He is right you can. Sprint & Verizon do not have sim cards in the GS so not sure if they make you sign for a plan or not but T-Mobile & AT&T have sim card so if you buy outright you should be able to just use Bluetooth w/out plan a card is included in the box DO NOT have them activate it if you go the sim routes

[Q] Unlocked phone but no service, will wi fi work?

If I purchase an unlocked phone (lets say Motorola Atrix) from Amazon and don't purchase a SIM from any provider, will the phone work over wi-fi?
In other words, if I am traveling overseas, and use the free wi-fi at a hotel etc., can I get emails and make phone calls over wi-fi and skype or do I need a SIM for the phone to work?
Thanks
yes. wifi works regardless of the SIM card. That is how I used my atrix (with an old SIM that didn't have service) until I got it unlocked
You can use GrooveIP to make phone calls over wifi via Google Voice (no sim). I can confirm it works on the Atrix.

[Q] Smart Relay

Anyone actually able to get Smart Relay to work?
It's supposed to open the app on the phone automatically when a notification comes on the watch and then you turn on the phone.
While the actions to open the app on the phone works fine when clicked on the Gear, I have been unable to get the Automatic Smart Relay to work.
I have ATT Gear S and Verizon Note 3.
to get smart relay activated properly you must first turn on the mobile data connection on your phone then the mobile data connection on your watch. if the gear s has auto mobile data defaulted, in 60 seconds you will not have to activate it manually.
This method is to get the calls forwarded. Again, to establish the remote connection both phone and watch mobile data connections must be established. If youre connected to wifi the remote connection will not work.
Once call forwarding or remote connection has been established it is not necessary to keep the mobile data connections on either the phone or watch. The remote setup has been worked out through your cellular provider and there isn't a need to keep data on if you don't need them.
This must be done every time to get it working. I'm using both a tmobile bought gear S and note 4. It all works brilliantly.

I don't even have that option in Gear Manager like I had it with my Gear Fit and Galaxy Gear ...

I think OP was asking about something else. Not call forwarding. This is about how the notification causes the app the notification came from to open up on the phone automatically.

[Q] Data Sim on my Gear S

Hi, i am planning to buy this watch but here are my concerns:
I'm planning to put my data sim on the Gear S and my company is having 2 APNs, one for WORK and one for INTERNET, so one of my question is, Can i set two APNs on gear S and interchange with it quickly?
My other question is, when my gear S has a 3g sim on it(only data sim) and my phone does not have internet, when i pair my phone WITHOUT INTERNET, will it have an internet thru my gear S data sim?
thanks.

Unfortunatley, you can't tether your phone to your Gear S for data: in this scenario, you will have data on your Gear S, but not on your phone, unless someone figured out a work-around for this.
This scenario makes the most usage sense to me, BTW: have all the connectivity on your wrist, and use a tablet or phone if you need a larger screen. I'd ditch my phone and just keep a tablet. The battery of the current Gear S would not last very long used this way, though.
In regards to 2 APN's, you can easily set them up. Mine has two settings: one for data and one for MMS. You have to select to have data always on, or be disconnected from your phone, in order to get into the greyed out Gear S settings for APNs. I am however not sure if the watch saves the two settings, so you can switch back and forth easily. Hope someone else can answer this. My guess is yes, because I can "add" a new APN, not just "edit" the current one under data.

Via the watch itself.
Not sure about swapping apns, it is enuff of a headache swapping sim cards from the phone to the watch.

Subscription associated SIM

Some European providers offer another ( a 2nd) SIM card associated to the primary subscription for use only with internet. It means a second SIM to use for data transfer.
will that be helpful for the Gear S or just add another SIM with another number to use with voice?
when not connected through BT to the phone, but is connected wireless, what type of connection does the watch use? data or voice?

It's better to have the voice and data because it will have a number anyway so why not but if you don't care to forward your calls to the watch or don't plan to use the watch standalone number then by all means data only if the data plan is right for you ie unlimited or more than 200MB per month

Using the Phab 2 Pro with Google's Project Fi

In case you are switching from a Nexus phone on Project Fi like I was, I thought I'd post that you do not need to switch carriers! While the Phab 2 Pro is not a supported phone, almost ANY Android phone will work with Project Fi's data-only SIM. You can order the data-only SIM for FREE.
1. Login to your Fi account at fi.google.com
2. Click on "MANAGE PLAN".
3. Click on "ADD DATA ONLY SIM".
4. Install the "Hangouts Dialer" app (separate from the Hangouts app) to allow VoLTE ("Voice over LTE" - also works over wifi before your new SIM even arrives).
It's that easy and you can keep the voice SIM in your old Nexus phone and use them both! Phone calls will ring on both phones. There is NO EXTRA CHARGE for using both phones - your bill is based on the combined data from both phones. Or just keep the old phone (and SIM) as a backup in case your P2P gets lost or stolen.
I just received my data SIM from Google and it's a Nano - and the Phab 2's SIM loader seems to be micro. Did you receive a micro SIM or did you use an adapter? Thanks.
[Disregard - I just slapped the SIM in the holder and gave it a try - worked a charm!]
