LG is lame - Verizon LG V10

The Verizon GS6, a phone older than the V10 got updated to Nougat. If LG is going to stifle creativity the least they could do is timely updates. Can you image if your PC or MAC did not get any updates for over a year... Why do we as consumers allow carriers and phone makers to get away with this?

And to think I sold Galaxy S6 to buy this piece of crap! Biggest regret!

The camera and audio on my V10 are simply awesome.
The rest...not so much!
So LG corporate lurkers...while that G6 looks cool, I could probably count on some engineering stupidity that manifests within a year and some ensuing corporate coverup. No Thanks! When it's time to get a new phone...it won't be LG!

The LG V10 is scheduled for Nougat:

Now when Verizon gets around to finally approving and rolling out the update is another issue entirely...

Korean market in the second quarter, then other markets after, which could mean September at the soonest bust Verizon will need to test it for a year and will update it after I have switched. I am ditching VZW. Nearly 2 decades I have been a customer and they have treated us like **** for that whole time. 127 dollars a month for a single 6gig smart phone (with government employee discount) and a basic flip phone. Their network is not that great. In my area ALL the carriers perform about the same. Sprint has generally the best network speeds. All of them are faster than the 4MBps down I get.
Yep switching to Sprint or AT&T and going iPhone, f**k waiting for updates. Apple at least releases them fairly timely.

It would not be as bad if they didn't lock the phone down and not allow us to do as we wish. No updates plus a locked phone equals total b.s. I enjoy the V10 but would like it a whole lot more with root and a custom ROM.

I wouldn't say the v10 has gotten no updates, just not to the next version of the os. I can't tell you how long I've waited between major updates from microsoft. Until 10, they really didn't do a major change for multiple years. Verizon does suck a bit for c**k-blocking the root, but I would learn the art of patience, if I were you. It does suck, but there are a million other phones to choose from... I guess some people just can't stand but to shove their negativity in everyone's faces. sheesh! Can't we all just get along?

Currently on my 2nd V10, and the only things that I can honestly say that's good about this damn device is sound and removable battery. Locking it up like a prison and dragging ass on updates are constant reminders of why I should have never went back to an LG device.
I too have been with VZW for a long time (Bell Atlantic days actually), with only minimal discounts for being military as well as crappy customer service with over priced fees per monthly billing that make no sense. Before year's end I plan on finally dumping VZW and going elsewhere. I'd be highly surprised if this device actually sees 7.0 by Christmas, which by then would be completely useless.

They are updating the K8v to nougat.

Nice to see a low end phone getting the update before what was one of their flagship phones.

V10 already have the update too, but only in Korea, F600K/S/L are updated with Nougat since yesterday, even before K8v.
Other V10 variants will have the update in a week, or in days to come.

Verizon will receive the update too but a little late since carriers will have to do a revision of it and then put their crappyware inside the update.
For Verizon i think maybe in the end of June you get it, its the problem having carrier phones, everytime you are the last receiving the updates.

not looking like we are going to get Nougat..i guess we are suppose to be happy with the latest security updates...smfh

Edit: I misread the post. The author claims the reps told him Verizon received the update on July 12 from LG and are modifying it for release. So still no release date, but if this is true, it's a hopeful sign.
Original: I posted this in another thread, too, but I just stumbled up on this post which says Nougat is coming on "July 12." I think he meant Aug. 12, because the post was made yesterday. (unless the timestamp is wrong for some reason...)
https://www.reddit.com/r/lgv10/comments/6prj0q/take_it_with_a_grain_of_salt_verizon_says_nougat/

LG is no more "lame" than any other manufacturer. In this case, the update is on Verizons end. LG has already updated the V10 to Nougat and T-mobile has pushed it out to their users a while ago. Verizon has not, and I will doubt that they will at this point. I have owned Android devices by Samsung, LG, and HTC. You are lucky if you get one OS update on them. One of my HTC's I had for two years got none. If you want a device that is going to be supported in 5 to 6 years, you will have to buy an iPhone. And no, I have never owned an iPhone, but the truth is all of their upgrades are up to Apple. Apple does not let the carriers install garbage software on their devices, so when an update comes out, the testing is all on their end.

[Q] Q3 North America Release Date

I am curious just how many people after hearing the reports that the GS2 woun't be available in the US or Canada until Sept/Oct are seriously considering a switch to another device or planning to use the delay to look for something better that won't have have hardware that is 6 months out of date due to a long delay from final production to retail.
With a 2 GHz chip from Samsung, the Tegra 3 and the iFail 5 all rumored for a September-January launch the GS2 is competing with some serious hardware that frankly it won't be on par with this winter for the NA market which is their largest market.
I feel like this is a complete failure on Samsung's part and they should be ensuring that the NA carriers aren't allowed to delay the launch of this device past May. I don't see how delaying this device until Q3 won't destroy their sales. Even if a large portion of their customers don't decided to just buy another device that has near equal or better specs and is available before Q3 I don't see how they will keep customers from waiting to the next generation of devices that will only be 1-2 months away. I know if I have to wait until Q3 and HTC or Motorola announces a Tegra 3 device with 10x the power of Atrix or 2X devices then then I can wait another month or two and get that instead of finally getting the GS2 knowing it is already outdated or will be in the next couple months at best.
Maybe if we get enough people here to make it clear to Samsung that they will most likely be buying a different device for one reason or another due to such a delayed release they will put some pressure on the carriers to not mess around with the device and just release it how it was meant to be and not delayed 6 months so they can load it up with bloat ware no one wanted to begin with.
I know I will be waiting a little longer before buying something else since I don't feel the Atrix or 2X are on the same level as the GS2 but with another 6 months of delays I can be pretty sure something will come along and knock the GS2 off it's pedestal and without a insane delay to their top market for delivering the device and when that day comes and it will Samsung will have officially lost another customer.
So what about everyone else, who feels if this release date is valid for the GS2 that they have lost a customer. Whether it be today or 6 months from now?
I feel slightly the same way, but if the rumors about late Q2/early Q3 are correct, we're looking at, more realistically, June-July.
The original Galaxy S wasn't released until around July-Sept for US carriers, but the European variants were also later, compared to the dates of the Galaxy S 2
Since GS Original was released in UK in June (instead of May for GS2) and the US version was September, it might make sense that we're looking at June-July (with an unfortunate possibility of August) for US.
I'm willing to wait that long, if they can keep from butchering the device for US carriers.
But the combination of lack of information, a much later release date, and the possibility of a neutered phone is definitely making me rethink my previous position, which was "wait for this damn phone at all costs".
I have given up on my wait for this phone at all cost stance already, I am currently in the I will wait until another comparable device lands on Verizon/AT&T (Why does that crap heap T-Mobile get the sensation!?!? I want a carrier that actually has coverage and unless your driving down the highway T-Mobile has no service...) and if their is no offical date for the US by that time then Samsung can say goodbye to my $$.
Really as it stands with no information from Samsung even June seems like a push to wait for if I can find another device before then. If I KNEW I would have the device in hand in June I could probably suck it up but having to sit here holding my breath that it will be June and not September or god forbid October if the release is Sept for Canada and another month for the US ... yeah that is just hard to swallow and I am just waiting for something else to come out.
If Samsung really wants to keep the US market waiting they need to give us an official date at least. Leaving everyone with this anxious feeling of "What is happening when will I be able to get it? Should I keep waiting or just forget about it? Is it even going to be worth the wait when it finally gets here considering the delay?" is just going to cause customers to move on from this device.

Really I wouldn't have any problem waiting a little longer if they would give us some news at least other than 1 rumor that it may be 6 months behind Europe and therefor 6 month outdated hardware.

Yeah I'm starting to get a little fed up with the wait too... Sucks for you guys in the States that you might have to wait till after Canada (yeah that was a shocker that we might actually get tech before you guys lol). I wish that the carriers here and the carriers there would just shut the f**k up take it and just release it already without the bloat. Let the bloat be optional download content if people actually frakin' want it.
I see this slowly becoming a rage thread... I like it... I'm starting to get sick of Samsung ignoring my attempts to contact them just because they don't want to make an announcement yet. More companies need to realize that there is a "Power User" segment out there that wants quick access to new tech. They need to put better methods of getting this out to them as well. Even if it means Samsung goes old school and skips carriers and sells direct. Yeah it would mean checking with both Samsung and your carrier of choice to make sure the support is there, but if you consider yourself one of these "Power Users" you should be doing that anyways.
Will I keep waiting for this phone? Yeah probably because I've been waiting for it since the initial announcement that there was going to be a GS2 back in December... The next question would be is my patience growing thin? Let's just say one bad step on the ice and it just might break
Yeah, I can't really blame Samsung since they've taken good care of Europe as far as this phone's release is concerned. (I'm much happier others get to enjoy it soon, rather than everyone having to wait).
It's just the power of the carriers in the US that really screws over the customers. There isn't a single change that is made to any phone, of any company, by the carriers that is beneficial to anyone.
It's just so ridiculous that you have to wait longer than is necessary, so they can fill the phone with purely useless software and modifications that just get in the way of the design intended by Samsung. And it's all purely for profit for the carrier.
I guess that's Greed for you. Instead of all the extra data plans raking in cash monthly for the carriers, they go well beyond that and squeeze every ounce of phone real estate with what is essentially more annoying advertising.

I have never used T-Mobile. I heard some good things about pricing and call quality and such so I checked them out and based on their map in my area I have 3G coverage along the highway, in the middle of town and no signal what so ever everywhere else. I have nothing against T-Mobile really other than their coverage sucks in my area and that is really the only thing i care about in a carrier... well that and giving me an OS update in a timely manner.
Yeah, we will probably have a much longer wait as the US carriers take their time and **** up the design of the phone like they all did on the first Galaxy go around.
Here comes 4 or 5 compromised versions of the new Galaxy SII all of them lacking something that the others have, but all of them filled to the flipping brim with crap ware that doesn't do God Damn thing but annoy the hell out of you. Asshole US carriers, everyone of them sucks.
Just give me the phone like it is designed, and don't attempt to dazzle me with your bull ****.
i agree with all the complaints i've read in this thread. i'd like to see a more solid release date for the US as well besides Q3. looking at the release dates, Q3 reads like August for the US at the earliest.
i'm thinking i'm going to wait until late May/mid June in hopes for a more solid release date. but if there isn't one by then, i will likely get an import for AT&T after making sure it's completely compatible with their network. at that point i'll be able to afford dropping $600-$700 for it unlocked.

I'm thinking about going this route. Did you have to do anything special to get the phone to work, or did you just throw in your ATT sim card?
Just add the ATT (or Straight talk) Sim and you're good.

No Marshmallow for us.

I guess it doesn't come as a surprise that Lollipop is our past upgrade. A list of devices slated for Marshmallow list the S5 as being the oldest phone to receive it. I guess most of us expected that but now seems like it's confirmed. See link.

I'm not surprised. I'm sure there will be some sort of port, but this phone had a good run.
Google needs to take a page out of Apple's book and update all the phones that are within reasonable specifications. They also need to come up with a plan to eradicate the fragmentation that is getting worse with every update. It's completely senseless to have that much of a fragmentation problem, given the talent and brains behind the Google tech machine. I think I could solve their problems. With a little compensation of course
Now that Verizon of pushing me out of my UDP plan I don't really need root to unlock tether. The only other thing I use root for is titanium so I get my application data since most application don't restore data from store. I'm considering switching to iPhone just cause they support their phones much longer than even the nexus line. Currently the only Android phones that are secure are the latest nexus phones.

@tshelby73, I am also a grandfathered (not that it means anything anymore) unlimited user. I was livid with last week's announcement, and put my voice all over the forums.
I decided to try the Best Buy contract hack to see if I can turn the tables on Verizon and get back into a contract at current pricing for Unlimited. I used to think contracts were evil incarnate. but, after looking all over for better options, it seems like VZW's coverage with Unlimited at legacy pricing is the best available.
I created a new order on Best Buy online, and used my neglected Verizon upgrade to get a Moto X (no cost and therefore essentially no tax). They say that if you never activate with the included SIM, and just use your own, you fulfill the new contract, keep your pricing and your present device. the new device is gravy (my GF needs an AT&T phone). If it fails to work, I will return the kit, and go elsewhere (probably Google Fi on a $299 Nexus 6).
FWIW, i switched to an LG G3, which tethers, has 2560x1440 display with all the goodies of the S4, and will be getting marshmallow. $159 on fleabay.

Yep. And since Google no longer makes any phones, that's a very easy thing for them to do. In fact, they're already doing it for all of their phones!

I'd be satisfied with 5.1.1 Lollipop . I think that's not happening either! What I don't understand is reading about 5.1 it is supposed to solve a bunch of security issues & because there is third party app on verizon phones for monitoring , you would think it would be a gimme.

Is rooting going to end?

I love my LG G3. Love that I have it rooted with custom ROM. It is being kept alive because of this. I recently looked into upgrading (I am with Sprint) and looking at newer models of phones, but I am finding that there are no root solutions/ unlocking bootloaders for the newer models. Now I know all the international phones have some way to root them, but I live in the US and use Sprint. Does anyone think that rooting may become a thing of the past? I read that it is getting way more difficult to root. What does everyone else think?
Get a Nexus. I had the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 5 then figured I'd give the LG G3 a try and am disappointed. All I do is end up flashing an AOSP ROM anyway.
Sent from my LG-ls990 using Tapatalk
How do the newer Nexus phones work with Sprint? Are there specific models you need to get to work with Sprint? Does Sprint WiFi calling work with them?
Currently under family contract with Sprint, so keep buying phones under contract since we are paying for it anyway. I think that is going away even for those of us grandfathered in with older contracts. I will definitely consider Nexus to replace my G3 if I can't get cheap G5 or HTC 10 when I go in.
Best Buy has the G5 for $1 with a 2-year extension. Sale ended, disregard. The same drama surrounding root and BL unlock as we went through with the G3 launch is currently playing out again with people offering bounties and getting in fights and taking their balls and going home. Gave me a lot of bad flashbacks. There are partial methods that have been released and then recalled, for valid reasons, but there are lots of jerks that are trying to bait the devs into releasing something... It's a clusterjam.
The HTC 10 is already BL unlocked via Sunshine (paid app) and if it wasn't $200 I'd already have one. If the G5 gets rooted and I can still get it for $1 I'll go that way. Now that it's back up to $149 I see no benefit to the G5. I got one for my wife and it's nice but if there's no public root method by the time I'm shopping I won't give it a second glance. I know this is off-topic, so sorry.
Rooting is a whole new game now with MM and the encryption on different partitions, and phone makers are less likely to make easy BL unlocks now that Android Pay is a thing.
So, rooting is not necessarily ending, but custom ROMs and recoveries (requires BL unlock) are more likely to fall by the wayside. Time will tell. It's a tenuous game with devs on edge, lay users demanding immediate results, and tempers and egos running hot on all sides. Maybe Pangu will open an Android division and shift the conversation.

Well maybe I am naive or just plain dumb, but I really thought we would be getting Nougat by now. Well VZW will be losing another family plan in a few months - cost of course plays a huge factor too. I'll miss my V10 though.
You do not have to get rid of VZW just stop buying carrier branded phones. Buy direct, like Pixel, Moto, or LG from LG and not through Verizon. Often manufacturers update their non carrier b branded phones right away.

This V10, with extra battery and 64gb SD card, cost me under $70 at Best Buy in December 2015. So I'm ok with branded phones at that cost. I really thought that we would have seen N at some point.

OnePlus 8 5G

TMO is announcing this device in 2 days. And guess what? If you have a 7T McLaren, you are SOL. That is right. If you have the 7T Pro 5G already then you cannot upgrade. So this is the reason they are not working on updates to the firmware because they have a newer phone and they no longer care about ours. I have had this phone for 3 months and they come out with a newer better one? So crappy for them to do this without including those loyal customers. I would happily keep this phone but with no updates, this is unfair. I will be calling them in a day or two to complain but I kinda am doubting that they give a rat patootie. We shall see. Update soon.
Where is it confirmed there will be no future firmwares? The 8 seems like a sidegrade to me, some improvements, but some other things are worse though.
They promised they would support the Sprint spectrum when the merger is complete so that's at least one future firmware they owe us.

I would happily keep this phone but with no updates, this is unfair. I will be calling them in a day or two to complain but I kinda am doubting that they give a rat patootie. We shall see. Update soon.

OnePlus has always released a phone every 6 months. This is perfectly normal and this phone will continue to receive updates.
Their contract with carriers means they have to release updates for 2 years I believe.

TMO is announcing this device in 2 days. And guess what? If you have a 7T McLaren, you are SOL. That is right. If you have the 7T Pro 5G already then you cannot upgrade. Considering that the April 2020 security update was just released today I don't know what you mean about no firmware. They have been releasing every month since I got this phone pretty much. It's not really surprising it was late in the month either as I'm sure both OnePlus and T-Mobiles software teams are probably running shorter staffed due to the pandemic.
Just got it
