Kernel sources - Released!!! Link up!! - Mi 3 General

Hi guys,
Finally, kernel sources have been released. Here's the link : https://github.com/MiCode/Xiaomi_Kernel_OpenSource/tree/cancro-kk-oss
Past :
After being fed up for long time, we have some good news to cheer about. And the news is from Hugo Barra again. I was going through YouTube and saw Hugo answering 2 people in the comments section about the kernel sources.
Q.1 by Ryan Berkeley -
"Redundant, because I asked this question on another youtube video of yours. Here's the question. When are the kernals going to be released? According to GPL, that needs to be released and we might get a sub forum on XDA for it? This phone isn't for me, but once the phone crosses the warranty stage, I'd like to see it last longer than a mere 2 years like my #lgoptimus2x"
Reply from Hugo : Mi 3 kernel source coming in the next few weeks, please stand by!""
Q.2 by Anish Pawar -
"When is Xiaomi releasing kernel sources for mi3?"
Reply from Hugo : "n a few weeks, we're really sorry about the delay! Has to do with the fact that Mi 4 is using the same kernel source, so we're just putting the finishing touches on what we plan to release.

About Hugo Barra's answer on Q2. That's what I've been suspecting long time ago. Well my thought was correct.

I'm a little skeptical to be honest... If mi3 shares the same kernel as mi4 I doubt they would want to release the kernel sources... They may not release the full source... Let's see how this goes!

All we can do is just hope that this time he keeps up his promise!!!Amen

thing is he gave both answers about a month ago, so "a few weeks" have already passed... anyway, let's hope they will eventually release the sources as they are supposed to.

Would be nice..

The frustrated dream of MI3.
It's been a month since Hugo Barra made those comments (in "a few weeks", he said) and still no source code.
Is now reaching the end of the trial period of the Android development for MI3 on this website.
Developers are already getting tired of it.
And users like me are already planning to resell the mobile we thought, with your design and specifications and knowing it would be released "soon" the source code would be one of the best phones of the moment.
For that, stay Xiami no sales, no customers, no developers and only (yes) MIUI fanatics. Nothing more.
Sad end to what could have been a nice story. Thanks, Xiaomi, frustrate many dreams. The source code will come when people least expect or need: when developers of the best roms third have already thrown in the towel. :crying:

Damn, I just got this phone coming from Optimus G pro. I was hoping for the great development considering the hardware this phone has. Hoping to get the source code soon.

Very selfish move Hugo
For me cyanogenmod is far better than miui of course miui has an eye candy looks but uses a lotta ram to run.come on men 2015 is coming release the kraken now I mean the source code.please we beg you not every one like MiUi

I think they will only release the kernel sources after the Miui with Android Lollipop base. They know that if they release sooner the Cm will take over Mi3 with Cm12

Spam Hugo barra?
How about spamming him on google plus? not many comments in there.....

That's because they keep getting deleted.

Well that's good news for Mi3 owners (if it actually comes true). It be would be nice to see the Mi4 kernel source get released considering their the same thing. But it seems like Xiaomi is going to release Mi3 sources but keep Mi4 closed. Yay
Sent from my Xiaomi Mi4

they're stopping mi3 pre-sales in my country..guess they're goin ready for mi4 here...
well..not really in my interest...
guess they will release it afterward

Patience ????? Xiaomi has Crossed Patience Limit and Its Reaching Alarming Point....They are just breaking GPL Rules...They exist here once if they enter US selling this device it will be banned within no time without kernel sources under GPL...

If Xiaomi will sell their product in the US, Apple will definitely eat them. Lol! Mi Launcher really looks like the iOS launcher and Apple will definitely sue them for that. I know Xiaomi knows it thats why they keep it in Asia, and that's why they're not a good follower of the GPL, coz if they're in the US they'll definitely need to release the code after the device. Tsk!

Sooo no chances guys?

Hugo bara is ignorant, smiling, talking about youth and positive energy ....etc
But we the users don't give a single f... about it we need the friging sorcery codes and we'll be full of youth and energy guaranteed.

Hello Photon owners.
The time has come to flood Motorola's forum requesting:
1. The Photon be added to http://opensource.motorola.com as an android device
2. For Googlorola to release the source code to the linux kernal as well as the complete build environment. (This is your chance to help get dev's to work on why the 4G break after the unlock, and to help get ready to unleash the pure win out of this device "AOSP")
3. Our bootloaders unlocked or an update to unlock our bootloaders. (We already have this I know. Its what we originally asked for. Personally I could give a **** less, but its all about consistency.)
So far like 4 or 5 people have posted there. we need everyone to take 5 -10 minutes out of their day, and flood that forum like no ones business. The faster we get what we have requested, the faster we can start taking full advantage of what this amazing phone is capable of.
Btw... heres the link to the thread https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/55574?tstart=0
There is a charming forum mod over there named Mark. He doesn't know his head from his ass. He's probably sweating losing his job as soon as Google really steps in.
I'm gonna do this but hope is low because even though google bought motorola motorolas still going to operate like the same ol motorola google isn't taking over manufacturing they just bought em for the patents who knows maybe in the future they will

plan to get kernel source

hi guys as some of you know a few of us are trying to port various roms to the htc one max, however this is proving very difficult as we do not have the kernel source code which is the main thing stopping us. Recently i have tweeted at @HTCDev on twitter asking them if and when they plan to release them, and i figured that many voices are stronger than 1 so if lots of people tweet @HTCDev we might have a standing chance of getting them just an idea !
you might have seen the other thread from which involved emailing HTC about the same thing and we did not get much of response there.. we can surely do this, but don't know if that will help
@PradeepVizz 16s
@htcdev hello, when can we expect the kernel sources for the MAX to be available for downloads?

Yo whaddup whaddup pradeep.... Yo so to everyone and all I'm back! Sorry I took a little holiday break from posting and what not lol.. So I officially went out and bought a brand new hefty solid state drive some new ram and a nice little dev box and installed my favorite Linny dis Fedora! It's all set up for strictly Android development and Android development only!!!!!!!!!! Anyone who is down to do some work with me for all variants I'm specifically Verizon but I'll work on all of them with you guys feel free to hit me up..
As for the kernel source I spoke directly to Shauna from HTCDev on the phone as she called me twice until she actually got me cuz I lol screen my calls and when realized it was her again I answered.. When anyone sends an email through HTCDev "tell us what you want" it goes directly to her, so we actually established a relationship haha.. She told me for every email I sent and for all the emails I encouraged you guys to send that she pings corporate. Corp then sends them the source and they go ahead and upload it. She basically told me not to expect anything until as early as January 2nd when they start coming back from vacation from the holidays.. So it is coming, they are fully aware that it needs to be posted and they are indeed working on it for us..
So yes like I said I'm ready to go so hit me up peeps.....

welcome back mate! Hope you had a great vacation! Happy new year to you and everyone around!
Excited to know your dev setup, I have got virtual box for Ubuntu 12.10 ready for the same. Thanks for the update. I am no kernel dev but want to start kicking things and yeah got some great support from you and the other guys.
There was another dev who left the device a few days ago, not sure what the reason was
The worst part i suspect is going to be after KitKat Update, which is like about 1 month away and we need to repeat the waiting again for that :/
Thanks for update! keep rocking!!!
Well as long as we get some type of source and better it being 4.3 source I'm sure Flyhalf won't have to much of a problem building us a solid CM11 using this sources.. I believe its pretty much what he did with the original HTC One but this was also on Verizon which is what I'm on.. Either way we should hopefully be getting somewhere very soon!!

hey all! how have you been? the kernel source situation is getting a bit ridiculous! we are about to get the 4.4 update in a few weeks and still don't have the source code for 4.3, i can't imagine the wait we are going to have to go through for the 4.4 source code!
Yep. I have sent about 27 request to HTC Dev. The Answer is the same. "We have escalated your issue to Tier 2 for "Tracking".
I responded back saying.. I don't care about tracking.. I want to know when they will honor the GPL for release of the kernel.
The answer is "Sorry we do not have a ETA for the release of the kernel. Please keep an eye on our htcdev.com site and the sources will be posted there when released."
So I took to twitter and have been calling them out there asking for GPL compliance for the HTC One Max Kernel Source for both 4.3 now and 4.4 upon deployment.
Newest Email after I have been raising hell on twitter.
Dear Deadphoenix,
It is really nice to hear from you.
Deadphoenix, I totally understand what you are saying and in this case this situation, due to policies, needs to be handle by a higher department and that is why that I am asking you for your contact number, this will help me in order to pass this to the right department.
Please let me know this information and I will be more than glad to help you with this.
Have an amazing Wednesday, Deadphoenix.
Thanks for the effort mate
Here is my most recent email I sent to HTC Dev:
Hello,
From information I gathered from the Free Software Foundation (authors of the GPL) about this (as well as some other folks I know that have a better legal background than I), and I compiled the following information for you.
Brett Smith at the Free Software Foundation said, in response to your recent claims that the GPL provides for a delay: "HTC's reading is outrageous -- we honestly thought no respectable company would have the gall to publicly make this argument. A delay of 90-120 days is not reasonable, considering that they must already have the source code.". Clearly, then, the authors of the GPL did not intend for any provision for a delay to be present.
Other legally-trained acquaintances commented that allowing a delay there would easily lead to reductio ad absurdum -- i.e., if an arbitrary delay could be inserted in this contract (which HTC agreed to upon releasing the binary), then that would imply that an arbitrary delay could be inserted in any contract. In most legal cases, it has been shown that if something can be read as either being absurd or not being absurd, the not-absurd reading is the one legally taken.
You mentioned 3(b) of the GPL, which begins that you must "accompany [the binary distribution] with a written offer, valid for at least three years [...] a complete machine-readable copy of the corresponding source code", and it seems that the second clause there -- "valid for at least three years" is the crux of it. Currently, the distribution does come with an offer, but the offer is not valid -- when I asked for the source code, HTC was unable to provide it for me, claiming instead that it would be given to me at an unspecified point in the future. This is not acceptable.
I note also that legal interpretations of a work tend to consider not just the strictly written details, but the intent; when details are in dispute, the overall intent is then referred to. The goal of the GNU GPL is to enhance the freedoms of anyone who receives the software, and to force one who might modify the software and distribute it for their own purposes to publish their changes back to the community. The GNU GPL does not have any provisions for temporarily withholding source for competitive or other reasons; the agreement that one must make when one distributes a binary is that one must also distribute source. Not doing so at the same time would be a violation, not just of the letter, but of the spirit of the contract; the goal of the GNU GPL is to enrich the freedoms of the commons through which software is distributed.
Given these four points -- the FSF's reading, the reductio ad absurdum, the letter of section 3(b) of the GPL, and the spirit of the GPL as a whole -- it is clear that the GPL requires that HTC release the source for the kernel at the same time or earlier than the binary. To that end, I request that you, within 24 hours, provide me with a link to the source for kernel of the HTC One Max 4.3 as well as the 4.4 Kernel upon release of the binary to the public.
It is clear from the reading and intention of the GPL that HTC is currently in violation of the GPL requirements of making the Kernel Source available. I have a cc'd copy of this message prepared for the media outlets as well in anticipation of HTC's denial again of the Source Code. If you are unable to assist me please escalate my message to the appropriate authority capable of making the decision to comply with GPL.
Sincerely and Seriously,
hopefully, somebody who reads and speaks english will get your email..
nicely worded!

Good luck with that sir. From everything I've ever heard about this, it seems that HTC thinks that a 60-120 day grace period is acceptable, and that's all there is to it.
By all means though, fight the good fight. I've just resigned myself to heckling their marketing team about it on Google +.
What you're doing is probably more "constructive" though...

[Xiaomi Mi5] How my dream phone Mi5 became a nightmare for me!!

How my dream phone mi5 became a nightmare for me!!
Mi5 was my dream phone, I had created a post at miui forum...
But 10 days and mi5 became a nightmare for me!!
I had fell in love with speed and beauty of the phone, with hybrid case it look so cool. People were jealous of it. But happy time ended soon...
Don't go for looks, they deceive you...
And what do i need to say about build quality, aluminum gets dent on simple force. You have to use super hybrid case.
The mi Protect Scam
I called the Mi Assist for activation of mi protect, but it wasn't activated even after calling 5 times. When I went service center, they don't have any spares parts for the mi5 phone... Why the hell you sell mi protect when you don't even have the provisions. Funny thing was mi assist marketing department, called me to insure my other devices... I always said first activate for what I paid for... Mi protect is a scam, indeed.
Just a hype, no global stable ROM for Mi 5
Mi 5 is your flagship, how come Xiaomi team are so lethargic about global ROM. If you can't be loyal to global users then why you made fake claims and why Xiaomi released the phone for Rest of the world.
The Amount of defective Mi5 phones are too high....
My camera had defect, home button wasn't responsive to soft press, over heating,I waited with hopes for updates but i lost mind when physical defect were discovered in camera. Im freelancer which demands me to use front camera for live assistance. My assignments are international (European) so phone is the only way of getting connected anytime and anywhere. Clients started complaining about white dots on my videos and phone heated too much while live assistance. It made impossible for me to continue and which spoiled my ratings.
I immediately went mi service center, thank god engineer at service center confirmed the defect in phone. The engineer tested for water damage and physical damage. After confirming device problem, he issued fault in device memo. Which helped me to request for replacement. It was luckily 10th day, from the date of purchase... Finally, successfully request was submitted.
Bluedart guy came within an 24 hour and picked up the phone.
The replacement product was also defective!!!! Xiaomi dont have any polices for get a defective replacement!
BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE.
I'm without a phone and also I sold my iPhone 5s for Mi5!! You can refer my post where I mentioned about selling iPhone 5s for Mi5. Thought iPhone wasn't great but going for Mi 5 was a mistake.
Spoke to customer care of mi India but they are hopeless and clueless.
They kept me on hold for asking trivial information, which wasn't related to my problem. Just for the sake of passing time. They keep on hold and after coming back from hold they speak as if they are talking for first time. Im fedup of the harrasment. I even said to deduct shipping cost and refund me the balance amount but they are so rigit.
The service which mi india provides is a pure harrasment.
I wish mi.com had refund policy and I move away from this hell. I'm disappointed and without further loss... im sure mi phones are having high chances of being defective as only lower variants are available which are unsold stock of china.
I can't afford this to be repeated.
But let's face it, Mi won't give refund. We all have to learn something from here. And beware of the mi policies and services.
There are too many problems in Mi5. Xiaomi need to fix what it can via software updates, ASAP. Also, this is a honest review for mi 5 which will help many buyers to know the real face of mi5 and mi. Only the engineer at service center was indeed helpful, I accept that. No doubts about other products, but people need to know the honest reviews not just fanboys flaunting just cause of getting forum credits at miui forum. Cause we build expectations from it and get disappointed.
The miui forum has hardly any use, just legal spammers for credits. When its time to help, they turn deaf ears. Very few helpful mods, which are hardworking....
Hope this helps users before making decision for Mi 5and also an eye opener for Xiaomi...
XDA is great, I missed you.

Mate, can you please elobrate??
This doesn't sound very good. Hopefully your experience isn't encountered by others
unfortunately, this seems to be the real situation with so appreciated Mi 5 at the moment.
I was so eager to read each news and announcement about it, I was waiting for a really great phone with affordable price for so long, and in the end, it seems that all of us got just a big hype around quite troubled phone.
some of the issues with the phone could be theoretically solved in the future:
- shaky video recording could be improved by pairing EIS with existing OIS
- overall photo quality could be improved by using some 3rd party app and/or different camera driver
- not-so-widely adored MIUI could be replaced with some custom ROMs after kernel source is released
- one could try to be more cautious and not brake/bend the phone
- Xiaomi support could start acting as a useful service
- useless MIUI spam forum could be closed and people could get their unlock code without a need to post >500 "great"/"awesome"/"cool" replies on the newest Mi 5 screenshot
but, for some of those points Xiaomi has to change its own policy.
that's something, I'm afraid, we will not see in at least next 3 to 5 years...
had the phone from day no such issues.

I agree, mainly, in that point. What a sh*t* forum!
Same here
I´m very disappointed too.
There are a lot of small things that bother me:
Alarm doesn't work unless you interact with the phone (even hours later)
Delayed synchronization on almost all application, (notifications coming all at once after 10 min, WIFI or 3G)
Camera focus working really bad ( tried with different applications, all of them with bad results )
Contacts or Calls stopping working from the beginning
Spotify doesn't play next song unless you open the app
Even I have problems connecting to Xiaomi Band 1s
I had a Galaxy S3 and a Nexus 4 before and these things are very annoying. I have to use another mobile to wake up in the morning....
I can't wait to install cyanogenmod.
Anyway I'll never buy a Xiaomi again, I hate MIUI and after all this I prefer to pay more and have a good experience with a nexus.

What a surprise !
I have another big problem with this phone. After I made a factory reset the phone got locked and needs to be activated. The device is associated with an existing Mi ID account that I never registered and is completely unknown to me, as is of course the password.
I've spent hours on their forum to get some answers on how to reassociate my phone to my own ID number. So far with no sucess.

After a long time I'm posting on XDA. I use to own Samsung galaxy grand and s2...

It's okay to complain, but please do it reasonable.
Cut out all emotional crap from your topic and try again. But stick to facts and be reasonable.
Just as example, if you wonder what I am talking about.
->"The miui forum has hardly any use, just legal spammers for credits" ... 100% your opinion, nothing more, nothing less.
-> "There are too many problems in Mi5." ... 100% your opinion.
How could the same look better.
You could say: I was not able to find any useful information on en.miui.com, as most appeared to me as spam. I was not able to find what I was looking for [ state what you were looking for in here]
And instead of the very general and 100% stupid comment of too many problems.
You could have written a: I encoundered these problems [ list of problems ], a good amount of people have the same [ link to topics, stating similar problems.]
Why is this important:
I think, you made a bad experience and would like to warn people from making the same mistake, that's very kind of you!
But you achieve more if you stay to facts and leave out emotions and 100%-pure opinions.
That way you really help people, because they can make their own judgment based on facts you provided.
... what you wrote looks like a baby crying, to me at least.
@alfay0m3ga i have solution for 1st,2nd,4th, and maybe 3rd and 5th
For 1,2,4 just go in recent app and do the opposite of clearing an app, just drag down one and you will see an orange lock on left top of it
Then you will have alarms, spotify and syncronization
For the others try to unlock bootloader and change rom with xiaomi eu one

Honor Re-Opens bootloader Unlocking on a Limited Trial for XDA

Honor's recent decision to end bootloader unlocks for their phones upset the entire community, us included, and we've been working feverishly to get them to change the decision. That said, it takes time for complaints to climb the ladder of such a big company, and we've had to settle for baby steps. :fingers-crossed:
We asked Honor for the reason behind this action and this is what they said:
"\The unlock code application service was closed on May 24th for all Huawei/ Honor products as a security measure and to avoid issues caused by ROM flashing. The decision to close the page ensured Huawei/ Honor could continue to provide an excellent user experience for all global fans.

XDA Developers are actively engaged in software development and they constantly provide valuable suggestions to optimize Honor products. Based on their feedback, that unlocked bootloaders make it easier for them to develop and create, Honor has decided to re-open bootloader unlock on an exclusive number of codes to the XDA Developer community. :highfive:
The unlock codes are available for download exclusively to XDA Developers on a first-come-first-served basis via this online form....Update: thank you to all that applied for an unlock code. We are no longer taking requests. Unlock codes will be sent out in batches, starting the week of 25 September and continuing until the end of the year. Further instructions will go out via XDA PM asap. . XDA users can apply for the codes using the form and all applicants will have the opportunity to share their feedback. It might take several weeks to receive an unlock code after requesting one, but we'll work with Honor to expedite the process as much as possible.
XDA will continue to work with Honor to give users a strong voice when decisions are made that affect their user experience. Finally, they had this to say:
Honor phones and systems have gone through rigorous testing and improvements, which is why Honor is able to offer great products at good prices for global digital natives.

Yes.
This is great! +1xp to Honor!
Sent from my kminiltexx using XDA Labs
Applied for the Code hope they will provide
Well I am a Huawei owner and I already have my code. But I would like to still thank XDA for pushing this, and actually doing something.
Really hoping Huawei will come up with a solution.
To be fair, I kinda understand them. As it is right now, the OS on the phone is way too fragile, and you can end in a permanent brick way too easy.
But that is something they should fix on their end and not punish users for wanting to have control over these great devices.
Like, I love my Mate 10 Pro. It's one of the best on the market I believe. And hell, I am ready to purchase a Mate 20 (Pro?) if it comes out. But only, if we get custom OS support. Don't get me wrong, I actually like EMUI, and I totally don't get the complaints about EMUI. Trust me. If you complain about it, go and try Touchwiz. You will know hell. However, at some point, Huawei will stop providing updates or will focus on later models. At that point, I would still like to stay 'fresh' and have a lean OS. I had an S3 LTE, a Note 2, Note 4, LG G4, LG G Pro 2, and Cyanogen/Lineage and the others have given these devices new life.
Ps.: tl;dr: If we get custom roms, I keep buying them, my family will buy them, my friends will buy. If not, well, we all go to other brands.
This isn't just spitting in the face of users right?
Hope they change the decision and permanent opening bootloader again.

Well I for one do NOT understand them. It's absolutely NONE of their business what we (who paid good money for OUR phones!) do with the devices! If we brick them or whatever breaks - it doesn't concern Huawei at all since it's not covered by any kind of warranty after we unlock the bootloader.
I bought the View 10 ONLY because of the Honor Open Source program and of course right after I got the damn thing everything shut down.
I for one will NOT support a company that treats their paying customers like dirt - this is my first and most definitely LAST Huawei/Honor device unless they do an about face, let us unlock our bootloaders and support custom roms. ?
This is great news. I'm glad that the talks with them went somewhere. Good job guys.
While I truly appreciate the effort from everyone involved in this action, this doesn't help anything. If the devices are not open for everyone, they are not open for anyone.
This is the equivalent of not escalating a situation with an angry customer and giving him what he wants, a special treatment, while all the others won't get it.
That's not fair at all.

This is hopefully the first step to get this decision reversed at a later stage.
And regarding your analogy comparing this to an angry customer - the people who mainly are concerned by this decision are the people who would come to XDA forums anyway. This decision is more like showing special treatment to a target demographic of angry customers than a single angry customer.
what about Kernel Source codes etc for more recent devices like honor play? are they planing on releasing any?
I'm glad to see a little wiggle room on this. But as Huawei arguably has one of the top devices on market (or so I keep hearing about the P20 Pro) it also starts to make sense.
Here's hoping a good balance can be found.

Except you don't, in the EU at least, inspite of Honour / Huawei claims software modification, including unlocking bootloader doesn't invalidate your hardware warranty.
Good to see. Well done to XDA for sticking to their guns and getting Honor to soften their stance.
Hopefully if just the start and it can become a permanent policy and the Huawei side of the business to do the same. (which I heavily doubt they will
) My P20 Pro would be a perfect phone if I could get from EMUI to stock
Hello, XDA
I am a developer, can I get this benefit to unlock the bootloader of my device Honor?
They must have seen aggresive concurrent Xiaomi taking some market share
what about lock code on Honor V10? some people write about not working old codes on ROM FW>=163 version. Via this service, Huawei sent new code for new room or include downgrading to old room warning with code?

While that IS true you'll have a hard time getting any repairs done once you unlocked it - and besides, my hardware doesn't break due to me f*cking up by unlocking and flashing custom roms etc. If someone flashes a bad kernel and blows their chip due to overclocking or what have you the repair centers can still tell and refuse a warranty repair.
Either way you look at it - letting us unlock our devices does NOT cost them anything, but it will keep us buying their phones.

Of course they may not, but it's worth an attempt.
For Redmi Note 11 the kernel did get released after a petition like this. Might've been a coincidence but might've also very well been the trigger for Xiaomi to release it.
It's worth a shot at least. Signing takes less than a minute and is free
