Magnetic Charger - Xperia Z2 Accessories

I recently got the phone and loving it. My only serious concern is the cap I have to remove to charge it. I fear after doing this frequently I might break it.
Anyone know how durable this is?
I'm thinking of buying a magnetic cheaper for it but it's expensive. Anyone know a place where I can get it for cheap? I really don't want to ruin the phone

Not really expensive and working fine. Also very convenient, I do not use usb charging anymore With adapter it's possible to charge also phone with thicker glass screen protector on front side and vinyl one on the back.
Aliexpress magnetic dock

Nice find .. How long did it take for it to reach you sheet ordering?
Sent from my HUAWEI Y300-0100

Took a little bit longer to deliver to Europe due to Christmas holidays - order placed on 2014-11-19 and delivered on 2015-01-07. While I was waiting I have purchased also the original Sony dock in a local shop

Done some research, most reliable magnetic charger
After going through several different forums and looking for the right cable, I can totally recommend one.
It's not that cheap, costs about 15€, but totally worth the money.
Very strong magnet, not any jiggle moments. Charging time is good, no Problem at all.
Product's Name: Magnector X 202 (was sent to me from the UK)
If you need further information feel free to contact me.

Why does anyone need to spend that much when there is a much cheaper option available from China... All these expensive products are basically rebranded which also find from China

Sounds like a Solid product!
I've had a 5$ dock and 3$ cable from china an both charged really slow! so now let's try this ^^
i'd rather pay 15euros than 30 euros for the official one...

Sure Back skin - it includes also stickers for sides and front of the phone, but I did not use them. Front glass screen protector - there are many alternatives in similar price range, just search for "Z2 glass screen protector" on ebay or aliexpress.

If you're willing to pay half the price of the official one for a knock off, just purchase original product.. I have several different 3$ cables and also 5$ dock and all of them are charging at the same speed as original dock or usb cable (verified in battery monitor app). I don't really understand why should they charge slower.

I made few purchases on Aliexpress and also on Ebay, I would say that both sites are selling same products. I prefer Aliexpress due to product reviews and tracking number for shipments included by default.

Because the Cables inside are to thin or the magnetic port is crappy? I've tested a ripoff dock for 7$ and a charging cable for 3$ and both took way over 5hours to charge the phone from 0 to 100% !
Well i can absolutly reccomend the Magnector X Cable (which is originally for the Z1!) as it's the only one i've tested that does charge the phone from 0 to 100% in about 3 hours! Best 15$ i've spent on accessories so far.

I did not see the internal cabling, I assume that it's thin, but working at the same speed as original Sony product. My charging speed depends on USB charger and time is the same for original dock as for ripoff dock and cheap cable as well. The only difference I could observe is with 1000mAh vs. 1500mAh charger. Otherwise.. But of course your experience may vary.
Edit: no issues with magnetic port either, not sure what problems did you have, I have none.

Used the magnetic charging port for about 6 months then now my phone only charges upto 70% with the magnetic charging cable, ive replaced the cable 4 times still the same. Back to using the normal USB charger, my flap broke off once, bought a replacement from ebay for about £8, tested the phone, it's still waterproof. Should stick to charging the phone with the original charging cable as it doesn't cost much to replace the flap, probably the same amount as buying a magnetic charging cable or adapter.

Looking for a second AC adapter

I am having trouble finding another power cord for my Gtablet.
I want a second one as first cord is hooked to dock and if I need to charge the tablet while out, Id like to have one to keep in my backpack.
I read that you can get the MPA-630 adapter and its same thing.
But I've been searching and all I can find is the cheap knock-offs on ebay.
I have a universal plug with different tips and voltage settings and I plugged that into my g-tab but I noticed a strange noise coming from it, so I dont want to use that.
Not sure if these knock-off are going to be good to use or not.
What do you guys get?

out of stock.
But that site wants $10 to ship a ac adapter via US postal service.
Screw that site
electroniccrap was set up by one of the g tablet community here to source accessories for us. It is not his day job, he runs it in his spare time. I don't know the details of his expenses but I've had dealings with him since before he put the site up: Steve is a stand-up guy and he is not in it to price gouge anyone.
Many of these items were made just for us. They didn't exist before Steve got involved and most likely wouldn't exist at all if he had not started talking to manufacturers in China on our behalf.
If you don't like it, you are free to buy elsewhere - you can search in here and find Chinese distributors for the dock and probably the power supply.. and plenty of complaints about the shipping times / lack of info - but please don't trash a guy who's doing something good for our community.
What do you mean by cheap knockoffs?
There are some Malata ones on eBay, Malata is the OEM for the gTablet.

Steve doesn't have enough demand to be able to compete with the Chinese sellers and/or drop shippers (especially since merchants on aliexpress and ebay started to allow single item purchases).
IMHO the guy is just trying to break even + offer US residents the convenience of 2~5 days shipment, not to mention that he also needs to use traceable service to protect himself against possible paypal claims.
You might think that this isn't the proper way to do business ? perhaps, but he isn't here to do business, he is here to help, and not so long ago Steves was the ONLY source for GTab "custom" accessories in NA.
Any way, back to topic.
Here is a US ebay seller who sells the adapter for $15 shipped, lets hope pyro doesn't snag them all for his ebay store

Hey, thats a killer deal, I say go for it ... Although he doesn't say it specifically fits the gtablet.
The Gtablet requires a high powered adapter with a special tip and our replacement AC adapter works 100%
Most G Tablets use a 12V power cord, so please look on your original home power cord and make sure it does say 12V

As we all know by now, "looking" compatible is not the same as being compatible (like the Sansa cable "looking" like it would fit our docking port.)
Considering that is intended for a WD external hard drive, I would think the polarity would not be right. The MPA-630 is KNOWN to be compatible.

Thats why I was looking for confirmation, its 40% cheaper than the cheapest available option.
The power adapter is inherently different than a data port at the end of the day it all comes down to voltage (confirmed)/ampere (confirmed)/tip size (needs confirmation)/tip polarity (needs confirmation) and not the 54 differently assigned pins in the docking port.
By the way, MPA-630 isn't KNOWN to be compatible, MPA-630 is the OEM adapter that ships with the GTab

Since I live in another part of the world (Australia) I just went down to the local electronics store (Jaycar), with the original in hand and bought a generic plugpack that matches the specifications. Works ok, have never used the original supplied due to having the US plug.

Unfortunately, that is the risk we take buying from chinese companies.
I received mine and the problem is not that they don't fit, the problem is the idiots SHIPPED THE WRONG PART! I immediately emailed them (through ebay) and told them of their error.
Explain very clearly that you ordered an MPA-630 and they shipped you a ???? (whatever you got).
Here is what I told them (verbatim) and I got refunded that night. Please do not use the same exact wording or they will suspect shenanigans. Bad feedback causes them to have to pay a higher rate to eBay, so it is in their best interests to take care of problems. You play fair too though and once they refund, don't dog them in feedback. (I did find an American shipper for only a buck or so more.)
IT IS THE WRONG PART! You sent SDK-0605, which has the wrong connector and has only 3-foot cord as well. You listed the MPA-630, which is the correct part and has a 6-foot cord. That is what I ordered from you and that is what I need, nothing less.
What you sent me is not even similar.
Either refund my money today or I will file PayPal claim and leave you bad feedback! I do not have time to mess around and answer questions for days and I will not wait three or four more weeks to get a replacement from you.
Refund now please. Thank you.
It is not cost-effective for them to get you to return the wrong one (postage is more than cost of unit for them) so once they refund you (paypal, I hope) you can toss the mistake in the trash.
Just to add, again, this is the exact same adaptor that comes with the G-Tab.
This is the one that I purchased and it is working flawlessly. It is the exact same adaptor as the one that came with my gtab
http://cgi.ebay.com/Orignal-AC-Adap...0&hash=item563971f9f7&clk_rvr_id=244133430946
I received the replacement unit from a US seller and it is perfect, plugged in all day. No funny noises.
NOT the exact same model, but worked perfectly and has a slightly smaller "big" end that actually fits in my case.
Will update post tomorrow with exact part number, may be a good cheaper alternative.

Obviously the cheaper option to the original Sony EC21. (I wonder how much it is, and where u can get it)
I don't need the dock, but still want the EC21. Is it on sale anywhere? I guess the the adapter (Link above) will do the same job. Just fed up of worrying about the usb cover breaking/falling off, or not being closed properly to give it water proof ability, not to mention the hassle of opening and closing it all the time...
And I wonder how safe the thing is... With all the electrocution deaths and injuries u hear from 3rd party products....
EDIT and UPDATE
I think this adapter would be useful for all Z Ultra owners (and future Sony Mobile owners, including Z1) since it allows our (multiple) micro-USB cables to become a magnet connector charger at reasonable prices.
If anyone who can read/speak Chinese, and happens to visit Taobao website to find out further information, please leave a reply.
Meanwhile, the next best thing is this, which people have been talking about further down the post.
A USB cable with magnetic connector (similar to EC21, which I cannot find sold separately)
It comes with charger unit
available at http://dx-box.com/magnetic-charging-cable-for-xperia-z-ultra-xl39h.html
I am soon to get mine. On its way, should arrive within the next few days.
Since this is the only website where I can find this on sale, as well as the fact that EC21 cannot be attained on its own, plus the fact that DK30 is in short supply with high prices, I felt this could be useful for many people like myself.
If you find a similar product, or an alternative to what has been shown here, please comment.
Thanks

Oh well nice just to know such things exist. Lets hope we actually come across somewhere to buy it eventually.
I wanted to order the magnetic connector but I don't want to register on dx-box as it's weird they are the ONLY ONE supplier in the WHOLE WORLD.
I searched long and thorough but no-one seems to make/sell these anywhere.
I also searched for the image the OP posted but got no results at all. THAT would be a great thing and looks like it could cost no more than a couple of dollars/euros/whatever currency you have, same as the old miniUSB->microUSB converters.
I may buy like a dozen of them to leave literally everywhere I go, as microUSB cables are everywhere nowadays.
Someone could search trough singaporean forums...

what the hell, I can't have the phone for another month, and I'm not even sure if I will eventually buy one (will see Honami/Note 3 before throwing my money at them), but I bought a magnetic cable too, just to be on the safe side.
Not that 25 USD are the right price though, but if they'll continue to sell it exclusively I guess that's the price to pay...
just FYI, I managed to find the thread in which the first image was originally posted (Here), and they mention Taobao as the shop where you can preorder it.
I tried to search within the shop in english and chinese (with help from Google Translate obviously as I don't speak anything near chinese), but all it comes up with "Xperia Z Ultra Magnetic Charger/adapter" is the same cable we bought from DX.
Anybody willing to try and (possibly) succeed? :fingers-crossed:

Sony EC21
Hi!
Today I've received my DK30 dock, and found out that this accessory is FAR from perfect. So I disassembled it and found out that it's actually just a simple plastic box, holding a standard Sony EC21 magnetic cable.
So if anyone is not satisfied with horizontal dock that refuses to work even with the thinnest 3rd party TPU cases, it is a matter of one minute to remove the EC21 cable from the dock & use ZU with that cable & any appropriate stand.
I actually use it with Nokia's QI vertical charger left from my previous HTC Droid DNA, and it looks like perfect companion for Z Ultra (although, of course, the Qi functionality is unavailable).
WBR, Draco.

Sorry to hear that the case you are using is not compatible with the adapter that comes with DK-30 (that allows it to dock with cover on).
Maybe, now that your EC21 is out of the dock, you can still use the dock as a stand, but this time with EC 21 being connected when the phone is laid down on the other side?(with connection now on top)... I know, t defeats the original design, but surely better than not using or throwing it away?
I was thinking about DK30, but ultimately backed away because of
1) High price for what it seems,
2) Lack of availability (thus the premium slapped on it at the moment) and..
3) the fact that I could barely get detailed pictures of what it actually is... I was more interested in the EC21 cable, which seems not available at the moment as a stand-alone product. Dock would have been a bonus which I would use only occasionally...I needed the EC21 cable (usb-magnetic connecter). I wonder if Sony plans to release EC 21 only? I hate opening that flap for micro usb access!!

As above comment forced me to buy from DB box, I am still waiting for mine. Did you get yours? Has anyone?
Anyone care to do a quick report/review?
The charger seems to be a HP unit. What do you think? Authentic HP product that was utilized as cheap charger after some kind of redundancy/liquidation? Or do you think it is yet another copy product?
I am not the most ethical person, so frankly I don't care that much if it is copy/knock-off. What I do care about is the safety, after hearing multiple stories about injuries and even deaths due to unsafe knock-off chargers.
What do Y'all think?

[Review] TechMatte Qi Compatible Wireless Receiver

[Review] TechMatte Qi Compatible Wireless Receiver
Reposted since the original post disappeared. Moderator (Naddict) said it may have been a system issue last night.
I was asked to review the TechMatte Qi Wireless Receiver. I already had one of the "blue" Qi receivers that I got off of eBay and have been using for close to a week. There is nothing wrong with the "Blue" Receiver, but this was an opportunity to look at a different version of receiver. There are also different versions of Blue receivers which I have not tried as well as other white and black receivers.
This is a review about a specific Sellers product, what they are selling, what it costs, how it compared and installed and my opinion of it.
The package arrived via First Class mail and inside was a small cardboard package.

Inside the package was three items:
The Qi Reciever
A Thank You Card with warranty and return policies on it
Instruction Card
The Reciever
Pics of the Receiver both front and back.
Compared to the "Blue" Version
Note that my "blue" version only has 2 connectors. I've now seen others which have 3. The TechMatte receiver has 3 and they are spaced properly where the "Blue" receiver was a bit too close.
In the picture, the arrow on the "Blue" receiver image shows that I had trimmed the edge of the receiver. I also had removed the blue sticker on the cover side of the receiver in an attempt to make it thinner.
The arrows on the white/black receiver show where the tape that holds the receiver in place is, and the 3 connectors which are used to connect to the phone.
The advantage to have 3 connectors is that it eliminates any guessing which connectors to use.
The "Blue" Receiver installed in the phone
Note that I had removed the blue sticker on the cover side of the receiver to make it "thinner". I had also trimmed it a bit.
The TechMatte Receiver Installed in the phone
The 3 connectors were properly spaced on this receiver unlike the "blue" one that I had been using. The "Blue" had only 2 connectors and they were too closely spaced making the connection iffy.
No trimming or adjustments were needed.
The unit sits very flat, appeared to be wide to me, but when I put the cover on there was no bulge at all.
Images with cover on
Didn't bother with any images since I couldn't even tell there was a receiver in the phone. As a result, using the case I use (Spigen Bounce) there was no issue either.
Performance
This receiver worked the first time I installed it. No re-positioning or re-seating necessary. I have a Nokia DT-900 pad at the house and it links and charges pretty much as soon as you place the phone on the pad even with the Bounce case.
Early in the morning when I tried it, the phone was pretty much already fully charged. It looked like the charge rate was lower than I expected. However later in the morning when I did some real looking and compared between Battery Charger and the Galaxy Battery Charge apps, all I have seen is a solid 640mAh when charging.
While the phone gets warm while charging as expected, it doesn't get overly hot. I will do a real heat test between the two when I get the "Blue" receiver to a co-working. Will use a infrared heat detector to see what the temps are between the two phones in the same configuration. I suspect they will be similar if not the same.
NFC Usage
One issue that came up while testing was whether or not the receiver would effect the usage of the NFC on the phone. I had not used NFC on the phone yet and really didn't have anything to test it with on hand. Will update when I get some tags to test.
**UPDATE**
I received some NFC tags today to test this part that I was originally not able to test. The receiver does make a pretty big difference in how well the phone can see the tags. Without it, they are read very easily and quickly without really having to pay much attention where you are tapping (if you even have to touch). With the receiver, you have to actually touch, and move it around a bit to be seen. If you need to or want to use NFC on a regular basis, you most likely need to look at a different receiver for your note 3.
Specifications:
Size: 0.6mm
Weight: 0.6 oz (17g)
Charging voltage: 5V
Charging current: 600mA
Charging frequency: 100 - 200Khz
Wireless distance: 5mm
Energy conversion: more than 72%
Cost/Website etc...
TechMatte did not povide any sales info with the package. But finding where they sell it was easy.
URL: See Update below
**UPDATE** They sent me this URL as the location for purchase since the other one will apparently be discontinued soon.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GMRXD9U
Price: $12.99
Shipping: $1.99 (assumed First Class Mail) or expedited for $4.99 (Assumed priority Mail). Note that this shipped from PA and it took only 2 days to get to the house in Arizona via regular First Class Mail. The purchase of 2 or more would qualify for free shipping if you needed more than one.
Looking at the new website link it includes Free Shipping which is assumed to be by First Class mail. This should get to most in the Continental US in 2 days or so.
The unit is shipped from the US, so in many cases it will get delivered much quicker than the same types of units sold on eBay and shipped from China. The unit I got was shipped from PA and got to AZ in 2 days via First Class Mail in a white padded envelope.
Warranty:
30-Day Money Back Guarantee
12 Month Replacement Warranty
They have local support via a website, email and have a link for Amazon reviews to post your review.
Documentation:
A welcome sight.... The package included a Thanks card and an Instruction sheet though that really wasn't needed:
My Impressions
Showed quick shipping (from PA to AZ in 2 days)
Packing was well done and complete
Included documentation
Easy to install, Pin spacing was correct and package is flat.
No perceptible bulge so it works with all cases.
Worked the first time with no adjustments
A bit higher priced than others, but again, quick shipping and local support
Uses an Amazon shopping cart system with reviews.
Performance matched previously used products.
Not Ebay with shipping from China 7-10 day shipping.
No recommended if you need or want to use NFC.
Would most likely look this direction if I needed more of them and would recommend them to others.
As for cost... hmm.. $700 phone, $15 with shipping Qi receiver... patience in shipping time (I want it now mentality) ... fine with me.
But I can get it cheaper in China
Good for you. Seriously, that is not relevant. Most people can't hitch a ride to China to buy products at wholesale.
eBay may be a choice as well, but you most likely are not going to get it in 2 days, and you many times don't know exactly which version they are selling. Do the eBay sellers offer 12 month replacement? Most likely not.
Disclosure
I was asked to review this product. I already had a working solution but agreed to do so. They sent the product free of charge to allow for the review but that had nothing to do with my opinion of what I got, how it was packaged, how it installed for functioned. I am not associated with TechMatte Inc and have no interest in their company. I was certainly not obligated to provide a "good" review.
Good review, I missed the qi charging from my nexus 4, when I got my note 2, now that I have the note 3, looks like a viable option again.

Updated original review with a video of someone else using what appears to be the same receiver. They are showing NFC issues with it on. I still don't have the NFC tags yet so have not been able to test.
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfGeL4Gfw-w&t=4m47s
I can confirm that NFC does NOT work with the TechMatte Qi receiver. I also have the white Qi receiver from eBay, and NFC works perfectly with it in my phone. Both Qi receivers add little to no bulge whatsoever, and they both charge my Note 3 at 640mah while sitting on my Nokia DT900. If NFC doesn't matter to you, then I'd recommend the TechMatte Qi receiver. While neither receivers add a bulge to the battery door. The TechMatte Qi receiver is slightly wider, and has an extra coil or just has the coil spread apart wider, which allows you to set the your phone down on to the Qi charger without having to pay attention to be sure that it's charging. The TechMatte Qi receiver charges my Note 3 no matter where I set it on my Qi charger. With the eBay Qi receiver, I have to be more careful with where I set my phone down on to the Qi charger.

Yes it does.
Sorry, thought I said that in my previous post. I edited my previous post to add that it does work just fine.

Thanks for doing this revew krelvinaz, I just ordered one of these based on it being ultra-thin, charges at 640mA and even though it's shown to interfere with NFC, that's irrelevant to me.
You can buy it through their site and pay the shipping, or buy it from Amazon (they're still the seller) and get free shipping (I just ordered it through Amazon for $12.99, no tax and free shipping):
TechMatte Qi Receiver
Update on Their Sales page
TechMatte sent me a new sales link for their product. The one originally in the review is apparently going to be shutdown.
The New Link is on Amazon itself:

Price: $12.99
Shipping: FREE
It now shows free shipping as well. Assume the shipping is via First Class mail which is how they sent mine which means most people in the Continental US should get it in about 2-3 days.
Any idea if this receiver will continue to charge the battery, if used with the Samsung S-View case?

I would imagine that the pad would cover the pin area of where the s-view cover pin should be touching, which would defeat the whole purpose of having the S-view case in the first place.
I know you mentioned no bulge, but that's with a case, which will hide any bulge.
How does it look w/o a case?
I have the same blue qi receiver that you have which I got from ebay also but with the 3 prong.

This might actually work. Unlike many of the Qi receiver I've seen, this one has contacts on the outside of the receiver where the contacts are. I think they pass through the contact signals. I would have to put a meter on them to know are not though.
This is the back of the receiver (facing the cover):

Actually what I said was that I couldn't see that there was a receiver in the phone after I put the back on. That is why I didn't post any pictures as you couldn't tell the difference between the before and after picture. They looked the same.
The result was it would also not have any effect of using any case you could normally use.
Awesome review! Thanks...now I have something for my wife to give me for Christmas!
I received some NFC tags in this afternoon and gave them a try.
With the TechMatte Receiver, they do work, but the receiver is causing them to be harder to read.
I removed it to see what it would be like without it completely (never really used NFC tags before) and found they worked a lot better without it.
I have a different Receiver coming in which has NFC built in and will post info on what I find on it. Will be in a different post as it is not related to TechMatte's product.
Just a quick note that I got mine today and installed without a hassle!...I even accidentally left the note running when I putting the receiver on!
I've got the Nokia DT900 charger as well and it works as expected. And according to the charge rate app, it's charging at 640mA as well.
You do have to apply just a tiny bit of extra force to snap the back cover back on around where the receiver is...But it's an absolutely slight amount of pressure and I'd challenge anyone to detect any "bulge" between a note3 with and without this receiver.
I also tried putting a couple of mail catalogs (total thickness of about 1/4inch) between the charger and phone and it still charged...Which is great, it shouldn't be a problem to put just about any case on it and still retain the wireless charging capability.
So I could use this charger with pretty much any case that I want? I totally want to do this since I hate plugging/unplugging wires.
All I would have to do then is find a mat that supports Qi correct?
Yes, just keep in mind this its a slower charge than using the AC charger that comes with the phone. 1800mAh > 640mAh. Shook it its good for keeping you device charged, but won't charge it really fast like the AC one.
I am using two right now (pads) one on my office desk at work, and one by my lazyboy chair in the living room.
When I am sleeping, which may be a series of naps, I use a full AC charger, 1 to make sure when I get up it is fullly charged, 2 I don't play with my phone when I am trying to sleep, so no point using a pad there.

Sounds good. Next week I will be ordering a bunch of accessories for my N900 so that they are at the house when I arrive back stateside and I am looking for the Qi setup.
Are all of these wireless chargers in the 640mAh range? I don't think that it will bother me so much as I am in the same boat as you. I usually have the cord at the side of the bed and would like to have one of these in the family room where I spend most of my time.

What is a great qi charging pad?

Hey guys since the N6 is qi compatible and i also have the moto 360, want to know from anyone with experience of owning or playing with one, what is a great qi charging pad.
I use the Nokia DT-900 for my G2 and N7. It works really well.

I've been using the TYLT VU for a year with my N5, it is the single greatest smartphone accessory I've ever purchased. It's more expensive than most other QI charging pads, but it's worth every penny.
http://www.tylt.com/vu/
The tylt is nice but I wonder how fast it will charge the nexus or should I wait to see if someone or motorola brings out a wireless charger aimed at rapid charging, if not then the tylt is top on the list.
The Tylt has been known to have some overheating issues in the past. They may have been fixed, and not everyone experiences it, but I'd be careful there. I have the DT-910, which is the upright version of the DT-900, and it's fantastic. I'm not sure it will work with the much taller N6 though. There's always the Nexus Charger, of course, or the Samsung charger.
I also have a Tylt VU charger that I use with my Nexus 4 (first batch model) which considering how the Qi coil was with the first batch models its quite an achievement that the VU works so well with my phone!
Also considering that the VU holds the device at an angle and not on a flat surface, it might be able to handle the Nexus 6 better with its curved back compared to most other chargers which might prove troublesome.
I bought an LG WCP-300 (Amazon Link) back when I got my Nexus 4 and have been using it with my N5 as well. It works fairly well with the N5, so I hope that it works OK with the Nexus 6. The only thing I've noticed with the N5 is that the phone covers the charging LED on the charger, so if I move the phone in the middle of the night it's hard to see when the LED starts blinking again. This is only going to get worse with the N6 due to the size.

+1 for the WCP. I bought it awhile back and it works fine with the N4. You should be able to grab it a lil cheaper than the link though
The Anker Ultra-Slim Qi-Enabled Wireless Charging Pad looks promising.
Great price and low-profile.

I've had the TYLT VU since it came out and not once have I had an overheating issue, but I do know that some people did. It was caused by misalignment of the coils based on the way people were placing their Nexus 5's on the charger. I think if you slid the phone down on it you were at risk, but if you placed the bottom of the phone on it first and tilted it back into place, you were safe. I know TYLT was aware of it because they put out an updated guide. I'm also fairly certain they altered the design a bit to mitigate the issue.

An extra thick case will cause some issues. My G3 with a Supcase Premium Hybrid on it works, but I have to be more careful about positioning than I do without it, or with a thinner one like a TPU. Anything with metal should be avoided; they will both interfere with the charge plate, and possibly cause heat issues - the small metal plate I had in my Nexus 5 for my magnetic car mount would get very warm when on the charger - to be safe I pulled the phone out of the TPU case when I charged it at night.
As far as the Tylt Vu, I love mine. I have had no issues with the charger itself overheating, but it has had some issues with various configurations. My first Qi device was a Nokia 930, and it got VERY warm while charging - to the point where it would sometimes overheat and reboot in the middle of the night. I replaced it with a Nexus 5, and other than what I stated above, it worked perfectly with no heat problems. My current LG G3 works without issues as well, although positioning can get a little trickier because the receive coil is so low down on the back of the phone; I have to make sure I push the bottom against the charger base when I set it on it at night, or it will occasionally send a "low charge" message and wake up the screen - especially with the case on the device.
I will note the the Tylt Vu has a clone called the Itien A6 that is much cheaper, and from all accounts works as well as its more expensive cousin. If the Tylt version is too expensive for you, you may want to look in that direction.

My concern with the Tylt (and in fact all the QI chargers) is that the back of the Nexus 6 is curved. Will it rest naturally so that the coil is against the pad? Or will it need a specially shaped charging pad to ensure that it works.

The charge coils work within a CM or so of each other, so the curve should not be an issue. It may exasperate the thick case issue mentioned above, but it should be OK for the most part. The curve will be more of an issue for things like magnetic car mounts.

The further the coils are from the phone, (whether because of curved back or case), the more resistance, the more heat, the more battery wear. It is the physics of energy. No way around it. Even Qi with a straight back and no case will offer more resistance/heat/battery wear than corded charging.

Wow, that thing is seriously overpriced for a single coil charger (at regular price, it's about right at $20).

Magnetic cables

Anyone ever try any of these magnetic adapters? They seem to be from some sort of generic company that makes them, a few reviews say that the magnet is weak, but I don't plan on picking up the device after putting it away to charge:
http://www.amazon.ca/kwmobile®-Magn...=UTF8&qid=1428346979&sr=8-98&keywords=sony+z3
http://www.amazon.ca/kwmobile®-Angl...8&qid=1428348293&sr=1-12&keywords=kwmobile+z3
I actually ordered some of these on Ebay. They work like a charm. Much better than opening the MicroUSB cover every time I need to charge.
The magnet is okay, not really strong, but strong enough to keep the cable connected at night when I'm charging the phone.
I used one with a strong magnet (and still use it) and it made the magnet port come out the phone. I used epoxy glue as the phone was bought overseas (D6633).
This is to warn you about using cables with strong magnets.
I've used both the Magnector X & Magnector X2 (found in link below)
http://www.amazon.ca/Magnector-Impr..._sbs_ce_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=04WK9PY62G464C2VNVT8
The Magnector X felt really loose on the phone and fell off easily, I would however recommend the X2, it has a nice fit and you can use long USB cables with it so you can still use it will plugged in.

@Incanity, Thanks. I think I'm going to order the one in the first link, the one that has cable extension. It seems like it would provide some good slack so that the cable/magnet will sit nicely when charging.
@kar200, that's exactly what I'm afraid of. I think I saw either your post or someone else complaining about the same thing.
Thanks for your input guys!

The Magnector X felt really loose on the phone and fell off easily, I would however recommend the X2, it has a nice fit and you can use long USB cables with it so you can still use it will plugged in.

I'm also using the X2 version of the Magnector cable. It fits perfectly, and is very easy to snap. It may be not the cheapest one, but if you don't want to experiment, then i think is the cable to go.
X2 it's great, i had the dock but with case it's not fitting.

But i believe its still over priced
They're not so handy, I dont use mine much.
Just received my Magtron X2 adapter... With a nice surprise. Lol. I scored 2 for the price of one

Just got mine, well I got 2, one for myself and another for my wife. Mine works great loving the fact that I don't have to keep opening the flap, on my wife's phone though she needs to tilt it frontwards abit to get it to charge, did singer tests and confirmed that it was hey device that had a faulty magnetic charger point
^ I had the same with mine.... it was originally working ok, but now I find that Iaying the phone screen up flat, I have to "hook" the cable over the bottom left corner of the phone to get the mag charger to charge.
At first I thought it was my cheap chinese cable.. but after buying 3 and looking it up on the interwebs, apparently the glue they use for the mag charger port isn't too good... if I use my fingernails against one of the metal connector I can actually wiggle the port visibly.
I've tried to get it sent back for repairs via my service provider (Telstra in Australia) but they ended up changing my screen (WTF?) and asking me send in the cable with it but I have a feeling they won't honour the warranty as it's not official sony mag cable. Not sure if i should go to Sony directly or back via my service provider.....
I bought once a very cheap chinese one but it worked very bad.
I'll like to try the X2
I also tried the magnetor x. It took awhile for it to finally connect to the magnet and even then it was very weak. And it didn't charge the phone at all. Could have been a faulty product though.

Yes, I think there must be a design flaw with the magnetic charging points in the Z3 where they aren't very durable. Mine won't charge on either one of these cheap adapters nor with the official Sony dock.
Just to chime in. Yesterday I got a WSKEN magnetic charging cable off eBay. And I have to say it works great! The magnet is strong enough to keep it attached to the phone, but not too strong to rip the phone's innards out. If you plan to use your phone while it's charging with the cable, it will fall out a lot. So on that point USB charging is still your best bet.
But for popping it on the phone and leaving it on your desk, it's just excellent.
I bought mine here. It came pretty quickly and it worked right out of the box. And the price seems very decent.

thanks for the tip, buying two right now. My old wsken alu broke for some reason. The magnector looks solid, but that pricy is outrages. This seems to hit the sweet spot.

Just to let you know: my WSKEN still works like new, absolutely no problems with charging.

hey, i just got this wsken charger because it just looks amazing to me for a third party magnetic charger. but now I'm kinda worried because i read those threads and posts on xda and xperia care, they said that their magnetic charging port of the phone. i use the same charger as you, but the magnet on the charger keeps falling apart, my old magnector that i used before this one had no problems with this and it holds the phone stronger too, without the small piece of magnet falling apart like the wsken. so is it the phone's magnet that is strong, or should i also worry about my phone's port to break apart?
Now I'm worried since this is an expensive phone that I want to keep for long I mean sony's service centre is the worst thing that i could imagine in this world. so i want their devices but avoid their service centre lol
and is there a way to carefully disconnect the charger so the phone's magnet couldn't loose or break apart from the phone? or just disconnect it the normal way? tell me how you did it lol
The magnet on the WSKEN is not strong enough to damage or in any way remove parts from the phone or in any other way damage it. When you want to disconnect the charger, you simply pull it off the phone.
EDIT: the magnet is in the charger, not the phone.
EDIT2: if your charger is falling apart, return it and ask for a new one.
