VoLTE (Advanced Calling 1.0) - Xperia Z3v General

Anyone hear when the Z3v will get VoLTE, Store employee said end of Q4/15, but I am really hoping he wrong.

Ha ha ha! When I bought the Z3v on launch day the store employee said end of the year...aka...end of Q4/14!! [emoji1]

My gawd, I know Verizon employees are wrong most of the time about information like this, but he sure does sound unmistakably more wrong. And I hope he is wrong since there is no way Verizon could take that long to add that much bloat.

One of the Motorola engineers says that the Droid Turbo doesn't have Lollipop yet because VoLTE wasn't supported natively until 5.1. Maybe we are waiting on the same thing.

I heard Droid Turbo received an update a month or two back and VoLTE sucks for all the users. Bad call quality and all.
So much misinformation...

The VZW rep that supports my company said Q1/2015 so within the next couple weeks if he's correct.
I'm not holding my breath. I switched to VZW from AT&T for slightly better coverage but the fact is VZW phone options suck. I don't even use my Z3v owing to no VoLTE...so I'm stuck using an iPhone 6 until they fix it. All my other phones are GSM/UMTS. Might just go back to AT&T so I can get a Z3 compact.

Turns out the grass isn't always greener...

So after going through 3 Eris handsets and finally finding a CSR who had enough to sympathy on me to send out an Incredible, I've now gone through 2 of the latter. Both have reboot loop issues, the first wouldn't even go past the quietly brilliant screen while the second can go four hours before deciding not to work for an hour. This is the most frustrating thing I've ever been through. I'm gonna try to talk customer service into a new Inc instead of a refurbished one and see if that changes anything. Otherwise I'm just going to keep the third Eris and steal my moms upgrade in June I guess.
Moral of the story, just because something looks better doesn't mean it always is.

I went through 3 Eris's and I'm on my second D2, which I haven't had any problems with. The refurbs from Verizon are hit and miss, mostly miss. Good luck getting them to send you a new one. I have a feeling your going to have to put up a good fight for that. Hopefully it works out for you though.
Fortunately I've had nothing but good experiences with customer service. I'll ETF my contract if they refuse to help and I'll go to Sprint.

Never had an issue with my original new devices on Verizon, so never had to deal with the refurb. But I'd still take mom's in June and get something hardcore (Like the Merge?)
If the third one coming on Tuesday has the same issue then that's exactly what I'll do.

I was hoping for the Merge as well, but everything that I have seen rumored about it lately says it is going to Alltel. (several sites are posting that the Merge passed FCC yesterday for Alltel) So probably it wont be in your average Verizon store. I was hoping for an HTC device that has something smaller than a the mammoth 4.3 inch screen and the keyboard was something of a bonus to me.
I'll probably be going with an HTC device when I get my upgrade/ get a different carrier. Moto has made me never want to buy another phone from them because of the efuse, and the Evo is awesome....

Why would they not lock down the bionic after the success they had with the x? Sales and security wise. Locking it down didn't hurt either company. A tier 3 Verizon tech told me not to be surprised if it's businessas usual. They know I'm rooted and "hacked" so I don't care. Time to leave Verizon because they want **** locked down as hard as possible.

what did you say to get them to send you a different phone? Does threatening to cancel your contract early work?

I just told the tech lady that after having had 3, I was really not looking to get another one and she just gave it to me, no ifs, ands, or buts. They've already offered to send me an X because of the Inc trouble, but I said I'd give the Inc one more shot, so tomorrow is HTC's last chance to redeem themselves in my eyes.
Hit or miss again... my husband tried it with Verizon and the rep told him Quote: "go ahead." there was no help at all, no "You've been such loyal customer for 10+ years... what can we do to help?", no "Sorry to see you go." nothing, just a basic "Ba-bye!" He is now with Sprint and so far very happy.
This one works! Only problem I've found with it so far is an unexplained lagginess while on the charger, but that I can live with. I wouldn't have had a problem leaving Verizon for Sprint over this issue, it would've been completely unacceptable for them to leave me hanging after all the issues I've had with them, and I would've gladly taken my money elsewhere.

No Marshmallow for us.

I guess it doesn't come as a surprise that Lollipop is our past upgrade. A list of devices slated for Marshmallow list the S5 as being the oldest phone to receive it. I guess most of us expected that but now seems like it's confirmed. See link.

I'm not surprised. I'm sure there will be some sort of port, but this phone had a good run.
Google needs to take a page out of Apple's book and update all the phones that are within reasonable specifications. They also need to come up with a plan to eradicate the fragmentation that is getting worse with every update. It's completely senseless to have that much of a fragmentation problem, given the talent and brains behind the Google tech machine. I think I could solve their problems. With a little compensation of course
Now that Verizon of pushing me out of my UDP plan I don't really need root to unlock tether. The only other thing I use root for is titanium so I get my application data since most application don't restore data from store. I'm considering switching to iPhone just cause they support their phones much longer than even the nexus line. Currently the only Android phones that are secure are the latest nexus phones.

@tshelby73, I am also a grandfathered (not that it means anything anymore) unlimited user. I was livid with last week's announcement, and put my voice all over the forums.
I decided to try the Best Buy contract hack to see if I can turn the tables on Verizon and get back into a contract at current pricing for Unlimited. I used to think contracts were evil incarnate. but, after looking all over for better options, it seems like VZW's coverage with Unlimited at legacy pricing is the best available.
I created a new order on Best Buy online, and used my neglected Verizon upgrade to get a Moto X (no cost and therefore essentially no tax). They say that if you never activate with the included SIM, and just use your own, you fulfill the new contract, keep your pricing and your present device. the new device is gravy (my GF needs an AT&T phone). If it fails to work, I will return the kit, and go elsewhere (probably Google Fi on a $299 Nexus 6).
FWIW, i switched to an LG G3, which tethers, has 2560x1440 display with all the goodies of the S4, and will be getting marshmallow. $159 on fleabay.

Yep. And since Google no longer makes any phones, that's a very easy thing for them to do. In fact, they're already doing it for all of their phones!

I'd be satisfied with 5.1.1 Lollipop . I think that's not happening either! What I don't understand is reading about 5.1 it is supposed to solve a bunch of security issues & because there is third party app on verizon phones for monitoring , you would think it would be a gimme.

A Sad Reality

In October 2014, I enthusiastically purchased my Sony Z3v at full price. There is no question in my mind that it was and still is an outstanding device. But this does not excuse the fact that many of us purchased this device with the understanding that Lollipop was imminent by end of year 2014 and simultaneous voice and data would be available shortly thereafter. It doesn't matter if there are hacks available or not. My purchase was predicated on the fact these things were imminent, that Verizon would be enabling and updating these features.
Since then, along with many of you, I have contacted Verizon several times over the last 17 months and each time Verizon representatives have told me to be patient, that the updates were imminent. As a consumer, I had no recourse but to trust what they promised......its not as if I had any options and could sell the device back to Verizon for full value without losing money.
I use my device for work and have suffered loss due to the fact I could not receive data while on calls etc.
This has been such a complete joke. I don't know if a class action suit would even be fruitful. But what I can tell you is that I will never purchase a device or any accessories from Verizon ever again.
So sad.
I completely understand your frustration and sympathize with you on this. Verizon's "policies" makes my blood boil, but only if I associate the device directly with them. (I know, I know... They brand the snot out of everything they sell so you always have their logo to remind you...)
However, I've come to absolutely love this device despite Verizon's broken promises, and actually am now (tonight) buying a second new handset so I may continue to enjoy the Z3V for a few more years to come.
I admit I'm a bit odd; old, set in my ways, don't like change, etc. I went from Droid 1 to iPhone s4 to z3V ever since the Droid came out. But I see handset technology slowing down now. Carriers AND manufacturers are starting to offer less (no SD slots -WTF?!)... I've found a device that suits all my needs and I'm gambling I'll be happy with it for a few years to come. (This thing is twice as powerful as my last laptop and has a 200Gb SD card with a 21MP camera! And a friggin FM radio in it!!)
Granted, you mention a particular need (voice plus simultaneous data), but you knew the handset didn't have that when you bought it and you never really were certain when you did buy it when that feature was supposed to be added. You never got it. Is that a reason to be pissed at the carrier? Yes, most certainly, especially if your livelihood depends partially on it. But the device, well, in my opinion, it's the closest thing to Apple build quality sporting Android that I've seen so far.
My biased, crazy opinion. Afterall, I'm buying a second one to keep in a drawer. LOL!
If I didn't think it would be a total loss, but I'd go grab the Z5/Z5 Premium and go use it on Straight Talk. This is the only way I'd see myself upgrade to a Sony only route.
If I did, I'll buy whatever accessories to keep the phone in top condition since I won't have assurance of a guarantee that I could just warranty my problems if something happened. It's why I'm grateful that having insurance from Verizon on my phone that I could easily get it replaced. :/
Unfortunately the insurance for replacement is "limited time only" at best. I had my handset replaced after I bricked it and it seemed as if it were a close possibility that I might have to settle for something else of "equivalent value". That was 3 or 4months ago. I was super thankful that my replacement looked brand new. I'm pretty particular and I saw no indication that it's a refurb. I can't seem to find a NIB one now.

Limited time only in regards to how many times I can use it? Or how many more months I can have until it somehow runs out?
OTA on the way
Talked to Verizon rep online she talked to the network team and she said this week that ota updates where deployed this month and should be down by end of month. According to them 12% had received the ota. If this is true we should all have lollipop by end of month. If she was lying I will put up her cell phone number so you can all duke it out with her.

Welp, the moderator has spoken.
Anyhow, I wouldn't care so much if it was new or used as long as its in fine, not banged up, and working condition. It's just knowing how long until it would be I can get the most out of the Z3v though...
I feel the same way. Its a great device but Verizon is lame as soon as my contract is up i am moving to TIng. Sony did a nice job of supporting this phone and even offering a way to unlock all the other models of the Z3 but Verizon wants to keep it locked up and then fails to provide the updates themselves. I think i might buy another Z3 (regular gsm one) once I switch though.

I am pleased with my Z3v and will probably use it until the battery starts failing. It would be nice to have an unlocked bootloader but I don't ROM-up phones like I used to and as long as it is rooted and I can use certain root-required apps I like then it is livable.
Unfortunately here in the Nashville, TN area where I live the Verizon network is second to none in quality and coverage, the only viable option if you don't live in an urban area is a Straight Talk phone using the Verizon network. The term "the hills of Tennessee" isn't a glib comment. I have been in situations where friends using other carriers have one or no bars and my Verizon phone had a solid three bars. Also my work occasionally sends me up to southern Kentucky where it is literally a choice between Verizon or nothing. Now there is growing resistance to any new cell towers being erected so it has grown much more difficult for a carrier to improve their network.
I hear ya on that one, Komet1. Verizon is the only carrier that works well in my area too. So this definitely factors into the equation of just how much I can tolerate regarding Verizon's BS policies.
Me as well... Verizon is the only reliable service I can use. So they get my business there by default but that's where I draw the line. So while I am forced to pay monthly for their towers and spectrum I will never buy a phone from them or any accessories from them again. I know it won't make much a difference to them but it's the principle of the matter for me. I can't support their practices in light of my Z3v fiasco with the three Z3v's I have on my account.

I dunno. He Pmed me a link, but I didn't bother checking it out as I was in a hurry. Guess I'll bite, but I don't hold my breath on any of these leaked reports. I find it just a bit curious that he/she had only one post and by date given, seemed to have registered JUST to post that.
Edit: I just checked the link silentswarm sent me via PM and all it is is a screenshot, supposedly of his phone, with a text from Verizon stating, "Free Verizon Msg: The Xperia update to Lollipop is expected to rollout by the end of February. Thanks for your patience."
That's about as weak as I've seen as far as "proof" this far.
I'll eat my words and apologize to silentswarm if he is found to be correct.
I just checked the Verizon forums, one would think if this was legit they would be on fire but no, all is quiet. I'll calling this one bogus.
silentswarm PMed me after the first post this morning with a link to the same screenie, I just spotted it. Granted it looks real.
He said he was a bit of a lurker, I can relate to that, I've been hanging around Reddit for several years and still don't have an account. I guess it was my lack of trust that Verizon will do anything that makes me suspicious.

A few RS988 questions with Verizon

My last three phones have been the Note 2/3/4 and just purchased the G5 RS988 two weeks ago from BHPhoto while it was on sale.
So far the phone has been pretty good, and been working with Verizon with my current SIM card, but I do have a few questions.
1) Even though I have HD Voice Advanced Calling (VoLTE) added on my account, the phone's settings menu will only allow Advanced Voice Calling with the Video Calling grayed out. Is there a way for the video calling to also work?
2) I don't see any options for WiFi calling?
3) When using the 3.5mm headphone jack with a set of earbuds or regular headphones, the volume level isn't nearly as loud as other phones. Normally Viper4Android would fix this, but no root/custom ROM on the RS988. Any other way to get more volume when using headphones?
4) I was hoping the different Theme downloads would also change the white with mint green look of the Settings menu, but it doesn't. Again, I guess this can't be changed due to no root/rom access.
Despite those questions, I do like the G5 more than the Moto X Pure Edition that I tried out earlier in the month. I had wanted to go with the V20, but the G5 was half the price.

1. Not sure, can someone else answer this?
2. It should be in phone app settings. If not then that version of phone doesn't support it
3. Volume+ free search in app store.
4. You are correct.
Smart decision V20 slightly better in specs, but for that…um not worth double the price.

So tried Volume+ but turning on the Headset and increasing from the setting from 0 to +4 actually makes it quieter. This was stated on the download page that this could happen on Stock ROMs.
1. To the best of my knowledge, Video Calling doesn't work. I spent several hours at one of the more tech savvy Verizon stores before they bumped it up to the next level of tech support. I was assured that someone would call me back within a day. That was 4 months ago. I just use Google Duo instead.
2. No support for Wifi calling. Sorry.
3. I honestly hadn't noticed the volume issue, so I can't be much help here.
4. Again, I haven't played with Themes, so I'm no help.
If I were you, I would seriously consider returning the phone to B&H within the 30 day period. It's a good phone, but it currently appears that LG doesn't have any plans to release an Android 7.0 update for the RS988. All the major carriers got the update, but numerous calls to LG support have gone nowhere with this phone. It's hard to believe that a factory unlocked "flagship" phone would get ignored by the manufacturer, but that seems to be the case.

That's too bad if LG doesn't upgrade the RS988 to Android 7 L, as the carrier models have already received their updates over the past couple months.
Since the price BHPhoto had on the G5 was $399, including the 2nd battery, charging cradle, cam mod and VR headset (both of those are really no use to me, and the VR unit is pretty bad), it still is about 300 off retail.
My current issues is that I am so use to the larger 5.7" AMOLED Note series, that going to a smaller LCD screen has been an adjustment, but have been getting use to it.
But besides that, I'm pretty upset with Verizon right now. I've been with them for over 15 years (when there was PrimeCo in FL). Earlier this month I ordered the Moto Z Play Droid on my 2nd line for my mom, as it was $100 with a 2 year contract. I was not aware the line access fee would double from $20 to $40, so called two days later to cancel, but since it had already been shipped, they did an internal UPS return for it to be sent back. Then last week, I went to Best Buy Mobile store to purchase the regular Moto Z Droid that was on a $4.99/month ($120) promo for that line, but it wouldn't process, as Verizon still showed an outstanding order waiting for activation. I called Version and was on the phone with them for an hour, they said it was fixed, I went back to the store and still had the same problem, so they called and talked to Verizon for 2 HOURS and still could not get it resolved. Then the following day (23rd) I was told it was resolved and could go back to the store or order it online, so I opted for the online order. Now today Best Buy send an email saying the online order was canceled. I called them up, and they can't give me a reason why, expect to say if the phone wasn't able to be activated on the line, it is automatically canceled.
Once again I called back to Verizon, given the same "your Moto Z Play order was canceled and returned back, so it shouldn't cause an issue for ordering another phone". But now, the Best Buy $4.99/month promo for the Z Droid ended and is now $14/month (or $26 with Verizon directly), so I'm not getting it.
This was hours of headache, and I'm still not really sure if the problem was fixed or not. So at this point I may wait to see what new promos come out next year with the LG G6 or Samsung S8, and may just end up changing carriers to T-Mobile is they have an attractive new customer promo.
So with that in mind, and regarding the G5 RS988, I could continue using it with Verizon, and if I decided to change carriers next year, I could use it with the new carrier (as it is unlocked), or sell it. Or just send it back now for the $400 refund and go back to my Note 4 and wait to see what pricing is out next year.

LG is lame

The Verizon GS6, a phone older than the V10 got updated to Nougat. If LG is going to stifle creativity the least they could do is timely updates. Can you image if your PC or MAC did not get any updates for over a year... Why do we as consumers allow carriers and phone makers to get away with this?
And to think I sold Galaxy S6 to buy this piece of crap! Biggest regret!
The camera and audio on my V10 are simply awesome.
The rest...not so much!
So LG corporate lurkers...while that G6 looks cool, I could probably count on some engineering stupidity that manifests within a year and some ensuing corporate coverup. No Thanks! When it's time to get a new phone...it won't be LG!
The LG V10 is scheduled for Nougat:

Now when Verizon gets around to finally approving and rolling out the update is another issue entirely...

Korean market in the second quarter, then other markets after, which could mean September at the soonest bust Verizon will need to test it for a year and will update it after I have switched. I am ditching VZW. Nearly 2 decades I have been a customer and they have treated us like **** for that whole time. 127 dollars a month for a single 6gig smart phone (with government employee discount) and a basic flip phone. Their network is not that great. In my area ALL the carriers perform about the same. Sprint has generally the best network speeds. All of them are faster than the 4MBps down I get.
Yep switching to Sprint or AT&T and going iPhone, f**k waiting for updates. Apple at least releases them fairly timely.

It would not be as bad if they didn't lock the phone down and not allow us to do as we wish. No updates plus a locked phone equals total b.s. I enjoy the V10 but would like it a whole lot more with root and a custom ROM.

I wouldn't say the v10 has gotten no updates, just not to the next version of the os. I can't tell you how long I've waited between major updates from microsoft. Until 10, they really didn't do a major change for multiple years. Verizon does suck a bit for c**k-blocking the root, but I would learn the art of patience, if I were you. It does suck, but there are a million other phones to choose from... I guess some people just can't stand but to shove their negativity in everyone's faces. sheesh! Can't we all just get along?
Currently on my 2nd V10, and the only things that I can honestly say that's good about this damn device is sound and removable battery. Locking it up like a prison and dragging ass on updates are constant reminders of why I should have never went back to an LG device.
I too have been with VZW for a long time (Bell Atlantic days actually), with only minimal discounts for being military as well as crappy customer service with over priced fees per monthly billing that make no sense. Before year's end I plan on finally dumping VZW and going elsewhere. I'd be highly surprised if this device actually sees 7.0 by Christmas, which by then would be completely useless.
They are updating the K8v to nougat.

Nice to see a low end phone getting the update before what was one of their flagship phones.

V10 already have the update too, but only in Korea, F600K/S/L are updated with Nougat since yesterday, even before K8v.
Other V10 variants will have the update in a week, or in days to come.

Verizon will receive the update too but a little late since carriers will have to do a revision of it and then put their crappyware inside the update.
For Verizon i think maybe in the end of June you get it, its the problem having carrier phones, everytime you are the last receiving the updates.
not looking like we are going to get Nougat..i guess we are suppose to be happy with the latest security updates...smfh
Edit: I misread the post. The author claims the reps told him Verizon received the update on July 12 from LG and are modifying it for release. So still no release date, but if this is true, it's a hopeful sign.
Original: I posted this in another thread, too, but I just stumbled up on this post which says Nougat is coming on "July 12." I think he meant Aug. 12, because the post was made yesterday. (unless the timestamp is wrong for some reason...)

LG is no more "lame" than any other manufacturer. In this case, the update is on Verizons end. LG has already updated the V10 to Nougat and T-mobile has pushed it out to their users a while ago. Verizon has not, and I will doubt that they will at this point. I have owned Android devices by Samsung, LG, and HTC. You are lucky if you get one OS update on them. One of my HTC's I had for two years got none. If you want a device that is going to be supported in 5 to 6 years, you will have to buy an iPhone. And no, I have never owned an iPhone, but the truth is all of their upgrades are up to Apple. Apple does not let the carriers install garbage software on their devices, so when an update comes out, the testing is all on their end.
