[TIPS&TRICKS]Workaround for app links opening in stock Browser in MIUI 6 - Mi 3 General

I don't know about you guys, but I used to have all app links (play store links, youtube links, etc.) and downloads start in the stock browser by default in MIUI 6, with no way to open them in app. After posting on the MIUI english forums, I found a temporary workaround.
You'll have to uninstall the stock Browser app (I prefer Chrome anyway). Then clicking on app links or download links will give you the app chooser dialog.
(If you are unwilling to uninstall your stock Browser, move on...I can't help you...)
For this, you'll need root access (if you got MIUI 6 you're on the Dev fw, and have root access anyway). Use an app with root uninstaller capabilities (I use ES File Explorer)
(Oh, and the stock Browser will get reinstalled after every update, so you'll have to repeat this every week till the Xiaomi devs actually fix this)
EDIT: 4.9.26 update DID NOT reinstall Stock Browser for some reason...didn't have to do all this again!

Freeze/Disable
For me, It reinstalls the stock browser at every boot/reboot. Hence, uninstalling didn't solve the problem.
The only solution I've found so far is to Freeze the app using Titanium Backup. (needs Donate version)
Let me know if the app can be freezed using some other free app. Thanks

You can also set chrome as default in setting..that way you don't need to uninstall stock browser

Setting Chrome as default doesn't help. It will still open external links in stock browser.
Please try to understand the problem @sbr
That is why we are having a discussion here. Freezing is the only solution.

even with chrome set as default the stock browser will still intercept certain types of links. usually those shortened links for youtube, maps, play store.
i did the same too. uninstall after every reboot

Freezing default browser does the job.

Remove Facebook Link in App Drawer

For security reasons, I have deleted my facebook account. If I (even accidentally) go to my facebook page in the next 14 days, the account is re-activated.
I am running stock Tapn'Tap, with the last update (3588), rooted and market installed.
I noticed a facebook icon in the app drawer. Unable to locate a facebook app anywhere on the system, I then found that it is actually a link that opens the browser to facebook. Since I do not intend to ever use it, I want to remove it.
Anyone have any insight? I have looked, and can't seem to locate anything. Keep in mind that I am not using a custom ROM, but am stock.
Root, remove app/link then unroot!

Titanium Backup,You could force remove apps, or freeze them.
Freezing will prevent it from showing up in the app drawer.

Uhmm?.. Ok you could root your device using z4root and still keep your stock OS on there.
Then, with Titanium Backup,You could force remove apps, or freeze them.
Freezing will prevent it from showing up in the app drawer.
Afterwards, you can unroot your device with the z4Root, But I don't know if it would actually unroot because I have never tried that feature.

I think that you need to re-read my original post more carefully.
1) I am already rooted
2) Facebook is not an app, but a link that opens the browser to the facebook page.
I also have Titanium Backup installed, and it is not in there either. I also have root explorer (paid version) installed. That is how I was searching for it.
Isn't that just a browser bookmark?
I also want to remove the facebook icon (which is in fact a link opening the brwser) because it is somehow broken. I cannot login with my HannsPad via the icon. I already tried a new passwort and checked with a second facebook account, the browser does not allo me to log in. I can login with the same acoounts from my computer at the same time! So I want to remove the link from the screen and install the apk. app which runs fine.

YouTube links directing to website rather than app

I don't know if this is specific to this phone or not but every time I click a YouTube link I am directed to the the website instead of the app. I have cleared permissions and un installed updates to no avail. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Check app associations in your settings... It should ask you what to launch unless you have already set it to go directly to the browser

My YouTube asks everytime I hit a link if I want to open it in the browser or the YouTube app and won't let me set a default. My app associations menu doesn't list anything related to YouTube either.
So my question is this -- where are you launching the links? It's possible that it's a problem within your browser, so you might want to try a different one and see what it does. If it's not from the browser (Facebook, etc), it might be that app.

I have a guide that solves this exact problem, sadly, you need to be rooted. So as soon as you are rooted (or if you're one of the lucky ones who is rooted) check out this thread right here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1696536 it will work on your device and solve your issue :good:
great - thanks! now I just need root for the Inc 4g

Opening of app instead of opening the link in browser

Hi,
I am using Galaxy s3 and upgraded it to Jelly Bean.
Till now whenever I used to click the link in S3's default internet browser, I used to get the app to open it. For e.g. if i clicked on Google play link, it used to open google play appl. Or if I click on youtube link it used to open youtube app on my android device.
But now, every time i click on any such link, it opens app in web browser. It is very much annoying.
I have cleared all the defaults of all the apps like Internet, Youtube, Google play etc but the issue still continues.
Seniors can you please help me in this issue. I really tried all the things but no success.
Awaiting for your help.
Kind Regards,
Anoop.
Possibly not much of a solution but try using a different web browser, there are far better than stock. Try using dolphin browser HD or Chrome. There are a few more but they are the ones I recommend.

Has anybody got a solution to this? I'm also facing the same issue.
go to settings - applications - your browser - clear defaults.
then click a play/YouTube link and just choose the corresponding app

Doesn't work...interesting thing is even after clear defaults from dolphin as well as stock browser, it only gives me these two options to choose from when I click on any youtube link,e.g. in FB. It never gives me an option to select youtube app.
I'm on Viking 5.1 | Android 4.1.2, although I'm sure the ROM should not matter. I remember it used to work on 4.0.4.

you can remove this, if you want
Chrome (this is browser, use opera for better performance)
Google Play Movies & TV (video player, there's so much option and better),
Google search(safe to remove., but you'll never better than this, so i recommend, keep it)
Google+(save to remove, if you need it, keep it, if not, it's safe removed
LG Tag+ (some kind like tag editor, should be safe)
Olleh app. (keep it, never heard it)
Olleh cs ( keep it, never heard it)
Olleh Market (like playstore i think, if you doesn't have playstore on your device, don't remove it)
Olleh Navi (it's like Google map, n safe to removed)
Olleh Touch Navi (it's like Google map, n safe to removed)
Talk (same like Google+)

Freeze for now
I highly recommend freezing the apps you wish to remove in Titanium Backup Pro first and then use the device for a few days to ensure there are no unwanted side effects. Some of the devices functions may rely on an app you choose to remove, even if it isn't obvious. The advantage to a freeze is simply that it will not start on boot up, nor will any of it's processes run in the background, and it is removed from the app drawer as well as any shortcuts will not show up. After that, you can choose to wipe the data and uninstall should you have no issues with an apps removal. You can also save a backup in TB Pro just in case.
Chrome, Google+, and Hangouts are safe to remove. Did this on my GS4.
Thanks all for the reply.
Actually i rooted my phone some months ago and than i deleted(not uninstalled) the Google chrome. I restarted my phone but unfortunately it stucked on the LG Logo while booting. Then I go to repair shop and he cost me 35 Dollars for repairing it.
Now I want to root it again and therefore I need serious replies from the experienced people. I don't wan to make my phone damaged again.

[Solution]Google sneaky bastards, default download manager over taken by google

My story on nougat stock rooted which is irrelevant. So one day Advance download manager app would not intercept downloads any longer using chrome or chrome beta or any other browser. This was driving me insane, factory reset showed to seem have fixed it where advance download manager would intercept downloads but updating like 40 apps through playstore it was hard to determine who was the culprit. So I did a fresh install last night and today I was finishing up completing everything on my phone to set it up like how I like it. Well well, I updated like 7 apps where prior ADM would intercept downloads and after the 7 app update ADM would not intercept downloads, I uninstalled all the 7 updates and updated one by one and guess what? ADM intercepted downloads when I uninstalled chrome and chrome beta updates!
"oh yea, I restored chome beta 68.0.3440.70 from a titanium backup, ADM intercepted downloads"
So I went through apk mirror and installed from what I had backed up from titanium backup chrome beta 68.0.3440.70 and in through into chrome beta 69.0.3497.24-349702452, chrome beta 69.0.3497.24-349702452 is the dead end for Advance download manager for intercepting downloads.
So, anything prior of chrome beta 69.0.3497.24-349702452 and "regular chrome" updates uninstalled, I am able to intercept downloads with advance download manager.
If anyone with this problem hope I can help.
Chrome Beta 68.0.3440.70 is the file you need.
I sent feedback to google through help & feedback oprion in chrome beta.
I sent the above typed.

Yup, and i CANNOT believe that there is only me and prob u that recognizes this absolutely irritating problem.
There has to be more ppl than 2 that uses chrome beta and a second downloader app.

I found this article when trying to find the solution for this problem in google. i just try to solve with Lucky Patcher (disable download manager), change xml , config chrome flags..... but no thing works..
And now i'm roll back to GC 68
Switching To Firefox AGAIN
Google ****ed up.
I tried resetting chrome and uninstalling, reinstalling adm. I lost my bottom navbar even and its back top.
I am now just using "copy link address" and if link is ONLY clickable, then I have to view the web in ADM browser. It SUCKS. thx for telling me this is chrome's fault. And hopefully tell me how to make the toolbar back at bottom. Peace out. Mozilla the way rn.

And and, v68 took over my adm app, I give up. I updated to latest gc. I don't know how they did it, but v68 took over my adm some how.
