[Q] Bought Gear S in Hong Kong - Samsung Gear S

Hi all,
I bought a Gear S in Hong Kong last week.
I am unable to load the Navigator app, and the existing map program called Amap does not seem to work, I can never get it to get a lock onto the GPS.
Also, the Amap program is the only program that is completely in Chinese, the rest of the programs defaulted to English when I set up via my Note 4.
So, is there another firmware I can flash with the English version of everything?
Or does anyone have information on how to use it?
I know that the GPS in the watch works as I used it to find weather info whilst connected to a 3g network in Thailand.
Any help at all would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

Just curious as to what the full model number is on your unit? It seems like the last letter on the model designates the watch region. I have one coming from Korea with K as the last digit of the model number (SM-R750K), so I may have a similar issue. Unfortunately, genuine Australian stock is unavailable until mid January.

From my understanding, these watches were specially designed for the providers. That meaning, that they are designed as region specific. Now, most of this is done through software design, some hardware, such as antennas and their design requirements.
The navigation app that comes on the ATT model is called "Here". And, so far, is severely lacking in many ways.

I have a Hong Kong gear s that came with amap app, I downloaded the UK firmware from sammobile and flashed with odin 3.09.
It rebooted to the clock face with the amap app still there BUT a simple factory reset on the gear S brought the here maps icon up and NO amap app.

The US T-mobile version ends with a T, the ATT version with an A.. Guessing the Verizon with a V and Sprint with an S?

Funnily enough I just spent the last 3 hours doing just that, I hadn't reset it yet, but now I have and the Amap rubbish has gone.
Thanks man.

Wait, I have SM-R750K.
I can flash a different model Firmware and everything will be fine (Becuase I didn't find a SM-R750K firmware anywhere incase of problems)
-thanks,
AndroidState

Mine was imported from Hong Kong and I flashed the btu (British ) rom without issue. I'm by no way an expert, might be worth a PM to cipherswitch he has a rom thread over in the development section. Hope it works out for you.

Yes. I have a Russian Gear, and re-flashed it in around 10 mins with UK firmware to get the right updates. Surprised at how easy it was!

bands
i am in the us... if I flash the btu firmware will it possibly read my sim card? or are the bands inside the watch phone completely different.

Hi there
any link with instructions for this?? I know how to flash firmwares on cellphones using using Odin and I know where I can download them for my N4. But I'm kinda lost for the Gear S ;-; I just bought a brand new one on eBay for 25 bucks, it's model number is SM-R750K, it should be here in a few days.
Thanks

The only watches that will work in the US are the Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile watches. Its hardware, no software will fix this.

The R750K will not work in the US.

Hey All,
The region lock on the Gear S might not be playing much of a role. It seems the actual device running the Gear Manager determines the availablility of apps for the Gear S. My SM-N9005 is originally from Malaysia which has a CSC of (XAR). And when my SM-R750P (with Japan Rom) is connected to it, I lose access to tons of apps. However, if I use my Tab S (SM-T700) with CSC Code XAR (US Cellular South), I have access to a lot more Apps.
The point here; changing the firmware of the Gear S doesn't seem to be that significant to obtain Apps from the Galaxy App stores.

I'm aware of the band/frequency incompatibility of the hardware, anyways I don't want to use it with a carrier. Just with my devices.

How did this work for you.

Wondering if you received the watch yet, and if it was working for you. I was also thinking about picking up that deal, but don't want to pay any amount for an unusable watch.

Does the region lock on the gear s from abroad still active even if you flash a uk btu rom? Ie my fruend is giving me his from UAE he knows nothing about tech so explaining to him to put his uae sim in the watch and make a call to disable the region lock he prob wont do.
If he doesnt and it's never been used with a sim. Ic i flash the uk btu firmware will the region lock change to a uk one instead or is it hardware region lock as opposed to software?

[Q] 4.1 Update not showing in Kies or OTA

Hi, I have a i9300 (international) S3, , and I wanted to flash the official 4.1 by Kies or OTA, since it's been released some days ago. I see a lot of people getting the Oficial update via Kies (not the Odin method with Poland rom), in the Interantional, the same as me. Might it be that Kies or Samsung doesnt let the update here yet despite it being international (Being even that this phone ISNT from Argentina, it's the international version bought in America I think, or Europe)?
It's not release yet for your country.

Thanks for quick response.
So it's basicaly being "blocked" because the location of my IP, right? Doing some VPN crap could trick that? (asking so I don't waste my time, I know how to do it).
Do you know if in United States the International verison has the update via Kies?

no its being blocked by your devices csc. good day
? Mhm... but I didn't buy it in Argentina, and it's the International version bought directly without carrier and unlocked... what makes then this phone different in CSC to others phones also international and same exact things being updated perfectly then?
It's not release for almost any device. You'll see the update hiting europe in october, and probably other areas too.

Also it says CSC:
LG4 (TPA) ... i dont know what regon that is ..
It seems that It's a bought in Panama, with I9300UWHCLG4 ... it's gonna be a loong time I guess till I have official JB. Dang.
est_cap
At the moment it's largely irrelevant where your phone was bought. JB has only been released on an extremely limited basis - Poland and a smattering of networks in a few countries (though I've seen no one talk about these countries on here). There is no IP blocking. JB just isn't here. And if people are claiming that they're getting JB from Kies, they're lying unless they have Polish phones.

Galaxy S III 4.3?

Anyone know or have a rough guestamate when they will be releasing the 4.3 update or in fact any update? Just i read a while back there was an update due, not official I think but we've had nothing for ages , im getting kinda bored.
I was in the o2 shop is Edinburgh the other day playing with the Galaxy Note 3, saying this is nice and quick and responsive, it had written next to it the samsung mega with no price or info, I'd never heard of so I checked system info and it said Galaxy Note 3, so I thought i'll get some coin together after a week or 2 and get one cos it was gonna be my next new phone anyway, I got home and checked every where online and they aint even released yet, in fact they don't even know the full spec of them, if i'd have know I would of stayed and dug out all the info, DAMN if I was on here more often I would of known.
I do remember it was on 4.2.2 and was really responsive but thats all, shame on me

No. Trust me, if any one of us knew, everyone would know. This forum would be flooded with info.
I read on google some were that 4.2.2 is defo scrapped for 4.3 and thats not coming out till early 2014. Little after the nexus5 comes out. Nexus should be out nov/dec time.

Not all S3's are tied to Networks, so it's not completely their call.
Edit> so what I am saying is even if "networks" are waiting for 4.3, it doesn't mean Samsung aren't releasing 4.2.2 - Many of our S3's get updates directly from sasmung. That's what owning an unbranded handset means. There's a leak of 4.2.2 so they definitely worked on it. They may indeed skip it but they have not officially announced that, ergo it is nothing more than a rumour.
When the big ones make there move the other follow. Orange and o2 run the uk. If they pick not to do something other follow them. As most piggy bk of them.

EE and O2 send out their own updates OTA. Unbranded handsets are network independent and get their updates directly from Samsung. Piggy-Back networks do not pass out OTA updates. All Piggy Back networks use unbranded, Samsung managed handsets. They have no choice in what happens.
So if your on giffgaff which is run on o2 you have it from sam and not o2?

Yep thats' right.
When you buy a phone from O2 directly, you get an O2 branded handset which recieves updates from O2.
If you buy a phone from Carphone warehouse on O2, it will be unbranded. Essentially, CPW will give you the exact same phone no matter what network you go with. Giff Gaff do not even supply phones so, chances are if you buy a handset from somewhere ( a shop) it will be unbranded.
On top of this, if you have an Orange phone on O2, it will still get updates from Orange. It doesn't matter what SIM card you have on the phone. It's to do with the software that's on the phone. If I put an O2 SIM in my Three phone, my updates will continue to come from Three.
So what happends if you change software. Were do you get it then? Nice info btw:thumbup:

Well I have over simplified it. It is more to do with the CSC set within the phone, but it is all part of the software none-the-less.
If you have an O2 branded phone (O2 CSC) and flash Three UK ROM (Official) you will then get your updates from Three. If you Flash UK Unbranded official (BTU CSC) you would get updates from Samsung.
However, if you are in the UK and flash an Indian official ROM (with Indian CSC) you are unlikely to get updates in the UK. KIES would recognise your CSC does not match your geographical area too, so it would refuse you updates. So As long as you Have an official ROM (CSC) from your country, you will get updates from that provided / Samsung.

[Q] "Get More Applications" not working

Hello all,
I got the Gear S and Note 4 a few days ago. When i'm trying to "Get More Applications" (last menu option on the watch itself), I'm getting the following error message on the Note 4 screen (Samsung Gear Apps).
" Error This device does not support Samsung GALAXY Apps. Check available devices on the Samsung GALAXY Apps website. (1004) "
Gear S: SM-R750D
Note 4: SM-N910U
Got the Gear S in Tokyo, Japan and ordered the Note 4 from Expansys website so i don't think it's a region issue? I tried connecting VPN to many locations, cleared cache.. no luck.
I'm using the latest firmware, updated everything. I would assume that Note 4 is compatible with Gear Apps.
Any help would be great!

What do you mean? Samsung Gear is already installed on the phone. All options are working except the "Samsung Gear Apps " .. that's where you can access the Gear apps and that's where i'm getting the error message.
The person is saying that you need to download the app from the phone in order to install it on the gear. Instead of get more apps on the watch go to Samsung Gear app on the phone and click Samsung Gear Apps and try to download. From my understanding the phone will download the apps to the gear unless tizen has its own app store built inside the watch it self
The same problem as me. I got It asswell from Japan.Maybe the same seller on ebay.
Maybe when it is launched in our contries, (me I am in Spain) with a samsung store update its solved or changing the rom for it to recognazile it. My model is ending in d too. I posted my problem a few days ago in opera mini browser thread. Have a look. Also paired with a note 4 ending in F, tried with a note 3, it didnt work. Everything works except you said. I think its a country problem

I will try to go Docomo today and pair the Gear S with their phone. If i have the Gear S and another android from the same shop/region, it could work. They have Note 3 and S5. Will try both.

Well.. I came back from the Docomo shop and I installed the Gear Manager on their demo phone. I connected the gear s with the phone and .. it worked without problems. I installed many apps (ex: mini opera, etc)
So the problem is really related to location/model of the phone. Now, I don't want to go to the store to browser the apps! Hopefully Samsung will fix that.
Thanks a lot for your answer. I have to wait to the 14th and it is launched here in Spain and then an update to fix. Looks like the european phone and japanese watch dont work together only for the apps. Another solution is buying the note edge from docomo. They have it already realased. Jejje. Ok my friend. I believe he is saying his Gear S is a different region than his Note 4 so he went to the store where the Note 4 has the same region as his gear S to test it works. So his Note 4 is a no go until Samsung updates this phone to handle the Gear S. But the demo phone in store runs the firmware compatible with his Gear S that he bought

Correct.. Except I don't think the Gear has anything to do with it. The problem is within Samsung Gear Manager I believe. Also, I was able to install new apps in the store but when you connect it back to your own phone, the Gear S required factory reset! So it's useless. back to square one.
Hope it's just a question of updating the software. I will wait one week

Ok so the Gear S can only be paired to one device at a time or it will factory reset to use a new device. That sucks. Well hopefully the gear manager will be updated Nov 7th with the USA release or sooner so that your gear S can properly connect to your Note 4

Buying a Note 8 Duos SM-N9500 256GB from wondamobile.com

Here in Sweden we officially only have the 64 GB SM-N950F and FD versions available, but since I want masses of storage AND dual SIM cards I decided to go for the Hong Kong version of the SM-N9500 via http://wondamobile.com. In case anyone else is considering doing the same, I thought I would contribute my experience in detail.
TL, DR: Wonda Mobile have been great, they have answered my e-mails promptly and paid the import customs for me very quickly, but I haven't yet tried the phone. (Opening it on Xmas Day.)
I ordered the phone on a Wednesday evening, it arrived the following Monday.
They informed me in an order confirmation e-mail that they would pay any customs charges added. When I received a payment link from DHL, I sent it to Wonda Mobile and they quickly paid it for me.
The phone came with a UK/HK plug, not Euro / F-type sadly. It would have been great if they switched the plug to match the customer’s country of residence. But I was prepared beforehand to keep using some of my current Note 4 chargers (which provide the same amps and volts) with new USB-C cables.
The seal on the box had been cut open. Everything seemed untouched though, so I didn't understand why it had been opened. When I asked Wonda Mobile about it they replied: “Most of our products will unseal for quality check before ship. And it is 100% brand new.”
I started up the phone quickly to check that it was factory reset and the setup guide was already in English. Does anyone know if English is the default in Hong Kong?
My intention is to update this thread when I have tried the phone out. Primarily I'm curious about how/if Samsung Pay will work here in Sweden.
I have the same phone ... Samsung Pay doesn't work here in the UK. I think it will only work in Hong Kong. Enjoy your phone ... it's a great piece of kit!
Sent from my SM-N9500 using Tapatalk
From what I know Sam pay will only work if the bank you use has made an agreement with your bank. In UK I don't think they have any agreement yet as I was unable to use it and when I looked into it they only have less then 10 banks in their scheme. It said on their website that they are working on getting more banks to join Sam pay. Hope they get the UK banks to sign up quick.
I doubt it will work in Sweden yet or anywhere else in Scandinavia.
Thanks for the replies.
Regarding Samsung Pay, I have yet to try it out IRL, but I have added my debit card and it seems to be setup properly. Here in Sweden, Samsung Pay actually seems to have come quite a long way. Several of the major banks support it, including mine (Swedbank), and supposedly nearly all card transaction machines have support for it too. The setup was straight forward and I haven't had to do anything special to get it to work. (But again, I haven't actually tried to use it to pay yet.)
Overall, I'm very pleased with the phone so far. But setting it up can be a little overwhelming. There are so many options and features, and it takes a lot of energy to make informed decisions on all the options.
The phone seems to have come with a full set of languages available. The Swedish language is fine, but has some rough edges here and there. For some reason, the phone came with Facebook and Word, Excel and Powerpoint apps pre-installed and they cannot be (easily) uninstalled, so I have disabled them for now.
Since the phone came with a UK plug I have ordered a EURO type Samsung USB C charger, as well as two Belkin 2 metre USB 2.0 USB A to USB C cables. I hope the latter will be able to deliver full power from the adaptive fast chargers (9V & 1.67A).
I asked for a Rhinoshield Crashguard for Xmas, so that's what I'm using for protection at the moment. I've also got a DBrand black dragon skin for the back which I haven't applied yet. (I'm still very much enjoying the ocean blue back colour.)
I used Sam Pay today and it worked fine!
That's awesome. Sounds like you made a good decision with the N9500. You got all the features you want and Samsung Pay works natively.
I'm jealous of the 256GB of storage, but I love my black N950U. These are amazing devices for sure.
I bought the 128gb version and tried SamPay today. Worked a treat!
Still a bit gutted that the region can't be changed to UK for the offers and loyalty cards but hey, 128gb blue

Cool! Glad to hear it works in the UK too. I wonder if my Swedish setup will work when I visit next time?
You need the "Samsung pay framework apk" and "samsung pay apk" for you country/region. Reinstall it and Samsung pay will work again

Thank you!
I extracted the APK from an s7 but on installing it framework it threw up an error and didn't allow it.
Is that because it was from an s7?

Can't you just download the official firmware (through Sammobile or using SamFirm) and flash it using Odin?
I’d rather pay some one to do it

TAB S6 LTE UK Version...can it be used with an Egyptian Sim ?

Hello everyone!
Okay so first off, sorry for having to post my first post as a question.
So I'm from Egypt (we still don't even have the s5e in stores..), I usually get all my tech from Amazon.com, seeing that the LTE variantof the Tab S6 is not available there yet, I went to check out amazon UK(also has global shipping)
I found an LTE variant of the tablet (Can't link it since I'm a new user) but its the "Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 LTE 256 GB 10.5-Inch Tablet - Mountain Grey (UK Version)". Link: amazon.co.uk/dp/B07W4KVH18?tag=dradisplay0bb-21&ascsubtag=8ae47d4591cfa385f0e63929fb543ed4_CT&ref=dra_a_ms_sb_ho_xx_P600_100
I found alot of questions getting answered by (it'll work only after you make a 10 min phone call in the UK using a UK sim card), is this what they call (Unlocking process) ? and is there anyway I can bypass that ? will I even need to do this ? since someone who lives in the EU asked that question and they said it'll work just fine without going through that process. also I use (Vodafone EG) as my carrier
I do apologies for a somewhat silly question, but I don't quite get how the locked/unlocked/GSM/CMDA thingy works
Thank you in advance !
Try putting in the link, but without the http(s)://www bit at the beginning
Oh and it's not at all a silly question.
Was it this one?

Done, and yeah that's the one.
OK, there are two issues.
Service Provider Lock
Region Lock
As this is from Amazon then it should be Service Provider unlocked.
However to stop what are known as 'Grey Imports' where a unit is destined for say the Hong Kong market, to stop it being then re-exported to say the UK they require a HK sim to be installed first (which is why if you but a new unit from Hong Kong it's usually been opened and a sim put in it so that it performs it's initial region check) this then allows you to subsequently install any sim, as long as the first sim is from a matching region.
In this instance I would guess that the unit Amazon are selling are probably region locked to Europe (I'm not certain though obviously), which means the first sim you installed would have to be a euro sim and you would have to do it in Europe for the sim to validate live and disable the region lock.
A potential way around this would be buy a used unit off ebay where the Region Lock has already been deactivated.
Hope the above makes sense, if you need further help and don't want to do it in the thread you could PM me.
Update: I got the tablet from Amazon UK and it worked just fine in Egypt, (I just popped in my Egyptian sim card and turned on the device
I am glad it works well for you.
I am wondering if it will work in the US if I get it from Amazon.uk. T-Mobile only carries the 128gb one; I need the 256gb one.
