(Mod)Improve performance eliminate lag decrease heat with CTT MOD (updated 2/11) - G3 Android Development

Compatible with most ROMs and variants
This is a WIP
New thread for marshmallow versions located HERE
New instructions please follow them exactly
CPU Thermal Throttling Mod The best mod to Increase performance and eliminate lag and less heat while charging and on the phone and in daily use
Featured in many ROMs like Skydragon , Xtralite G3, Slickrom G3 and Cloudys ROM as an add on just to name a few
Just read the comments and you'll see this is a must have mod
Compatible with all ROMs and all lg g3 variants
Here's a video testimonial about the mod by @KiaTheKing be sure to check it out and give him a thumbs up
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8iQltQK-co
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/development/to-bring-ctt-mod-to-g4-t3183858
To all rom and kernel dev. feel free to use my mod just please give proper credit thanks
What I did is create a flashable zip that changes your thermal throttling I tweaked it so that the cpu doesn't throttle down so fast. Stock throttles you at 60° C down to 1.5 GHz with the first bump down. I've changed the first bump down to 70°C down to 2.34 on the first zip and 75°C on the second zip and 80° C on the third zip also I changed the next two bump downs, but I left the remaining four bump downs stock so there's no risk of this burning your phone up
I've also changed the temperature thresholds for the battery and the CPU/LCD in an effort to lower overall temps without effecting the performance any and all feedback is greatly appreciated
I'm just trying to make this mod the best it can be so thank you for your patience
Just a little FYI most custom kernels don't start throttling until 80° C
INSTRUCTIONS- First navigate to system/etc and scroll down till you find thermal-engine-8974.config, thermal-engine, thermald.conf and thermald-8974.config if you have them you might also have one 99th that ends in default copy them to a place on your sd card some ROMs only have one or two files that's alright still copy them so you have your originals saved then DELETE your old files and flash my thermal mod in recovery and wipe the caches dalvik/cache and reboot. Please let your phone go thru a couple of battery cycles for this mod to really settle in
If you want to go back to stock just navigate to system/etc and replace the modified ones with the ones you saved to your sd card and your back to stock.
New versions are compatible with all ROMs and should decrease heat improve battery life without decreasing performance
The first 5 do not have the 2.34 step down which are compatible with any rom

What I did here is create a flashable zip that changes your thermal throttling I tweaked it so it doesn't throttle down so fast. It also allows you to change the thermals to what ever you want using an app like 3c toolbox formally android tuner or another kernel app after flashing my modified thermal zip
Instructions- first you can do it one of 2 ways
First you can go to system/etc and scroll down till you find thermald.conf and rename it thermald.conf.bak so you have your original saved then flash my thermal mod in recovery or just flash my thermal mod and if you ever want to go back I've also made a revert to stock zip
I suggest doing the first method as the original is from a Verizon phone and the oringinal thermals may vary from model to model
Here is the modified thermal - https://www.dropbox.com/s/ujcs2vzwdr2hbk0/thermalmod.zip?dl=0

How do you know your custom settings won't burn the motherboard down, melt the battery or cause a nuclear meltdown?

Nuclear meltdown maybe lol but the rest no I've had the settings since I got the phone and rooted it which has been a couple of months now and also had the same settings on my g2
To give you an example dorimanx kernel doesn't start throttling till the cpu reaches 80°c then bumps the cpu down one notch. Lg starts throttling at 60°c and bumps it down to 1.5 GHz what I did is the first bump down happens at 70°c and down to 2.26 then proceeds from there if you want to see all the rest just open thermald.config with a text editor and you can see
I left the last three bump downs stock so I highly doubt you'll have any type of meltdown

You should put that in OP that you've tested the settings and they're safe to use.
I saw that LG force shuts down the phone when CPU reaches 120C LOL my laptop shuts down at 100C

I think it didn't worked for me. I did'nt flashed. I tried it without because TWRP is not installed on mine.
One file is called differently on my G3. The thermal-engine-8974.conf is called thermal-engine-8974-default.conf. And I can't the original thermal-engine.conf. I changed the permissions of alle the files to rwxrwxrwx.
My benchmark scores are the same as before.
Is there any way to get it working without the flash?

[Q] Screen won't turn on, and buttons did not work

Hi. I'm using a rooted Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100G, running on stock Jelly Bean 4.1.2 with Blazing Kernel v10 by Ryuinferno.
Ever since i rooted my phone, my phone wont respond to any buttons, but it is definitely running because it is hot and the battery is drained at a fast rate. The screen remained off and i had to do a battery pull to restart the phone. But I have been pulling out the battery way too many times and i am getting tired of it. I have tried installing wakelock detector to see if i can find out the cause of the problem. But I had to do a battery pull to turn on my screen, and by doing that the stats are all gone. Is there any suggested solution that i can do? I dont want to do a factory reset on my device. I suspect that there is a problem with my Trickster MOD or SetCPU profiles. These are my profiles:-
1. Screen off
CPU 600 - 300, Governor lulzactive
Priority 70
2. Charging AC
CPU 1200 - 300, Governor smartassV2
Priority 60
3. Battery <= 20%
CPU 600 - 300, Governor lulzactive
Priority 50
4. Battery <= 40%
CPU 1008 - 300, Governor lulzactive
Priority 40
5. If all of these are true(Screen on and Screen unlocked)
CPU 1008 - 300, Governor smartassv2
Priority 30
Is there anybody out there who can help me?
thanks in advance
Turn off phone by pressing power button for 10 seconds . battery stats and wake locks stay in RAM and because they have battery RAM remains almost intact and nothing disappear so you can check them when phone is on

Yeah, your phone is experiencing SOD's (screen of death). It can happen for a couple of reasons. You could be looking down the right path for your profiles, if no one else is experiencing them with the same kernel as you. It can be a kernel bug, but if no one else is experiencing the same issues it'll be your setup. Start reading up on what causes a SOD in terms of governor profiles, there are certain do's and don'ts. As I don't use the same governors (or kernel) as you, I can't pinpoint your problem. Droidphile (xda user) has made a great post explaining 'kernel governors, i/o schedulers, CPU tweaks' or something to that effect. Good place to start reading

i think i found out the cause of the problem. Apparently stock rom do not provide some kind of code to prevent SOD. It seems that i have to use AOSP rom or revert back to stock kernel. Is there any kernel that supports stock rom that u can recommend to me??
Hum...stock ROMs shouldn't suffer from SOD, so wipe it all out (or even nuke it) and don't worry, it's not gonna happen again

Hmm that's what I thought too. But before I rooted mine, after the update to 4.1.2, I was having a SOD on average once every two days over the course of a month after the update. No idea why, but it's part of the reason why I rooted it. Tried a factory reset and was still having problems. Didn't nuke it as that requires root and I figured I may as well run a custom ROM as well if I was rooting.
Were you on custom before the JB jump?
Nevermind, you weren't even rooted.
Dalvik might be the key here.

Theoretically, stock kernel and ROM is the most stable combination you could have. That's what Gaston was saying, and I agree. The only problem is that in your case (and mine previously), it wasn't. You can try tweaking your profiles, but you already have minimum frequency set to 300 MHz. You don't have 100MHz enabled do you?

Make a nandroid backup, then do a total wipe, flash the kernel and and see if it still occurs before setting your profiles. Then when you're done testing you can at least restore the backup, and you'll know if the SOD's are caused by your profiles or the kernel not playing nice.

That is unlucky indeed, although I have seen it once before. (It was my mum's brand new S2, second day since she'd bought it and got a SOD. Rather than let me troubleshoot it, she returned it for a new one.) Have you tried running a custom ROM with its stock kernel? Something that's stable, say RootBox 4.0. That was rock solid for me.
You're mucking around with non-standard CPU settings/profiles/etc & you're honestly wondering why you're getting SOD's ? Set everything back to stock frequencies/settings & start again, only make changes very slowly/incrementally (25MHz at a time, for example) until you find out what works with the CPU in your phone (this is often quite variable from device to device). Do this for every phone state given you've been running 5 different profiles. Don't try to work out what works with or set all profiles at once; start with screen on/unlocked, (I.E when you're using the phone) get that right, then do the others in turn.
There's been a bit of overthinking going on thus far methinks.

At first I thought there might be an error in the way i set my CPU or the Kernel. I did a nandroid backup, and i did a fullwipe. At that time, my phone is running on stock rom 4.1.2 and Blazing Kernel. I did not install SetCPU so I dont think i tweaked the settings for the CPU settings, but Im still getting SODs. Then I tried doing a full wipe again, this time using stock rom stock kernel. and i am still getting it. Since it is all stock i dont think there is any way i adjusted the frequencies......

[KERNEL](11/01)[KK][Shift Kernel][AOSP] Linaro GCC 4.7.4

Welcome to Shift Kernel
Here we have custom toolchain build Linaro 4.7.4 Aosp custom kernel.
This is based on the Cyanogenmod SMDK4412 updated source.
Kernel uses STweaks which should be installed as a system app with the zip as it's included. If it doesn't just download and install
Starting with 5.0 this kernel supports all AOSP KitKat ROMS for the I777/959G
Downloads: Shift
Also feedback is very welcome. Also I will CONSIDER requests if I find it useful and not too strenuous to implement. Again Enjoy yourself guys!!!!
Thanks goes out to @ZaneZam for the amazing zzmoove that is included that we all love. @dorimanx for a little help and his amazing source for the i9100. If you thank me, please take the time to go thank him as well because without him some of this would never be possible as it helped me understand the extent to which some of this must go to function as it should. PLUS, he's an AMAZING Dev, Get over there already, and of course @gokhanmoral (Siyah Kernel) who without some of his early work none of this would be possible. He is the master Dev when it comes to the S2 community, even if we don't see the I9100 work over here we are forever in his debt @razen_kain for countless hours of testing and dealing with my lip when things are wreaking havoc @TheGeekyNimrod for testing CWM, unsuccessful or not, it is still extremely helpful
If I forgot you, just say so

Just for future reference having this feature activated will cause the battery to discharge at a much higher rate, even when idle. The knock code is optimized for the G2/G3, and while the N5 is based on the G2 it too suffers from battery drain because the screen is always "looking" for the knock.
All that being said, it is a really cool feature. Great job getting your kernel up and running, rogersb!
Excellence. Thanks for this effort. Thanks for not giving up!
Going to keep an eye on this thread as you move forward with it. Does this give us the option to set a separate sleep profile from the awake profile in Stweaks? I remember that from using AJK with an old 4.2.2 rom, and it really made a big difference (at least it seemed) in battery life, not running the normal profile when the screen was off, or phone was in deep sleep.

By all means take your time. I'm in no rush for special kernel features. I've tried building kernels in the past and know how big of a pain it can be at times. So dev on, and we'll be here waiting to try it out.:good:

You have a link to the kernel with this feature so I can look for the source? I've never heard of this but sounds nice and possible very useful but I I worry this mat be an issue with the SOD(sleep of death) issue from the AJK kernel. Don't get me wrong, I love his 4.9 kernel but stopped using just for that reason
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2110542
There's the link. I've been running v4.9 ever since I started using CarbonRom (prior to SlimKat). Never had SOD issues. Maybe because of the profile I used or the way I tuned it. AJK took some getting used to with all the available options. I don't know how advanced it is to implement in a kernel though. I imagine it's no easy task. I could do it now using SETcpu, but I just prefer Stweak, hints why I asked about the option.
I wish I knew more about kernel building to help implement some requests, but it's beyond my knowledge. That's why I leave it to all you fine folks.

Reuploaded. Sorry but updates may be frequent untill everything is working as should but I think that is only BLN that is left. I'm working to try and get that straightened out. Everything else appears to be running smooth and I've been getting great battery life. I added 4 or 5 more governors and a few io schedulers. Anything not working please report. Thanks for support and patience. This stuff is hard lol
Barely optimized but over 12. I'll take that all day

Probably separate. Some people probably want to stock kernel. Idk....

FEB-9-15 [] Post_boot tweaks - An *interactive* boost

Drop this file in your /system/etc folder, replacing the stock one. Cleaned up, and modified to work with a stock kernel or lean kernel.
Please open up the file, and read some of the notes I added, so you know what this does and how to change it if you so desire. It is very basic and straightforward.
Also, please remember one thing, if you want to go to the stock kernel, simply change any words in the scripts from "interactiveX" to "interactive".
Recommended lean kernel 3.16 with these scripts.
Designed to work with ALL Galaxy Note 3's running touch wiz 4.4.2 ROMs and running lean kernel or stock kernel. Other kernels are not guaranteed due to the voltages applied.
This will make a huge difference in performance and battery. Been using this (developed by me) for a long time now.
Summary:
*I/O optimization
*tuned interactive parameters
*fixed sysfs permissions for cpu's (root now has full control of sysfs tuneables)
*GPU sysfs identified for user to customize
*screen off frequency set to 1.2 GHz (can be changed by user)
*custom voltage set for bin 2 device. (Read instructions within file to adjust for others bins accordingly)
*custom mpdecision tuning and other relevant instruction regarding mpdecision binary
*general CPU tweaks for better performance, responsiveness and battery life (yes all 3 can be achieved, and are)
Again, open the file with a file explorer (or notepad+ in windows). Read it, understand it, adjust what you want, or leave it be. These settings are very much dialed in for the interactiveX governor of LK. It won't get much better. I'd say take a look at the voltage portion and mpdecision for now (found at the end).
Once more, drop file into the /system/etc directory... Replace the existing one, and reboot.
FILE DOWNLOAD
Updated today... many useful changes, and fixes (set up for stock kernel for now)

I've noticed my phone lags alot less now and some things I had going wrong (if I turned torch on more than 15 seconds it would freeze and Multiwindow didn't like to work) work now. I don't know why or how or even if it is supposed to do anything to those things and it's just a very odd coincidence. But I've noticed my battery life is horrible now. Running it with Alliance 2 and with my ZeroLemon I used to get 10-11 hours on screen time and that's down about half to 5 or 6 hours. I know you said you could tweak stuff but I have no idea about that. Any recommendations for me to change in the script? Thanks again if for anything my phone running smoothly again!

If you aren't using lean kernel, you need to change the governor in the script to NOT say "InteractiveX"... Stock, or all other kernels need "interactive"... Otherwise the governor will be stuck on performance.
That is likely your issue.
Most people don't know that the note 3 boots with the performance governor enabled. The /system/etc/init.qcom.post_boot.sh file executes after the boot complete flag and changes the governors, among other things.
Edit the file, change the governor call out to "interactive".
Should fix it.
Thank you sir!
Running amazing after changing things over to "interactive" in the script with the stock kernel. Much more fluid speed on Eclipse with the battery life a bit better. Thanks for sharing! :highfive:
Wow night and day difference by changing that script to just interactive. Been flying all day playing games and watching movies total SOT (with my ZeroLemon) is just over 5 and a half hours screen brightness at about 65% using Lux and Bluetooth and I'm only at 67% awesome job man and thank you for steering me in the right direction!
Is the 300 slot removed from this script?
Also to my understanding this is mainly for the dev edition and lean kernel correct. But most of us r on the retail. Is there anything else to change besides the interactive for better performance?

I can tell you for sure...this scripts works fine for plain jane stock kernel (because that is all you can use on retail Verizon N3) as long as you change the "interactiveX" to just plain "interactive"
Obviously you need root to swap out the script.

Big difference in battery life when i changed interacticeX to interactive. Thanks for this OP.
Just want to provide my stats after using the script on eclipse rom 2.2./interactive. Screen on time was 6.5 hours with the phone. Before the script I would average about 4 hours. I want to thank the OP, this was a great tweak. Thumbs up.
Just giving you all a heads up.... I think there may have been a few errors in the stock init.qcom.post_boot file (they are human too, remember).
I am testing a few small changes to certain lines in the "factory" script to make sure. A brief explanation of it is that there are certain lines I removed from the one you all are using right now, and I did so because the file paths being called out did not exist!
However, I was going over this again tonight, getting ready for the official LP release and decided to review this odd discrepancy one more time. After doing some digging, I found that the file that some of those values were intended to be written to, were actually somewhere else!
Doh! - Sammy/QC. It is very possible that this location changed from a previous design or fs structure and somebody simply forgot to modify the script. Very interesting indeed.
Anyways, after I run this for a couple of days and do a little bit more investigating, I'll post the updated script for all of you.
Updated link and file. Please update if you were using this before, as there are many changes that were critical to stability and performance (errors made in this stock script)
Other devs, I recommend working this into your ROMs, given that fact.

Question. So if this new file is set up for stock kernel for now, is it set to interactive or do we still need to change from interactiveX on retail?
Edit: was being lazy. Went ahead and went through script. Didn't see interactiveX anywhere.

I'm not so sure the latest script is good or not....on my stock kernel Verizon N3 (NC4 firmware and kernel with NK1 radio) using the new script seems to have killed my battery life. I went from 33% to 20% in about 20 to 30 minutes.
I reset by restoring original script...rebooting...restoring your original script (interactiveX changed to interactive)...rebooting
I had to charge the phone so can't give a real check until I get back to 33% or so.

Same here on battery drain. Not as smooth either running biggins rom "possible reason". I might try this on a stock Rom to see if that makes a difference. Hard to beat untouched biggins right now though.

V2 posted and pushed to Kernel Aduitor. Check download tab in KA for change log.
Yesterday I noticed my phone began getting really lagging switching apps, going to homescreen, keyboard etc. Put the kernel on mine and my girls phone say day I odin flashed fog6 on both phones. I updated to v2 last night and the lagging seemed to be much worse today. I've even tried turning off the select few set on boot features I had turned on. Havent updated hers to v2 yet but shes complaining of the lag and I didn't change any auditor settings on here at all, it was mostly just to root and remove some stock crap. Not claiming its gotta be your kernel as the laggy mess seems to be the same as the first 5.1 update got after continued use.

What gov have you been using? Intellidemand was working best for me. Also Id/I do turn off KSM/UKSM. It helps ram wise but cpu takes a hit. Otherwise I havent experienced any lag. Have experienced 2 reboots but its ALWAYS while in the same app.
I have another update coming soon. Updated toolchain, sh!t ton more govs., intelliplug and more. Working on the OC'n you asked about in your earlier post. Also Grarak/KernelAdiutor accepted my pull request for official support so next time he updates it in the playstore it'll be official and coming with plug in support which should be fun.
I was running the interactive governer and changed it last night to performance followed by a reboot. Today the lag just made it unusable and any remaining set on boot options I had checked I turned off. Only thing on my girls friend I changed in kernel auditor was the gpu set on boot option. Haven't had any reboots, if you let me know which app is it I'll give it a go. In the meantime I'll switch to intelli demand, I believe I was using that one before I updated and switched it!

I have experienced lag as well, I have tried all of them and I was going to say screw it and try something else. I have been using userspace and so far so good. We will see if it helps or not.
I am pretty heavily debloated and the slowness was noticable before the kernel. I have to switch carriers to get on cm12!

This new firmware was suppose to cure lag. I guess it's not as good as some make it out to be. I do think the laginess may have been kernel related in some aspects though. I was experiencing lag on the old firmware and the new. I have applied your suggestions @ShinySide, and so far so good. I noticed an improvement, only time will tell if it will be a long term improvement though.

Custom rom For LG Aristo

Hi I was wondering if someone was working on maybe a cm based rom for the LG aristo? Or someone compiling a kernel for it? It's been out since about January and a lot of people have it but no one really seems to focus on side market devices anymore.
Ive been having this device about as long and looking for a good alternative ROM or even good mods myself
I have the kernel if anyone wants to make one. https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0Bzk7IAINn5jfeDRQc3JwZ1F1aXM
Would anyone be willing to make a port from lineage or miui or anything? I can be the test mule. I've been trying to learn rom building but it's going to take me a very long time to be able to finish my first one.

EASIER WAY TO TWEAK CPU SPEEDS
For those who would like to disable hardware throttling on the LG Aristo I've come up with my own way to disable that rather than to go through to each core and tweak their control file as Need4Sneed has done. for my little trick you simply need to navigate to /system/etc. now from there scroll down until you see two thermal engine files: thermal-engine-8937.conf and thermal-engine-default.conf
simply change conf from within the file extension name to bak then restart. NO NEED TO DELETE THE FILES. Safer than sorry. after that your cpu will by default reach 1.4ghz. now that may be sweet as heck but you gotta remember; speed generates heat. also the snapdragon 425 is known to get hot. well thats a lie... its known to get scorching hot. like teabag a volcano hot. well you get the point. this is NOT for heavy gaming, trust me I've tried. and well my finger got burnt, yes it gets that hot. without thermal files your phone will not take preventative measures to dissipate heat but rather hit the max temperature and shut itself down all while grilling your fingers like chicken tenders. yum. so with that said its only natural. though this cannot in any way prevent your phone from booting it may cause hardware damage which may get so bad it eventually may prevent your phone from booting in that instance I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR BROKEN HARDWARE OR SOFTWARE.
upon messing around with the clock speeds with kernel auditor which does require root (messi2080) <-- da root mon --> seems the best clock speed is around 1.094ghz and the gpu speed must be lowered to at least 400mhz if your feeling ballsy then maybe you can fade 523mhz but never 598mhz. lets just say its like a really fast motorcycle with no cooling. simply put the motorcycle explodes. same concept and I wouldn't push a phone that hard as sadly :'( its my daily driver I suppose maybe the same does or doesn't apply to you but do have fun just be careful. :good:

Don't delete it.
Just rename it. Add .Bak to the filename. And when you want it back, remove the .bak

Only remove .bak and not add .conf?

For example, say the file's name is "thermal.conf". You can change the file name to " thermal.conf.bak" and the system will act like the thermal.conf file doesn't exist.
If you want to use the file again, just change the file name back to thermal.conf
