This or the tab s 8.4? - Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

I'm deciding between these 2 tablets at the moment and that display on the Galaxy is really attracting but I can't stand exynos SOCs, I had a note 3 with one and it was horrible. And even if I bought the snapdragon version it's still an ancient 800.
How is this tablet? Any flaws? Can it really handle water? I've heard a lot of bad stories with the z3 phone dieing after going underwater.
And most importantly, can you flash cm on it?

i had tab s and this tablet. and i love this this tablet more than tab s.and is the longest i have gone without root or cm.
its lighter, faster and more responsive on stock rom compared the tab s.
more importantly, root for this baby was recently acheived without losing warranty, that keans cm goodness and all.
samdung's tab s 8inch is using exynos with another chip for lte.lack of cm roms as well as losing warranty thanks to knox.
i recomend getting this baby as the only thing u miss will be the screen but the rest of the goodies more than makes up for it!

I had the same shortlist - but my main priority was battery life and much googling suggested that whilst the TabS has good battery life, the Z3 is much better. This appears to be true - I finally charged my Z3 today - 11 days after the last charge!
After handling both Z3 and Tab S instore, I decided to go with the Z3.
I did prefer the screen on the Tab S - much more vibrant colours etc - but the Z3 screen is plenty good in itself.
Also, I preferred the look of the Black Z3 over the white and bronze Tab S.
Finally, I have the Z1 Compact phone and like the magnetic charge port etc.
So, mostly the battery life - but the above points made the Z3 my 1st choice.

Hello,
I had the galaxy tab S 8.4 for around 2 months, then mooved to the Xperia. Some elements to consider:
- The S 8.4 has a slighty bigger screen and also... physical back and home button (thus no need for virtual buttons taking screen place)
- The S 8.4 has better accessories in my opinion (the physical keyboard / case which is fantastic, I would love to see one like that for the Z3 compact)
- The S 8.4 has thinner screen border
Also:
- I had some problems with the 4G/LTE with my tab S... Now everything is ok with my Xperia (that's the main reason why I changed device)
For me battery life is great on both devices (maybe better on the Z3).

So I bought the tab s and tested it for 1 week, the performance is a joke. I wasn't aware that its using the same CPU as the exynos galaxy note 3. I have the note with snapdragon 800 and its flying, I can't believe they put such weak hardware in such a "high end" device. The screen was indeed very nice, but that huge resolution needs better hardware to handle it. Running GTA San Andreas at max settings was a pain, while my note 3 does pretty well at it.
I ordered this tablet and its arriving tomorrow. Will come back with impressions. But so far, I really think this will be better then the galaxy.

I used Tab S for a week or so, before I detected a hardware issue. I immediately returned it. But in that one week, I made up my mind to never ever buy a Samsung device. I purchased the xperia z3tc last week and have been aggresively using it since.
I am completely amazed by the lack of bloatware in this device. It has just the right amount Sony added features and apps which you can find useful or completely ignore. There are no unnecessary modifications to the Android as a platform which you can find annoying. The performance is very consistent. I have a Nexus 4 as my primary phone and enjoy the stock android experience. Although there is a Sony skin on xperia it does a good job of being non-interruptive. I just dont feel the compulsive need to root this device, because it fulfills my needs the way it is.
In short, Samsung's modification to Android make it unusable; stay away from it!

Is your Z3 much easier to read in the sunlight than your Tab S's were? I can use the Tab S in the direct sunlight but it is not really a comfortable experience. Some reviews say the Z3 is better. Have you found that to be true? Thanks!

This tablet is way better then the tab s, way better. Display is probably the only thing better on the galaxy, but the sony one is very good too. Build quality, battery life and especially performance, is miles ahead on the xperia.
The only problem with this device is that it's very confusing to root. I still haven't found a tutorial to backup the drm keys to be able to unlock the bootloader and flash twrp.
Its very annoying.
I rooted the tab s in 10 minutes, and already was running cm12 after an hour I owned it. The community on those forums is much larger and its a shame people dont realize how much better the sony product is.

A small demonstration of the battery performance:

Almost 4 hours of screen on time and still half of battery left. Considering that the capacity isn't very big I think this is pretty good. The tab s barely made it through 5h screen time on my usage. And I still haven't hactivated stamina mode yet.

Can I ask what version of Z3 tablet you are using? My battery life is far less stellar than this, without any games or other demanding usage. I'm on the SGP611 (16gb, no LTE ).
Thanks in advance

I love this thing!

Sorry if this post doesn't really add much but I have to say, I love this device! It is absolutely solid and almost as easy to hold as the n7 with build quality that puts it to shame!
I don't know how anyone can say this thing feels or is cheap feeling at all. The finish on this feels awesome and the device has zero flex in it. I even like the shape! iPad can go to hell. 10 hours of battery life for my usage, an amazing screen and it is faster than any high end android device I've had a chance to use. Samsung and Google hit this thing out of the park.
I really hope whenever my n4 comes in that it can hold up to the example set with the 10.
Only thing I'm worried about is how long I will have to wait for my screen and body protector to come in the mail. Some cases and the mag power connector need to get here fast too.
Anyone else here feel the same?

Mine has pretty bad light bleeding at the top right corner. Noticeable when the screen is dark. The back also creaks a little if I press it...
But I do love this tablet. Samsung makes beautiful devices. Loved the GTab 10.1 and now this. The screen is stunning. I compared viewing a high-res 24mp image (6000x4000) with an Asus TF Infinity and the difference is staggering o.o Don't believe people who say the screen isn't that much better than 1080p. It sure is, providing you have high-res sources.
can't wait to get mine this Wednesday

I love mine....I can't understand the neg reviews either. The screen is absolutely gorgeous!
My only probs are that we need more quality tablet apps, and I wish the battery was a bit higher capacity.
After owning the orig Verizon moto Xoom, the orig Transformer, and Nex 7... I have to say this is a joy to use

The negative reviews was basically Engadget and PCmag, the rest were positive but also mentioned the ipad 4 being superior. I have a few theories as to why this tablet is betting some hate despite the specifications and excellent Samsung manufacturing and design. I truly believe these theories to be quite accurate as well. The hate I believe stems from three camps. The Samsung haters(there are a lot including Engadget), the Infinity owners, and the ipad 3/4 owners.
The Samsung hater theory is self explanatory.
The Asus owners are basically trying to justify how crappy their tablet runs by emphasizing the few minor features that the infinity has over the Nexus 10.
The ipad 3/4 owners are the same as the infinity owners except their tablet runs great but they are still insecure and throw some hate at the Nexus 10 because they are jealous that their retina display got beat and how much thinner/lighther, less expensive, the Nexus 10 is. They also are hating on how cool it runs compared to the literally scorching ipad 3.
Basically player hating.
the screen is just beautiful and colors are not washed out like nexus 7.. didnt notice any light bleed, as long as I dont notice any bleed in my day to day use, I dont care if there is any.. I plan to use this to occasionally watch movies stored in my desktop.. for browsing or lugging around the house, nexus 7 will do..will wait for aokp build and root it..want to enjoy pure android a lil before I load custom rom..
Just got mine in...still setting it up but so far so good. The screen is absolutely amazing and the swipe keys work good as well. I can already say without a doubt that it does not suffer from the stuttering seen on the tf700. Love it love it love it

Same here. This is my first Android device, and I can honestly say I'm blown away by how much more open it is.
haven't put it down since pulling it out of the box on Friday. Screen is amazing and it runs flawlessly. The only reason I'm even going to root is install AdFree and have full access to Root Explorer, other than that I see no need to mess w/ custom Roms, it has all I want and need!

It is indeed a thing of great beauty. :victory:
This is the experience I was expecting when I bought my Prime last year. This runs circles around the Prime and I agree with Tomatoes8 on his N10 hate theories. Can't imagine the tablet experience being much better than this. Also, the boot time blew my mind compared to the Prime. I would imagine with updates etc that the N10 will only get better.

I'm looking at buying a HTC one x+

What are the pros and cons of this device. Thanks in advance!!!

This is my oppinion:
Pro's:
-Fast CPU
-Smooth System
-Games running excellent.
-Great audio quality.
-Brilliant Screen.
-Gorilla Glass
-64GB Storage
Con's:
-Camera.
-No slot for memory cards.
-Sometimes it gets more than hot.
-Loudspeaker quality.
Pros:
Fast CPU
Decent battery life (depending on usage, heavy LTE usage and you will only get about 8 hrs)
Solid build quality (best in the industry I think)
Great screen (you can see it even at the beach)
64 gb internal storage (who needs an external drive
LTE support
Easy to hold due to rubber like surface
Good GPS signal
Beats Audio works nicely
Cons:
HORRIBLE memory management
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
(I will go into detail about this. As with the oneX before this, this phone is completely neutered by HTC and their lack of ability to allow the phone to multitask. It simply does not do it. You can switch between 2 apps and sometimes 3 if they are small but to try to switch from say text messages and a game, forget it. Even 4 apps and this phone has to reload the instance of the 3rd or 4th. It makes using this phone a complete pain in the butt. I was using the hotels.com app and trying to compare prices with expedia in the web, switching back between text and the other two apps make the phone forget all 3 were running. It's and HTC "feature" that kills apps so the phone can supposedly run faster. Problem is, they have a wicked fast processor and they don't need to worry about this phone running fast. All it does is fast.
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Lack of support by HTC and ATT (I see this being a problem for this phone in the future. Especially with the HTC One being announced.
Ugly ATT logo on front (not a deal breaker)
No removable battery (again not a deal breaker for me, it makes the build quality better so thee is a tradeoff there)
Does not make pancakes but it can cook them, read HOT phone.
Pro/Con - Somewhere in-between
Camera (Pics either comes out really good, or really bad low light performance is ok. It seems like the photos are by the software see the low light performance or lack thereof below.

Overall it's a great phone with an awesome screen, good performance, a decent battery considering what sucking on it. Frankly due to the fact that it will probably NEVER see an official update with the announcement of the HTC One, I would hold off for the one or wait and find these when the price drops significantly.
Pros:
Big screen
Fast! Quad-core is no crap!
Camera's great (compared to my HTC desire)
Very fast shutter (and I mean 4 pic/second in 8MP)
Gorilla glass
Customisable if you have a custom ROM
Cons:
Battery life's bad, and can get so hot sometimes the temperature shames the crappy iPhones.
OTA! Big deal! HTC is the worst when it comes to updates.
Multitasking sucks
BLOATED
Asphalt 7 lags
I think that's all.... It's worth the price anyways.

First sorry for my bad english
I've just received my One X + this morning .And.......i had the big WAOUUUU effect! My latest smarphones was a Galaxy Note and a Galaxy S3 internationnal version with quadcore exynos. And i prefer the One x + so much!! Very smooth, the screen is awesome. The colours are true unlike on amoled hd :good: 64gb of storage for game.I tried Nova 3 , it runs perfect with all effects enabled, i tried Asphalt 7 and it's the same.I don't know why some peopple said that their One x + lag on gaming??I can't say anything about battery life because it's too soon!
Pro
Performance good...Better than s3
Screen perfect
Battery can last a day
Call quality good
Beats audio is superb
Cons
Support and update is not as good as galaxy and iPhone and nexus
Galaxy is 4.1.2
One x+ still 4.1.1 and still no sign for 4.1.2
Sometimes hot when you play too long
Htc sync manager sucks...the good things is can import iTunes music...
The bad outlook 2013 still not supported
The battery is not removable if after use extended time is hard to change by yourself..
Not popular in my country...is hard to buy from shop for accessories..galaxy s3 a lot...(this is depends where you live)..have to buy on net
Overall I like it..
If I can give score...89 /100

That's funny, I like the Camera. I feel the internal memory is more that enough(64gigs). Speaker works great for music, but on speaker phone is a little lacking. I haven't felt it get to hot. I don't really hardcore game on it though.
The two (relatively small) cons in my book:
1: No SD card. Even with 64 gig, it would be nice if it had a SDxC slot just for backups without having to wait until everything gets stored onto Dropbox.
2: The size... it is pretty large for a phone, almost a phablet. However, with four cores that do a lot of processing, it is understandable that a larger form factor is a must to dissipate heat.
Neither is a show-stopper.

Yeah, i just bought this phone one week ago and already got it yesterday (living in germany). I was not sure if it is a good idea to order a smartphone from china but i gave it a try because of the comments here. In addition to that, a friend of mine recommended this site to me. The phone looks nearly exact like the samsung galaxy s4 and its performance is amazing. The hardware is a bit slower than the s4 but it's still pretty fast. All i had to do was changing the language to german now i can use it as i did with my last smartphone. The only negative point so far is that on one side of the frame around the display, there's some space which should not be like that. I think im goin to put some glue there, then it'll be fine.I don't regret having bought this phone and can both recommend the store and the phone.
Ulefone P6+
I'm in the UK and have one too, got it just before new year (delivered within 4 days of ordering) as a replacement for Zopo ZP980 that smashed (rather easily I might add). P6+ is a much better fone albeit a lot bigger, 2 batteries supplied (2800mah) and 1 easily lasts me an entire day with light to moderate use including phone calls, messaging and some Appy Geek app surfing. Note style flip case with window that was also supplied is pretty good, it has hard plastic back, sides and corners that protect it to a degree although I have tested how much for obvious reasons. The fone gets a little warm when used for a while but nowhere near as hot as the ZP980 which felt like it was going to melt so heat dissipation is pretty good . Doesn't seem to have any updater software on it though so doubt if any firmware will be released for it. I haven't rooted it, primarily as there are no discussion threads other than this one so no development work done that I am aware of. I installed Apex launcher and the KitKat theme which looks and works pretty well but I'm sure a proper KitKat port would be better. If you want a big screen fone for less than £200 off contract, you cant go far wrong with this one, just wish someone would write a Rom for it. Hope this post helps anyone undecided about this particular dual sim Chinese fone.

Kit or Loli

What is better on the Alpha, kit Kat or Lolipop?
Sent from my ONE E1005 using Tapatalk
Lolipop
Speed and experience better on loli? I don't care for animation and eye candy just want a fluid experience.
Sent from my ONE E1005 using Tapatalk
Yes, speed and experience better on Loli but S-find a little bit slower and battery consume more.
I prefer Loli than Kitkat
Thanks, didnt know if I should update to loli since mine is on KK....will give it a try
If you do update to LP you can always Odin back to KK. As much as I do agree that the experience is better on LP, speed and the toned down colors is better on KK.
Thanks, I need to read up on Odin
Sent from my SM-G850M using Tapatalk
In G850A KK is far faster and better in performance and battery consumption
Seems like the alpha does not get alot of attention in dev nor really many posts in this forum.
I recently bought few phones and don't know which one to keep to replace my old 2013 moto x. I got galaxy alpha, oneplus x, and Z5 compact. To be honest none feel as good ergonomically as the moto x. The oneplus is nice, good screen and speed but a Lil big. The z5c is really nice but darn thing si hard to hold without a case. Just way too slippery. And loli on it not very fast in my opinion. Also gets pretty warm with light surfing. Not terribly hot but the hottest of the bunch. The alpha is good all around. Nice size, weight is awesome... So light! Speed seems good. My first time using Samsung, it's not as terrible as I thought would be. I switched to Nova prime and feels good. No SD card is a bummer but not deal breaker. It's also slippery but best grip of bunch without case. Screen is good but a bit yellow and not as sharp next to oneplus.
What do you all think, which would you keep?
Thanks.
Sent from my E5823 using Tapatalk
In this thread people tend to answer.... Alpha!
One must bear in mind that there isn't a perfect phone... for someone the screen is small and for others it's the best size, just to take one simple example.
One doesn't need to get approval from others, the phone must fit to one needs, it's simple as that. But, in addition, the Galaxy Alpha is a great all around machine: fast, light and slim, very good screen and camera, good looking design. The battery is enough: it runs in one day with intense use (wifi and some gaming, some calls and sms's) - for me, a phone battery should handle one or two entire days, but not one day and half as I prefer to charge it at home and not to carry the charger with me at work.
The Alpha has high rankings in almost all categories although it's not the fastest or the slimmest or with the best camera. It's a great deal because it is still possible to find at +- 300€. If you put together the specs and this price... it's a bargain!
P.S: you can change screen mode to photography, it is more color accurate (and less yellowish).
Great feedback, thanks. I've narrowed it down to alpha or oneplus x. The screen is much better on x but the alpha just feels good in hand and easy to use. They are both same price here in the states.
I ran benchmark tests and this are results. Am I reading correctly that alpha scores higher?
Battery on alpha could be better and I can't find the larger oem battery anywhere. Do they still sell in your country?

Exynos chipset(alpha) would score higher than Snapdragon(oneplus x).
Alpha exynos variants usually score around 50K in antutu,
but alpha snapdragon variant scores around 40K according to posts in this forum.

In this thread people tend to answer.... Alpha!

The Alpha has high rankings in almost all categories although it's not the fastest or the slimmest or with the best camera. It's a great deal because it is still possible to find at +- 300€. If you put together the specs and this price... it's a bargain!

Dont forget the sound quality!!!
The good implementation of wolfson chip makes it a HIGH-END flac player.

Replacing the P9000?

Hello,
so I need to ask: is there any good replacement for the P9000 at the moment? No one should know better than people on this forum I think
I was never that disappointed about the phone, sure GPS can be useless sometimes and the camera is not that great but that's not always the case and the rest is working fine.
It seems to me that there is no similar phone with the same specs at least in the same or similar price range (up to 400 €).
The reason why I'm asking is the issue that the P9000 is not able to dial emergency numbers with an SD card in use. It just ends the calls.
So when you need it the most it is of no help by not being able to perform the most simple task for a mobile phone.
I still like the phone. It has the right size (don't want a smaller - can't have a bigger one) and weight with great features (LTE bands, USB-C fast charge / Qi, NFT etc.).
Looking for alternatives there were always missing features or not the most trustworthy brands - just like Elephone lol.
For my own safety I will need a new phone soon if there is no other solution. So what's on the market right now that I should look for?

Like you, I moved from the P9000 too, similar reasons, great little phone with too many niggles - give to my son in the end and he dont mind it, he likes fiddling with rooting, custom roms n alike
I bought my mates 6 month old OnePlus 3T, (which I realize is a bit of a price jump if you bought new) which again I will give my son when my upgrade is due in around 3 months. (altho this is a great buy for the price I think atm brand new, after all its only kinda 7 months since it was released)
The problem is (or probably a bonus) there are so many "mid range" phones out there and dependent whether you looking at Chinese brands or more mainstream. If Chinese, maybe look at the Xiaomi mid-range, they seem to get pretty good reviews generally. Thing with Chinese brands some are rubbish and some really great (like Meizu, Huawei etc) and pretty hard to choose which to go for.
Although my next upgrade will be more kinda mainstream (prob Samsung, Huawei or maybe new OP5) I usually note down what I'm after on the smart phone and then check whats available at the price point I'm working on, then I usually check as many unbiased reviews I can and also scan the XDA user forums to see what actual user feedback is like.
Thanks,
I would have nothing against going mainstream with a phone.
The Oneplus 3T seems to be nice but is limited to 64GB and is a little bit too pricy, also no wireless charging.
A little research got me to the Aquarius X Pro. Also no wireless charging (I could live with) and has a smaller screen but overall it is bigger in size and heavier than the
Elephone!
Seems like the P9000 is a rare species with no evolution. Great size for a 5.5"
The Aquarius X Pro looks a nice looking phone, nice price too. btw, I know Geekbuying have a kinda flash 75 hour sale (got email this morning with few mobiles listed) maybe check em out
I was also starting to look around, still unsure. I like the look of the Huawei Mate 9 but the overall size puts me off a little ( I done have large hands) so it will look stupidly large when I good it.
just an edit
BTW I dropped my P9000 and it is now useless what a coincidence.
I log into Amazon and see, that I bought this phone exactly on the 26th of June. And that is the day I broke the screen in half

I wouldn't hesitate a second and buy another one for now 200€. But the dialer thing is a no go and GPS reception often depends on luck.
I'm thinking about Honor 8 now but the glass backside is made for a disaster and I don't know about the EMUI thing.
The BQ seems to be too new to get a price drop. Bad luck with my timing I think
The two features of the P9000 that you will find hard to match are wireless charging and overall size. I haven't come across another reasonably priced 5.5" phone that's as small overall as the P9000 and wireless charging is rare in budget phones. But if these features aren't too important to you then there a dozens of phones to chose from.
A good place to start is kimovil.com - you can select the features that you want and get a list of available devices and prices.
I just bought a Redmi 4X for my son - only 5" and 720p, but an absolute bargain at $125 (now).

Yes, I can live without wireless charging although I got all the hardware and new cars are coming out with this function so I don't see why they can't implement that into more phones.
Size is a bigger problem. Seems like I have to go with 5.2 or less to match the overall size of the P9000. Too bad Elephone is a ****ty company that doesn't seem to care about a phone once it is released.

I just switched from P9000 to Redmi Note 4, WITH LTE Band 20, this week. Main reason: small Screen crack. So far everything fine, I just miss wireless charging.
Good luck, Redmi should be a good choice.
I am going to get a BQ phone, giving a non-chinese brand a shot.
