[Q] Verzion Z2 Tablet LTE USA - Xperia Z2 Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the international SGP521 LTE (castor) running smooth on
CM11 nighlies on T-Mobile and ATT.
I have been looking at the official US version of the Z2 LTE- exclusive
to Verizon. In the past - Verizon has locked the bootloader - and made
it difficult to run CM11 on their branded devices.
Has anyone worked on the brand new Verizon branded Sony Z2 LTE tablet?
Can the bootloader be unlocked directly from Sony?
Will the CM11 castor nightly load on this version?

This is what I'm getting. This is my first Sony device, so I'll wait for the experts to chime in before I go any further.

Did Sony issue you a bootloader unlock code?
Was this the message from the fastboot oem unlock 0xNNNNNNN?
The normal sony device flow is consistent across their devices:
get device drivers working from sony or flashtool (fastboot and ADB)
get the bootloader unlocked from sony
download PA Gapps,CM11 zip, and SuperSU to the SD card
extract the boot.img from the CM11 zip
flash the boot.img to the boot partition
reboot recovery
full wipe from the recovery
reboot to recovery and flash the zips from the SD card
reboot into system
If the bootloader won't unlock then everything else goes out the window.

Just picked up the US Sony Verizon Z2 tablet.
The model number is SGP561.
First impressions are great hardware.
SGP521 plus extra bands and CDMA.
Insane amount of bloatware.
Sony bloatware. Verizon bloatware. Bloatware on Bloatware.
I am not holding my breath for a Google Play version either.
I will try the Sony bootloader unlock - but I don't have high expectations.

Sony will issue a bootloader unlock.
But the device will not unlock with the issued code.
When you check the service menu settings- the device is unlockable.
No bootloader unlock means a difficult path for custom recovery.
Too bad this is the exclusive z2 tablet version release for the states.
If you have a GSM carrier (T-Mobile or ATT) buy the international SGP521 (castor)
from somewhere else like Amazon and roll the dice on warranty service.
Sony has been great with releasing Z2 tablet kernel sources but I guess
they don't really care about restricting customers in the US.

I just got one too and expected this outcome because it's Verizon
How do you get to the service menu with no dialer?
-Collin-

The directions are on the sony developer site
under the bootloader unlock pages.
Select the Z2 tablet non-wifi.
Its unusual- you have to go to the contacts app and then
click on white space on a specific page to bring up a hidden service app.

Thanks for that...definitely a bit strange. Would have taken me about 10 years to figure that out
Bad news on both fronts. Bootloader unlock allowed: no. LTE bands 4 and 13 (Verizon's two bands), meaning they disabled all the others. I had hopes of using this on T-Mobile at some point, but alas I should have known better.
Thanks, as always, Verizon My service provider is starting to feel like the Seinfeld skit where they try to quit the gym.
-Collin-

I was contemplating buying the Z2 on verizon. So I get it seems like you cant unlock the bootloader but is it difficult to achieve root? I just want to be able to remove the Verizon apps. Also any feedback on this tablet would be appreciated

Root is not an issue. I've successfully rooted both firmwares.

Has anyone successfully converted their SGP521 Verizon Xperia Z2 Tablet to using stock Sony firmware & retained Bravia Engine & Camera quality? I'd love to stop having to wait on Verizon for firmware & remove their apps.

Sure thing,
The easiest way I've found was to use Kingroot to root your Z2 Tablet. (open and run kingroot to actually achieve root) afterwards if you prefer Supersu you will need to flash a custom recovery. To do so, activate USB debugging and connect your tablet to your PC via USB. Download xdualrecovery 2.8.26 for Tablet (should be the second one from top if downloading from http://nut.xperia-files.com/path/XZDualRecovery/XZDualRecovery_2.8.26). Extract the contents to your desktop and click the install.bat. When given options as to which method you wish to install custom recovery with choose method 2 (Install with superuser) and follow the on screen prompts and grant permission on your tablet (when selecting option 2 a script will initiate on your PC and advise you to grant root on your device. Simply unlock the device and grant permissions to continue). Once done your tablet will reboot to custom recovery. Reboot the system and install supersume and run the application. It will remove kingroot and install Supersu. When completed it will automatically open Supersu (it may prompt you to update the binaries... If this does happen DO NOT click TWRP as it will reboot to recovery and do nothing for you! Simply click Normal and let it do its thing and you should be done!!! :victory: all that's left to do is reboot your tablet to remove kingroot from the appdrawer if it's not already removed. If for some reason Supersume is not working properly then reinstall kingroot and retry Supersume again.
I forgot to include the link, for some odd reason I can't upload files. anyways I've also included the files for xposed installer just in case you want xposed on lollipop. Just be sure to make a backup after installing the framework through recovery as some modules are incompatible and cause the tablet to be stuck in a bootloop. That way you can restore if you have any questions ask and I'll help out as much as I can

Yeah no problem sir. Just trying to help out. I went scouring the interwebs for methods and didn't find any luck with lollipop. Only methods worked with Kitkat but I didn't have the ftf for Kitkat so was stuck with lollipop. But just follow my directions and it should work just fine. If link goes dead let me know asap and I'll upload them again as well as make a mirror. Let me know how things go

[Q] Xperia Mini Pro Questions

Hello
Just purchased a SK17i Xperia Mini Pro Black Version that is locked to 02 (UK network). I am obvously new to all this stuff but do have a basic understanding but here are some questions:
1) I am thinking of waiting until Android 4.0 is Officially released by SE to update my phone (btw, anyone know when the update is coming). Was wondering when I update will I still be able to root my phone?
2) When I root (if I can) I want to install Set CPU to overclock my phone. However I have heard this drains batteries? Is this true and if so how can I make my phone faster?
3) I need to unlock my phone. Can this be done for free after rooting? If not, can someone link me to the cheapest place I can get this unlocked from?
Thanks in advance to anyone that answers
Hey dude,welcome to XMP family.
1)According to Xperia Blog,XMP will get the ICS update in the end of May or early June, after the first wave for arcS,neoV and ray.I don't know whether we can root it on official ICS or not,but I think to get a rooted phone is easy once you unlock the bootloader, and besides, there are so many developers here.
2)When it comes to overclocking, apparently it would cause battery drain faster. But with my experience,I hardly feel its difference on SE stock Rom.As for custom rom like FXP's,which I has used for a while,it drains about 2~3% per hour while idle(drop speed is two times than stock.)
3)Certainly you can unlock your phone for free, see this thread & tutorial. But it should be noticed that once you unlock it then you may invalidate your warranty.
Mine is on FXP CM9(ICS) and it's kind of laggy, but I can't tell it's because of the ICS rom or existed bugs.As SE said,we may not have the same experience like Gingerbread if we update to ICS.

Hello mate, thanks for the great post
I think I will leave stock ROM once updated actually, seems to be running fine atm as it is.
I think I will still update to the official ICS when it comes out as does look worth it.
Just about no. 3) I think your talking about after rooting, the process to get custom ROMs by unlocking the bootloader? I was talking about the network? lol
Unless I'm mistaken?
Thanks again

There is no way to get your phone unlocked from a network for free but WontanServer offers an unlocking for $15. You can try that out. Just type WontanServer in Google and click the 1st link. WontanServer is legit and won't steal your money
Though as a warning you might not be able to update to ICS as it also might unlock your bootloader. Just double check, as I am not 100% sure. Also it will void your warranty

What do you mean by updating to ICS will unlock my bootloader? Isn't that a good thing? Don't mind about warranty, can have that sorted out but don't understand the bold line mate

good thing in the sense? If you don't bother about warranty then you can try custom ROM ics.but the problem is some bugs are not fixed by developers they will take time.main bug is camera not working..i am using ics so just check k? Good luck

He meant that the Wotanserver network-unlock method might unlock your bootloader (which it does). This bootloader unlock, whilst giving you access to custom ROMs etc, might not behave with official SONY updates (such as ICS) - I'd link you for proof but I'm not allowed to due to my low post count .
Also, Google 'Omnius Unlock'. They will unlock your phone for free over the next few days (Easter promotion). I'm not sure how reputable those guys are though so you'll want to check.
Thanks for that Omnius Lock thing, looks great and will check it out
So, if I unlock it I may be unable to upgrade to 4.0? That is a bit stupid to say the least? Anyone on an Xperia that was unlocked then ugraded to 4.0? Did it become locked again?

If your phone's bootloader is unlocked you can not recieve any official update through Sony as it will brick your phone but you can install a ICS ROM.

Well I'm not sure about 'stupid', you'll have to weigh it up. If you look in the development section, there's already a very useable version of ICS (look for MiniCMSanwich), which is potentially better than Sony's bloatware-infused and themed version (not to mention probably unrootable) due in a couple of months.
I think it's mainly FOTA bricks that happen (over-the air updating from Sony), and some bootloader unlocks allow for this by just patching the bootloader to make it seem unlocked (any SETool unlock will do this). So there are a number of options.
Be careful also of some bootloader methods stripping the DRM keys, these are used by Sony services like TrackID, which will cease to work (permanently) following a bootloader unlock.
Edit: There's a distinct difference between a network unlock and a bootloader unlock, the former will nearly always also execute the latter, but the latter can be done by itself (obviously only on unbranded phones). The method of getting a custom ROM is basically network unlock > bootloader unlock > root > install custom kernel > install custom ROM. Root can be done before the unlocks, I believe.
I'm new to all this too, only trying to explain because I know how much of a total pain it was to work it all out .

So if I do unlock through the Wotanserver place, my bootloader will be unlocked but I wouldn't be able to get official ICS, but a just as good if not better copy? Is the ROM fully stable as in does everything function fine? I have heard of an ICS ROM which stopped HD recording on Xperias. Does this have any such problem?

And just generally, can I add that this is the way to get MiniCMSanwich ROM on my XMP:
Root (zerg's software) (not needed but useful so might as well do it then)
Unlock Bootloader (from SE's website or the link which hopefully the above poster/someone else gives me)
Kernel Installation (Flashtool)
Finally, flash the ROM and Gapps using Clockwork Mod Recovery

It is the same unlock method, just everything brought to one place by that app maker.
Rooting your phone before custom ROM installation is not needed, because old ROM(stock) gets deleted anyway and custom ROMs include root already.

Depends how you update. Just don't update with ota or pc companion.
1 Downgrade to 4.4.2
2 Root phone
3 Install recovery for locked bootloader
4 Flash rooted 4.4.4 zip in recovery
5 latest firmware and root remains
I am new to Sony devices (been a Samsung guy for years). I have had my Z2 less than a fortnight but already I'm itching to root it etc, problem is it seems a lot more complicated than Samsung devices. I was always switching between roms on my S4/note 2. I am on the latest firmware and would like to root it to be able to use xposed but I'm scared of messing it up and as the phone is under warranty don't want to end up with a paper weight.
Has anyone done a detailed tutorial for newbies like myself?
Thanks in advance

It's not really that hard and there are also of resources online that can guide you.
1 Downgrade to 4.4.2 is required as noone had found a vulnerability with 4.4.4.
2 Root phone
For step 1 and 2, Have a look at this http://www.xda-developers.com/android/how-to-root-the-sony-xperia-z2-xda-developer-tv/
3 install recovery for lock bootloader
Have a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2785598
4 install a 4.4.4 zip through recovery. I recommend this one as its basically stock http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/development/stock-4-4-4-23-0-1-0-167-bug-free-t2929402

It depends on how you want to root, you can root and permanently void your warrentg or you can root and keep your bootloader locked

[Development] Wanna Team Up?

Bla Bla:
I have recently bought this device. The hardware seems to be all nice but software, not so good. There are tons of improvements that need to be done on the software end. I have been waiting for someone else to take an initiative up until now, but it seems everyone else has been doing the same thing and as the device is new int he market, the XDA Threads have been practically dead and they are going to stay like that if noone starts working. So, lets tickle this lady.
What We Need:
Its obvious, but I will state that anyway.
Root and Recovery
Locked Bootloader
Unlocked Bootloader
Kernel
Repacked (With Custom Ramdisk including Recovery, Disable RIC, Insecure ADB, A few Tweaks, etc.)
Compiled (Need sources for that, so lets put this on hold for now)
ROM
Stock (Rooted, Recovery, Tweaked, Optmized, Debloated, Deodexed)
Custom (Something Like This)
Progress:
Obviously, it must be a Top to Bottom approach, but I am an idiot, so, I am following Bottom to Top, actually because thats my forte and I need help with others.
Root and Recovery
Locked
Unlocked
Kernel
Repacked
Compiled
ROM
Stock (Done)
Custom (Halfway Done)
So, folks lets join hands together and start this thing. I welcome all Developers, Beginners, Contributors, Reviewers, Haters, Bullies, Killers, simply anyone and everyone who is willing to help.
I am so happy to see someone actually do custom ROM for this device. I love Sony and I love this phone so much !
Finally there is hope coming.
Thank you so much for developing here......:laugh::laugh::laugh:
I am building for the xperia c4. May I ask where you unlocked the bootloader? Because as far as i remember, you need to unlock the loader for a custom recovery on sony phones. Right?
So far for me the main issue with this phone is high ram usage despite having very few apps installed. Even when closing all apps after use free ram is between 500-600mb. At times ram is under 500mb free and nothing is open.
Ram management is quite an important aspect which needs improvement...
There is also a slight delay when waking the device for some reason...
Also it would be great if we can get stereo speakers working on the device. The upper earpiece is fairly large and should give us decent sound to go with the lower speaker...

Unlocking bootloader isnt always necessarry... If you have root you sometimes can hack the init process... For example look at Xperia L recovery for locked bootloader...
Its mostly something like store the recovery ramdisk as a img file in internal storage... And while init process it gets unpacked and replaces ramdisk
Sent from my mint using XDA Free mobile app
Possible root method for locked bootloader.
If someone can send him a C5 Ultra or at least log from C5 Ultra , thing will go smoother.

I thought the TWRP version you linked is not working properly. Are you saying that it works, now?
That TWRP won't work on some models, I have flashed it on my xt1710-09 and it got stuck on the initial TWRP boot logo.
Good evening. What is the root and hotspot status if you don't mind me asking? I'm thinking of picking up this phone tomorrow

afaik, they're all rootable except the verizon variant...
hotspot...? if you mean, using your data network as a wifi hotspot - unless there's some kind of issue hosting a wifi network while rooted, this device does let you host.

If you buy the phone directly from Motorola/Lenovo, you can put a Verison SIM in and then you can also unlock the bootloader. Takes longer but if you really want to unlock it, this would be the only way I know.

Hello, I have unlock my Moto Z2 play successfully.
I installed TWRP 3.1.1.0 as specified. However, it gets stocked on the Teamwin blue screen and can't do anything from there than reboot.
Any idea how to solve this problem. Thanks a lot

Sorry guys, I'm thinking about buying this phone with a carrier, so I will have 30 months of warranty covering everything. If I unlock the bootloader and flash the recovery I will lose it. Does anyone know how to find the factory image or backup the stock system (recovery and everything) to restore it to stock in case of problems? Thanks in advance
I have the XT1710-10 Dual SIM variant of the Moto Z2 Play, what should i do to succesfully root the phone. Can somebody guide me in detail ?

Which way? What error?... You must go to Motorola's unlock bootloader page (@pizza_pablo kindly shared the link for you already) and >precisely< follow instructions. You can also search for "unlock bootloader Motorola" here or in YouTube. There's aplenty of video tutorials, plus every single Moto device since Moto G requires the very same procedure, so you can follow any. Good luck and don't cry; you'll notice that unlocking is the easiest part.
One more thing: I strongly suggest you to research as much as you can about the subject >first< (it clearly looks like the first time for you) especially on Moto Z2 Play rooting and very especially on Oreo rooting. There's a bit of confusion there.

Yerah...Verizon phones are always locked down, unless you have a Pixel. That's precisely why I dropped them like a bad habit. Well, that AND the fact that they are the most expensive cell provider out there.

Root + TWRP?

I'm thinking about getting this phone but waiting till fill root + trwp is available before buying. I did some research and found this root + TWRP guide for the Xperia 1.
https://www.androidinfotech.com/root-sony-xperia-1-pie/
Is this legit? This is the only complete guide I can find on the net. The ones here are either unofficial or incomplete leading me to believe it's not possible to fully root this device yet.
Thanks for finding this link! I'll try it out and let you know. I'm running the J8170 version of the Xperia 1 on Verizon.

So, I had to make some adjustments to the process, and failed somewhere. But it definitely seems possible.
I was able to revert back to stock (bootloader unlocked), and plan to try again this week when I'm not away from home.

That's encouraging news, since that confirms the J8170 can be bootloader unlocked.
