[Q] Porting SG3 from Verizon to AT&T - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good day everyone!
I recently had my # ported from Verizon to AT&T. I have a Samsung Galaxy S3. Once ported, texting and calling both work fine; however, I can not get the data to work. I have full bars, but it doesn't say "4G" where it once used to. When I try to load a web page or app it says no internet connection can be found.
The AT&T sales person who ported my # said she has done it with S3 Verizon phones before but for some reason couldn't get it to work. I talked to Verizon and they said while the phone was unlocked, it hasn't been fully disconnected (even though my account was) and the system will fully disconnect my phone at the end of my next billing cycle, but that they couldn't guarantee the data would work after being fully disconnected.
I looked around on the site and the internet and I saw some people say Verizon phones are incompatible with AT&T network; and other posts say they have gotten it to work. So I am confused now.
On Menu...Settings...More Settings...Mobile Networks...Network Mode... It has GSM as an option but I tried selecting it but it still couldn't find the AT&T network.
Any help would be much appreciated!

roam on att help

my friend tom got his galaxy s like two months ago. he has a even more plus plan with unlimited everything on tmobile and he used that in a iphone 3g for a year with no problems and he could roam with no issues on att.
with his new vibrant its not working! it takes forever to try to connect then gives a error. the sim should be good since it roams in two other unlocked phones..
for the note, his phone IS unlocked... that was the first thing we thought of..
the error is: unable to select network.. your sim card is not allowed to connect to this network
this phone is a quadband phone so it should work.. we have put a att legit iphone sim in it and it works great.. what gives? why can't he roam on this new phone when other phones do? running bionix rom.. have tried updates, wondering if anyone has any opinions or info
we've already tried changing network settings with *#0011#, gone into service mode *#*#197328640#*#* with no luck
edit: we've tried not allowing the phone to connect to our local att 3G band (1900) and use all other bands again with no luck. the phone connects to canada's rogers network tho.. weird..
anyone check this out yet?? anyone got it workin? any reports would be killer ...
we have tried more settings through service mode still with no luck. when we specify certain bands and leaving the att 3G local band unchecked, it will not hop on T-mobile with the setting! Crazy! not sure if it's the rom, radio version or kernel but we will keep tweaking and posting results.. if anyone is having this issue or has concerns any posts or signs of life would be cool lol
Same issue
Unfortunately, I don't have a solution, but I've been working on this same issue since september. I originally contacted tmo about the problem to see if they somehow hadn't provisioned my phone/account for roaming. Needless to say they were not much help. They suggested I exchange the phone for a new one, which I did, and I still have the same problem.
I'm in a rural area of california where tmo has roaming on att towers. My girl has tmo service with a different samsung phone and she can roam on att just fine. She can send/receive calls and text. I even put my sim in her phone, and it works, so I've pretty much narrowed the problem down to an issue with the vibrant itself.
My phone is not unlocked, so we've ruled that out. I'm running bionix fusion with ji2 modem now, but I've had the issue with the stock phone before ji6, and after ji6 ota. I've tried messing around with the service menu the same as you, and I haven't got anywhere either.
I have been able to get the phone to at least lock on to att by adding the apn internet2.voicestream.com, and it will get past the "not registered on network" message. Unfortunately, it won't complete a call or send a message, it just times out after about 15 seconds and drops back to the previous menu (depending on whether I tried to dial out of contacts, the call log, or the dialer). But it does not give me an error message, it behaves as if the call connected and immediately hung up.
I had given up on it for the past couple weeks, but I have time now to try and work it again. Let me know if you've gotten anywhere, and I'll do the same.
The fix is: when you're in an att roam area, set your phone to gsm 850 only via the service menu. If your phone doesn't auto lock on the att network, search for available networks and choose att. After that you should be able to send and receive calls and texts.
after yet some more messing around, still no luck. it's clearly a thing with tmobile not allowing roaming..... because i read many threads off the gooooogle that say tmobile is pretty much going away and any "contractless" plans don't have roaming so they don't lose money....
dickheads. at least he's grandfathered in with a good unlimited everything plan tho..
even if all this said, if anyone finds any info out post!
the other day i was out of tmobiles network coverage and on att voice and edge not 3g. i live in texas
this is with a stock vibrant jI6
tried the app RoamControl with no luck. it uses different tmobile bands when in "roam only" mode. anyone have any luck yet?

[Q] use of a foreign sim

Ok so I (foolishly) bought a galaxy s4 with verizon even though I was moving overseas to Israel in two months. I made sure that the phone was world capable (like it can do cdma and gsm) and the guy at the store said it would handle foreign sims no problem. Once I arrived here I got a new sim. I figured out that it needed to be in gsm. From then on it had the service bar and confirmed it was connected to Orange. Since then I have been able to receive calls and texts, but not make them, every time I try to make a call before one ring I get a prerecorded message saying that my number cant be completed as dialed. I have tried several things already to fix this: to a cell phone repair person, to the local sim carrier where a lady tried using the sim of her own phone, customer service at verizon and samsung (who both told me to go see the other). I also did a factory reset which didnt do anything.
my phone is not rooted and is schi545 ME7. I will root if I have to, but if I dont I would prefer not to for the time being
Anyway I suspect the problem has something to do with the fact that I got the phone from verizon. Every time I start the phone I get the Verizon logo and after a minute I get a notification from the verizon set up wizard saying that I have a non verizon sim and that the sims source is unknown. I also tried disabling the verizon security and was able to make the notification go away but the problem persists.
Can someone with experience with this kind of stuff help me please? Thank you so very much:good:
Are you sim unlocked? I don't think the phone is unlocked. Talk to verizon to see if they'll unlock it.
According to verizon I am. I spoke with multiple representives from verizon and they said the phone was unlocked

Has any one told you if you have to change any apn, access point name? That may be the problem too. They can be specific to the carrier.
No, how do you configure that

In system settings, network & wireless, more, mobile networks, access point name. It'll be specific to the carrier so i can't help you there.
all LTE Verizon phones after Galaxy Note 2 are factory unlocked it must be a APN issue. Try maybe to do a factory reset and as previous poster suggested do the steps he told you to change the APN or look into I think it's called HiApn in Play Store.
Also try to put it in global mode or GSM? play with the settings.
still having problems
Thanks for all the input everyone but my problem still persists
I downloaded HiApn and followed its instructions to which told me to set up 3 Apns. I noticed that only one of them can be active at the time. I tried with each one active and I still can not make phone calls. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Go to Setting, call setting, disable the prefix international. I have done the same for using Verizon S4 in Indonesia.
Mine was not unlocked either, although I knew this before buying. This is a guide I tried (without success) to unlock it on my own.
Like the last poster, I reside in Indonesia, but I was never with Verizon. I rooted mine and have had no problems since.
Ok so I went to call settings and the closest I found was assisted dialing for international calls and the option to turn it on or off. I played with that for a bit and it didnt work.
I also tried the code and it said connection problem or invalid code
during my fiddling I came upon an app that showed promise of fixing my problem if I had adb shell. Does anyone have a good place to get that? I tried a few that didnt work out for me. There was another that showed promise but it wouldnt send a package no matter what I try
Thanks
If you want ADB, you need to download Android SDK and have Java Runtime Environment also installed. Then, it is just a matter of typing in "adb" into the command prompt of Windows.
Is there a serious conflict for you not rooting the device? The true benefit of doing this is to get SIM cards from anywhere to work, and to allow certain apps to work. Rooting is simply a matter of bypassing security parameters. As long as you follow instructions strictly, you won't have an issue using the phone as it should be used.
yea I suppose I could try to root it. Im just not great at that stuff and am worried about messing up my phone permanately

You don't need to root. You need to sim unlock. Get a hold of att international chat and adj them for an unlock code.
Hey guys thanks for all the help but I figured out that it was just a bad sim all along and that the first school screwed me over
But everything works now

Vzw S7 Edge w/ BYOP Straight Talk Sim not sending texts (Call and Data working)?

I got a used Verizon S7 edge and activated it last night on my Straight Talk line with a BYOP Verizon Compatible Sim Card. I checked the phone before purchasing and it said it was fully compatible. Data and calling seem to be working fine (though DATA could be running a bit slow - I haven't really played around with it a ton.) But I'm having trouble with text messaging. The text message just pends and then eventually fails and it will give me an error about not having service and that the message will be sent when I have service. While it does this it's showing 4G LTE bars as normal. I've gotten a few messages and sent a few but they're very few and far between, and very unpredictable.
I got on Straight Talk chat and they tried a couple things but said I needed to call. I don't know if I'll be able to call them until tomorrow so I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas I could try in the meantime? I work all night tonight at my 2nd job and I think it's draining my battery constantly searching for service.
Any ideas? TIA!

There is a new apn not the old straight talk one. My family member had the same issue with his att one. But also. Idk if you have a Verizon SIM from straight talk. I know Verizon uses cdma and Sprint and att use gsm, so if your phone for example from Verizon and you use a att sim. Will not work or if you have an att phone and a Verizon SIM will not work. If you have a Verizon phone and a Verizon SIM from straight talk. I'm pretty sure its the apn setting

Roaming Indicator Off and MMS not working

Hello, I just switched from Sprint to a Verizon MVNO and a few weird things are happening and I can't seem to find a lot of info or help for it. After sticking the new SIM in, it said it was connecting to "." and then it updated apps for "." After that, where Sprint or US Mobile should be located at the top left, it says "Roaming Indicator Off" instead. In the network settings it says the network provider is "roaming indicator off" lol.
The APN list is a dozen of Verizon related ones, and Verizon Internet is selected. I was told by support to use add a new APN., and it removed the long list of others and kept the VZWINTERNET one. The top left then read "Searching for Service" and I had LTE while it was searching but after 2 or so minutes it shut off and read "Emergency calls Only". I've tried putting the Sprint sim back in and fiddling with the settings there and switching back to the US Mobile sim, and it started to try to activate to the network but eventually failed and gave error code 6604. I'm assuming it was trying to connect to Sprint? Someone suggested taking a Verizon sim and seeing if that can install the Verizon personality on the phone, since it was still running Sprint OMADM and was in an in-between stage of being both Sprint and Verizon. I found an old Verizon droid and put the sim in. It got it to recognize as a Verizon sim, and now it boots up saying Hello Verizon, downloaded the apps and waited a while. Started to look good, it said it couldn't activate service but I'm assuming because there isn't any on it? Popped the US Mobile sim back in and still saying Roaming Indicator Off. MMS still doesn't work either. Also noticed I have a new APN, LTE Verizon Internet. I have another phone with an active Verizon service on it, but I'm not sure if that will work either. Maybe I'm more in Verizon land than no man's land now.. At least I'm getting somewhere.
I should also add this is on a Galaxy S9+ and was leased on Sprint, I bought it out over a week ago and ported over 2 days ago. MMS is also not working. Data, and VoLTE are though.

what wireless carrier is compatible with s10 lite? which carrier do you use with it?

So far it appears that only tmobile networks allow this phone, since at&t does not support VoLTE with this phone (must set to 3g in order to receive texts/calls). I love this phone, but tmobiles cell towers don't offer a good signal in my area (using straight talk w/ tmobile card). So this got me wondering, which wireless carriers can this actually use now days? What do you personally use with this phone, and how is the service? Verizon definetly won't work either, so it looks like I am out of options... Any replies to this would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!
You sure? Here's the AT&T white list, more may have been added since...
I am positive. And yes, I have seen my phone on the list. no phone calls or text messaging when on LTE (and at&t). I looked into changing the IMEI so that I could use a random generated one that matches an s20 or some other phone that is more compatible, then gave up on it. At this point Im looking to sell my s10 lite so I can buy a oneplus 8T/Pro, just so I get better compatibility. Supposedly AT&T is also dropping support for international versions of cell phones, which this is. I went through 3 different at&t sim cards and all have the same result. I just wish there was a way to change my IMEI (or somehow spoof a different phone some other way)

Is VoLTE enabled etc in hidden phone settings?
Did you have AT&T reset it on their end?
Talk to AT&T advanced tech support.
If white listed it should work!
I have straight talk which gives three options: at&t, TMobile, or Verizon (so I can't call att directly). I went into the hidden menu settings and VoLTE was turned off and greyed out. I even opened a file and added a few lines (might have been build.prop or something like that, don't remember) and all that did was switch it on in the settings (but still greyed out).
When I called straight talk tech support and asked them to provision VoLTE, all they would say is that the sim card is provisioned, and that's all they can do. Phone and text used to work if I set it on 3g (instead of lte), but this was less than optimal. I also read a reddit post today from someone four hours away that said they killed off the 3g now, so I'm not going to try using another at&t card until I get a different phone that is compatible. I know this phone is capable of VoLTE but at&t sucks, and they want to force a bunch of people to upgrade to newer phones for whatever reason.
I've even had this phone work with a Verizon sim card swapped from a different phone, but after a few days it gets shut off. So it's not a question of compatibility more than it is at&t just being jerks.

Straight talk maybe the issue. I don't know for sure. Maybe it's the sim card.
Both my N10+'s N975U, N975U1 made the jump seamlessly, no changes were needed on my side.
However the N975U was configured for 4G VoLTE already.
On the new N975U1 all I did was plug the N975U sim card in and it was online.
I feel you... this was an unwanted learning curve for me and had me doing a lot of Google searches.
