Soft Brick - Please help! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
I hope someone can help as I'm at the point where I feel like cutting my face off with a spoon!
This is the standard GT-i9100
My mate bought a Galaxy S2 from someone who flashed CM on the phone, it was working but then apparently it started freezing up and after a reboot it did not go past the initial boot screen that displays the triangle with the exclamation mark.
Obviously I can't boot into the phone to see what version of CM it was but I can get into CWM which I can see is running version 6.0.1.9
From what I can tell it was CM 10 ICS.
I tried some of things I found on the forum but it didn't help
-wipe data/factory reset option in CWM
-wipe cache
-wipe dalvik cache
Note: when you get into CWM it straight away brings up E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/command
it also has logs in the same directory it cant mount or open
I figured to try get back up and running I should just try flash a newer version of CWM so that I can load cm11 kitkat on the device.
So I tried to use Odin3 v1.85 and CWM-KitKatCompatible-i9100.tar
But when I tried to flash it, it just hands at NAND Write Start!!
I uninstalled Kies (but not the drivers) turned off AV and firewall but still cant get it right.
I also tried odin 1.83 and v1.3
I'm not sure what to try next or if I'm even going in the right direction, should I be trying to load a different CWM at this point or do I have to do something else first since the phone seems like its soft bricked?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Try mounting USB Storage from CWM Recovery and see if your sdcard appears on your PC.
If yes, you can flash a CWM compatible with kitkat, wipe data, and flash a cm11 rom

I tried that and it still didn't work, something on CWM is actually corrupt.
I actually think the partitions are corrupt but there also maybe an issue with my Samsung drivers on windows 8.1 I should have done it on my win7 PC as I have now hard bricked the phone when trying to repartition with a pit file.
Apparently my local Samsung service centre can fix it and out the original ROM on but they are going to charge the equivalent of $25 which I guess is acceptable since the phone was basically free.

Have you tried to flash the Stock ROM with Odin? That's always the best thing to do when everything else fails

[Q] Galaxy S 2 Boot Error

Hi Everyone! just a rookie here in need of a bit of advice.
I'm a Galaxy S II I9100 owner and have my phone rooted and all setup with custom roms and been comfortable with flashing for some time now. My ROM of choice recently was Vanilla Rootbox and have to say the ROM has been fantastic with very few bugs to report. Last night i recieved the OTA update via Goo Manager for Vanilla Rootbox 3.4. I downloaded the full update over wifi and flashed with all wipes no worries. Next step was to flash the latest GAPPS and i figured there would be nothing wrong with flashing the GAPPS zip i had on my sd card that i had downloaded the last time i was notified of a GAPPS update via Goo manager as well. After flashing, wiping everything and rebooting again. My phone then booted up to a series of dialog boxes indicating that many google processes had stopped functioning. apps.google.com etc etc. A similar error has been reported in the Vanilla Rootbox thread by another user but i wasnt able to report this bug their either because my post count is too low to post in a development forum. So after seeing this error i rebooted into recovery to flash my last backup but CWM recovery came back with an error messaging stating it couldnt mount either ext or int sdcard. i did a factory reset which made no difference to the problem whatsoever. I then downloaded ODIN and the latest stock ICS Rom and flashed it via ODIN with no reported errors. My phone now boots through the optus boot animation and is stuck at the Galaxy S 2 screen with the flashing red and yellow animation over the S. If i turn off the phone with the power button, the phone turns off and immediately starts again and gets stuck at the flashing s screen. I've taken the battery sim and ext sd card out and put it all back in only for the problem to persist.
If anyone could help me there's a donation and my thanks in it!
Much appreciated
Nick
tried to re flash another stock ROM?
If so, tried factory reset the phone after the flash?
As long as you can get to DL mode, you are good to keep on flashing till you are up & running.
And then you got this
Remember to update your kies and make sure you close it all up before flashing with odin. If you are in 4.0.4 beware of the brick bug.

Kies has never been installed on this computer but i did use the usb drivers mentioned in the soft brick recovery guide you linked. I used some information from the guide to flash this stock rom but i couldnt flash or wipe the partition because im unsure where to get the .PIT file required? i cant get past the boot animation so no factory reset possible and yes i can still get into download mode!

wow wow, leave pit files alone for now, they are nasty.
What stock ROM did you flash? 4.0.4 or 4.0.3?
You can factory reset via recovery mode.
Try installing kies anyway, it can't never hurt. Just make sure all applications are closed before you re-flash.
here's jb leak, might help:

Right so i flashed I9100XWLP8 stock rom (4.0.3). Just then i flashed Siyah Kernel and attempted to use the factory reset function in recovery there, i get a message down the bottom mentioning that it can't mount my internal SD.

I had this problem once to. On my HTC Flyer, nothing I could do to recognize the phone. I had to ditch the HTC Driver and tried every copy of the android drive I could find on XDA. I will see if I can find the file that worked for me. But in the interim you may want to try a few.
BTW I am not an expert. This worked for me and it sounds like the same situation to me. :fingers-crossed:
Here's a question: where'd you get the recovery? http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager, i don't see your device as supported. Also, i believe they're called universal naked drivers, that may be of help.

and in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2129298, the cwm versions are removed.."CWM 6.0.2.7 is not save to use, you may damage your phone. "
so hopefully you tried these: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1843825
I am not a developer or anything & havent read many forums...but while playing with myTouch I did get stuck a few times.
Somethings I cant point out if u wanna try as a layman:
1. can u mount your sd card through recovery?
2. if you can than just pick another rom for your device and put it onto your sd card
3. wipe data & partition, wipe cache, delete davlik. some devices work ONLY with wipe script (for my friend only the wipe script worked)
4. dont use odin. go to cwm recovery & install zip from sd card & choose the rom (the 1 from step 2).
I think that should get u out safely....hope it helps
@bodh
i actually installed a cwm 5 version
maybe thats the cause of the whole problem
@indiankarmas
i did install multiple roms from the sd card, first cm9 then stock rom
but it doesnt really work
how i fixed the problem:
when i flashed cm9 and used the bootloader with odin to pass the recovery mode my phone booted the stock os
installing from the external sd didnt work, i just wiped my phone for nothing
it booted the stock os, i didnt want this but this made my pc recognize my phone
so i transferred the rom and gapps in the internal sd
got back to recovery mode and installed from internal sd
and used the bootloader again to pass the recovery mode
again, i appreciate you guys trying to help me out

[Help] Bricked my 10.1v - Recovery won't install

Hi there,
I hope there ist somebody here who could help me.
I was about to install the lates CyanogenMod on my Tablet and kind of screwed up.
My tablet was rooted, but had some problems installing a Recovery-Image. So I installed the stock Rom (3.0.1) and tried to flash CyanogenMod again. Installting everything via Odin works fine, but when I try to boot into recovery it won't work. So I tried to install the recovery image from the CyanogenMod-Wiki via fastboot. At this point the Tablet schows following error:
Code:
Failed to process command getvar: partition-type : recovery error (0x2)
I had the problem before, when my tablet was rooted, that I could not install the recovery via the Rom Manager...
So I thougt that I might have screwed up my partitions at some point. I went on a hunt for the Pit file and then to install stock Rim with the Pit file again. Well I did find a Pit file which is supposed to work for my tablet. But now everything is screwed up. It will not start anymore at all. Either it ist stuck on the Samsung boot screen or it shows an Android with the exclamation mark and doesn't do anything anymore...
This ist the Pit file which ist supposed to work:
Code:
android_fastboot_emmc_full_p4_16G_32G.zip
Has anyone got a working Pit file für the P7100?
Does the Pit file even fix my partition problem?
Is there a way to manually partition the tab and if yes has anyone got a guide?
I hope there ist someone here that can help me. I would really appreciate it! I know I screwed up badly on this one :crying:
Thanks to everyone taking time to help me in advance.
You might try doing stock image to open if you can get to the recovery and just do a full wipe. ....or try opening your stock recovery if you can and just do a factory reset wipe everything

Thanks for your quick response.
On rare occasion I do get into the recovery and did a full wipe of erverything. I even tried to format all the partitions. On some partitions it just said, that it can not format them. I also reinstalled the stock rom a couple of times as well.
Nothing of this worked so far. I am always stuck on the boot screen or the android with the exclamation mark (after I factory reset ist or reinstalled the stock rom)
Edit: When I boot (not flash) the recovery via fastboot I can get into the downloaded recovery from CyanogenMod.
I tried a little more yesterday to revive my tab...
When I flash the stock rom in download mode via odin, it starts afterwards to a screen with the android and the exclamation mark. At this screen I can press the power and volume + button a couple times and then I am in the stock recovery. Tried every option in there, but it just wont helpt. Afterwards it ist stuck on tying to boot into recovery.
When I don't press the power and volume + button and just wait after flashing stock rom, the tab will reboot after a while and gets into a boot loop with the samsung boot screen...
Tried flashing a recovery rom from clockwork as well, but afterwards I am not able to boot into it. My guess is, that the partitions are screwed up and therefore the tab can not boot... Is there a way to manually partition my tab? Can anyone post the partition table for the P7100 (Galaxy Tab 10.1v)?
Oh yeah... Everything started after I flashed the last nightly from CyanogenMod. That was the first time the tab got stuck on the boot screen and ever since can not get past it.
I scared that I completely broke my tab now and wont be able to get it back :crying:
If your thread name is correct you have a 10.1v if I am correct the code name for it is P3 but the Odin file you posted I assume is for the P4 because of its naming. If it is so the you have flashed the wrong stock firmware image for your tab. You have used 10.1 Wifi and 3G model firmware on a 10.1v. Your tablet could be seriously screwed up but there is still hope if you can get into download mode.

You are right. I have the P3 and flashed the P4 PIT-file. I have read on a couple sites, that the P4 ist as well the right one for the P3 and haven't found another PIT-file just for the P3.
I only started using the PIT file after my bootloop problem started, which was directly after flashing CyanogenMod (nightly). The version I downloaded was supposed to work all right on my tab, but did screw it up. Do you have any idea which part of my tab could be screwed up and what I could try?
I think it is the partitions and I flashed the stock rom for the 10.1v (3.0.1) a couple times (with and without the P4 file)...
I am getting all right into download mode, but can only get into the recovery directly after flashing the stock rom. After one mor restart I can't access the recovery anymore...

MTP USB drivers won't install using ODIN

I tried to do a search for this problem but search isn't working on XDA right now... So my problem is that I was trying to update my Hellybean ROM and when I wiped I must have wiped something I shouldn't have. The newest ROM was saved to my internal SD and after wiping it wouldn't reboot into TWRP so I tried CWM, which it did boot into but wouldn't load the old version of Hellybean on my ext sd. I tried to load a .tar file through ODIN to get the phone going again but it keeps failing when trying to load the MTP USB drives, so I am stuck! Anyone know what the problem might be?
I should add, when loading a tar file through ODIN, the phone reboots through the initial Samsung logo then goes to another and gets stuck there. I am thinking that it is not loading all of the files because of the USB drive not being installed?
You might try grabbing the modified CWM file from BlownFuze's AOKP thread and flashing it from your ext sd card. It will flash the newest roms. If all else fails you could try the emergency firmware recovery in Kies.

Through CWM it will see a couple of rom's on the ext sd but I get an error when it starts to flash. I tried Kies but when I plug in the USB it doesn't see the phone. I don't think it's bricked as I can get into download mode and cwm??
After getting some sleep I thought about what I did yesterday when flashing the rom. I had a longggg day at work and was tired and after wiping the phone I think I rebooted it before flashing the rom, I am almost positive I did that. It will be the last time I flash after a long, tiring day! Anyone ever reboot the phone after a wipe without flashing a rom first?
I don't know what tar file you were flashing thru odin but I do know when you flash back to stock it always hangs up on the first boot. Then you have to go into recovery and do a factory reset and boot up again. BlownFuze posted a handy guide on flashing the stock rom back in June. You might have a look at that and see if it's any help. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=42806745&postcount=360
I got it figured out and fixed... the version of CWM was an old one, uploaded the newest one and got everything reloaded!!
Glad to hear that. Seems like the 4.3 roms are a bit more finicky about the recovery version you're on.

Stuck in CWM ! NO ADB

This is my first time rooting my device and all that, I'm still a noob and forever will be.
anyway I followed the normal steps where you download Odin and everything went fine and my phone was still working now I had to update the CWM version to 6.0.4 or something so I downloaded the Kit-Kat compatible zip file and upgraded the version to what I wanted it to be.
Now I read in one of the steps that I need to backup my files and so I did but now I can't recover it and my phone doesn't turn on I'm stuck in CWM I can still see my files on the phone and when I restore it does name the files I already had but my phone does not work just goes black ...so either CWM or a black screen.
My PC does not recognize the phone, Kies doesn't either.
Did I nuke my phone?

i can't understand: are you able to access CWM (using the three button combination) or you can't even turn on your phone?
If you can access CWM, go in "mounts and storage" and select "mount USB storage", then connect your phone to the computer and see if it is recognized

Hi all,
I am in the same situation, but can't figure it out.... I wanted to upgrade to Kitkat so I downloaded Supernexus 4.0 but the install from zip fails everytime I attempt it.. So I'm stuck in the CWM and I don't have a backup ROM to install...
I checked the md5 sum of the ROM, it's ok.
I wipe the /data partition, the cache and the dalvik cache before installing from zip..
I installed the last CWM version (v6.0.4.5).
I don't know what to do next because the only ROM I have in my phone is the supernexus 4.0 which cannot be installed and I cannot mount my phone using "mount USB storage" in CWM, my PC doesn't see the phone mass storage..
Any idea ?
Thanks,
Hervé

Always keep a working kernel/rom .zip in you internal memory so if you are stuck you don't need to use Odin!
Try to use another USB port or another computer to see if it is recognized, or if you have a MicroSD load a rom on that and insert it in your phone.
if not, you have to use Odin and flash a kernel or rom using the pc.
