Users other than primary are limited - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, ran into an odd issue... on my tablet I have myself setup and then added my Wife as another user. The issue is that my Wife's account seems to be "limited" as she is unable to change some settings (such as "Unknown Sources"). How can I either enable her account to change those settings or have that app show up for her as it does on my account?

Nobody else? Pretty simple to try. You just need an apk file (i.e. download an official google one from apkmirror.com) and a second user setup on your tab. The first user can go into Settings -> Security and turn on the "Unknown Sources" option. The second user when going to that setting sees it as greyed out and cant do anything with it (and hence cant install the APK)

It doesn't surprise me at all that there would be limitations for secondary users. It seems prudent for security issues

When I say "Secondary" I simply mean a user I setup after my initial account. It seems ridiculous that adding another user means that user does not have full access to the tablet (thats what restricted profiles are for). If the solution is to buy another tablet Google is just as bad as Apple

Is there any way to make my apps available for a second user? For example, I would like to set it up so my daughter can use Netflix without worrying about her going in to other things. She's only four.

Yes. When you add a user choose "Restricted Profile". I'm not sure on the specifics of setting it up but thats what you are looking for

[Q] gmail app nightmare

Well been doing some playing today - learning how to root then trying a couple of roms all with success.
However i noticed that when i wanted to use gtalk / gmail etc it keeps saying my password / username does not match ?
The weird thing is i log into my account as per normal on my PC and username / password is fine.
I checked my mobile settings in my account and the correct device is listed.
Also same issue trying to access the market place - does not match, so now i cannot install any apps through the market
Even done a factory reset but no go.
Any ideas guys ?
thx
Try reflashing your current rom.

will do - thx
Well a re - flash did not work.
Also did another system reset - did not work ,.
But all is well ! What i did in the end was change my password online with my PC and turned off that 2 step verification method. Signed in with my Phone and -
Its all working again.
Dont know why it stopped in the first place though.
Haha!
sorry I have to laugh. If your using 2 step verification then your standard gmail password will not work on any third party applications including your android phone. You have to go to setting on your google account (on a pc) and tell it to authorise a new application, remove any you have already for your phone, and add a new one.
It generates a one-off use 15 character password. You need to do this each time you flash a new rom if your using 2-step.

I don't have this problem, and have never had it, but you've sparked my curiosity since I've never heard of that. I assume it's an optional method of authenticating your google account, but that's obviously a guess.
I've had a look at my google account settings and can't see anything that appears relevant. Where are the settings for this?

VCast uploading media without permission?

My wives phone nightly is attempting (and succeeding) to backup her entire music library, pictures and videos to their server. We've disabled the sync and we're not subscribed to Vcast. It wouldn't be a huge problem except that her line isn't unlimited data and she's barely under her data allowance each month. I'm unlimited and I still don't use near the data her phone claims she does. I'm on XDA so you know I'm VERY data intensive. Comes with the territory right? Has anyone else ran into this problems? If so do you have any solutions?

Is the phone rooted?
If so, just delete the VCast files from /system/app
Alternately (and probably safer if possible) you can try to see if you can "disable" any VZW services that you're not using by going to Settings > Apps > All Apps. Find the Vcast service app (and also probably HTC Media Upload Service), select them, and hopefully the "Disable" button is available for those apps.
Disable button is a benefit of having a 4.0 and above ROM. Unfortunately I've not rooted these phones so it's not even an option. Good suggestion though.

Ahh, boo. You're right.
OK, so go into the accounts section in settings and make sure the HTC account is disabled and none of the services are set to sync. I can't remember the GB interface off the top of my head so I can't be more specific right now, sorry..
But without root, you'll likely have to figure out how to shut the service down via its interface in the settings menu.
The basic info/solution tech support offered was to watch when it attempts to start and disable data. She could find no logical reason for it to act like it is .

That hardly seems like a solution. So basically they say you have to babysit your phone and disable data when it tries to do something you haven't told it to do?
If it were me, I'd bite the bullet and wipe it. Hopefully she used the Google services for contacts and stuff instead of VZWs so most everything should automatically come back. I'd rather spend a day restoring my phone than have to bother with monitoring it all the time because its acting up for unknown reasons..
Might as well take this as your opportunity to unlock the bootloader and root it too, since the unlock process forces you to wipe the phone anyways..
Plus once you unlock it, you can use Amon Ra to do nandroid backups and then your phone is forever protected from stupid things like this, as long as you backup every now and then.
Go to settings > accounts & settings . Look for any Verizon or vcast account, you click it, unchecked box for "backup music"
Just unlock it and put ICS on!
Problem solved.
Did she go on to her My Verizon page on the Verizon website? I noticed this new Vcast cloud feature when I was changing features on my phone's service last night. (I removed wifi Hotspot since the Hotspot app on the Rezound doesn't work properly and they ain't gonna fix it anytime soon.) Under the features section their are several cloud options. The default 500 megabytes options is Free and was already active on my features even though I don't remember activating it. However, there was an option to remove this feature. Might be worth a try.

Can`t switch default web browser from stock browser

So, I`m having an issue with my stock thunderbolt on latest update, I've been wanting to use a more feature rich browser such as dolphin, but no matter what I do, such as clear default for stock browser or choose make dolphin default browser in dolphin settings the stock browser always returns to the default browser. Just to be clear what I am trying to do is if I click on a link to read more in rssdaemon I want it to open the article in the browser of my choice. Any help would be appreciated.

Go to manage apps & open the current default browser then tap clear default.
To set a new default tap on something that will need a browser (URL links),
when you get the pop up check "set as default" then tap on the browser app that you want to set as default.
This should work, always has for me, but I don't run stock roms.
If you're saying you've done this and it doesn't work, then I apologize and don't really have another suggestion.

Thanks I've tried this but I don't get the popup. Its weird because normally with any other app that can be set as default when I clear the default the button stays grayed out until I set it by the way you explained, but even after I clear the default if I go back to previous (all applications screen) then back into the app the clear default button can be pressed again like it already set itself as the default again.

NEVERMIND
You can thank Apple for suing HTC and HTC for not paying Apple to continue to use the features they had before.
The "App Associations" was removed due to the recent legal shenanigans.
So, either go back to the previous official build, or root and throw a custom rom on there.
Those are your choices for now it seems.
Possible workaround if you plan to keep the updated stock rom.

Oh wow that's some BS. I really hate all this patent nonsense that is going on why don't we just see who can implement the features the best and then let us the consumers decide.

Yeah, the whole thing just stinks!
Here is something else you may try, but I do not know for sure if it will work or apply to the latest Thunderbolt stock rom or not.
in build.prop you will have this line
ro.da1.enable=true
change to
ro.da1.enable=false
then add just below that this line
ro.da1.method=false
This method restores the feature on some roms/devices
Download an app called Home Smack. It's a home switcher but also does browsers and a few others. Works well!

I don't have root so therefore I don't believe this is an option for me, thanks though.
I must say I am very disappointed with HTC's move in the current update, I didn't see any mention of this change, frankly it ticks me off this has been a native feature of android for quite sometime and for HTC to block it makes me loose respect for them and I do believe this will probably be my last device from them, I understand it is in response to Apple, but Android manufactures need to take a stand against all this nonsense from Apple, I know it goes both ways, but this hurting the customer in the end, but then again what company really truely cares, only thing that matters is the bottom line.
Edit: update: Just found out that HTC added option under Settings > Applications > App associations, which allows you to switch what app launched when you click on a url link or whatever else, so cheers!
All android devices had to remove this aspect of the browser. If you think you'll pick up a Samsung and it's going to work that way it won't. They sued Google. Not HTC. All the phone manufacturers were included because they run android.

Getting another GS3

I managed to score a deal with Orange UK after I'd called to cancel my old contract with them (I'm with Three) and they offered me a FREE Galaxy S3 with 600 minutes, unlimited texts and 1.5GB of data for £23.56 (no idea where the 6p comes into it).
This is perfect for my GF, so I took them up on the offer and I'm giving her the phone and contract.
Now, she's been using my old HTC Desire through GiffGaff, of which we barely get a 2G signal around our house and where we live. Anyway, she's made three purchases on her Google account. Swiftkey, Battery Widget reborn and HD Widgets.
She used the Samsung keyboard on my phone a little to test it out (I use Swiftkey myself) and she quite liked that. The battery widget isn't any use for her on the GS3 since you can show the battery percentage next to the icon, but she'd like to keep HD Widgets.
We're giving the HTC Desire to my stepson as his first proper phone as well (he's 13) and the battery widget would be better on his phone and perhaps he could use the Swiftkey instead of my GF.
How do we go about keeping the purchases or moving them to another account? Is this possible?
Or, would it be possible to simply sign my GF into her Google account on her new phone as well as on the HTC Desire (so her account is present on both phones) and therefore both phones can use the apps?
The only tricky thing about that is the Google wallet and my stepson. I don't think he'd make purchases without asking but you just can't be sure!
Help!
You can have the same Google account on two different phones. Yes you can keep your purchases as long as you're logged into the same Google account. Moving app purchases between different accounts isn't possible as far as I know. As for keeping your son from making unnecessary app purchases, there's a setting in Google play that allows you to set a pin for downloading/purchasing apps
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Perfect. Yep just found that setting. "Require pin for user purchases".
That'll do nicely!
EDIT:
It might sound cheap, but can both phones use the same apps? Is there an install limit or something or is it a per account basis?

Nope never heard of an install limit. As long as your account is synced, you can use the same apps. BUT some paid apps are phone specific(purchased for the first phone and you might have to purchase a new license for the second phone). Best thing you can do is give it a test run- log both phones into your gfs Google account and see if you can restore paid apps in both phones. No harm in trying
Edit: I have to point out that your gfs contact data/gmail would be synced into the sons phone if you share the account. Even if you remove them from the sync settings, a 13yr old can always go into the settings and turn it back on

Sure you can use an app like titanium backup to freeze/uninstall it but the app is free on the market and can always be redownloaded. Even if you freeze the app, on the market there's an option to enable it(Just checked that myself)

I'm also checking online. According to Google, you can change your email address and transfer all your stuff over. I also never considered it but there'll be all my GF's contacts on there...
I think it may be a better idea to set up up his own gmail after all this! The widgets and stuff only cost a little anyway.
Yeah just setup his account and link it to your credit card so he can purchase apps with your permission.

Yeah, I guess that earlier. I think I'll just make him his own Google Account and put the pin lock on purchases and perhaps buy him the battery widget reborn thing (though Thomas H the dev was happy to move a donated purchase before, he might do it again?)

the best option would be to sign in, install all the apps you want, and then remove the account from the device. it'll mean no future updates but for a battery widget/swiftkey, i don't really think you'd need them anyway. if a major update does come in, you could just sign in again, install update, and then remove account a second time.

[Q] Work email on Nexus 9 requires encryption

My work emails require my device to be encrypted. I thought it would be okay since android 5 comes "pre-encrypted". However when I go to add my work email, it ask me to encrypt the device as any other android device (running kitkat and below) would do. So after clicking encrypt it goes to the green android screen and then boots up as if nothing has happened. If I try to update my emails, it goes through the whole process again. Anyone else facing this problem????
May be wrong on this.
Have you got either PIN or Password set up at start? - Without that then encryption settings are irrelevant. (or were in earlier Android versions)
Yeah I have a pin password setup, I'm extremely annoyed as I got the tablet for work purposes as well as personal use, instead of carrying a laptop around.

I understand your frustration. As this is a brand new device with brand new software its very possible its a bug. The other possibility is that Exchange may need an update (less likely).
I'm not sure what your work environment is like but if you were to talk to your network admin and show him the tablet and how its already encrypted they can potentially put a policy in place to not require encryption
Have you given Nine a shot? It does app-level security, so the only time you need to use a pin is when you open the app, not for the device. I normally use xposed to get around the exchange security, but started using Nine on my N9 and Moto X in anticipation of losing xposed. I'm very pleased with it.
Wow nine works like a dream and it has a nice interface!

Excellent suggestion! I too have used Nine in the past and it is a very good program!
plus it has threaded emails. which is the main thing gmail is missing with my exchange address.
Solved the problem. All I had too do was set a pin lock on boot up as well as on the lockscreen!

Hi all. I loved Nine and used it for my work email. I like that it allows app-level encryption since device level really really really slows things down.
However, after the most recent update, Nine is making it such that I have to encrypt the device. The reasoning is that calendar and contacts are handled by native apps and not by Nine. I tried to have Nine only sync emails and not calendar or contacts but it still requires the same thing.
Has anyone found a workaround for this? Or alternatively has anyone managed to come up with a exchange security bypass for gmail?
I'm on a Nexus 6.
If you've got a nexus 6 you should already be encrypted, am I right?
