Root - Nexus 9 Original Android Development

NEW: CF-Auto-Root flashable: http://download.chainfire.eu/595/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-flounder-volantis-nexus9.zip
Will update this post soon-ish!
--- old post follows ---
This took a few hours more than I had hoped, because it's both the first firmware on a new Android version as well as 64-bit. While there have been 64-bit builds of the SuperSU binary for a while now, they were untested until now, and unsurprisingly there were a few (minor) issues to fix before it worked properly.
As such, this root includes SuperSU v2.18, which is a special build for the Nexus 9, which you should definitely not try to put on any other device, nor should you put an older version of SuperSU on the Nexus 9.
I have not yet updated the CF-Auto-Root framework to be able to patch the kernels live (needed on 5.0) or support 64-bit, so this is a more manual root than usual.
It pretty much comes down do:
- enable oem unlocking in Android's developer options
- fastboot oem unlock
- fastboot boot inject.img
- fastboot flash boot patched.img
The included README.TXT is a little bit more extensive, but not by much, and if you don't know what the above does then maybe you shouldn't bother (yet).
Please note that many root apps will have issues with both Android 5.0 as well as 64-bit. There may also be more issues with SuperSU on 64-bit that I have not found yet.
Guess it's time to fix up CFAR and update the new How-To SU with all the 5.0 specifics. That'll all take some time, though.

Awesome. Just got mine today and already unlocked, just waiting on word from you to root. Can't wait!

need root so bad

Boom

Rooted ?

nexus 9 rooted ty so much

A quick video guide for those of you that prefer visual aids.

Now we need busybox

Can't get it to work...
Booted both images just as instructed. Then first full boot after booting the images, it won't accept touch at the encryption screen. Hold the power button then it reboots and boots fine. Open SuperSU app and it says no root binary... I'm still fidgeting with it.

had the same issue. went back to the stock boot.img, disabled security and set to swipe, reflashed inject.img & patched.img. worked good, turned security back on but didnt choose to enforce on start up. guessing might be an issue with that..? havent tried with that re-enabled.

That was the issue! Turned off security and rebooted the two images and I had SU access. Turned pattern lock with boot enforcement and it broke SU. It is the boot time security that breaks this.

Nice work! Seems to work well so far - now as others stated I just need busybox - seems Titanium Backup is not detecting root and needs it? Or TB could be incompatible.

Can I ask what MPT is please?
Do I simple extract your zip file and run it, even if it's already rooted?

Hi,
Just wanted to say how much I appreciate your work.

A big thanks for rooting the Sony tablet S !!
Best regards,

It didn't work for me. The problem is I can't seem to install the supplied driver. Tablet S appears twice in the device manager, and I can't install the driver, it gives me a code 28 error.

Any advice how to get the driver correctly installed?
Ok, I had to remove Google USB driver, and reinstall it through SDK Manager. Also used this document to correctly install the ADB driver...

Hmmm... potential issues? I think no. When ICS update will be available, then when you flash it - you will just loose root. We could try OTA RootKeeper, but I don't know if it will work with our tabs. Gotta try with normal/present ota update - and I will let you know.

Here, I was affraid even to root it. LOL
It's where a pro becomes a noob. ...when getting a new device....
Miłego...
I studied the source code of OTA root keeper today and it looks very interesting.
On the first view it should work on our tab and I guess it could save the root rights when ICS will arrive via OTA.
Supercurio used a very good trick (old linux command) to protect the su-backup file on a ext2/3/4 file system. The create a backup of su under /system/ with the name su-backup and protect the attributes with the 'chattri' command. Due to this fact, the OTA update will be not able to change something of this file. I am looking forward for ICS update next month and hope I am right.

Tried functions (not their functionality) and worked quite well. I am still waiting for my 1+1, still under processing..
I have one question though, is it possible to allow this utility to flash own files like recovery or kernel without downloading any by referring to our own copies? If not, can that be implemented in any future version?
Newest version still opens and says outdated, and trys to prompt me to download the EXE file again, over, and over, and over. Disconnecting from the internet should fix this problem, but i mean, really, who does that anymore.
--
and when started without internet connected, straight to run time errors from trying to connect to dropbox on start, and having improper try/catch methods for startup.

SuperSU claims to be granting root access, but ES File explorer and Titanium Backup still claim I don't have root.

You cannot issue fastboot command when you're not in fastboot mode. Do you have all the correct drivers installed for adb/fastboot? Anyway to get to fastboot you can also turn on the Nexus while holding down vol + and vol - the same time as power on.

Worked great for me, just keep in mind when you finish from the "red android" screen and it says rebooting in 10 seconds, give it more like a minute to reboot, don't manually restart thinking it got hung or you might have to repeat the process again. Don't ask me how I know.
Also, Titanium Backup from the Play store won't work (says root is denied). That's not Chainfire's fault, you need the beta Lollipop Titanium apk for it to work properly (store version should be updated soon).

Help ME Please OTA Update Has my phone stuck in a boot loop

So i read a bunch of threads and people said the new update was fine and wouldnt try to remove root. So i decided to give it a go and see if that was true. Well when it rebooted it keeps rebooting into twrp no matter what i do. Im not good with linux commands but how do i fix this? Also i only have one file to be modified and thats for the dual window mod so i could dual window all apps. Is this part of the problem?
I found a thread that told me some command lines to restart the phone without needing to wipe but how do i get rid of this ota update?

While you can (sometimes) install an OTA while your phone is rooted, you should never try to install one when it is fully unlocked (i.e. - custom recovery installed). You edit seems to indicate you fixed it, but if you're still having issues I know there are steps to get out of the bootloop you're experiencing, I just don't have off hand where they're at. Bottom line, if you're root AND unlocked (running twrp), you should never take an OTA as there's no reason for it. You can install one of the fine stock-based roms that have been updated to the latest VZW software and have no risk in doing so. Just for future reference

Follow this command lines and that will or should reboot your phone to before you tried to install the newest update. The same thing happened to me with the last update. Those commands came in handy.

Pays to have a copy of LG Flashtool and the stock firmware
See the first post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2907508
If you have a USB otg cable, you can put the flash...zip file linked in the post on a flash drive, then tell twrp to install that to clear the ota.
Alternately, twrp has a small terminal emulator. Look at the part of the post with the commands listed. Only input the su and two dd command lines, in twrp.
After either of the above, tell twrp to reboot to system.
Once you can successfully get back to your normal system, either freeze "System updates...." or use a file manager to rename the two LGDMSClient files found in /system/app, then reboot your phone one more time.

Bootloop after 6.0.1 OTA update

2 weeks ago I did a 6.0.0 to 6.0.1 OTA update and my device went into I a so called bootloop.
I tried everything on http://www.skipsoft.net/?page_id=1647 - without success.
The factory reset and the options in the recovery menu of the Nexus 9 did not help.
I cannot load a new image because I did not Enable the developer options nor the USB debugging via the menu when the device was OK.
I installed the SKIPSOFT UNIFIED ANDROID TOOLKIT and connected to my Nexus 9 (WiFi).
I connected successfully to the device and tried the UNLOCK BOOTLOADER part of the app.
It didn't work - it gives "ERROR - you have to enable debugging mode in order to unlock".
So, the question is: Can you unlock the bootloader with the SKIPSOFT UNIFIED ANDROID TOOLKIT if one did not Enable the enable developer options nor the usb debugging via the android menu?
If not, can you suggest to me what may be my options as I am stuck. Warranty of the device has just passed.
Thank you in advance,
S.
If you can get into recovery, you might be able to sideload the OTA again: - http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-9/help/failed-marshmallow-update-stock-android-t3226704

I just enabled oem unlock. i am writing this from my nexus 9, and i have you friend to thank for
I had same problem, couldn't get the recovery method to work properly.
Was able to return to HTC for repair, just received it back today.... got even worse. Started to set up again.
Here is list of problems:
first it froze on the homescreen on initial start up
froze while updating the google apps
now doing the reboot thing
frozen on the lock screen
can hear a soft 'tap' sound while in locked mode
Needless to say will be returning to retail for full refund.
Something tells me either Android or manufactures haven't fully tested Marshmallow properly with hardware, as having bad problems with my LG G4 also on M6 and gone for repair.
...
So I have the same problem. While updating to 6.0.1 there was an error message and after that it got into a bootloop. Can I sideload when I don't see character identifier for my device as described in point 4 in the link? All I see is "OS - n/a"

At your own risk. You could try with the latest OTA zip linked above.
It shouldn't do anymore damage, probably just fail if your system was on an earlier version than what this updates from.
If it fails, try an earlier OTA.

Very strange that your recovery screen does not have them options. (dev. options shouldn't matter).
Try rebooting in recovery and check them again.
You can also do a factory reset from the hboot menu, which might resolve your problems.

Very strange that your recovery screen does not have them options. (dev. options shouldn't matter).

Ah, this helped me. I have to press volume up only once. :silly:
I'll report my progress.

It worked. Thank you so much for your help. Only thing i f***** up, was the recovery mode. I held the volume up button for too long and always ended up in fastboot mode.
