Traveling Advice

Hey Everyone,
I'm going to France/UK for a month in about 3 weeks
But I would still like to get in contact with my family here in the states. I was wondering if anyone knew the best way to get service while outside of the country.
Would it be cheaper to get a sim card there and plop it into my phone or call ATT and tell them I'm traveling and that I need service there.
Lastly, if I go the sim card route, do I need to do anything to be able to use the card or do I drop it in and it works?
Thanks again!
Firstly, congratulations and I hope you have an amazing time. Last summer I went to Greece, Italy, and France so what I did was turn off my data (just the toggle in settings) and used the wifi over there for apps that let you call or text others who have the same app. At&t also has a messaging plan where you get 100 texts for like ten dollars or so I think but you can't double up -_- for some reason. Don't buy any At&t overseas data plans, they will charge you an arm and a leg.
But any ways, if you know you are going to populated parts of the country where you'll get wifi, then you should be good with that to talk to friends/family here for a really good portion of the day. (many cafes and such offer free wifi but hotels, you'll have to pay but it's super minimal- equivalent to about three dollars on average for your stay there)
Again, wishing you the best of luck.
3 possible options outside of using ATT
first call att and see if they unlock your phone for you - if not use cellularunlock (~$25) to get the unlock code, once overseas, buy a local sim and use that
if wifi is available use that - first sign up for google voice then install grooveIP and log in with your google voice account - you can not make wifi based phone calls (caveat - not sure if groove ip enabled yet in Uk or france)
use Skype - sign up for thier very cheap monthly subscriptions, and use that when in wifi range

Thanks for the replies guys!
I think from the look of things I'll get my phone unlocked and just get a sim card there.
I'm going to hope that there is a ton of free wi fi so I can call the family back home but I also need service to keep in contact in towns while I'm there.
Also, will unlocking the phone affect anything? Because I'm currently rooted and running TheUnofficial.
Nope. Unlocking a phone lets you use carriers overseas. Has nothing to do with os.
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke
-iOS = inspiring Outdated Software
Hey there,
Nowadays lots of things there, you can contact your family very easy and free services. There's lots of application on the phone, you can contact through Skype, WhatsApp, IMO and there is lots of apps are available. You can easily video call with these apps. You only need a good internet connection which you can easily find in the UK. Happy journey
Thanks!

[Q]Official Unlock from AT&T plus remote software

Hey Guys,
I have no choice but to swap my rooted AT&T Gnote with my Dad's International Gnote in the next few days. My dad's phone is unlocked so I can use it fine when it gets here in the US.
But ... my phone is not
I read somewhere that AT&T is mandated to give unlocked codes if 1) Phone is not exclusive 2) if it is more than 6 months old.
In a few days, my phone will be more than 6 months old (Sunday to be exact - early Note adopter here). Also we know Note is on Tmobile so its not exclusive anymore.
So my question is --> Do you think AT&T will hand out codes if the phone is 6 months old?
EDIT: If AT&T will not give out codes, what is the cheapest or hopefully free method to unlock the phone?
**************
The other thing I needed to ask is about remote controlling a phone FROM a PC. It is like Splashtop/Logmein but the other way around.
Sometimes it is very hard for me to describe to my dad on what keys to press etc etc .. so I decided to find a tool/software just for me to have full remote access to the phone from his PC (tethered via USB) when I am remoted to that PC in Asia. (Inception baby!)
Or it would be better if I could just directly remote in to his phone from my PC here in the US - instead of remoting in to his PC and do it from there.
Any thoughts about this guys?
Thanks in advance!
I know this isn't helpful, but if your dad can't figure out what button to press then just get him one of those jitterbug phones

lol .. if you find a jitterbug that is about 5.3 inches that can play movie clips ..im all ears
My dad can use the phone fine, play movies, etc .. he is not that tech idiot. .. but sometimes, i need him to go deep in the settings, like check the battery stats, go to some other deep settings in mobile network and many more. That is where he gets lost.
I just hope I can find a program so I can control it for him also he was a nokia fan-man .. all his phone life it was all nokia .. so I want to control it and teach him .. after that I'm sure he will be fine.
I believe At&T will unlock your phone if it is not currently under contract.
Here is an example of a remote control app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.MarcelloAlbano.LazyDroidServer
Holy Crap .. I got my hands on my this international Note ... wow .. just wow .. the speed difference is soooooo far apart. The international note is just soo much faster. Exynos FTW.
Anyway, back to the unlock questions .. I'm willing to pay money to have this unlocked. I think Cellunlocker.net is the way to go.
However, once if I unlocked it, would it be permanent? What if I changed ROMS .. will the unlock persist?
Thanks!
Unlocking from a particular carrier is permanent. Flash any and all roms.

Blacklisted IMEI (Maybe)

So I bought a L9 T-Mobile last Saturday to use it with simple mobile but always get no service, I go several places that repair phones and all say was a bad sim so I bought a new one and same thing happend. I go to another place and say that my IMEI can be blacklisted and when he check says is blocked and reason is STL. I check here at home and says unlock... Im asking is there anything I can do to use this phone? I read that changing roms cmay also change the imei but I'm on 10g so means I can't root it yet.

Changing the IMEI on U.S. soil will land you in Federal Prison for a long, long, long time.
On a good note, I don't believe that T-Mobile has implemented IMEI blocking yet. Are you sure the device is for T-Mobile? Does it say T-Mobile on the top right corner of the glass? If so, try your sim in another device. If it works you may have a bad device.
What is the Firmware version and Baseband version?
You can try doing a factory reset.
Here are instructions on doing this: http://www.resettoo.com/hard-reset-lg-optimus-l9-p769-to-restore-factory-settings. Good luck.
Yes have the T-Mobile logo. I bought it from the girl next door on my vacation on Florida. She say she bought a Galaxy 3 so didnt need this phone anymore and give it to me for $150 and since I have a mytouch 3g slide I obviously accept but use mini sim and wait till I got back and bought a mini sim just to find that dont work.

I don't have my L9 handy. Maybe someone with 10g can confirm the same baseband. If it is different, that may be the issue.
Would you be able to have someone with a T-Mobile sim try it in your phone?
Not yet, thinking on going to T-Mobile and check, if works then transfer my number to them. Would suck change $40 to $50...
Symptoms of an IMEI Blocked Device
CANNOT:
Dial 611 to reach T-Mobile customer care
Make/Receive Calls
Text Messaging
Data/Internet
Use any tools or menus such as calendars, contacts, etc.
This is taken direct from T-Mobile.
I can verify for you whether or not its blocked if you like.
I PM you the IMEI, hope is not blacklisted... Is a good phone and I dont wanna use like an MP3/Video.
Also I check and I can open the tools like contacts, calendar, etc.
Wow! I was not aware that T-Mobile is already blocking IMEI. Thank You for the info.
Worst case scenario is you may be able to use one of those sim unlock services on Ebay to unlock it for AT&T.
The phone supports the 1900Mhz 3G band for that network.
There are plenty of pre-paid carriers that use the AT&T network. Net10 is one of them, and they have unlimited everything for a good price. Good luck.
Oh I didnt knew I can have 3G outside T-Mobile network. I might have to try that. Will keep update on what happend.

Yup we got the same data... also as Jrkoffjonson PM me is marked as blocked.
(My prior comment was not meant to upset the OP. Just some personal opinion. Removing them now.).
To summarize: proceed with caution as you already guessed what might have happened with your new phone.

T-Mobile was selling this for $199 with free $50 refill twice in the last 2 months.
I don't think "the girl next door" is giving you a good deal at all. Probably something "HOT" she was trying to unload quick. No ebay fee/trace left behind for the authority now that it is your problem.
Good luck ... proceed with caution.

Love when people do this kind of advices...
My final guess is she sell it to me, she report it stolen, bought a S3 with the money and im with a L9 that I use as a tablet...

These days mobile service providers have joined together and sharing centralized IMEI data for any possible criminal activities happening over the phone. Just dont buy any phone from anyone you dont know well. Even if you have bought it from relative may put you in legal issues. Always ask for bill (invoice), warranty card and box, even if warranty is over.
Just imagine that "girl next door" also does not know that the phone is used for illegal activities (drugs/terrorism) and may be thats the reason the phone IMEI might have been blocked and is still traced by International Investigation Agencies, then what? You might have saved some dollars at the cost of your fortune. So beware. Dont do this again. These days we are all wired and easily traceable.

@Jrkoffjonson, Which site you checked for blocked IMEI?
I was looking into straight talk but dont know if is also a t-mobile network. I unlock the phone for $8 so Im happy.

Why is my Gear S no longer able to register on TMobile's network?

My wife bought me the international version of the Samsung Gear S (SM-R750W). She said that she researched and from her understanding it should work on the T mobile network. From what I've found though the consensus seemed to be it would not work, or if it did it would be spotty at best depending on the specific towers/area you were in because Tmobile utilizes different network types in different areas.
I decide to give it a shot anyway and went to the T-Mobile store where I signed up for the wearable plan and got a new nano sim card. I was crossing my fingers but as soon as they put the sim card in the watch it came to life. It looked to be working fine but as I left the store I received a text from T-Mobile stating " the SIM for your wearable devices is in an ineligible device. Services to the SIM are locked until it returned to your eligible wearable device".
I pessimistically started thinking well great, there goes that idea. But as I got into my vehicle I shut my phone down and tried to see if the watch can work on its own as a phone when unencumbered from my Note 4 bluetooth/WiFi data connections. It worked perfectly-I started calling my friends and they couldn't believe I was talking on a watch phone. Several I actually felt the call sound quality was better on the watch speaker phone compared to normally speaking on the Note 4. I called customer service but they told me they couldn't see anything and if it was working fine not to worry about it.
For the next eight or 9 hours it worked perfectly and I was using it a lot. I drove around large swaths of town and neither data nor call experienced even the slightest issue - for once I was happy to be wrong.
Eventually, as I am oft to do, I fell asleep. When I awoke this morning the watch was no longer connected to the network. It gave me a message saying it was unable to connect and did I want to scan for additional networks. I selected yes and it was able to find the T-Mobile and ATT networks. T-Mobile was selected and a "registering" notification was displayed. It took awhile but eventually said it was unable to register with the network.
I call T-Mobile and they said pretty much exactly what I expected them to say -that because it was not a T mobile device they could not ensure proper operation. But he said (and he characterized this as "good news", "light at the end of a tunnel" and "viable solution” Seriously said all 3 things.) I could either forget all about the cellular connection and just use this as a companion device OR go and buy a new Gear S from T Mobile if I really wanted that feature.
I’m truly and utterly baffled that he believed his suggestions merited the positive sayings from above. Never in my lifetime has my head been closer to exploding.
After I was finally able to speak again, I explained that it seemed unlikely to be an issue with the watch. If my Gear S was working perfectly yesterday and can still detect Tmobile & ATT networks, then something on your end seems to be preventing registration. He agree to file a ticket with the engineering team and tomorrow I should hear from them hopefully. He also told me to go and try another nano-SIM, gratis, at the Tmobile store. So today I went and as soon as I put the new card in all systems were go. I assumed that I somehow had received a bad card because here again now, data and voice are connected.
This time I didn’t even make it out of the parking lot before it notified me that that it was again unable to register with the network. There is conflicting information regarding the radio frequencies and bands that the different Gear S models have and I didn’t have high hopes. But then it actually did work, WELL, so any ideas as to what is going wrong?
Imei not recognized as a wearable device by tmo
I am also getting very discouraged with the gear s on tmo.
But I think I finally got a tech person who may have found the problem ,
He said my gear s is no longer registering because the tmo system did not recognize the Imei as a wearable, that's why when I swapped sim with a friends iPhone sim, the gear worked. Because the wearable plan will only work with that device. The rep is asking engineering to add my Imei as wearable, but it has happen yet, he did not know if they could....

I guess that makes total sense, and answers my question if I could just get an Android watch phone at some point and use the same nano SIM that they gave me for my Gear S.
Could you post here if/when they added your IMEI? They were super unresponsive to my request to unlock my original Gear S (which I replaced with an ATT Gear S that ATT kindly unlocked for me), so I have little faith that Tmo are even willing to help their customers, but since I have my plan with them, I'd love to be wrong this time.
Tmo problem
Well I wish I had better news, but it is still not working, I called them back, they say they requested the engineering to add my IMEI , but who's knows if they did, they seem to have very little experience with gear s, it's very frustrating because it did work the first 2 months until I tried the sim in my iPhone. I think I have reached the end of the line ,
I might try closing acct and opening new again...
So can either buy new tmo gear s. And sell my unlocked att gear, or put mine on att,
But. I really liked the Tmo plan, and would probably had switched my other (family) lines to Tmo.
anyone have more ideas?

Maybe try to cancel your wearbales plan, then get one again, with a new SIM and new number?
I would not buy a tmo gear S: they won't unlock it and it costs $50 more. I use an unlocked ATT Gear S on T-mo without issues, but if putting the SIM in another device caused this for you, and the SIM itself is not the problem, they must have some kind of hold/notice on your wearables plan in your account, I think?

[Q] Samsung Galaxy SGH-T399 Help

Greetings All,
My fiances mother has this phone, I don't know if its because she has had a fight with Tmobile (she has been with them for a few years but renewed contract like a year ago).
None the less she refuses to pay them, and they wont unlock (sim code) her phone. I have rooted her phone, and was wondering, is there anything ANYTHING i can flash so she can use a different carrier at all. Her main problem with Tmobile is they claimed she would have all this service, even when she reupped they made her a deal and said it was going to be good again, its horrible where she is at. Like real bad, cant really even talk, 4g is not even possible.
Anyways, if there is anything she can do, please let me know. She refuses to pay them, and would like to keep using this phone if possible, if we can't I have an old at&t phone (samsung something smartphone) but we are hoping.
Much thanks
Looks like thats a no. She says she is just going to continue paying hte bill I guess. It is horrible though, I remember when she talked to them they promised all these things would work, even the map says it should work, I have t-mobile as well and mine doesnt work so I know its not her phone.
Word of advice, providers should have to honor what their maps say.
