[Q] Android TV box root and reflash, help - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I am new here and like most posting a message for the first time I hope it's in the correct forum section.
For the record I have always been pretty good at researching things and figuring things out for myself but my current issue has me puzzled. Here is the issue:
I purchased a chinese Vivobox i3 rougly a year ago and for the most part it has worked well but has recently fallen short on its functionality.
After a recent power outage I came to find that the mini - air mouse remote stopped working except for 3 buttons which I found strange. I immediately thought no big deal just flip the box over and push the reset button and all will be good except pushing and holding the reset button then plugging in power cord didn't do anything except display a "safe mode" message in the bottom left of the screen after it booted up. This still didn't fix my problem with the remote. It still didn't work.
I went out and bought a new track pad / keypad combo unit thinking my old one had simply died but it didn't work at all.
So I tried using a USB mouse (which I should have done before buying a new wireless keypad at the begining) and it worked but things got more bizzar.
Using my mouse I setup my box (internet connection etc.) and came to find that all my downloaded apps were gone ( probably got wiped from memory ) and navigated to the Google playstore and tried downloading an app. The download appears to start by showing a progress bar but the progress bar never moves and it doesn't download any files. It stays in download mode and doesn't download anything, its weird I can check my hotmail visit plenty of pages but it will not download any android apps. Its as though the android firmware is corrupted.
In short, the box appears to have lost remote control functions, and the android functionality is all screwed up.
So this brings me to my current situation, I figured I would visit the vendor's website and get the newest firmware and flash mybox in hopes that it would correct things. I visited the vendors support website (vivobox.co) but the site is no longer up and there are no files anywhere online for this box.
With no files available I thought to try and root it and load a custom rom but I can't get the box to boot into android recovery mode to install the necessary files . I tried all manual methods I could think of but this box will not allow a boot into recovery mode. I then went online and downloaded Amlogic SD card maker.exe. Tried to create a boot recovery SD card and that failed. I tried everything.
The only thing that kinda worked was forcing a boot from SD card condition by using the shorting 2 pins method on the memory IC on the board inside with an SD card containing a complete image and firmware package for a mitricom box (found on XDA), except it freezes 1/4 of the way through the update.
In short I need to do one of 2 things, 1) find a way to manually enter android system recovery and root it to install a custom rom or 2) find a file that I can force boot with a compatible firmware.
Here are the specs. on my Vivobox i3 if anyone has any suggestions or has encountered this before.

[Q] 2 DIN Car DVD HKHONDA S100 NISSAN

Dear , I recently purchased through ebay a Chinese brand device HK HONDA S100 series model I001 ( Android OS ) , see attachment .
The same presented several problems since its commissioning, the which at first were partially solved by the seller but then he has not answered me more , so when I'm drifting and equipment operating erratically. So I come to you in order to guide me on some issues .
Additional I put a front unit DVR camera which can be commanded from the 2DIN unit, it has a very erratic and not always recorded, damaged files, it displays the image the camera captures and records but not at certain times the screen does not respond to commands and many other rare alternatives, I guess it's the camera that fails.
In normal operation messages with errors and failures of applications ( twitter , GPS IGO, etc. . ) Presented for which I was sent the Android OS upgrade file ( I001.exe file).
Here other problems began , the " Spanish " ( my language ) Portuguese language is 95 % and 5% Spanish weird!
The screen began to lose images being colored striped background with audio right . This I solved installing the firmware again.
How I had no response from the seller I contacted the factory and they sent me error the C001-1.exe, WinC6.0 firmware file; told them that my computer has the Android OS and tell me that is not possible, never sold well.
Well, at this point no longer understand anything like me!
So I ask them to indicate if possible install your firmware WinC6.0, and I guess will be more balanced and have a better GUI.
Best regards.

[Q] Pure Android 4.2 2DIN Car radio front panel buttons not working

Hi everyone,
I need some help with my Android radio.
A couple of days ago i bought an Android 4.2 2DIN car radio: http://www.ebay.com/itm/191227453040

The buttons on the front panel at the side of the screen did function properly, but after a factory reset the buttons do not work anymore, and I can't get them to work. The only 3 things that do work are volume, power and cd eject.
How I managed to wreck it:
First thing I did, was getting root.
For that, I followed the instructions at this thread (using Root Master):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2660662
After a succesfull root, I forgot making a back-up
I installed "[root] live logcat": https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.livelogcat
After installing it, I restarted the device and I saw the logcat boot animation, but after the animation finished I always ended up with a white screen... (http://youtu.be/oPyfJUHzZXQ)
I managed to recover from this by executing a system recovery from recovery mode.
Now I have a functional rooted android device, but somehow the front panel buttons aren't working anymore.
I also tried "CarAudioService" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53678587&postcount=1179) but nothing gets logged.
System information:
MCU version: MTCB-GS-V1.91
Model: S07
Android version: 4.2.2_20140724
Kernel: 3.0.36+
Build: rk30sdk-eng4.2 20140724.11:11:18:04
Could anyone please advice me what to do?
Best regards,
Erik

Is there anyone who can help me with this problem?
How you did the system restore ?
Sounds like you used the wrong MCU file.

Thanks for your reply Warlold711.
What kind of strange was, is that I could execute a system restore without even putting any rom / image / MCU file on the system. So it restored something that was already on the device when bought... Is there a specific MCU I should try?
Does anyone else has an idea how to recover from this?
3514
Or if someone knows what MCU to use for this radio. I have searched the forums and found this thread but I haven't found out what MCU to use for sure.
* bump * Maybe someone knows the download link of the MCU 'MTCB-GS-V1.91' so I can re-apply it to my device?
After another search I've found the appropriate MCU at the following link:
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0BxmzvLRI7-eNeVA2SWkwM1pLZ28&usp=drive_web
I installed "V_2.02_GS_(20140827)" and now the physical buttons are working again!
Hello. I just watched your youtube video. Were you ever able to get live logcat to work correctly? Thanks.

Hi. Unfortunately I haven't. To be honest I didn't even retry after system recovery, scared of wrecking it again I didn't think it was worth trying again.
Playing DVD disc in fullscreen on Android 4.4 Car radio
I just replaced the factory installed radio with an Android 4.4 car radio unit with DVD player and Navigation. Everything seems to work fine, except the video playback from DVD discs. It seems that the video playback is in fullscreen mode. It has 2 black bars at the top and bottom, and the video seems squeezed vertically. Anyone has similar problem? Is there a fix for this? I noticed that in the video player, there's a button to resize the video screen, but there isn't one in the DVD player app. Can I replace the current DVD player with another one? If yes, which one and how? Thanks.

[Q][SOLVED] Need Stock Rom for K968/A600 - MTK6572 Chipset

Hi All! I just got a new phone... It's a Chinese phone with no apparent brand.
Unfortunately I tried to root it and while using SP Flash Tool and MK Droid Tools I bricked it , Now i've been trying for days flashing different roms for similar phones in the hopes that one will work. One kinda worked but was the wrong resolution and I couldn't use it... I don't even remember which one it was.
Before doing this I tried to back up my images, but I am an idiot and didn't do it right. I have a scatter file and some other images from my original rom... but nothing beyond the recovery partition. Here's the list of files I have from the original phone:
MT6572_Android_scatter.txt
preloader.bin
MBR
EBR1
uboot.img (renamed to lk.img)
boot.img
factory_NONmodified_recovery.img
nvram.bin
pro_info
protect_f
protect_s
seccfg
I have also attached the scatter file in case anyone finds it useful.
If anyone can help me find the missing files or a different factory image, I'd greatly appreciate it! Below are specific details about the phone... maybe there's one that you guys know about that fits it? Also, if i try a different rom... which parts of my original rom should I still flash in, and which parts of the new rom should I flash?
Thanks alot!!

I think it might take a while till i get any response, so still trying myself.... I'm looking around to see if anyone has a working phone that is like mine, but until then I'll still try roms for devices similar to mine, but i have a question, maybe I should post it on a new thread?
How do i find out what's going on whie the device is booting? it gets to the splash screen, i can get to recovery as well, but I want to know what's going on during the boot process... adb logcat does nothing but say -waiting for device-
Is there another way?
Thanks again!
I wasn't sure wether I should create a new post or just reply here, so i just went with reply
After looking I was finally able to get a dump of the stock rom from someone with an identical phone, and in the spirit of openness, I'd like to share it with you guys if anyone ever needs it.
Link: http://www.mediafire.com/download/9zkfz9n7hyiy8k6/A600_MT6572_ForFlashtoolFromReadBack.zip
You can flash this rom using SP Tools. Also, the phone will not boot immediately after flashing this rom... first you need to start the phone in (bootloader?) mode by holding the vol. Down and power. Once you're there do a factory wipe... technically this should be done in recovery mode, but idk how to do it with this rom because there's no "Yes" option when recovery asks you if you're sure about a factory wipe. Maybe it's hidden with some sort of key combo? idk, do it how you prefer.
Well, thanks, if you have questions let me know

Anyone know how to root an MStar (Kogan) Android TV?

I have a Kogan KALED55KU8000SZA 55-inch Smart TV - identified by My Device Pro as an "MStar Android TV" from "MStar Semiconductor", using the "arbutus" board and the "monet" hardware. It runs Android TV 5.1.1 ("Lollipop"), Build aosp_arbutus-userdebug 5.1.1 LMY47V 1.1.20170720.153235 test-keys. There is a hardware report attached in PDF, courtesy of the "Device Info HW+" Android application from Andrey Efremov.
I've asked elsewhere on this site about replacing Android TV with another Linux-based operating system (such as Ubuntu), however as I expected, it's looking like this might not be a realistic solution... So now I would like to "root" this "smart" television, in order to remove some of the rubbish which is included and set the "smart" television to either switch to HDMI "x" when I turn it on or automatically run Kodi/XBMC for Android when I turn the "smart" television on.
Courtesy of Xda Developers, I have thus far tried:
* -Key Root Master (MOD Version) 1.3.6, which crashes when I try to run the application;
* KingRoot 5.3.7, which does not seem to work (it counts up to 25% on the "Aquiring Root" screen, then tells me that "root failed");
* Framaroot 1.9.3, which tells me Your device seems not vulnerable to exploit included in Framaroot.
I can see that KingRoot supposedly has more "root" success via USB debugging, but I cannot seem to get the "developer" mode to appear because when I do the "click on build seven times" thing, nothing happens and no extra menus appear... The "smart" television has multiple USB ports and wireless (Wi-Fi) connectivity; I'd need to physically check but (Android) settings seems to think it has an ethernet port too,
Has anyone has any luck "rooting" these "smart" televisions?
Have U tried this.

Another solution is Plex TV which IMHO is superior to Kodi.
Plex apps available for all OS, or you can use a browser.
Obviously you need a server.
The new Kogan Android TV rocks or just use Chromecast & a device to drive it.
Sorry but best I can suggest.

Try 360 root, it work fine for me
any update
Hi gregoryopera,
Did you find any clues ?
I must thank you for all your post on internet, because you made me learn that your TV is a clone of mine, and I managed to find the mstar_upgrade.bin for yours, that include the google play files i was needed in order to make my tv little bit more clever ^^
I wasn't able to root mine, but as you can get a root access through ADB (thanks to the "user debug" state), you can already do many things..
from what i found, you could remove unwanted apk with this :
./adb connect #ip_of_tv#
./adb root
./adb connect #ip_of_tv#
./adb remount
./adb shell pm list packages
./adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.#copy-paste_package_name#
For launching specified apk at start, you could use Launch on Boot app, which didn't require a rooted devices
For info, after adding my tv device id to the https://www.google.com/android/uncertified/ page, and few hours of delay, i was able to use the google play, and then i was able to update google play services 14.7.99 (020400-223214910)
Now I fighting with it in order to use a bluetooth dongle (all drivers and files are already present in the system, but I'm unable to activate the bluetooth..)
Another point I'm looking at, is to add widevine drm support to it, since the original nexus player build.id=LMY47V was supporting it..
Could you please send me some picture of your system UI (I'm thinking about flashing my "philips" mstar arbutus tv with your "kogan" mstar arbutus firmware... philips created an incredible ****e for this tv, android settings hidden, home page is a philips store app suggestions loader (totally useless)...) or tell me where you may have post it already ?
many thanks,
Heyy ThAneb!
I have been facing similar problems with you guys. I know this is a somewhat old post but I was hoping how you set up adb in your tv? I cannot turn on developer mode so I don't really know how I go about doing it because evry other step to set it seems to require it to be on the dv mode.
Please tell how I can set it up.
Hi, I know it's a bit late but I managed to enter in developer mode, you need to connect an external mouse to do that, click several times till enable come back to the main screen and go in settings. It might show developer mode. I'm trying now to enable root mode and then change the build.

Test Point on Sony M4 Aqua (hard brick).

Update:
My phone was not recognized by the computer since the usb flex was broken, the data lines did not work, but the charging lines did.
Watch this video for a solution:
Hello and thanks for reading! The whole problem started with a bad rom, I flashed it and when I turn on the device, the basic things, Wi-Fi, data, etc ... did not work, but worst of all, the PC does not recognize it, for therefore I cannot flash again with sony's original rom. So, researching there I found that there is a way to fix this kind of problem with a method called a test point, but I only saw other devices and on mine I didn't find any information about this.
I found these images but I don't understand much...

Hi RenzoMag.
The testpoint method was used to force the phone in a "factory mode" (I don't know the exact terms), expecially useful for Mediatek based phones.
The point highlited on the images are the "communication lines" to direct access the e-MMC memory chip.

Hello, I had not seen an answer on my phone for a long time, I had that problem months ago, I tried everything for weeks and finally gave up and left it saved for lack of time ...
Do you have any idea of any solution for this device that was totally bricketed because of a bad rom?
Forgive me if I do not understand you or do not understand me, I am using google translator ...
Thanks for the reply!
Hi. Did you re-flashed rom with Sony tool or flastool?

The problem is that, the corrupt rom that is installed causes the computer not to detect the phone as a mobile device, try flashtool, sony companion, etc, but the same computer tells me "unknown device", detects that there is something but you don't know why, the rom's usb connection files will be damaged ... That is why my question about whether there is a test point for this device, because for other devices that if you can these types of problems are fixed that way. Do you have someone who knows a little more about this topic?
picture shows eMMC pinout, no test points
