Okay to update to 4.4.3 OTA before unlock/root/recovery? - AT&T HTC One (M8)

Does anyone know if the OTA 4.4.3 will kill any current methods of unlocking, rooting, flashing, etc in my brand new device? 4.4.2 / 1.58.502.1
Im traveling at the moment (not much time for researching, mistakes) and the battery life isn't all that great, I'd like to see what the OTA brings until I can get in front of a computer (limited to a mac, if it makes a difference) and go to town on this bad boy.
Thanks in advance.

I unlocked right after the OTA, and root/recovery is always possible after unlocking.

Sorry for posting in the wrong section.

Is 4.4.3 rolling out for AT&T? I haven't heard of this yet.
firewater s-off has been patched in newer 4.4.3 hboots. Not sure about your present hboot, but I believe firewater will still work on your current setup.
You should still be able to use sunshine to s-off after OTA, but it costs $25.
Bootloader unlock (and therefore flashing ROMs and rooting) are still available if you OTA. S-off is only needed to do certain things. But if you do want s-off, doing so with firewater is something to consider.

How to remove "tampered" tag from bootloader mode?

Hey everyone, the HTC Droid DNA is my first android phone ever. I've had several years' experience jailbreaking and developing on the ipod touch, so I rooted my phone after exploring it and becoming familiar with the operating system and its features. Everything went smoothly, except that now there's a headline in bootloader mode that says **TAMPERED**, I guess as a quick way for Verizon to find out if the phone's been rooted or not.
Well, I do know about unrooting, but my question is, will unrooting my phone remove the **TAMPERED** line from bootloader mode?
No the tampered notice is permanent until we get s-off.

From my understanding, rooting is pretty much you performing a privilege escalation attack on your phone.
So is getting s-off the same thing, just to a deeper level?
It's not the same. S-on means security is On and you cannot make chanes to the system files while booted in android.
The Cube kernel allows writing to the system while booted in android but it's not the same as S-off though the effect is similar.
So, how do programs like Unrevoked Forever get s-off?
And I haven't heard about the phone's radio, which is apparently where the flag is stored. Can someone explain that to me, or link to an article that does? I'll try to find one in the meantime...
edit: Found a question on stackexchange.com explaining what the radio firmware is.
(I know it can't be this easy, but...) If you can't change it while booted into Android, then wouldn't you have to connect the phone to the computer, turn it off, and run an assembly program on it that flips the S flag, provided that you know where it is? Or flash a new radio to it, with a flipped S flag?

This isn't true. It was a kernel issue that prevented us from writing to the system. This has been resolved with dsbs newest kernel as you said but that had nothing to do with s-on. S-off means we can't write to the parts of our phones that could potentially leave us with sexy paper weights

S-off is like root in the sense that we have parts of the system we can't touch until we achieve such. S-off is different depending on the device because it requires a different exploit. Its a shame Cyanogen doesnt work for HTC instead of Samsung haha.

That's where I'm confused. I've only dealt with Moto phones that have locked bootloaders. Once rooted and the bootloader is circumvented we could install any Rom as long as a developer ported one over . With the S thing, I'm not 100% clear on it even though I've read a few articles on it, and now a kernel was made that allows writing to the system while booted there is an additional wrinkle to my comprehension of all this.
How do you find an exploit in the radio? Is the code in it ever readable to the user?

The s on/s off status if your phone doesn't effect roms at all. Just deeper level stuff.

I understand lol. I've owned three HTC phones and can attest that that's not how s-on usually works. That's why it was never really that bad because you still had a lot of control over your phone.

Does anyone know if weaksauce and firewater work on at&t m8 to get s-off ?

Does anyone know if the root tool weaksauce and firewater work on at&t m8 to get s-off ?
The root tool weaksauce shows it works on the verizon m8 version then your supposed to be able to get s-off with firewater.
Does anyone know ? I have the m8 at&t version and I would like to get s-off.

It may not be to you but it is to a lot of the rest of us.
I like the freedom of not ever needing a computer which you never do with s-off.
Your not the first person to try to say that as it seems people like to say that when they dont understand what s-off means. If s-off was not really that big of deal then ask yourself why do the devs put in all the time and effort to crack it and get s-off if its as you claim not necessary ???? Why dont you ask the devs that question, maybe they can explain it to you so you can understand and comprehend it.
I have had s-off on every htc smartphone I have had since the first evo 4g and I have had a lot of them. s-on may be good enough for you and all you want, but not everyone is as content being s-on as you.
Uh this isn't the HTC One X days. You dont need a computer to flash roms or any other tweaks.
For as the devs.. I never said S-Off was useless I said it's not important as getting root and flashing roms which is probly the main priority to get access to first rather than S-Off.

Yeah if you always want to flash roms with stock kernels, most of us dont like the stock kernels so yes you would need a computer. Access was gained before the phones were even released, but if your content with s-on that is your prerogative to settle for that, as is ours to want s-off and not settle.
For the life of me I have no clue why people content with s-on always seem to question people that want s-off. This post has nothing to do with deciding is s-off is not needed by anyone, its to talk about gaining s-off.
If your happy with s-on then please go post on forums where others are happy being s-on...

Isnt that only on the verizon version m8 though ? Not sure everything I have found on searches just shows the verizon version m8. If it works on the at&t version m8 now that would be what I"am wanting. Also I was told weaksauce only works on the verizon version also. Which weaksauce is supposed to let you switch back to stock very easily I think as easy as uninstalling the app. Now that is just pure genius.

I got burned on the M7 with that and the camera issue. Even though the camera issue was a known F up on HTC's part, they tried to charge me 200 bucks to fix it because I was unlocked. Only way they knew I was unlocked was because of HTC Dev, because the device was sent to them completely stock. I ruu'd back to stock before sending it to them.
This is my work phone, so I don't pay for it, therefore I'd like to be able to hide the fact that I've knowingly "voided" the warranty.
PS. I complained enough and got up high enough the food chain that they offered to fix my phone, however by then my digitizer died and the M8 came out.

AT&T going to update us?

I noticed that most carriers have updated their M8s to the 1.54.x software, the one that includes the Extreme Battery saver and some camera mods....wondering if anyone knows if AT&T will update us any time soon?
I'm waiting for this update before I dive in and unlock/root/s-off my phone, but it's getting hard. I know you can flash an OTA after unlocking, et. al, but I really don't want to have to go through that process.

True, but that would probably be fixed by developers very quickly. S-Off, on the other hand, would probably be a nightmare to fix. Just a guess, though as I have no idea what went into the process.
I unlocked the bootloader, S-Off'd, and rooted the minute I got home with it. I'm still on the stock ROM with a couple of mods like the red text and removed carrier iq.
It's your phone and whatever you decide is all that matters. Enjoy it for what it is.

If you unlock bootloader and soff there is nothing they can ever do to block you from rooting. When you said you didn't want to go through the hassle of upgrading firmware after unlocking, it is faster and only one command to do it. As for your opinion, that is fine, but how can you have an opinion on roms if you haven't even tried one? It's just like everything else in life, for every post with someone having a problem, there are 100 people who are having no problems at all. I don't know if you are new to this but I guarantee you that almost every Rom out there is better than the stock bloated, carrier iq, feature missing at&t Rom. If you plan on unlocking in the future I promise there is no reason to wait. You will not miss out on anything except for the chance of soff.

Cool, that's awesome news! Thank you. I had the m7 before this and ran many Roms, so yeah, I know what I like and I know what specific features I like and right now, I think that stock is where it's at, despite the several 100mbs of bloat. I will not say that sense based Roms won't ever compare, because they will and they will surpass my expectations as usual.....and likely soon, at least that was my experience with the m7. I ran stock for about three months before I felt that another sense based Rom could compare to my personal liking.

Heck yeah! That was my thought too after reading some of the replies here. I S-Off'd right away on the M7, but that was different because there was a method to do it without going through HTCDev, but not so much for us AT&T M8 users, at least that I have seen/tried. Oh well.

Rooting M8 after att update

Hi everyone,
I have used the forums in the past to root my old s3 and before that to root/add a custom rom to an old HTC Aria so I do have a little experience with modifying phones. I recently got the HTC m8 (att version) and was holding off on doing anything to it until the EPS got added. Since the update today, EPS is currently live on my phone. How would I go about rooting it now? I saw a post about the old root methods, but will they still work with the new update? I basically want to root my phone so that I can uninstall any bloatware. I know I can disable it but would prefer to get it off completely. On my s3 I also used an app to prevent certain apps that I periodically used from automatically starting up. Would rooting be my best option? I have read up a little on the S-off, and I don't believe I need to do this to uninstall bloatware, but please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks in advance for any advice.
You may just wanna boot loader unlock and flash twrp first in order to keep that full stock image. So once you start uninstalling things you don't run into trouble. Also it's the easiest method to root (after fastboot flashing twrp 2.7.0.2, you can flash supersu 1.94 via recovery and your good to go. Stock backup with root

If you're already S-Off, then the update can't do anything about it.
If you're S-On, and firewater was patched in the update, then you shouldn't be able to S-Off (unless another exploit is found). Thing is, I don't think anyone who's S-On has updated yet to test firewater. I will when I get my replacement, but I won't have that for days.

Hi, this will be my first post but ive been a member for a while just never had a problem big enough to create a post till now. so this is my second max the first one was on 4.3 and rumrunner did the trick, but I have been reading almost every thread that had to do with s-off of hboot 2.49, i read about going to old drivers switching ports and cables basically did everything. I am on verizon and have temp root with weaksauce and have root but when firewater runs and its start chugging it either chugs one or two and then returns to the command line, one time it kept chugging to bottle 11(figured it was on a loop) so thats where i am at any guidance would be much appreciated. btw, i tried using the firewater temp root but i get a failed getting root so cant go on from there, just thought id share that.
By temp root, do you mean weaksauce?
Edit: reread and I see that you do. Sometimes these things just work randomly, I'd just keep trying. Maybe post a screenshot of exactly what your PC screen looks like when trying with weaksauce root?

I will, theres a lot of pople that have used firewater and it works i just might be one of those special cases, but keep watching this thread hopefully someone will get me on he right track
I just had an idea. I was reading about weaksauce and it takes about a minute for root to become available after device boot. So, maybe you could try waiting a minute after the part where the device reboots to execute the next command.

Also, make sure you are using a USB 2.0 port. People in other forums have reported issues with 3.0.

lol, ok so my computer has 6 usb ports four 2.0 and 2 for 3.0 i tried at first on 2.0 then reading on people said try using 3.0 then i stopped at 3.0, but when you run firewater it tells you this:
opening first bottle 1
chugging..........
after this it should say you are now s-off and blah blah blah(saw a pic someone put on one thread) what it does to me is:
opening first bottle 1
chugging..........
C:\Users\Desktop\ etc
basically to me means it failed because it went back to command line

found a pic almost like that but with the chugging
Strange. It might just not be possible on the latest firmware. Most s-off methods seems to work better if you've already unlocked the bootloader. But with the VZW model, you need to get s-off before unlocking bootloader, which I think might be a big reason why people have so much trouble with vzw s-off. I'm not too familiar with HTC, is there an official way to roll back the firmware without s-off?
