Why I (WILL BE RETURNING) the Gear S after all... - Samsung Gear S

Let me preface my comments by saying I have REALLY been looking forward to this watch and am very disappointed that I have now decided I do not want it. Here are my reasons:
1) It's HUGE. I'm a big guy, 6'5", 250 and this watch is HUGE.
2) The geek factor is 11. It's like wearing a calculator strapped to your wrist.
3) This would look HORRIBLE with a suit as a businessman.
4) The only benefit of the phone capability would be for when I don't have my smartphone with me - but I ALWAYS have my smartphone with me for many reasons. Why try to tap out a text or email on a tiny screen when I can just pull out my cell phone and do it better?
5) It's too big to use as a fitness watch.
6) The interface seemed laggy to me with a slitter jitter when swiping screens.
7) It looks cheap compared to the Moto 360.
After seeing this I really believe the future of smart watches will remain as a companion device to a phone and not a complete standalone solution. Notifications, Google Now, Navigation, Spoken Texts. That's what it is good for.
Just my opinion, YMMV.
** UPDATE: Went back to Sprint and totally changed my mind. Yes all of the above is still true but I just couldn't resist the sheer gadgety joy of it. So I'm onboard! << THIS WAS A BIG MISTAKE - SHOULD HAVE TRUSTED MY INITIAL INSTINCTS.
** UPDATE: Well, I gave it a try but this watch just isn't ready. The culprits are navigation and S-Voice. Navigation won't do turn by turn driving (only walking) and S-Voice is pretty damned close to useless. Compared to Google Now it is very laggy and can answer only the most basic of questions without redirecting you to the phone. It really is hard to believe Samsung has had S-Voice for years now and this is the best they can do.
All of the benefits of having a "stand-alone" device which can make calls and GPS are negated by the fact navigation and S-Voice require me to always have my phone with me anyway.
Will give it a few more days but right now, not happy.
** THE LAST STRAW:
WARNING TO POTENTIAL GEAR S BUYERS!!!
This is NOT a standalone device and that's not because you need to pair it with a Samsung phone to add apps. There is one and only one reason the Gear S as a standalone device is a complete and utter fail:
THE BATTERY LIFE IS HORRIBLE: As a test using this standalone and leaving my phone at home, I went to the gym this morning with a 50% charge. I used Navigation to get to the gym (about a 5 minute ride). Although it only offers "walking" directions, this basically worked for driving. However, there are no voice prompts and the vibration when a turn is coming up is very weak. At the gym I used it to play stored music to my bluetooth headphones.
That's all I did. No phone calls, no texting, nothing.
THE WATCH WAS DEAD HALFWAY THROUGH MY WORKOUT! So just using GPS and playing music, I burned through 50% battery charge in less than an hour! I can't imagine how long it would have lasted were I on the phone! Being generous, that is maybe 2 hours use on a full charge using the Gear S as a phone replacement. FAIL.
So you are paying a $150 premium over the Moto 360 for a "standalone" watch which cannot stand alone. Battery is terrible, navigation sucks, S-Voice is a joke. No, just no. This watch is going back today.
Felicia out.
P.S., One more thing. Email notifications are buggy as hell. I got 10 new emails this morning and only 1 showed up in my Gear S notifications.

Everything you stated except for one just dealt with how it looks.
But thanks for your opinion.

1) It's HUGE. I'm a big guy, 6'5", 250 and this watch is HUGE. - Fair opinion, but I'm only 5' 10"
2) The geek factor is 11. It's like wearing a calculator strapped to your wrist. - Thats why I love it!
3) This would look HORRIBLE with a suit as a businessman. - Another fair opinion, but I disagree
4) The only benefit of the phone capability would be for when I don't have my smartphone with me - but I ALWAYS have my smartphone with me for many reasons. Why try to tap out a text or email on a tiny screen when I can just pull out my cell phone and do it better? - I bought it off-contract since I always have my phone. Sometimes sending a short text can be easier than taking out your phone thats in your pocket, backpack, or in the other room.
5) It's too big to use as a fitness watch. - Completely disagree, I am at the gym often and today it was in no way, in the way.
6) The interface seemed laggy to me with a slitter jitter when swiping screens. - I noticed this too when starting up, and on the display model, but the consumer model seems to be more fluid
7) It looks cheap compared to the Moto 360. - I actually thought the Moto 360 looked awful, I saw it in-store today and it looked incredibly plain

Just my $0.02

1) I'm male, 5' 7" and I thought it would look strange on my skinny wrist. But hey it turned out nicely. Pics don't do it justice.
2) It's way classier than a calculator, and the geek factor is also why I love it.
3) disagree. It looked nice on the Samsung lady I spoke with, and the presenters on stage were wearing suits and it did not seem out of place.
4) Agree with @ksantangelo23
5) Agree with @ksantangelo23. Way better display of all info than a limited fitness tracker
6) No problems on mine
7) Moto360, Pebble, and all the Wears and that other platform's wearable (I'm too disgusted at it to even say its name) may or may not look nice, but this is a REAL PHONE + COMPUTING PLATFORM. This, IMHO, is the prime justification of the Gear S.

Posts like this tend to draw some ire from those who love the watch. I am not trying to say there is anything wrong with your opinion. These things are purely subjective. I only posted this because I wanted so badly to love the watch and didn't.
That being said, I also hated the Surface Pro 3 when I first saw it in the store and I now own one and love it. Sometimes when I have anticipated something so long reality always disappoints a bit. I'll go back and give it another look. Perhaps it will grow on me.

o one is forcing you to buy it if you don't like it to each it's own. There are plenty of smartwatches. I'm sure you opinion matters to someone hell you probably discouraged someone to not buy it :good: job.

Lol, if you want to survive long in forums, you are going to have to learn that not everyone agrees with you without throwing a fit.
Back to the facts. The watch IS huge. It IS nerdy. It will look a bit GOOFY with a suit. Now if none of those things bother you, this may be the watch for you. I'm willing to give it a second look today to see if i like it any better. I'm most concerned about the S-Voice functionality.

:good::highfive: Welcome aboard

I have to disagree. Its WAY WAY smaller than I thought. Barely bigger than the gear I use everyday. Its gorgeous in my eyes. The moto 360 (the best looking android wear)...and the rest of the android wears...not so much.
I wasn't able to actually play with the gear S (the demo unit wasn't charged) but I want it.
ATT does it for $299 no contract required.

I am 6'2" 350lb. The size of the watch is no bigger than the larger faced watches I used to wear. Since I normally wear cargo shorts, I don't feel the vibration from a message, which is why I want a smart watch. The original gear looked small on my wrist
I am looking forward to other bands. I like the wide strap look of the bangle but it is shorter length. For it to fit how I like, I need about two more holes (or lose weight )

Serious Questions on TFP / BB return?

I can already feel the angry masses and people saying "you started another thread......when there already are threads......."
I am supposed to get my TFP tomorrow from BB. Along the Wifi / GPS / aluminum back issues there is one fundamental one I don't understand......Didnt the engineers test this stuff out first or think to bring up the plausibility of signal distortion before advertising this stuff. Isn't there a Quality control department that could have said hey Bluetooth and wifi radios are distorted look at this?
I do not have mine yet so I hope mine is fine, but to people on both sides who want to bash my post, even Asus is now admitting an issue and that is a big deal as it then puts doubts in potential customers minds. It was funny when it was the iPhone 4 and the antennae issue but not so funny now. At least Apple attempted to do something. I hope Asus can come up with something to save its customer base. We have to have competition for the iPad.
How did all of this slip by? I mean sheesh we are paying 500.00 plus for something we are told works out of the box.
My other questions are more pessimistic. I'm not sure even if mine works fine that it is reliable for me to keep. Am I safe in opening the box and playing with it to build up courage before returning to BB?? Or should I just return with the box sealed?? Right now the only thing I wanted was the TFP. If its not ready then I'd rather have my money back. I did as much research as I could on the iPad 2 or this and made my choice I don't want to spend my money on something I feel is second best, in fact it would be more money.
Please note I had the TF 1 for 6 months, several kernels and Roms on it and was very pleased. I havnt seen a backlash like this in a long time.
Complain about my logic or paranoia, that's fine, but this is not an Apple vs. Android War.
If it is defective, then bestbuy will let you exchange it for another one of the same model.
I'm not sure what policy BB has in the US...but here in Canada, I can return most items to Best Buy for a full refund within 30 days. I have 14 days for computers and tablets. You do not need to have any reason other than it's not the one you want.
As long as you return them in the original packaging with nothing missing...you're good to use it as you wish for that period of time.
I took advantage of this policy when buying a new tv a few years ago. It was a great way to test out different models and sizes to see what I really wanted.
I just purchased the Samsung Galaxy Tab a couple days ago...I'm giving it a good test before committing to keep it. If I can get my hands on a Transformer Prime in the next little while from BB, I will give that a whirl as well.
I returned mine last week.
Best Buy has a 14 days return policy even if the box is opened as long as it is not damaged by you.
If the device is defective then you get your postage/delivery cost refunded too.
So play with it for a week to see if everything is working, if not... return it.
I returned it due to dead pixels. GPS, WFI all worked on mine and no black light bleed.
I had 2 units with dead pixels, so make sure you check for that with apps...

If I thought the gps is important feature (which I do), I wouldn't even bother going to get it or even open it up...just say you changed your mind. The chance of it working right is slim. If I knew what I know 2 weeks ago I would not have got it at gamestop. They don't seem to have a refund policy, but some people have said they got it returned and their money back. Either wait for asus to own up and fix the problem or choose another tablet. I also own the transformer, but my son broke it. I waited to get the prime to replace it, but I rather go back to the old one, but seeing how asus is....I'm not even going to get the transformer even though it was good.
My tolerance level has dropped considerably since all this stuff started. I'll probably be looking for trouble. However I've had enough tablets that if I have one of the "defective units" then it won't be hard to find. Feels like a bad dream.
Hey, another Canuck. I wish I bought mine from BB because my Canada Computers 14 days return is up on Friday. There's nothing wrong with opening and playing around with the tablet. That won't prevent you from returning it. If anything, playing with it will give you a sense of the limitations and let you figure out if the GPS really matters or not. Also, Ice Cream Sandwich comes January 12th, how could you pass on that?
P.S. In a couple weeks, you'll be hearing back from people like me that will be sending to RMA to "fix" the GPS. We need to see what they do about it.
They took my used one back no questions asked.
you haven't even gotten it yet let alone used it. you think n hope for the worst, that's what you will get. instead of assuming it'll be riddled with defects, at least test it out and have some hands on before passing judgement. guy got flamed in the other thread for this same thing really. he didn't even have device and was dismissing it on stuff he read n heard. Be your own person and test it out first with an open mind. don't just assume since you been reading all these b.s. threads that they're all true.
that was being nice Good luck on your Prime and performs out the box for you like its supposed to. Let us know your first impressions vs. all the stuff you been reading ln this forum.

I agree. My wife and I really like this tablet. She gets pissed at me for even talking about GPS ("We already have that in the car why the hell do you need it on a tablet!"). Otherwise the only issue for me is the HDMI output. The amount of B.S. in this forum is unreal - it make me think peeps are doing it to deter Prime sales. It's been that bad.

I agree, I use devices in their proper perspective. If I want to use a GPS (I will use a GPS), a mp3 player (I will use a mp3 player). I don't use my PS3 as a bluray player, I use it to play games. I use a bluray player to watch blurays. This is a tablet use it for what it is...and thats to replace a laptop or netbook!

yes. it has been that bad. I'm starting to think the same thing. all in all, its completely fair to want a fully functioning device since we paid for it. Aside from GPS, which I don't use anyways, My Prime has more than exceeded my expectations and all other aspects of it works flawlessly. including wifi

I've seen a few printer share apps on marketplace. can't recall the name but they are out there. just type in Printer share or something similar in marketplace and see what pops up. I'm not sure if the Print n Share app that was well received for Ipad is out for Android.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm new to android market and sometimes I see apps and have to question their credibility. I don't know why. Maybe they look too much like shareware or something.
I use printer Share and really like it. You have to download a client for your desktop but it does it all including Remote Print.
You guys are right and I tried to note that I don't have the Prime yet, but this is almost anarchy lol. That's why I wanted to know if I was safe opening the package if I retun. This isn't me wanting something else, it was the TF or bust for now. So I'll post when I get it and will keep an open mind. Thanks
I got my TFP today on theorch bubble wrapped and white box. I don't know what to say after warming up and charging and installing updates, which went flawlessly.
1. Haptic feedback is barely noticeable but I kind of like it that way.
2. Screen is beautifully brought as is the device.
3. Camera is pretty crisp with nice Facebook integration.
4. Nice and lightweight.
5. Riptide game is Wow, Amazing. Graphics.
6. Screen transitions happen with no lag. Impressive.
7. Speakers are way better than the TF 101.
8. No dead pixels and just a hint of light bleed.
Not so great.
1. GPS my phone the Motorola atrix in my livingropm locks to 15 satellites within a minute. This can't find a single one.
2. The wifi signal about 25 feet away drops between 2 and 3 bars. However speed test are the same as the OG iPad.
3. Despite being ultra thin, when holding the TFP the edges hurt your sides of your hands. Kind of surprising.
4. The back is very smudge prone. Not that's a return issue.
While it is beauty and the screen is impressively bright and games speaker and camera are all pluses. Wifi, GPS are frustrating. Need some time to comtemplate.

if thats the case wouldnt you use a laptop or netbook????? you have way to much money/gadgets ( feel free to donate some )
my first one was riddled with problems. i am much more confident that my second will be better now that they are in stock at some places. to me that means asus is starting to catch up on demand a little and hopefully will have better quality control. if not no. 3 here i come!
Well to me the issue with the GPS is not really that it doesn't work but more that its included in the price. So if they had just left it out to began with the prime may have been cheaper. So we pretty much paid for a GPS chip and parts for nothing.

Adrian, so there was no high demand for the Transformer Prime, could you explain that

I'm sure the XDA community would love to hear your opinion of there being no demand for Android tablets. So explain.

At least Android is relevant, if you encounter a RIM fanboy who wants to mouth off about Android, just bring up the Playbook.
Adroid tablets are dead, they sell like utter **** and there's nothing that might change it in the future. They're doing so bad that simply put it's impossible to do any worse.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, maybe "Adrian" should put down the crack pipe. RIM fanboys bloviate just like RIM does, the average size of the RIM fanboy's mouth is about as large as the disproportionate gap between the specs in the Playbook and its massive launch price.

Thanks given. I was just about to lol
Here's some facts:
- As of October, there were just 3.4MM HC tablets that accessed the Google market. To me, non-market tablets like the KF and NookC don't count as "Android tablets." That's what Apple sells in a day.
- In the U.S., high-end ($399+) Android tablets make up 15% of total non-Apple tablet sales and 1/3 of those have 3/4G and are sold through carriers.
- Pre-KF, Samsung had 16% of the U.S. market, Asus 10%, and Acer 9%.
- Manufacturers quote sales in "shipped units." Half the shipped units can be sitting on shelves or stacked up in reseller warehouses.
- Analysts are projecting that Android tablets (including the KF) will double in 2012 (6.4MM) which is still a fraction of what Apple's doing.
- People don't equate non-Apple tablets to the iPad and don't see their value at $399+. Only price has made a difference in volume sold (HP TP, BB PlayBook, KF, NookC).
Performance isn't what has kept the average customer from buying Android - no one's complained they're too slow. The issues are: complexity (compared to iOS), lack of applications, and poor marketing. Unifying all Android devices on ICS will make a big difference in the app area. When apps are more polished, available in larger quantities, and more consistent the average consumer will warm to Android. Same with the UI. But it'll take a year for the majority of devices to be on ICS. Part of Apple's success and profitibility in the tablet market comes not just from the sale of iPads but what they make selling apps, music, videos, etc. That's the content strategy that Amazon's following with the KF. Analysts feel that stand-alone tablet makers are going to be pressured and some will leave the market because, without content to subsidize profits, there's not enough money in making tablets alone. So there you have it...
P.S. - None of this applies to XDA'ers because we are no where near the average consumer in the way we view electronics.

I hate to say this, but I love my Blackberry 9930. It has a touch screen and a static keyboard which I hope will never go away. I type twice as fast with on my Blackberry then any other virtual style keyboard. The Blackberry is really good at messaging, enterprise stuff and text/smsing. It is NOT designed for games and stuff like that, which a lot of people want so they just say they don't like it. I REALLY do like the static physical keyboard then the virtual ones. Sorry.

There's a lot of Android phones with physical keyboards as well, limited high end devices, but the Droid 4 comes out tomorrow.

Excuse me while I be childish, petulant and spiteful.

Ahh, where to begin? I know! Does everyone remember all the many posts re: GPS, where one after another popped in to tell us how little GPS meant to them? I do. Including several heated arguments about the value of GPS on a tablet. Everyone must remember the classic "I don't need GPS on a tablet, I have my PHONE for that! " All the way to blasting people for being upset with Asus for a fairly major screw-up. That was the argument: Who needs GPS on a tablet? Like we who made a huge fuss were being "fussy"
Here's where us "Fussy GPS lovers " get a huge laugh, as all of a sudden, the majority of posts are "Bring it, Asus! " and "Can't WAIT TO TRY THIS! "
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
I even remember Demandarin saying a few times "GPS is a dead issue, get over it." (which always got me steamed)
But now... everyone wants their dongle. Granted, there are still plenty who could give a rats ass about any of this. I am just having my moment of childish glee, and if you think thats immature, then all I have to say is:
Neah neah ne neah neah!!!
Oh, almost forgot - Where the hell is my GPS Kit? Wait, let me guess... They ran out (since all Asus needs to do is make enough to cover shipped units, and we all know Asus can't count) and now they are on backorder.

GPS is a not-issue for me. I'll continue to use my phone because my car is setup with a phone holder and everything.
I will tell you I'll take ANYTHING (within reason of course) for FREE! That is why I say Give Me, Give Me, Give Me. If Asus sold the GPS kit I would not buy it.
I'm just curious how a GPS dongle is supposed to fix all the other problems with the Prime? I think this is more of a gimmick than anything else. I believe Asus is trying to pull a fast one on us. Don't be fooled!!!

Let me add an analogy : It's as if we all bought brand new top of the line BMW's and come to find out they all have an oil leak, transmission leak, and a broken cigarette lighter. So when we took it to the shop to have it fixed, BMW gave us all a brand new add on cigarette lighter "for free!!!" to "fix" the broken one. And now you are all happy, even made a thread about it.
I love my prime, it's arguably the best tablet on the market. GPS is not the focal point of this product its so much more than a navigation tool. But Asus really should fix the wifi and reboots.
I didn't mean this post as disrespect to the OP.
WOW!!! So you are saying that I can now have TWO....TWO....dongles to play with while watching porn on my Prime.....
Awesome! Now my right hand wont be jealous of my left any more....

your analogy is flawed, the GPS dongle makes the prime not a prime, as it adds extra bulk to it.... your BMW gets everything FIXED, while keeping the initial structure, the prime doesnt. it needs a add-on dongle.

Wait why do you need GPS while watching....TV?
To be an accurate analogy BMW would take a large spoiler and add it too the front of the car, fill it with butane, make it detachable, make people stop driving to attach and remove it, and make it cover the headlights so you can't use both the lighter and headlights at the same time.

LOL!!!! So funny that you used BMW as an example. They are horrible.....horrible...when it comes to a recall.
I have owned 9 BMW's (5 of them ///M cars....4 M3's and an Mcoupe) and have club raced with the national BMW CCA, so I am very familiar with their Customer Service....lol.
My 2001 M3 took 3 years for BMW to recall and fix the main bearings......thats a big deal.
My 1995 M3 had the rear shocks push thru the sheet metal in the trunk due to a weak design. Never acknowledged by bmw.
My 2000 M coupe has a reputation for the spot welds in the trunk to start tearing.....never acknowledged.....also a BIG deal.
My 2002 bmw 325 has a problem with the subframe mounts tearing in the rear, and front shock towers showing stress cracks.....never recalled....lol
I could go on.....
That is why the Mcoupe is getting a rest this race season, and the Lotus Exige S is getting the crap run out of it....
BMW makes Asus look like mother Teresa.
I know, I know, it was just an example, but I just found it kinda funny.
Sorry......go on with the bora-phyll

Even though I'm on the "GPS is unnecessary side", this post was hilarious.
Meh gps. There are more pressing software issues with the prime that need to be fixed asap.
The dongle is great and even though i dont use GPS i'd get the dongle if its free. Its just nice to have the option.
Anyways i'm good. Prime was the best purchase i made in a long time and me and my wife are having great fun with it Basically planned our whole weeding on it Its just so much more convenient sitting on a couch and handle stuff instead of being bound to a laptop/pc on a table with mouse and everthing.

You know - you're aren't forced to read threads... and you'd think with a title like one this thread has - you probably should have heard loud warning bells...
Yet you read it anyway.
*Just to complain*.. just like the guy who posted the original post in it.
In other words, you're actually making his post jump to the top - making more people read it - and actually doing what you're complaining about.
Have you considered getting councilling for this clearly self-destructive psychological problem?
EDIT: I suspect most people here don't think XDA is ruined at all or in any way by one thread or even one subject. Drama Llama much?
I'm closing this thread not because I agree or disagree with you, but because the last thing this section needs is another flame fest / spam thread. Your opinion has been stated. In the future, try posting it in one of the other dozen or so GPS threads in this section.
That is all.

[Q] Gear s vs Gear 2

Can someone post a vid or pics that show the differences in the devices? I'm looking for thickness comparisons and width.

Why does everyone assume no one knows how to use google?
I've searched I've seen very short side by side comparisons .but nothing that shows how much each watch stands off the wrist.
Would it be better to post this in a Gear or Gear 2 area on the board as this is a Gear S section? I know many are upgrading but again this is a Gear S section.

So many unhelpful people in a "community forum".
This question is in regards to going towards the gear s. So yeah more people are likely to have a gear s in the gear s forum them the gear 2 forum don't you think?
I'm sure there are a few like me who have moved through with each device that has come out so I'm sure someone here has all 3 galaxy gear, gear 2, and gear s.
Yeah I could wait till this weekend when bestbuy has them or go to the store but why not ask a community forum of gadget freaks like xda.
Thanks for your helpful comments.
ah that my fault. I though it said gear vs gear 2. I now see that its gear s vs gear 2. Over all those they are just about the same. One has 3g and curved screen. One has a camera. OS and apps are the same on both. Main question is do you want 3g or not. Even if your not looking at the 3g part, do you want larger curved screen or not. Not really to much of a diff from them. Being that you have already had the other watches, what is making you want to upgrade to this one? If 3g and curved nice screen is the reason then I see no reason why not to upgrade.

Ohh ha ha, yeah I like the bigger screen just not how high the gear 2 sits off my wrist. I saw that the screen size is about as big as the face of the gear 2 with the metal casing which is cool. Just curious about the stance really.

We don't know about you or your wrist so who are we to judge how it rest on your wrist. If all else fails take Gear 2 back buy gear S if you don't like run back to get Gear 2. or hell buy them both test out.

You obviously didn't read. So let me explain yet again. Yes I could just take a fuller and measure out what I'm looking for but that's not going to help out much.
All I want to see is the thickness of the watch versus the gear 2.
Now why all this wasted effort on complaining when you could just move on clearly shows you all have nothing better to do then spend time on a forum flamming people.
Go to redit or 4chan for that and leave this community of mostly helpful people be.
Thanks.

A side by side comparison that shows the thickness not just the top would be nice.
Thanks in advance.

Based on this question you are asking to compare so you can make an informed decision on the watch you want. why else would you post in a forum asking for a picture or video of the differences. So yes the things that you gather from this fourm videos pictures ect will help YOU in make YOUR DECISION to keep the Gear 2 (30 day return policy) or Buy the Gear S when BB has it available.

With that said I hope the pictures/videos/articles will help you decide to get whatever you like. in the End Samsung did all the PR work
#FACTS

I wonder after the newness wears off if I will still like the Gear S in a few months.

I have 10 more days to decide if the Gear S is a keeper or not. I like it a lot but I'm just wondering if I will still like the watch after the newness wears off say in a few months. Also wondering how much I'll use it. The few issues I have with the watch are the battery dock is annoying to charge. imo It has a sweet spot but I can never find it. lol Also wish the watch had social apps like G+ and Hangouts. It's been years since I used a watch so I'm still getting use to that. It seems that the size of my wrist is in between notches. It's either a little to lose or to tight.

I feel u, but in IMO with future software updates to iron out the bugs, developers adding more of the more popular apps, the Gear S will only get better. I personally feel this is the future of the smart watch. With more ram, larger storage, same size or slimmer with longer battery life and replacement band with camera, it can be a true phone replacement.

You can always get a Moto 360. I am not sure I understand your question. Is there another smartwatch on the market that has the same features as the Gear S or in the foreseeable future?

If I return my Gear S I doubt I'll get another watch.
those same concerns are what has kept me from pulling the trigger so far on this guy..
not wearing a watch for years makes it difficult for you to decide; for myself, I have worn large watches for many years, so at least that part of the decision isnt there for me. Like you said, just not sure that 3 months from now, I will still want to wear it every day...
I have the same thoughts. I think it will improve with either more OTAS and/or root. I do wonder if a better model in under a year will eclipse this one?
Always something better coming out but I kind of think the Gear S is ahead of it's time.
I like the Gear S design and believe it to be a well-done device. However... I disagree with others about the future of app support on the device. Samsung has tried the proprietary OS in the past with Bada and that never received a critical level of support. Furthermore the market is smaller than Android Wear and most developers report poor app sales at the moment. So while major stuff may eventually be ported, it currently is unlikely to be platform of choice for independents unless Samsung makes a new app challenge. (Many of the apps in the store now are from the original "Samsung Gear App Challenge" that brought the store from 300 to over 1,000 around that contest's deadline).
So... yeah... unless Samsung invests into further, likely not a future-proof device sadly but great to use for this moment.
there is no such thing as a future proof device...
and frankly, outside of more app support, which, the jury is still out on how much more you may want to do from a smart watch. that can be added to a device like this, imo..some might want a camera, but thats not important to me..
since i've seen how you can use this watch as a phone/text/music device without even having a samsung phone, once more folks realize that, it should increase its popularity. Especially considering that Android wear, at this point cant make calls, send emails, web surf, or really do much of anything besides implement a visual version of Google Now., and receive notifications.

Note that AW can receive AND reply to notifications. Something the Gear S cannot do in many cases.
I've been trialing a Gear S for several days and I posted my thoughts on AC.

It's unique is one reason why I am keeping it... I am going to post my Gear 2 on Craigs List and just stay with the Gear S...but the root and the Gear 2 made it better when I added the custom rom made for it...for Tizen made it a bit better so I will hold out hoping that comes to the Gear S

If you ordered online you wouldn't have to pay a restocking fee. I was lucky the manager said he would credit my account 25 for overnight shipping.

If root appears would you want to try a AW ROM

Hangouts (though an app to fix this called Notifications for Gear S is out), and all other 3rd party apps (IG, FB, GroupMe, etc.). Plus you can only dismiss emails, not delete them.
yeah, I know about hangouts, so I just use stock sms, which works perfectly..the other apps you mentioned arent important at all for me when I would be using the watch independently..
As far as not deleting emails on the phone, I dont want them to; the watch is only a "temp" way for me to deal with stuff; I prefer to decide once I get home/to the office on what to do with them..
here again, everyone uses technology differently; its great to have choices:good:

This is interesting. This was my first Gear so I'm not up to date with how much development previous Gears got. What are the chances of getting root and ROMs on it?
I am on day 4 with the Gear S and on the fence on whether to return it. I did get it at the store so I would have to eat the restocking fee of $50. I would rather lose $50 than have a $350 device that is put in a drawer. I have not worn a watch in years and I have found that the strap is very uncomfortable. The plastic band makes me sweat. I find the charging dock very difficult to attach to the watch. The other thing is the lack of apps for the device and I wonder how many will actually come out.

Good question; the Gear series has sold really well, but not sure what bringing root/roms would do to improve this device. Although, all things Samsung seem to be the favorite "brand" for all sorts of development.

Understandable, as this watch is a tough one to make your "first" watch to wear, in many years..

Number 1 thing would be compatability with non Samsung apps so we could use Hangouts and Gmail as well as a multitude of 3rd party apps that the Gear S does not communicate with as well as AW does.
Number 2 would be 2 way communication between watch and phone. If something is deleted on the watch it would also be deleted on the phone and vice versa.
Number 3 would be full compatability with non Samsung phones.
Number 4 would be customization of battery saving features and other settings
Those are just off the top of my head. I'm pretty sure other people smarter than me could come up with even more.

It would be great though if we had the option to just dismiss it or delete it. That's one of the things that irks me. Come on Samsung, gimme a choice at least.
