[Q] confused about main firmware and rom bases - AT&T HTC One (M7)

First of all this is my first post. Hello to everyone. I have been searching/reading thru these forums. Great source of info.
Phone info:
Currently S-OFF, unlocked, lateset AT&T 4.4.2 firmware, viperone 6.2.1, twrp
I have a pretty good comprehension of how to install or revert pretty much anything that can be done to this phone and have done so with great success. What I don't understand is the relationship between the firmware base of an RUU and the build of any given ROM. How is it that a custom Rom based off let's say x.xx.401.x work with x.xx.502.x main version? The devs say to update to the most current available firmware. Does that mean I have to flash a firmware base that matches what the Rom base for optimal performance? Because I originally thought that was the case and when I did my phone developed syncing issues particularly with the stock mail and weather apps. They would only sync over WiFi. Everything else about the phone worked as normal. Believing there was a problem with the Rom I flashed a few different popular roms on here. Always returning to full AT&T stock first. I later fully converted to GPE and to my surprise everything worked as normal. So I then converted to stock developer edition by way of zip flash and RUU exe. (By the way, when I say stock I mean s-off & unlocked but otherwise factory.) Received all the ota's. Main version would show as x.xx.1540.x. supposedly this would make my phone a dev edition with AT&T as the provider. And yet the syncing problems returned. So once again I returned back to factory AT&T 4.4.2 and all returned to normal. I then decided to try and use a Rom based off 4.4.2 and not one from 4.4.3; expecting the syncing issues to return only this time they didn't. So now I am really confused.
My questions are:
If coming from 4.4.2 factory firmware, is it best to run a Rom from the same base or am I doing something wrong and I should be able to use a Rom from a newer base on an older firmware?
If the developer edition and GPE can be carried by AT&T then why was I having syncing issues with the developer edition and not GPE?
I thought by being s-off I should be able to flash any RUU from any carrier without problems, just that I would be limited to the network capabilities of the actual service provider.
Everything I know about this stuff I learned from this forum. But I think I missed something.

My AT&T M7 always works best on the stock software.
The only thing I could figure is that AT&T have refined the software and radio so well that all the other versions pale in comparison.
I noticed the Developers Edition always had a horrible Bluetooth and WiFi radio. Signal strength was always weak compared to the stock AT&T software.
To answer your questions
Flash any version Roms you want on the latest AT&T firmware. And you'll have the best your phone can be.

I get so mixed up with all the terms being used interchangeably. So to clarify, as long as I am using the latest firmware from AT&T (currently 5.12.502.2 kk4.4.2), I can flash any custom ROM base. Whether it is based on 4.4.2 or higher. Correct?
I still want to know why I experienced the sync problems while running the factory x.xx.1540.x dev edition but not with the GPE. I never tried the factory x.xx.401.x WWE firmware either. However, I just got an sim unlock code from AT&T earlier today. I'm gonna try that maybe tomorrow and see if it makes a difference altho I don't believe it should. And I'm not gonna switch to a different provider.
Honestly, I was happy with my phone before I got wrapped up in all of this. I just decided to tinker with the phone and the mod bug has bitten.

I think I figured this out. I continued to flash different ROMs and firmwares with the same results as I posted in the OP. Then earlier tonight I decided to try to convert to developer edition again (x.xx.1540.x) and flashed an ruu.zip, went thru the setup process, and as before the same issues returned. Then I had an idea; lets try something I haven't done yet. I pulled the SD card and factory reset the phone. After I completed the basic setup process I inserted the SD card and let the phone do its thing. The phone now works as it should (same as it does with the AT&T xx.502.x firmware installed).
Just figured I would pass this along.
Cheers

I give up
I thought I had this figured out. Last night after to converting to dev edition with all updates, everything seemed normal. I flashed the latest viperone rom as it is the rom I want. Turn the phone on this morning and the sync problems are present once again. I have searched thru a tom of pages on this sight alone. I cant find an answer. So its back to stock at&t.

I solved the problem. Incorrect settings in 4636 menu.

[Q] Any custom ROM for Australian Telstra released Atrix yet?

Is any able to advise me if the Telstra version of the Atrix would have similar issues to the Bell OS, if I decided to load up Motobread, Ginger blur etc etc.

I may have missed something but i followed the steps to install gingerblur and well, it bricked my Telstra atrix that I only got yesterday
Luckily i made a backup of the telstra firmware as soon as i got it so its all good. Just got no idea on how to install CF. The telstra atrix i'm assuming is the same as the AT&T atrix because they are both "Motorola Atrix MB860" but i could be missing something
Uh oh, radio's and fingerprint reader aren't working
Oh, and it also wont turn itself off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You guys should probably be following instructions for the Bell Atrix. Bell users have been successful at flashing the telstra firmware and then installing grey/ginger blur and so I'd start there.
Hope it helps
DarkRyoushii
PS: OMG Atrix is released in Australia now? I should go find a telstra store and check out the differences, my Atrix that I've had since launch (from AT&T then unlocked) is the only one I've actually used so I'd love to see if the bugs in mine still exist in telstra's hahaha
EDIT: Oh and if u need a briefing. Bootloader Bypass has basically dropped off the radar and turned silent, probably still being worked on in private chats to avoid spam and offtopic posts. 2nd Init works (a different way to install custom ROMs however unable to modify kernel) but there are no ROMs developed yet, probably also being worked on in private chats if you are interested check out the freenode IRC #moto-atrix
All ROMs released as of writing are pseudoROMS that only theme and lightly modify the current OS
Thanks

I had a really bad feeling that that would be the case. Bell users appear to have a limited range of options compaired to the AT&T users. Now it seems that the Telstra users will have even less options than the Bell users.
I have at least managed to load HeLauncher, Pyramid & Fancy widgets tonight and now I've have more of the options that I wanted from the HTC desire sense UI.
Still trying to work out how to get my hands on the widget/live weather wallpaper that has that Super Cool looking windscreen wiper that clears the rain away.... Any ideas on how to get ahold of it?
Thanks again.
limited how? what version is your telstra rom? (wondering if its the same as the one that is already on this site)
as for the windshield wiper, that is from sense....oh i see you found the mock sense thread.

My system version is;
Version.4.1.47,MB860.Telstra.en.AU
Thanks for the info, I will start looking for the other one on this site.
So i can guess we can all agree that Telstra's Atrix cannot be flashed with custom ROM's from AT&T. I just tried it again tonight with different roms and all works up, shows "Ginger Blur" or whatever it is and then the red blinking failed boot and it just tries over and over to boot. I'm gonna flash back to OLYEM_U4_1.4.2_SIGNED_USAOLYEMTELSTRA_P029_A020_M005_HWolympus_1g_1FF and just sit and wait till something comes up unless someone's got something they wanna try
they should be able to flash using the gingerblur/greyblur guide by seven2009. you may not be able to deodex with the same instructions but installing should be fine, you would need to flash grey blur and factory reset the device before installing gingerblur.
If that route doesn't work you may need to start by flashing the french rom that is mentioned in that thread first.

You are doing better than me so far, but I must admit that going for custom ROM's has me a bit worried. I flashed my Nokia 5800 and it was better for looks and customisation, but it crashed alot. Then I jail breaked my iSheep (iphone 3G) and that was a little better than stock iOS, but it also crashed alot too.
I am hesitant to play around too much with the Atrix, simply because it's so new, and I was patient enough to wait for the Telstra release (instead of an imported AT&T version). However I found this thread that may shed some light on the topic at hand.

User "LeChuck" has some great knowledge and info about this Telstra firmware.
I am just not adventurous enough at the moment to have a crack at it. All I need to do, is find out how I could hard reset back to stock firmware if I don't like mods, then i'll give it a go. Even since rooted it over the weekend, I've notice3d more little issues each day I play around with things.
Can it be "Un-rooted" (is that an actual term used???) back to standard?

You mean, you would like the procedure of installing a custom ROM on those specs? I would too.
It's mainly the BL unlock process I am not sure about on Telstra Atrix of the same spec. I'm comfortable with the rest.

Firmware?

So i haven't been active with the rezound lately and just finished finals and am able to start finally getting back into the scene of development. I am not huge on snazzy roms, I go for reliability. I had a question though, I guess there are new firmwares out and you will need to relock your phone etc. How do I check what firmware I have?
I am currently on CLEANROM Developer Edition (from awhile back) -- I do remember doing some firmware patch during install.

I have stock rom from nandroid backup that i've downloaded. android 4.4.2.
So the question goes like that, AT&T release the OTA 4.4.4 yet?
If so, why can't i see the OTA?
I have stock root does it a problem ? should i remove root? if so how i do that?
I need to make stock bootloader and all that stuff?
Last question, when AT&T will release the android lolipop 5 ?

I hesitate to answer this because so much is already in posts and threads....
1. AT&T has released the 4.4.4 OTA already
2. I don't know why you can't see it. Are you using an AT&T SIM card? Are you logged onto the AT&T network?
3. Root doesn't matter, but a stock recovery is required to actually install the update (but not to download it)
4. Stock bootloader isn't required. I don't know if it needs to be locked or not (probably not - just guessing).
5. Please contact AT&T for the answer to your version 5 update question.

If you're not using an AT&T SIM card or on the AT&T network, you will not be able to receive an update from AT&T. I'm not sure how you thought that might happen.
Please search this XDA forum on how to install a recovery (stock or otherwise). There are LOTS of threads on this. And if you don't know what it is, you probably shouldn't be mucking around with your phone yet. Read as much as possible first - If you don't, you'll be asking how to unbrick your phone.

OK - here's the scoop:
1. If you've put an Orange SIM card into your unlocked HTC One M8 (AT&T branded), it is an Orange device now. AT&T is just a label on the phone (logo on the lower back of the device).
2. If Orange Israel releases an update, you will most likely get it. Both T-Mobile and AT&T released updates about a month ago, which is why your brother got the update on T-Mobile.
3. You can still update your M8 to version 4.4.4 - but you'll need to ensure you have the proper firmware installed or you'll have problems. Version 4.4.4 has a different data structure than 4.4.2.
Again - read up on the general and Q/A threads on this forum. You can get your device updated to whatever version you want, it's just a matter of reading.

Question - is the ROM on your phone from AT&T or from Orange, or was it flashed from some other source? The ROM is specific to a device, not a carrier, so you SHOULD be able to flash the ROM of your choice, as long as it works with the device (but keep in mind the fact that you will need a ROM for the GSM version of the M8, as opposed to, say, a Verizon or Sprint variant).
If it's from AT&T, you may be able to apply the updates from saved OTA file (not sure how to apply, but it can be done).

I also tried an L version 5 ROM, but didn't like the fact that it didn't work with Xposed modules, which I like and use.

These points are not correct. Yes, the phone is being run on the OP's local network Orange (not AT&T). But the phone will only receive and be able to install an Orange OTA if its on Orange software and Orange CID/MID. If its running AT&T software, it will not receive OTA is most foreign countries. AT&T is the oddball here, as most other variants will still update on other networks. AT&T devices must be connected to the AT&T network to get official OTA.
The way to update the device by official means (when not on AT&T's network) would be the AT&T RUU.

If you don't want such headaches, don't buy carrier branded US devices for use in other countries. I strongly believe this.

You didn't "almost brick" the device. A brick means that you phone is totally inoperable to the point the screen doesn't even power on; and the only way to recover is by opening the phone and JTAG or replacing the mainboard.
You probably just put the phone in a condition where it would not boot; which is a fairly common issue that crops up for just about anyone modding phones, at one time or another. And how to recover from such conditions is pretty basic info; and something anyone who is modding phones should now how to do.
I'm sorry if any of this seems harsh. But I believe the above to be more FACT than opinion, and for your own good. I agree with the former notions that you (and anyone who want to mod the hone) should always research thoroughly and understand before messing with the phone.

God knows. There is never any firm release date for AT&T (one of the many reasons to avoid US carrier branded devices if you are in another country). They just released 4.4.4 a couple weeks ago. It was delayed for months due to issues implementing Voice Over LTE. Hopefully, the LP update won't suffer the same length of delay.

Since there is no LP stock ROM or "official" firmware for AT&T, you won't be able to run Sense LP at this time unless you have s-off (and can then update the firmware by "unofficial" means).
You can however flash a Lollipop GPE or AOSP ROM, but you will still likely need to update to at least Android 4.4.4 to get a firmware and/or hboot that supports the specific ROM.
Battery and performance are always going to vary from one user to the next. Variables such as how one uses the phones; and especially your local reception will greatly impact battery life. There is never going to be one ROM that has "strong" battery for every user in every situation. Your best bet is to try the ROMs out, and see what works best for your situation.

I don't know what RUU means.. There is a simple way to update to 4.4.4 ?
redpoint73 said:

RUU = ROM update utility. Its an official .exe (Windows PC required) that completely re-images the phone, including stock ROM, stock recovery and all firmware.
If this is the path you choose, its pretty simple:
Download the RUU to your PC.
Backup any personal data, as the phone will be wiped by RUU.
Connect the phone to PC in fastboot mode.
Relock the bootloader with command fastboot oem lock (not required with s-off).
Simply run the RUU .exe, and it will do the rest (you click a few confirmations dialogs, but that is it).
RUU and more detailed instructions at the following link, under "Manual system update instructions": http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8-att/news/
As RUU installs stock recovery, you will need to unlock the bootloader again, and flash custom recovery again if you want to root or flash custom ROMs.

Which ROM do you think the best. I'm thinking about ViperOne 3.2.1 , Android Revolution hd 34.0 or CM 12 .
I really like the design of the CM12 but i heard that the boomsound ain't works, is that true? that's means the quality of the speakers will be very bad?

I don't believe in recommending "best" ROMs. What's best for me, may no be the best for you. Especially since our network requirements are very different. And the choice of ROM is also largely a matter of personal preference and taste. In fact, until recently the XDA rules did not allow posting of "best ROM" threads as the discussions are largely irrelevant, and just resulted in fanboy pissing contests.
You really can't go wrong with any of the mentioned ROMs.
Although be aware that current ARHD is based on Android 5.0. So you need to update to Lollipop firmware or else suffer major bugs (broken WiFi is the most common). For the AT&T version of this phone, you can only update to LP firmware if you have s-off (until a LP is released by AT&T, for you by RUU).
Yes, any features that require Sense framework will not be present on CM12, including Boomsound and dual camera. Whether the sound is "bad" or not, I can't say. I'm not a CM12 user. But remember that Boomsound is just a software enhancement. The high quality of the speakers (for a smartphone) is largely a factor in the sound quality. If you like CM12 design, why not flash it (once on the proper hboot) and see for yourself what you think?

The RUU file isn't open. I boot into bootloader and type the command but then this says something failed and reboot my device. Then i boot into fastboot again and i saw its says relocked so i guess that's ok.
Fine, tried to plug into my PC while the phone is awake and open, the file can't seems to open, not even when i plug it while im in the bootloader.
did i do something wrong?

Make sure you have HTC drivers installed on your PC. Phone should be connected in in fastboot mode.
If the RUU application doesn't even open, it doesn't sound like an issue with the phone. Even if there was an issue with the phone (wrong RUU , unlocked bootloader, etc.) the RUU would still open and start to run, but it would just give you an error message telling you what was wrong. Maybe just a bad download, try to download again.

Bro, i managed to upgrade to 4.4.4 . I flashed ViperOne 3.2.1 at first, didn't like it, so i tried android revolution hd 34.0 and this ROM is amazing, love the design love it!
Have only 2 problems so far, first, the TV app , just got every 1-2 min a message: TV stopped .. so i kinda deleted this, but fine i can live without it.
But the problem that actually do me a troubles, is the screenshot, when i try to take a shot of my screen it's says. couldn't take a screenshot, not remaining space or program does not support..
Sorry about my English if you can't understand what i say..

[Q] Is it just me, or is everyone with S-on stuck?

I am fairly new to the whole ROM thing on this device. I have experience with older phones and am just getting back into this recently. That being said...
Current state is: Bootloader unlocked, currently running stock 4.4.4, Sense 6.0, Kernel 3.4.0-g931e842, Build 3.42.502.1 CL441323; ROM applied via RUU. (RUU_M8_[email protected]41216A_40.34.C35006.02_F_release_407726_signed_2)
Bottom line is that since I have attempted to root and flash ROMs I have had issues with making and/or receiving calls, or no SIM recognized at all, requiring S-off/firmware upgrades, etc.
I am looking for a stable build ROM which is compatible with the 4.4.4 firmware on my device which can be applied without obtaining s-off. Main goal is to be able to personalize the UI and to run a faster, debloated ROM.
Tried first using Renovate 5.0... could not receive calls on that one.
Removed. back to stock.
Next I found a Lollipop 5.0.1 ROM (HTC_One_M8_Lollipop_5.0.1LRX22C) which did not appear to require firmware updates... seemed to work great... except that I could not receive calls...
Removed... back to stock.
Next, I used ViperOneM8 and really liked it, but had to abandon once I was told by people that they were still getting sent straight to voice mail.
I did get some calls, so I tested having some people call me and it seemed fine... well turned out that during those tests I was on the 3G network... Once again, troubleshot down to the fact that anytime I was on 4G network I could not receive calls. Having had no way to change my network selection in this ROM (error was displayed when I attempted this). Contacted their support to confirm my issue. They are aware, no resolution available.
Removed... back to stock.
So my question is, are there any options OTHER THAN paying $25 to use Sunshine to get S-off, upgrade firmware? I am not a developer and I love my M8. I know there are people here who know exactly what I need and understand what I am looking for. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I can't tell what ROM your are talking about based on that description. Possibly GPE stock rooted?
What I can tell you, is that most any Lollipop Sense ROM will have issues when used alongside 4.4.4 firmware.
Sense 4.4.4 ROMs will play well with your firmware, as will a number of 4.4.4 and 5.0 GPE and AOSP ROMs (that specifically state they support 4.4.4 firmware). However, when it comes to AT&T, there is more at play then whether the ROM corresponds to the firmware. That other complication is that AT&T does some annoyingly unique things with their network. In the past, this has included changes to build.prop and even the signal icons, which sometimes caused "international" custom ROMs to have some issues. And now you see that their HD Voice (Voice over LTE) is messing with some custom ROMs. As the other thread you posted in mentioned "blame AT&T".
Running an AT&T base 4.4.4 ROM is your best bet for trouble-free use on AT&T's network. WNC's ROM might fit the bill for what you want (debloated) and is often where I send folks that want a bug-free experience on AT&T (while retaining some AT&T specific features). The 3.28 version ROM is what you should try: http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-htc-one-m8/development/att-4-4-3-2-22-1540-3-debloated-sense-6-t2837365
There are other ROMs that might work for you. But the above is my suggestion, at least as a start.

You are correct. It is a GPE stock rooted Lollipop ROM. It works just fine as long as I have 3G selected as my network, but it is just not as much flash as I wanted.
I am going to give the one you sited here a look and maybe give it a try. I appreciate your taking the time to reply. It was helpful and informative.
Erring on the Side of Caution
I'm in a similar quandry as the OP. I have lots of experience flashing ROMS on my older phones but trying to keep up with all the changes since getting my M8 has me confused.
Here's my current setup. I'm running Skydragon after trying the last 4.4 milestone of Liquidsmooth. I like both, but am interested in keeping up with the Lollipop guild.
I have Sunshine installed but when I ran it I found out I need to remove or disable Xposed Installer to continue. I'll deal with that by disabling it.
UPDATE: Well, that didn't work. Xposed was installed with the ROM and there's no option to uninstall it.
My biggest concern is updating the firmware. From my bootloader info, I'm assuming that I'm way behind on the latest firmware, but after reading so many threads about updating, my head is swimming.
If I need to update, I just want to make sure that I don't brick my phone.

Return to stock ROM and stock recovery, for optimal configuration for sunshine to work. RUU is probably the easiest way to get back to stock. Backup your personal data, than relock bootloader to run RUU.

Yes, based on your hboot number, your firmware is about as old as it gets (Android 4.4.2).
You can RUU to 4.4.4 firmware without s-off; and Lollipop Skydragon GPE should work fine with 4.4.4 firmware.
You can of course still s-off and update to Lollipop firmware. But you need to use some other firmware besides AT&T (such as Dev Edition, Euro, etc.), since they haven't released a Lollipop update (and therefore no firmware).

I need your help please.

I'm new to this forum but any kind of help will be appreciated. I got an HTC One M8. I'm African and I found some AT&T apps on the phone. I'm guessing it's some sort of service provider in the West. I found out that my phone is stuck on Android KitKat. It doesn't upgrade or even find options to upgrade the OS. I tried finding some internet help. It might be the AT&T keeping it from finding the update. Is there anyway to still get the update officially as the phone has nice specs but is not compatible for some apps because of the OS.
I'm also open to the suggestion of rooting as that has recently been seeming like the only option I might have left. I'm not worried about warranty as my country is not one for giving warranties on anything. I'm only scared of bricking my phone.
So if you can I'd really appreciate if you can give me a step by step process of rooting my phone, unlocking bootloader, turning S-Off and installing a new OS. Suggestions of good custom ROMS will be accepted too.
Most US carrier branded M8 versions will only OTA update if connected to that US carrier (in this case, AT&T)
You can update using the RUU tool. See my Index thread, and look under the "RUUs": https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2751432
Marshmallow is the last official software version, and that RUU number is 6.20.502.5
Thanks
Although, I have solved my problem. Ended up wiping the whole phone, OS, firmware and all. Luckily, I had a recovery tool. Reinstalled Skydragon RUU and some firmware from some other thread. Now it works fine. That's what I'm using to write this note.
Thanks for the reply tho
Good work sorting it out on your own. I know you are new to the forum. In the future, I'd suggest "closing the loop" on posts you've made (especially a new thread you started) by posting that you solved the problem (and how you did it, for the benefit of others).
Also, I know you made the post some time ago. I only responded yesterday, since I don't often check this (AT&T specific) section too often, due to low activity/traffic. There is more activity on the "generic" M8 thread (not carrier specific). So if you have further questions, I'd advise to post their in the future (and mention that you have the AT&T version M8): https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8
Although even that section is getting pretty quiet these days, due to the age of the device!

It was either a stock/official (HTC) RUU or the Skydragon ROM. There is not such thing as an RUU for a custom ROM (such as Skydragon.
