S3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys,so after i bricked my phone i had to switch my motherboard in a repair store,so after repair,my S3 that was a i747,is now a gt-9300,so i have some questions, since its now a gt-9300 does my ram decrease since the i747 is 2GB an the GT-9300 is only one?does the GT-9300 have official 4.4 update?

Yes, it has 1GB of RAM. No, there is no official update to 4.4. However, you can easily get it with either a port posted here, or using an AOSP ROM. You can even put 5.0.2 on it if you want.

thank you, sorry, kinda of a noob question but, when i flash the 5.0.2 witch is lollipop, will it have the exact same interface as the official, and by flashing a rom,is there a chance of bricking my device?

No AOSP won't be even remotely similar and yes, anything you flash can brick it if you don't understand what you are doing.

Yes, they are similar because they are based on sammy roms with the touchwiz ui.
The article you posted is about arter's back-to-n00t rom which you can find here. I myself use it for 7 weeks now and it works flawlessly for me.

hi,i have read the thread but i saw something that worried me,after the thread about the rom,he wrote, known issues:SMS delivery reports are not working
Cannot charge while the phone is off
The sms thing doesnt realy bother me,but, cannot charge while the phone is off, does that mean that if your phones battery runs out and turns it self off your phone is dead?or did he already fixed that?

No, that just means that if you turn off your phone and plug a charger in it will boot up automatically while charging. That's all.
I'm not sure if it is fixed in the stock kernel, but it sure is in Boeffla kernel. I would suggest you use that.
For issues concerning SMS delivery, bluetooth or camera there are fixes available in the back-to-n00t thread. Just try it out. In any case read the threads in my sig carefully.

I sent the phone back to China and I am waiting for a new unit.
I have this phone but cannot find anything on how to root it, anyone know how ?
Or if there is a update as it is running 4.1.2 ?
Thanks in advance

yes I would also be very interested, I just got my Newman nm890 android 4.1.2 and it has difficulty picking up a cell signal where my other cell phone gets a couple of bars. I am having difficulty with rooting it. I have been waiting for the 4.2 to be available but different from the sales ad, it does not seem to be readily coming. The previous reovery.img with the QR is it 4.1.2 or 4.2.1. It looks like the nm890 is popular.

I'm trying to extend my battery life. I read fast dormancy can extend my battery life significantly, but it depends on my device and mobile network provider.
Should i remove it? any one has tried it and can give me some feedback?

Create your own thread. it is a compkletely different problem. also, it has been answered in cm10.1's thread. in the last few pages, i think @palmbeach05 has covered this and other issues.
As for OP: AFAIK, fastdormancy comes preinstalled, depends upon your carrier and it automatically start to work whenever it detects your carrier supports it. but in my experience, i got better results removing it than wit it enablesd maybe due to the alpha nature of the kernel

All kernels nowadays are 3.1.10. This is, has been, and will be until officially upgraded, an Alpha stage kernel. This means that there are major bugs present. Are there kernels out there that are stable enough at this stage? Yes. Most are within the individual ROM threads, others are in krystian's dropbox.
There are 2 versions of ICS that are popular amongst A4G users, AtrICS v 2.0 and CM9. Which one are you trying to use?

ALWAYS make a backup prior to any test modifications. That way if removing fastdormancy makes things worse for you, you have something to fall back on without having to go through the hassle of reflashing the entire ROM.

I used it for a while, then I got back to AtrICS. As @palmbeach05 said, always do a nandroid backup before messing with anything system related.

Ok and you're experiencing a problem everyone has had or still has. Stop complaining or start developing a fix. Can't develop? Don't complain. Simple as that. Besides that, I mentioned it before, but I will reiterate the point again. THE 3.1.10 KERNEL IS AN ALPHA STAGE KERNEL. ALL ROMS RUNNING A 3.1.10 KERNEL BECOME ALPHA STAGE ROMS AS WELL. ALL LOWER REVISION KERNELS ON ANY 4.0 AND UP ROM WILL PROVIDE ISSUES AS WELL. This is pretty much a deal with what we, the devs of xda, can provide to you and other users, or move onto a new ROM or a new device.

[Q] Alternative to CyanogenMod 11

I've been running CyanogenMod 11 for about a month now. I like it a lot, however there are instabilities. Youtube cannot play videos at all, for example; Snapchat totally fails to work; and one or two apps I've tried to install wouldn't even open. Occasionally a program will crash with a "Such-and such service has stopped" error notice.
Can anyone suggest a more stable ROM? I'm a newbie to flashing, I'm not experienced or interested in trying out different ROMs. I'm not a power user, I just want a stable, reliable ROM. Is cm11 known to have the issues I'm experiencing? Can anyone suggest an alternative?
Thanks.

Since cm-11.0 for this device is not in nightlies major bugs should be expected. Sorry, I don't have a suggestion, but I have a question. Does the headphone jack work on cm11?

Yes, the headphone jack works fine.
I've made the decision to return to the official Samsung ROM, so if anybody could point me in the direction of a safe, reliable download for that I'd be very grateful.

Nightly is the first "Official" status of a device from CM. If the device is very stable, with all system working properly and with minimal buggy behaviors CM begins building the ROM officially as a "Nightly" assuming the dev is following best practices etc.

I don't think that anyone has the stock rom for the Mega(s) yet, waiting patiently for the guys upstairs to crack the bootloader.
however you might try to restore with Kies.

You are not right, I for instance have stock ROM on my Mega and I am quite satisfied... Ohhh, maybe I'm a little lying... :silly: it is MegaFireMj2V5 from megalomanic14 which is based upon a stock ROM but is greatly improved - if you are looking for alternative to stock or CM11 rom's it's worth a shot.
As for return to stock ROM - be careful to choose right version: all new firmware (beginning from CNA1) are 'enhanced' with new bootloader and Samsung KIES which is new security system. If you upgrade your Mega by Kies or by Odin with newest firmware you will be lacked possibility to downgrade AND every attempt to root or flash custom recovery will result in tipping flashing counter without any possibility to clear it. So be extremely cautious if you want to mod your Mega with no problems.
You can choose older firmware on Sammobile an flash it thru Odin - then you will have fresh stock ROM on your unit. There are many tutorials how to do it.

Many thanks, guys.
I've been on Sammobile and selected "I9205XXUCNA2_I9205BTUCNA1_BTU.zip", which I intend to install in the next couple of hours unless anyone on here screams at me that I shouldn't! I'm in the UK with a GT-i9250, so I believe that's the right version for me.
To be honest, I'm not worried about tipping the flashing counter (if I even understand properly what that means). I rooted my phone some time ago, and liked that. Two weeks ago I decided to try Cyanogenmod since I've never used a different ROM. I wasn't impressed, and have decided I want to go back to Samsung original. If, in the process, I prevent myself from ever being able to flash another alternative ROM, or I void the phone's warrenty in any way, I can live with that.

OK, it's your choice... in fact newest firmware do not offer nothing new but bootloder without return and KNOX. CNA2 it's firmware with KNOX embedded. For mundane user this means nothing special, but for somebody who plan to root and mod it could be pain in... Try to read a little about rooting firmware with KNOX... but as I said, you are warned... tipping counter means setting flag which shows to e.g. service so there was installed unofficial software and it means so you are lacking your warranty. With firmware with KNOX this is irreversible because setting such flag physically burns efuse in system making hardware change. Cheers...
I stay on firmware without KNOX because of possibility to change ROMs and easy install custom software. Waiting for KK which for sure will have 'new type' bootloader and then will be no choice...

Hmmm, you are right... In such case i recommend you to install custom ROM MegaFireMJ2V6 made by megalomanic14 on basis stock MJ2 which you can find HERE.
Actually I am using this ROM and can say it is very good - looks like stock but is much faster. It's rooted already. Version X offer firmware stripped from unneeded apps to the extent.

Thank you very much. Most of that sentences was Greek to me, but I get the idea! The truth is, I put my foot into the water of flashing custom ROMS, and decided it wasn't for me. I just want one, reliable ROM that I can live with for many months without having to change it. That's why I decided to go back to Samsung, because there were too many bugs in Cyanogenmod and I don't want to start testing one ROM after the next. I just want to install a reliable, bug-free ROM now, and have done with it. So you think that MegaFireMJ2V6 would be such a ROM in my case?
PS:
It seems MegaFireMJ2V6 can't be downloaded from that link anyway?

Thank you, but I've tried this several times, and the only download available is the most recent.
You are wrong. It shows all the firmwares released for a model. I can see all the releases for GT-I9200. Attached is a screenshot of the older firmware without knox....
As far as I understand it, these are all the same ROM, simply different versions for different countries. When I put in my phone, GT-i9250, I am presented with a similar page, but it's only the one ROM; 4.2.2 with KNOX.
Ok man, I am done trying to explain things to you. The list you showed only displays Knox firmware, but what you said is not true. Here is another site with older firmware displayed for the I9205. There is no I9250 model Mega afaik..

Nothing yet brother. We are all waiting for some Devs to get interested in this phone so we can do the Root, Rom, Recovery thing! Samsung screwed it up by making it exclusive to ATT when the popularity could of gone higher if it were in more wireless companies! Thanx Samsung! Just give it time. The phone just came out and hopefully a Dev will jump on this phone soon!
I will soon buy this phone!!! In greece is unlocked to any carrier and almost every shop sells it...i hope they change the AT&T thing fast!!
I have bought this phone with the hope that cyanogenmod arrives on this device. Maybe the problem that blocks the interest of developers is the chipset exynos 5430...

But who cares about knox? It's just some useless "feature" that makes no sense (booting on a different OS to keep your data "secure" wtf is that bs about really...) and warranty void is nothing to be afraid of, if u have a perfectly functioning device you won't need the warranty... just want a fking custom rom to get rid of bloatware-touchwiz and make it all black and awesome ...screw knox!

Correct. There were a couple in there but they were deleted. Just wondering why. I understand no actual ROM's are available but there were discussions.
AFAIK they were moved under "General". It was just "Join Forces" and "Root Galaxy Alpha" threads. I don't remember that there were any other threads.

But can't we flash it with Clockwork ROM Manager app ?
We already have the root available and we can then install the ROM Manager.apk and flash a rom with that ... I think/hope.

AFAIK they were moved under "General". It was just "Join Forces" and "Root Galaxy Alpha" threads. I don't remember that there were any other threads.

The phone just came out and hopefully a Dev will jump on this phone soon!

guys ..i will make a recovery for you all ... please provide me the boot.img , recovery.img and build.prop .... as soon as possible
Decided not to buy one anymore, not worth it since I will just be getting annoyed at Samsung's TouchWiz... Will recheck forum in 1month or so near Black Friday and see if there's anything new.
Till then, I wish you gl, it's a great phone (perfect form factor) but the OS on it is utter fail and I wouldn't last a day, would be switching to my S2 with SlimSaber ROM in a glimpse

[Q] Where can I find the stock 5.0 upgrade to install using TWRP?

I have Android 4.2 installed on my Galaxy S4. Since I rooted my phone as soon as I got it, I never got any OTA updates beyond that. But now I hear that Android 5.0 (Lollipop) is out for my device, and I want to install it. But all I can find are custom ROMs, and I don't want to install one of those as then I'll have to do a factory reset, which I just did a few weeks ago and I'd rather not have to do all the setup again.
Can someone please point me to where I can find the stock ROM update downloads? I'd like to keep root access after flashing, so let me know if there's anything special I have to do for that.
Thank you!
AFAIK, it's not out yet for our phones.

That's a shame; maybe I read wrong. That being the case, where can I find the latest one that is out?
I'd recommend this ROM, based on stock ROM with limited debloating and a few nice tweaks. There is a link in the first post to the completely stock ROM it is based on by Jkruse if you want that.

It does not have the hot spot toggle.

Actually Redflea's post is what I'm looking for. I said previously that seeing as Lollipop isn't available yet, I'd like the most recent one that is. Thanks though.

I just flashed that ROM and it seems to work perfectly! Thanks a lot!
EDIT: Does anyone know how to mark this as resolved? I'm new here.
Posting this here in case anyone else is looking for the same thing and finds this thread: Lollipop is out now, and someone has posted what I originally asked for here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...ment/rom-i545oc1-5-0-1-100-stock-mdk-t3097902
I haven't tested it though; I'm waiting for one that's been modified in the same way as the one posted earlier in this thread. If anyone knows where I can find one, please post the link!
