF and I have a loathing hatred for this most recent update.

Sorry, but I'm not convinced that my text, roaming and dropped call issues are solely due to the upgrade. You guys can keep screaming that all you want. And I'm not saying that there aren't instances where that's the case. My wife has a shift and isn't experiencing these issues. I've also read about other evo owners with two phones or other sprint phones in their household -- none of which are displaying the same problems.
Again, I'm not saying the network upgrade isn't causing any issues, but it's a bit aggravating to see people post that in every thread containing an issue that can even remotely be attributed to the upgrade like it's gospel.

For those not aware...the EVO LTe is set up out of the box to work on LTE and Enhanced CDMA (for lack of better term/knowledge) Also know as Network Vision, or the upgrades.
In cases where an older phone connects and the EVO LTE does, I have confirmed the EVO LTE is connecting to a network type called ehrpd. This network is not yet active in most cities. The older device confirmed to be connected to CDMA and receiving normal 3g.
This is the reasoning behind changing the network mode to cdma only, as many of us have seen that it forces the phone on to CDMA and not ehrpd.
I hhonestly have no idea what I am doing, but this is what I have found in my hours of testing side by side with older devices. From what I can tell every LTE device Sprint carries has this issue, but the other devices appear to lack the ability to switch.
There are also other issues that can contribute to texts and data.
This theory also works in reverse. If I am in an LTE area and on cdma only data and texts are wonky and I have to switch back.
Moral of the story...handoff could be seriously jacked up. I remember Verizon and ATT having similar issues during buildout. You would think someone had figured it out by now.

A lot of the data/sms/call signal issues can be attributed to the current state of network upgrades, though it's obviously impossible to say 100%. In my experience, the network-related things have worked fine from day 1 (July 19th). That said, I have noticed actual system bugs. For example there was a time when I was using Talk (I hardly ever SMS anymore, Talk is way better IMO) and the text in the app became just a jumbled mess of pixels. Took a reboot to fix but it was still weird. And a friend of mine who got his Evo LTE a couple of weeks before me, his phone just started spontaneously overheating all of a sudden yesterday. We suspect a rogue app getting stuck in a loop, but still that's not a good sign; it should have been caught by the OS and at least thrown up a message to kill the offending application. Again, a reboot fixed it but I'm not really keen on that being an actual solution as opposed to a temporary workaround.

The specs sounds quite amazing for the follow up to the Optimus G and I'm glad Sprint will be selling the G2.
I've been checking this out on youtube ...and yes she's a beast
I have a question for LG Optimus G owners.
How are the radios in the LG phones? Its seems everyone agrees that Motorola are the best. my HD gets a lot better reception than my Samsung's got. How would you guys rate LG's reception?

You will get no useful data by asking that question here. Instead, look for reviews directly comparing the reception of devices in a controlled environment using a Femtocell.

Really, people can't give their own assessment of the signal strength they get? I'd find that more useful, getting input from people's everyday use then a test. It's like benchmarks. Actual day to day use is much more relevan than a test.
Just got this phone last week because my s3 died. The s3 always stayed on 4g lte everywhere i went in town. This phone goes from 3g to 4g if i go from room to room in my house. It's. Very annoying but i have 14 days to trade this phone back in. I really like this phone over the s3 but the reception it's not on point like the s3. That's just my experience so far.

Yup, that's true. I've noticed that as well. I have the LGOG while there's 3 GS3 in the family. The GS3 holds onto the 4G LTE connection much better while LGOG drops it. It also doesn't reconnect quickly; I've had to toggle airplane mode so that I can reconnect to 4G LTE. I shouldn't have to do that. If the service it available, it should stay connected.
My LGOG doesn't connect to the 4G towers that are in Baltimore City (yes, I do have it set for 4G/3G), I have updated the profile and PRL multiple times, toggled airplane mode on and off multiple times and it stays on a 3G data connection, sometimes the 3G connection is so slow downloads and uploads take a long time. I'm hoping under SoftBank's ownership, SoftBank can vastly improve Sprint's 3G and 4G networks before the G2 comes out. I would love to switch from the OG to the G2 and have better 3G and 4G network performance than what Sprint currently has.
I'm happy with Sprint's new Unlimited Guarantee for Life but would like to see faster and more reliable data speeds on the 3G and 4G networks.
Thanks for the replies. If GS3 have better data connection than LGOG then I may steer clear of it and possibly get the Moto X Developer Edition on VZW.

People can, and have, but at best you're getting limited sample size in unrelated markets to your own with wiggle room for signal attenuation depending on the person's grip, weather conditions, or the structure they're residing in. In short: just about as useful as testimonials for homeopathic remedies.
At worst, you're dealing with different phones reporting different bars for the same signal strength with the potential for different carriers, different protocols (Wimax/LTE/HSPA+), different modem drivers, faulty 3G/4G handoffs in addition to everything I listed previously.
I really hope they decide to throw the G the 4.2 rom thats running on the G2, the features looks pretty nice. The phone itself looks pretty sweet, I like the idea of having the volume buttons on the back. I wonder if LG has improved the camera on the G2?

No, me thinks. Some people live under the cell and have upper quality signal 100% of time and can't tell and difference and could care less if its Moto or Coolpad
Others live in sorts of suburbs, farms, countryside and their signal is poor no matter if it Moto or LG or Nokia.

All 4 major US carriers will be carrying the G2 when it hits the States though i don't know if anyone has listed a specific date. (most seem to think early September so that it is top of the heap for a while being king fish with the Snapdragon 800)
My only concern so far is this: I like to run occasionally and I wear my phone in one of those sports arm bands... if the combo power/volume buttons are on the back, won't they be pressed against my arm and therefor prone to accidental presses? They aren't exactly flush with the back of the phone.

The volume buttons need to be pressed pretty firmly as I understood it, and the Power button is surrounded on the sides, thats how it will not be pushed down on a table etc. Even so, I bet it would be easier to accidently push the buttons when they are on the sides of the phone.

The radio wasn't -bad-, but Motorola is certainly far better. The trick was to disable scanning for LTE (CDMA only mode), really gave a good boost to the OG's signal and battery, might I add. Since I don't currently live in a 4g area, I had no use for LTE

Well, Verizon and At&t are getting theirs Sept 12th & 13th. Let's hope Sprint's and T-Mobiles version isn't too far behind.

From what I hear the original LG Optimus G had a great radio. 3G performance was of the top devices on Sprint while the 4G ranked just a bit behind GS3. We'll see how this device goes. Motorola is really good with EvDo technology and owned a lot of Sprints legacy equipment on the cell towers. I still haven't seen any device out perform Motorola's Photon in terms of network performance.

Awful reception everywhere?

Hello everyone,
First post on XDA woo!
Anyway. I've been with android for since the Galaxy Nexus and continued using the nexus line up until the Nexus 5. Recently I got bored of stock android so I wanted to try out the LG G3. I'm currently on T-Mobile and was able to get a Verizon LG G3 basically for free. Popped my SIM card in, set up a T-Mobile APN. It worked fine. However. I have NO signal almost anywhere I am at all times (school, home, when I'm out and about). Could this be because of my APN? Is it a faulty phone? Because I'm using t-mobile on a Verizon phone?
Thanks in advance guys!
(Ironically enough, I have decent signal in the screenshot. Haha, I promise it's a miracle)

Welcome to the XDA forums!
Actually your screenshot is showing only one bar of signal
What do you have the "Network Mode" set to? (Under the "System Select" settings.)
The 3 options are Global, LTE/CDMA, and LTE/GSM/UMTS.
For T-Mobile you probably need the LTE/GSM/UMTS mode.
Here is a thread where someone else set up their VS985 on T-Mo's network.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/general/factory-unlocked-lte-t-mobile-t2828543
Thanks for the warm welcome!
I checked my mobile settings and it was set to 'Global'. However when I tried switching it to either of the other two, options I get this error message (shown in the picture below).
I read the thread you posted. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything to help my specific case. I did find out that this phone reads a Band 4 LTE from T-Mobile. I went online and it seems that my area doesn't get Band 4 coverage for LTE. However even on my Nexus 5 I never got LTE because I think my data plan only, covered up to HSPA. Could this be a problem?
Thanks for the help.

Whoops. Forgot the screenshot. I don't know why but it's not letting me upload it.... Hmm. I'll just quote what it says.
"The network is not available. You can try global mode to see if alternate networks are available. Do you want to set network to global mode?"

I use a VS985 on T-mobile, so I would offer my 2 cents. The only LTE band it supports for T-mobile is band 4, so if it is not offered in your area, you won't get LTE, but you can still get H, which is still quite fast. Your APN setting is correct. The signal bar for T-mobile is always low, usually 1-2 bars, but the LTE does not seem to be affected by it. I am in the Bay Area, and I typically get around 25Mbps and can get up to 57Mbps when at late night. I think it has to do with T-mobile network than the phone. In fact, I get slightly better signal on G3 than my Nexus 5.
Hmm. I am out of ideas. I mean, my Nexus 5 got great signal throughout my daily routine. Now the LG G3, with the same SIM card and data plan, gets NO signal. Not just BAD signal. I mean NONE. I'm starting to think it may be a faulty hardware problem? I might try and return it and try my luck with another phone. What do you guys think?

I noticed a drop in signal strength when I flashed to Lollipop... Long story short I hated Lollipop and with the radio not as good just Flash back to 10B and setting it up now and will leave it there. I never had any issues with 10B
Someone here on XDA mentioned that the Nexus5 supports band 2 LTE, which T-Mobile uses increasingly as it "'re-farms" it's old gprs towers. I know the G3 doesn't, and I am pretty sure the Nexus5 doesn't either, but if the other poster was correct that could explain your observations.

I have Nexus 5 too, and that phone supports every band in the US including LTE band 2. T-mobile main LTE band is 4 but in some areas they use band 2, which is not support by G3. If you still have your Nexus 5, install LTE Discovery from Play store and you can check which LTE band you are on. If band 2, then you will need to sell your G3. Or I can sell my Nexus 5 to you, haha.
One more thing, I was playing around the Network mode on my G3, while it makes no difference in LTE reception, "LTE/GSM/UMTS" gives better 3G reception, so that is the mode you want your G3 to stay at.
Alright. So I tried the 'LTE Discovery' app. Unfortunately I couldn't learn anything as I don't actually recall ever getting LTE in my area (except at my fathers workplace a good ways a way. Probably since there is a cell tower right next door. Haha) Anyway. I'm thinking that the band receptors are my problem. I'm considering maybe returning this Verizon G3 and buying the T-Mobile G3 variant instead. Do you guys think I'll see any improvement?
Sent from my VS985 4G using XDA Free mobile app
Not if you are in a T-Mobile band2 LTE area. Even the T-Mobile G3 does not support band2 LTE. No LG G3 does.
It does support the high band, band21 I think, which is still more common for T-Mobile than band2. The vs985 doesn't support T-Mobile high band LTE. So, getting the T-Mobile G3 might help. Just remember that higher frequency bands tend to not penetrate buildings as well as lower frequency bands.
I looked at that LTE Discovery App... I would not leave that on your phone. It's a data miner.
Needs access to...
Device and App history
Location
Phone
Photos / media / files
Device ID and call info
Really all that. I don't think so. I would not install it at all. Just saying.
Some if these apps are crazy for what they want access to. I stay away from them.
