Does anyone own the Mediapad X1 4G? Would love some feedback on the device as well as - Huawei MediaPad, T-Mobile SpringBoard

I've been going on YouTube to get some reviews but its mostly a quick hands on. Does anyone own the device and have any feedback on it? Any issues? I was thinking about getting the 4G version but I can't find anything on it!
I've noticed the phone has been updated to a new version of android recently... Can you get root with the update?
There's a 4G version of this as well, does that connect to the 4G bands of AT&T or does it just get HSPA+?
I've been trying to look for the Chinese forums for this device to get reviews or user feedback in general but I can't find anything!
Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the info. Do you like the phone? Any problems with it?
Does anyone have any experience with it in the US? It seems like I'm going to be the only one who owns it in the states! [emoji18]

The 503L works in Malaysia where the LTE bands are 1800MHz and 2600MHz FDD. Nigeria probably uses a band unsupported by the device.

There was one other guy I saw in the X1 related threads in this forum here, who said that the H+ bands on AT&T work fine.
This is truly a fantastic device and has all the right boxes ticked. You can even use it as a powerbank in an emergency.

Thanks for the info. I'm glad to hear you like the device, because all I read were wifi and connectivity issues. I'm going to go see what bands AT&T use. Thanks again!

Fantastic device. The best tablet i have ever had. Durable and compact. Software very smooth.

I'm in the US and am on AT&T. The LTE bands don't work in the US so you would probably want to get the 3G version (Unless you travel overseas and might want 4G)
If a huge screen and massive battery are your thing then get this phone. If not, your better served with the Sony Xperia Z Ultra.
Other than Screen Size and Battery, the Mediapad X1 falls short in alot of areas.
Pros
Screen (Why else would you get this phone?)
Battery (I get 3 days on a charge)
Don't need a tablet
Cons
Poor performance (Compared to the current snapdragon equipped phones)
Quirky Wifi Performance/Occasion dropouts (In the US)
Old OS (KitKat is out, but fairly buggy right now)
No custom recovery or roms (This would probably fix alot of the performance issues)
High memory usage (Even after rooting and removing all the Huawei stuff)
Just a little laggy in general (Annoying pause after unlocking the screen)
Build quality is a little lacking (buttons feel cheap and are easy to accidentally press or hold)

I suppose "Poor performance" is relative based on the Antutu score, since I'm happy with the device overall.
I did some exploring with ROM dumping tools, and I think I managed to successfully extract the /system partition. Still exploring though, hope to pick up some ROM modding skills.

Do you get at least HSPA on the device? I know its underpowered because the Ultra has a 2.2ghz vs this one has a 1.6. I was really waiting for the Ultra 2 that would have a flash but I need something now. I didn't think I would need flash that much but I use it all the time as a light.
Did you upgrade to the latest version? Did that improve the performance? How well does it connect to the network?
I don't know about the wifi, I have a Samsung Note now and I get wifi authentication errors all the time!

Yes HSPA+ works just fine at around 5mbs. That's certainly fast enough for cellular data.
I did upgrade to the leaked Kitkat build, it had some nice speed improvements however the DPI was set to 400 which was yuck, and the wifi performance was total crap. I had to go back to 4.2 unfortunately. It wasn't good enough for a daily driver, hopefully those issues get fixed for a proper update...
The wifi issues on 4.2 are not that troublesome, with the leaked 4.4 rom they were very bad.

According to some other posts I read, Huawei may not be able to legally state FDD support as they are not licensed for that spectrum in China. However there are reports that the modem supports all frequencies.
Can I know what is the model number of the 32gb version?

The 703L supports FDD 1800 and 2600MHz, and probably some other FDD bands as well, as it has been reported working in France, Germany, Malaysia and Singapore, which use FDD bands,

Many thanks your confirmation dear friend.

I'm guessing there is no Mediapad x1 that works on T-mobile AWS

Chinese phones and US phone companies

Quick question, im looking into buying a cheap chinese phone because 1, im not picky about being top of the line, and 2, because its inexpensive. But ive been looking into and around the internet for supporting information stating if these chinese phones work on Tmobil, AT&T, Net 10 or Striaght talk. Here is the general break down fo these phones
Operation System: Android 4.0
·4.3 inch Capacitive Multi-touch screen, QHD (540*960)
·CPU:MTK6575 CPU 1GHZ Dual core
·Quadband: GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz 3G WCDMA 900/2100MHz
Id like to know if this type phone would work with the above companies with both talk/txt/mms but also with 3g full US coverage. Thanks in advance
-Nick
Compare the GSM and 3G bands with a well known model at USA
But I cant get a straight answer out of anybody...
I know that the talking/txting/mms will work on the GSM bands provided but its the 3g that im thinking about
I see different things all over the place; some phones are 800/2100, 850/2100, 900/2100, and 1700/2100. The 2100 is prob the only consistent band, but i dont know if, say, 900 correlates to western US and 2100 correlates to eastern half. OR the 900 and 2100 cover ALL of US and you need just one of them. Besides that, several phones on I think tmobile such as the HD7, here's a link to what I mean,
http://www.gsmnation.com/htc-hd7-tmo.html
The top says 1700/2100 but the description states 900/2100 for 3g?!?
Heres a link to one of the phones I was talking about that I was looking into
http://www.fastcardtech.com/goods-7...ouch+Screen+WIFI+G-sensor+3G+smart+phone.html
Thanks,
Rico
Any thoughts on if this phone covers AT&T or Tmobile? Id appreciate any help, thanks guys
Rico
For AT&T, the band is 850/1900 MHz for both GSM and WCDMA 3G. For T-Mobile 850/1900 MHz GSM and 1700 MHz for WCDMA 3G. If your phone is WCDMA 900/2100, 3G will not work for both AT&T and T-mobile. You must have at least one band that matches with your network. For best 3G coverage, both bands must be supported by the phone.
Have a look at this phone with WCDMA 2100MHz (800/850/1900 optional) here: www.chinaphonereview.com/samhave-aone-shanghe-a1
Also look at these phones that have 850/2100 WCDMA bands: www.chinaphonereview.com/zopo-zp100 and www.chinaphonereview.com/zopo-zp200.
Cool, thanks for the link man, I like the ShangHe Aone 3G Android 4.0 you recommended. Do you know of any others? Im just looking for android 4.0 and a nice (not super nice) 4.3'' screen. I was also looking into an Ezio H7 but its android 2.3 and im not sure of the screen quality. Any thoughts? thanks in advance.
I also found these phones with 850/2100 MHz WCDMA bands: Star Xperia S LT26 and THL V9.
The THL V9 has a 4.3 inch screen with qHD resolution (960 x 540 pixels) and Android 2.3 but I think it has already an Android 4.0 update. You might want to check it out.
I was looking into those as well as IHTC 310x or something like that, but the 3g bands are 850/2100 but i need 850/1900. Any other phone references you know of?
Thanks y'all
nick
Hell, ill take a phone with 1700/2100 bands too... if they exist... which i doubt in china.
Most Chinese phones I know are 850/2100 or 900/2100. The ShangHe Aone may be the only dual SIM phone with optional 850/900/1900 bands.
The Meizu MX has a WCDMA/HSDPA band of 850/900/1700/1900/2100 MHz. This phone is high-end, with dual core 1.4 GHz CPU. It also has a quad core version named Meizu MX Quad-Core. Both are very affordable for their specs.
Anyone make any progress in getting this figured out? I've been looking into buying a chinese phone to use on t mobile and it looks like most of them operate WCDMA for 3G speeds, which won't work on t-mobile. Does anyone actually have one now that they're using?

you need one with both 1700 and 2100 in order to get 3g hspa unless your in a coverage area where tmo already supports 1900. in some areas where im at people i know with crapple iphones get 3g where tmo has refarmed thier netwok they are working on getting this frequency to more areas so its wait and see

Simple answer....NO
I too was looking to buy a chinese phone with hope that I would be able to get 3G on Tmobile. Tmobile's 3G unfortunately runs on the 1700 MHz band. If you don't see that band in the phones description you will only get 2G aka EDGE network on TMobile.
So this phone wouldn't work with Tmobile?

I don't know for America, and I am not a techie myself, but from what I understand, you have to look at the frequencies the phone proposes.
In Belgium, 3G works on 900 / 2100 MHz, if the phone doesn't support this, you will fall back to 2G.
for the example above
Tmobile's 3G unfortunately runs on the 1700 MHz band

This is not entirely correct. Part of T-Mobile's HSPA network operates on the hybrid AWS 1700/2100 Mhz frequency where one part is uplink and one downlink, which is not the same as operating solely on 2100 Mhz frequency like many of the Chinese phones work with and many other countries use. They are not compatible.
However, that being said, their HSPA network also works on the 1900 Mhz frequency in most major metro areas of the US now as well as many other parts and many of the world phones do support that.

T-Mobile US, what type of conections?

From this to me it looks like enough match up that The international S3 may have 3g/4g, The phone does not have the 1700 ban for 4g.
Has anyone tried the international unlocked S3 GSM on T-Mobile in the US?
I would love to hear someone's personal experience.
Found this on the Amazon reviews of the product, but people seem to be arguing about it in the comments.
This review is from: Samsung Galaxy S III/S3 GT-I9300 Factory Unlocked Phone - International Version (Ceramic White) (Unlocked Phone)
This International version works in the US as follows: AT&T No LTE, T-Mobile only EDGE No 3G, No 4G. Not compatible with Verizon or Sprint network.
edit: 2 users have claimed that their Intn'l version does produce on AT&T 4G range.

I kinda want a new phone, been living with my Vibrant for some time, it's not a bad phone with Cyanogen 9 dailies. Just the intermittent GPS issues piss me off.
Think I might just wait for the next version of Nexus, I want quad core computing power and the stability of a "google phone" for upcoming software upgrades.

I can't promise hardware wise tho.. since Google seems to always forget about hardware when releasing a "Nexus" device..
idky t-mobile didn't get the quad-core version.. they don't have LTE anyway
I can gaurantee you that you only get edge on tmobile i have the i9300 and its only edge for me in the states (WA state). but i plopped my friends AT&T sim card into my phone and BAM had 3g.

Buying an unlocked GSM Android phone for use in Costa Rica questions.

My family will be taking a trip to Costa Rica this coming February. You can buy a prepaid SIM card from Kölbi (ICE) at the airport. I've done a little research and it appears that an unlocked phone should work for both voice and 3G data so long as the phone supports Costa Rica's bands, 1800 on GSM and 850 on UMTS.
I've come across an inexpensive Android phones, the Pantech Crossover, that seem to fit the bill. Do you guys think that this phone will work? Other than requesting 3G data and setting the APN, is there anything else I need to do to get 3G data to work?
Thanks!

I've come across an inexpensive Android phones, the Pantech Crossover, that seem to fit the bill. Do you guys think that this phone will work? Other than requesting 3G data and setting the APN, is there anything else I need to do to get 3G data to work?
Thanks!

Yes it should work but make sure that the phone is SIM unlocked first before you leave on your trip. Then once you get the SIM card put it in the phone and activate it, making sure to request 3g data and setting the APN properly. If you do these things you should be all set.

shimp208, thanks for the response. Anybody know how well Google Maps (especially Navigation) works in Costa Rica? Can it create routable directions based on address or POI?
Thanks!

Google maps should work just fine, unfortunately Costa Rica isn't know for having blazing fast mobile data speeds so finding the map routes might take a while to load. That being said yes it can create directions based on address or others points of interest. Overall, it should work fine you just might have to be a little patient with waiting for map directions.
I should have asked this earlier. Are there any other inexpensive Android phones that might fit the bill? I'm looking to spend as little money as possible.

The LG Thrive P506 Black 3G Unlocked Cell Phone should fit the bill for you. Its only $105 and has the required wireless bands, is unlocked, and should be more then enough for a cheap phone to be used for getting some gps directions, making a couple calls, or looking up some points of interest.

shimp208, thanks for the suggestion. Since I've got some time before the trip, I'm weighing my options. Currently I'm considering the following:
A used AT&T phone (assuming that I can unlock it) off eBay - under $100
A new unlocked Pantech Crossover - under $70
A new unlocked LG Thrive from NewEgg - $105
A Zopo ZP500 cheap Chinese Android phone, but appears to work on AT&T's frequencies - $170
The reason why I'm sticking the ZP500 into the mix is that it's specs are better than the low end Android phones that I'm also considering. Does anybody have any experience with this phone? Does it do 3G on AT&T's 850Mhz band?
Thanks!
BTW, I posted a question on the TripAdvisor forum for Costa Rica regarding buying a prepaid sim card when I get in country and somebody suggested that I acquire the sim card through costaricacellularconnection before I go and activate the sim/phone when I get in country. Has anybody used this service?

While I haven't used it personally it seems to have good reviews with people being really happy with the performance you get for the price. And to answer your question about 3G on the 850Mhz band yes that should work.

Just looked at this phone seems like a good choice enjoy your trip

Unfortunately the Phoenix arrived and had a busted microSD slot as it would not recognize any of my cards. So I wound up getting a new Pantech Burst. Worked out in my favor as the Burst seems to be (at least on paper) a significantly more powerful device (1.5Ghz dual core Snapdragon CPU, 1GB RAM, & 16GB flash).

Yes that is a much more powerful device compared to the Phoenix dual 1.2 Ghz (From what I read) vs 800 mhz and 1 GB vs 512 RAM, plus bigger and better screen is the better choice.
Ordered a ZOPO ZP500+

I ordered a ZOPO ZP500+. I've read it is identical to the ZP500 with the exception that the single core MTK6575 CPU was swapped out with the pin-for-pin-compatible dual core MTK6577. In addition to the dual SIM functionality, I like the fact it is dual core and a quad band where both 2G and 3G should work in Asia, Europe, and North America.
It purports to have 850MHz 3G, and I have read of an Australian user using this phone's 3G with 850MHz and also a Canadian with 3G at 850MHz. It reads to be reasonably popular amongst Russian users. Can't say I know the specifics of AT&T's 850 MHz implementation so I can't comment.
I anticipate delivery of the phone in a week's time, when I am keen to get a good look at it then.

What specifically are you trying to figure out about AT&T's 850 MHz implementation? Here is a map of where AT&T has 850 MHz 3G coverage in the U.S, if you follow the link and scroll up there should also be a map of AT&T's 1900 MHz spectrum coverage.

Those are great maps of AT&T's 850MHz (and 1900 MHz coverage).
I'm not looking for AT&T coverage myself, but rather interested in coverage in Canada (specifically Saskatchewan and also Ontario). I only mentioned AT&T in this thread because of this post in the thread:

Again, AT&T is not of interest to me.
Reference my interest in Saskatchewan's and Ontario's coverage, the best I have been able to find so far is this site: http://maps.mobileworldlive.com/index.php

If your looking to get coverage in those Canadian areas I would use the website you looked at to find out which carriers have 3G 850 MHz coverage in the areas you want. Then once you know what carriers have coverage in the areas you want, I'd go out and buy a prepaid SIM from among the the carrier that offers the coverage your looking for and then go with whatever carrier has the best value for the money in terms of data usage, etc. and use that.

Let us know how the Zopo works out. I'm interested in knowing how well these Chinese MTK6575/6577 phones work. Had I not gotten a great deal on a new Burst on eBay I would have really been considering one of these. An interesting development (at least in the GSM space) is that the Nexus 4 is within $100 US of most of the currently available Chinese dual core phones. That will put a real price squeeze on the next gen quad core phones...

Sure will, to me unless your really on a tight budget it seems like a no brainer to invest the extra $100 or so for not only significantly more powerful hardware but also a lot better community support due to the very open nature of nexus devices.

[Q] Does the Mediapad X1 support T - Mobile LTE?

Hi guys. I currently own an Xperia Z Ultra C6806.
I am intrigued by the huge screen on the Mediapad X1. One deciding factor is whether or not it supports LTE ON T-Mobile.
Do any of you guys have any experience in this area? Anyone have any success connecting to T-Mobile LTE with this phone?
T-Mobile US 4G supported frequency(band): 700Mhz(12), 1700Mhz(4), 1900Mhz(2), 2100Mhz(4)
Huawei Mediapad 4G model:
-Model: 7D-501L: support TDD-LTE:B38/39/40/41
-Model: 7D-503L: support FDD-LTE: B1/3
So I don't think that it supports 4G LTE in US.
However, the above two models and the 3G model 7D-501u will support T-Mobile 3G (3.5G) at frequency 2100Mhz
This is from my research at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-Mobile_US#Radio_frequency_spectrum_chart
I live in Staten Island, NY and when I took my sim card out of my T-Mobile Note 3 and put it in my x1 (I have the 4g Chinese version), it was pretty quick. So for me it work on LTE.
Hey man I live in the Bronx and work in manhattan. Did it indicate that it was connected to LTE or did it just show the big H.
If its not too much trouble could you tru this out in an area where the note 3 indicates that LTE is present?
Thanks.

[Q] International LTE model on Verizon in the US?

I really want to get the Z4 tablet but it doesn't seem like it's going to come to the US anytime soon. Is there an international LTE model that will work on Verizon? Also, do the international models come with unlocked bootloaders?
AFAIK all models have the option of unlocking the bootloader. Just visit the SONY developer site and get your unlock code.
If an international device does not work on Verizon you could flash an US ROM instead.
I use my phone (Wifi tethering) for LTE ... only one contract for me.
Have you met Verizon? Do yourself a favor and go buy a T-Mobile sim card
What the French, toast!
Nah, I doubt you're gonna find anything that works on Verizon unless Sony releases an LTE tablet for CDMA carriers. The international LTE version of the Z4 is GSM (works with AT&T or T-Mobile), which will not work with Verizon's network, or Sprint for that matter.

No CDMA.

I see nothing that prevents a connection as long as the LTE coverage is there. You want LTE speed for the fun (anything less than UMTS HSPA+ Cat 24 sucks IMO).

I'd have to get the tablet in hand first
By the by I think you already unlocked your Z4's bootloader.
Can you check whether miracast works still? It's kinda of a big deal to me, some xperia devices report their miracast function broken after a bootloader unlock, others don't (which of two is tablet Z4?).
I do not know what miracast is - I suppose something with Digital Restriction Management (DRM).
If I see this I run as fast as I can and vote with my wallet (not buying it).
analogous:
One of the banks I am working with has a banking app. It does not work on rooted devices (look at the ratings for DKB in PlayStore).
The same bank over a browser on the same device has banking as it used to be ...
There must be a way for miracast too ...
Miracast is basically a wireless HDMI protocol so yeah it carries all the DRM associated with it. I'm not into DRM filled software either and try to avoid it but (like HDMI) it's almost the only game in town in wirelessm beaming. I root all my devices and I could still use it (even though I would lose other "exclusives"). It's a bit sad to see it "go" mostly because there is no (true) alternative in content beaming (a quick way to show pictures, videos and content in general to many people at once).
And I guess "once unlocked" ... One never gets it back (even if one relocks), I think I just found an obvious downside of Sony priducts :/. Thanks
I actually tried to put verizon sim card in and attempted to connect.
It is able to detect the network, but not able to make a successful connection. ( I think it's the apn setting issue, where i simply cannot save apn with mcc 310 + mnc 012 )
Been looking around since then.
If you guys had any ideas of anything to try. let me know. i'd love to try them out.
I'd like to know what carriers and plans people have found to work in US.
What the French, toast!
