[q] Android 4.4 Kitkat, install related Q? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Friends,
can I Please ask which Kitkat, I'd reckon the Korean official port, is the a best match for my Galaxy S3 i9300? I have heard that there may be some bits being odd but I am not all about the small details, I am merely interested into bettering my phone performance and overall output.
I hold ClockWork Recvorey 4.4 and SuperSu installed. Thanks for all in advance

Nvermind, I have had it figure out. Great job to all who did not step forward

5hrs is not alot of time to wait for support.
This device is old, All the maintainers etc have long since moved on. There is only about 3-4 of us who give support now. None of us are programmers and do so in our free time and this being a weekend and all.
Besides 99% of the info is out there like you proved and only need to search for it.

Certainly didn't mean to sound frustrating, didn't imply to say anything also, just I have no know idea about android developement , although I am CS myself. I just want my games to run smooth, not like the way I play civilization 2 rev on my i9300 now.

Why upgrade from stock?

I apologize if this subject has been covered before but my searches did not turn up anything. I am an Android newbie with a new Tab 10.1. It seems to work quite well but since the OS allows for easy customization and many people do it, I feel like I am probably missing something. What is there to be gained by moving away from stock? With so many options out there, how does one choose between them?
If there is an article or forum thread that covers this subject in language that newbies will understand, I would really appreciate being pointed in that direction. If such a document does not exist, hopefully someone can answer the questions here.
Visual mods to performance enhancemants are why people tinker with Android ad their devices.
Read as much as you can before you do anything or make any changes.
As far as which is best. That's up to you. Try them all until you find what you like.

I agree Beezer that reading is the key to android world. try as much as you like because it is very hard to brick android devices
Thanks guys, I am sure that you are right about reading as much as possible. The problem is that I am so green that I do not even know what I don't know. Any suggestions on where to start my research?

Galaxy Task ftw...
I have been running Task's roms since I got my tab. His current rom GalaxyTask v6.3 is as smooth it gets at least until an ICS variety is available.
Link is in my signature.
I think the thing to do is just use your Tab for a while before getting stuck into rooting it, give yourself chance to discover it's shortcomings (if any), if you feel it isn't quite up to par, look around for the most suitable fix.
I've had my Tab since August and I haven't yet felt the need to root it, I do keep looking at the threads in the dev section though, one day I'll get tempted but that's not today.
I'll try and hold out for official updates, unless I get really bored and decide to risk my warranty status.
turn to the darkside of rooting and adding a rom. at first i was nervous but after you get a feel of the roms like tasks roms.. omg there is no turning back. it is like night and day and you'll never want to go back to stock

are you still waiting android on wave?

I am sorry but we won't get android wave, it is not a popular device and people are happy with only bada.
For sure !
Bada is a good OS but Android is even better.
And it is always a pleasure to have a dual boot device and to switch between OS.
I'm outta here. having just got a Sony Ericsson ray which is roughly equivalent in hardware terms I've discovered a wonderful new mobile life where the OS really works.
random lagging totally not present on android 2.3.4. on BADA this is still present and there are even random crashes (insufficient memory). I've seen Android baulk when doing Facebook + Google navigation + music + just pictures. when returning to the home page some icons take a second or two to fill. that's it.
Web browser : woah! at last a browser that properly handles full desktop sites complete with flash. even chatroulette works! oh and it doesn't forget passwords too.
gps : hot lock in under 10 seconds EVERY TIME
cold fix in under 1 minute using agps. around 3 minutes without data. admitted the phone probably has a more recent chipset but then I've seen a Samsung galaxy S work nearly as well, why not the wave!?
navigation : Google navigation built in. perhaps this is a gadget so I tried igo and sygic.. no stuttering whatever. finally a phone with gps that just works without worrying if it has crashed or is still stuttering at the last junction. Why does bada stutter whereas android doesn't and on similar hardware?!
oh the apps! enough said
Customisation on android is unbelievable. hey I think I'll swap out the keyboard for something better, no problem! Samsung please unlock the OS.
and on a final note, I video skyped my family today using the phone. Samsung, unlock voip now or better dump BADA and give the wave a well deserved android rom please.
Thank you and goodbye BADA.
A lesson in how not to do it.
The project has failed because of pig headedness and neglect. People asking the questions they where told not to, leading to developers getting irate and walking away (this however, is something which any developers must face with a grin and bare it so they don't have any excuse either). In my opinion the Wave community don't deserve Android on their devices.
Sorry if I've offended anyone with this but i have been following this section for many months and over that time the above has become painfully obvious to me.
I hope the developers involved go off to be successful with projects on other devices.
All the best.
While the project could've been handled better, I wouldn't say it has failed yet. Rebellos and Oleg are still working on it AFAIK.
Hope to get android rom for Wave soon! Thank you developers! We only use normal phone for Call/Msg features but we need more than that with a smart phone. Bada is not so bad but i think samsung must do so much to improve it, apps, memories manage etc...

Trust me on this, they won't, but I've been using it like you, the dual boot isn't much of an inconvinience to me. The only problems I've had are lack of 3G, accelerometer and some apps not working due to Froyo/Filesystem.
I've got round all the other problems ^^
Are you kidding me? We can't reaching Android level because of you and you-like HUMANS. Please stop demotivating us and get the hell out of here...
Yeah i'm looking forward for it patiently ^^
what a silly and useless thread... closing this is the only sensefull thing about stuff like that.... i does not help anyone-.- demotivating developers is the only effect of threads like that
all said. i'm in for android on wave2.
well,
sitting in a chair for 10 hours daily... working on some IT **** is making me suffocate.
BADA has no release of v2.0 for my region and i'm stuck with v1.2.
im just a jughead.. a lazy bastard who wants to have fun with this new toy called S8530.
I hope all the devs round here help each other and do some real cool things with their brains.
all said. i'm in for android on wave2.
It's a shame that this excellent hardware cannot yet run Android complete with modem chip drivers. I am still waiting for android on Bada as I have a number of people around me who like me have been decieved my BADA. If I can help, please feel free to contact me on the forum
p.s. I point out that I'm by no means a dev but I'm capable of flashing firmwares on my GT8500.
no, sold it!
The Wave isn't as good as you think. I hated the pentile screen, the round edges that made it slip out of my hands all the time, the ****ty OS and the small screen.
Bought the HD2 and it is a whole different class. Sorry guys, but the bada phones are literally cheap crap. The OS is at least as important as the hardware. Bada is crap, no matter what you say.
Get an Android smartphone, you'll be much much happier!

I think that this thread have to be closed, it is not the spirit of xda.
All member sould support all developments as it is the goal of xda.
Also the hardware of the Waves are really good ,and as you said the os is very important, porting android will make of the Waves a wonderful device.
By buying a new device and to tell all the xda community that you think that the Waves phones are crap you just actually said that you are weak (for the xda community).
I can say I've now given up waiting.
I'm tired of the Wave, it's boring me and I can see no Android port coming around anytime soon. I have the resources to buy a new phone, hopefully going to be a Tegra 3 monster.
I will make sure the damned thing does all I want this time!
I respect the work that the people here at XDA are doing, but I think even they know this will never be finished, I guess it's a learning curve.
I tried to get some interest built up and succeeded in some ways, but oh well.
Bada is dead, but wave is superb!
Ok, i want an android phone with basically same specs with wave and in any case hardware call buttons and not touch. I cannot find anything like that!

[Q] Developing for SGH-i717

Hello, I currently own an SGH-i717 and would like to start rom developing for it and would like to know where to start. If I was a complete noob and compared to most of the people here I might be, how would I download 4.0.3 source code, use adb with my phone and etc etc. I find it all very interesting but I have no idea where to start.
I am asking for help with this specific device, then maybe onto porting for other devices but this model has a very sore lack of developers for it and since I own an ATT Note I would like to start the development for it regarding ICS and etc. Also why is there a lack of developers for this model's roms?
Thanks for any and all help regarding this issue and I am excited to get started developing for you guys!
I think you need something called android sdk

So what do I win if I vote in the poll?

If that was the case, then why aren't there ice cream sandwich roms for att note?
and also, what do I search for? I'm very busy so I don't have time to mess with google all day. I need someone who is willing to work with me on educating a new developer, that maybe in turn had someone to learn from before them that appreciates a new (quality)developer.
To keep things simple here... Please refrain from jerky comments as I am trying to maintain progression in this area and again I am a very busy person so I would appreciate it if we kept this thread professional.
Thanks again for any help you care to give! I apologize for being a beginner, but everyone has to start somewhere... right?

I already have the Android SDK, but I'm not sure how to use it for developing. I tried once and ended up frustrated with it. Are there easy to understand tutorials somewhere around here that might help a beginner?
I've managed to unbrick my captivate using ADB once but it was very foreign to me and I was kinda impressed I even pulled off sending it into download mode. Thanks for helping!

It's good to see someone with a lot of drive to develop, but the biggest hurdle isn't building AOSP from source. You need to get a working kernel that is compatible with ICS and all the Notes hardware. You can't google search how to do that. In reality it's almost impossible to do if you don't have extensive experience with that sort of thing.
We need the source code from Samsung for the Note and as far as I know, there is no source code out yet for the Note (for any version of Android). The roms you are seeing right now (two that Im aware of) are basically rigged versions of the stock rom where things have been removed (bloatware) and a few things have been added that conveniently worked out of the box without messing with code.
The real work will come when we have some source code to work with.
Ok, what's next?

Okay well that's a start... does anyone know where I can find a stock version of ICS to study it's code and experiment? I found source codes for SGH-i717 here
opensource(dot)samsung(dot)com
(I need more posts to make that a link, lol)
I searched for i717 and it came up with four source results on samsung's opensource search bar but I don't know what the four results are for and what the difference between them all are(unless it means it is for att or tmobile or etc, etc.), if you can tell me any info on these then I would be greatly appreciative.
Yeah, I have no clue how to do most things with coding for android but I do understand how to flash correctly, root and all that jazz. I just lack the programming skills and work flow it takes to make all this. I am downloading java for dummies and learning how to use XML files, but I am wondering if there is something else I should study too?
It sucks that I came here starting from scratch basically but I have learned a lot from here in a short amount of time, I appreciate all of the developers who have made the roms I love along the way, I am just growing impatient with the far and few between updates for your devices and I want to see updates for our devices come faster and the only way to do that is to do something about it. So I am very grateful for any help I get regarding this.
Where can I start with the kernel search? Is that what everyone is waiting on to start developing ICS for this phone? Does anyone know if one exists?
Another Question
What's the difference between a kernel and a rom? Basically.. what the heck is it in lamen's terms?

[Q] What 2do after unboxing galaxy note ?

Hey all,
I am switching frm BB to android and am quite excited for it. I ordered note for at&t frm amazon.com for 200$$...seems to be a good price.
Now being completely new to the android world and to the world of rooting, flashing, etc. I would appreciate some help or opinions.
After reading various forums and threads, the first things I will do after getting my device is to root it. I will use rootgalaxynote dot com for that.
Next comes upgrading to ICS. This is where I am confused. There are so many versions, how do you guyz figure out which one is the best or the latest. It was soo easy in blackberry, there was a linear numbering system where 7.1 is better than 7.0 and so on. But in adroid, there are sooo many different names like onlyone, noteworthy, cm9, saurom...how to choose one and which one is the latest ?
Next, I have to enable free tethering to my laptop. I had this app on my BB from tether.com, but I don't know which app to use on Note and how to make it work. Any help will be highly appreciated.
Lastly, it would be gr8 if you could let me know what more to do to make my note more useful and efficient with good signal strength and battery life. Also recommendations for the must-have apps would be great.
Thank you.

First off...Welcome.
All of the names you listed are ROMs. They all run on the latest ICS leak 4.0.4. But since you're new to android, Id recommend stock ICS.
The latest ICS leak is called UCLE2. If you want to try it out stock ICS first before flashing roms, you need to download the ICS UCLE2 leaked "tar" file. http://www.ponack.net/designgears/leaks/SGH-I717UCLE2_74A55FA71D15964F9EC9E9489B34DE4E.exe
Be sure to download this file from your computer, not your phone.
I ffound some instructions on how To do it. Make sure you READ it atleast 5 times before actually doing it. ALSO, Be sure to have all the files you need before attempting. If you get confused, search it up on XDA...as most people have already posted it. If not, don't hesitate to ask.

I would have to advise waiting a while.
1. Keep in mind what it means to root a phone. You are giving yourself the highest access and control priveleges on your devise and remaining at that privelage level from here on out. In the IT world this is actually a huge nono for security. Look at what you are downloading. What does the app want for permissions? Why does a live wallpaper need full network access ? Why does it need to be able to keep the phone from sleeping? Malware for android is on the rise but a rooted phone is by far the most vulnerable. With android, the security of our devises rests on us not being brain dead like iFail users. In return we get nearly unlimited potential on what can be ran on our phones.
2. People forget that this is xda DEVELOPERS. If you are expecting a 100% polished and refined product without hickups here and there then you are in the wrong place. Yes the roms are fantastic. We have some real talent working on the galaxy note but don't expect the moon.
3. Don't start trying to root and flash until you are comfortable with the terminology that gets tossed around. If you don't know what CWM stands for then you haven't studied enough. Guides to accomplish flashing and rooting exist but trying to follow along with no concept of what is going on can lead to a lot of frustration if not disaster. If you don't understand why you need to do something, don't do it.

i know you're eager but enjoy your stock rom for a while. also you may not appreciate the responses you will get asking these most basic of questions. all of them have answers easily available in these subforums either by browsing or the search function. those questions have been answered 1000+ times so dont be suprised when no one jumps to give you the answers. this is xda DEVELOPERS (i.e. advanced users) not Noobs 'r Us. have fun learning as we all did.

[Q] samsung galaxy a3/a5

sorry if this is in the wrong place, but i have recently bought the A5 (a5009) and have searched high and low on xda, but cannot find any support for the phone on this forum. As it is related to the alpha line, i was wondering if this sub-forum will be the place for news or ROMs for the A3/A5/A7? or have i missed something?
i feel its a great phone, but touchwiz is so ugly compared to stock android (in my opinion), and this could sway me away from the phone if there is no support.
i have noticed that it can be rooted already, but i dont see much point unless there are custom roms available or am i missing the point?
many thanks

If you can, return your A5 and get the alpha! . It is the value for money phone of the new series... It has 3x faster cpu and many times faster GPU and better camera than A5. :good::good::good:
To be honest, i don't think that anybody with some hardware knowledge will buy A5 or A7 at least until the price drops to adequate levels.
I don't want to turn this into a comparison thread as I just wanted to know where on xda I can find out about the new A series, but the alpha here in the UK is more expensive.
With my job, having an expensive phone is not a good idea as it can get damaged easily, that's why I went with a mid - range phone this time. I still have time to think though, so I may change the phone yet.
Has the alpha got many roms available for it?

There is ongoing CM11 port and there are 2 custom roms based on stock ROM.
And i think, that there must be separate subforum for A series...
If you root your phone you can remove samsung crap and install launchers... and you'll get whatever software experience you want, you just need to spend some time with it.
P.S. look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1660354&page=1712 it seems thet there are several requests for A5 forums... Just wait (and maybe add request) and there will be forums for your beautiful device to!
thanks for the help!

Exactly! I've searched everywhere and I couldn't find good resources for the A7 or for any of the A series. Like you did, I did find a how-to-root guide but I don't see much point either without custom roms. I was actually hoping for an AOSP rom too and this is usually where I find everything I need but there's no forum yet :/

I haven't noticed one opening up so far. There is a lot of call for one in the thread I mentioned. I'm assuming the forum would be announced if one opens up?

Hello all, I have been following everything about the A3 recently since a cousin of mine just bought it; it´s so sad that there isnt a forum about this device. I would be happy to help on any new brews
It would be nice if they create a Galaxy A series forum. I have an A3, its a great small phone. I use it as my side phone(got a Note 4).
Recovery
Hey guys, I just found a Recovery, but it's Chinese. Working fine on A500M. Just flash with Odin. Now we can try to port Roms from other 410 SoC based devices!
ps: turn the phone on normally, and when the screen turn on, press volume down + power + home (yup, the same buttons of the download mode)
Srry by the bad english, I'm Brazilian
I was looking to get the A5 tomorrow...but the lack of a forum and ROMs is really making me hesitate.
