[Q] Buying the Edge in South Korea for UK use, worth it? - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my wife is thinking of flying home for a few weeks next month.
If it turned out cheaper to buy the Gold 64Gb Edge in Korea (which it most probably will be), would it work exactly the same as buying one in the UK. There're no different chip variants for different markets are there?
Also warranty shouldn't be a problem, since there are Samsung Repair centres in the UK anyway, right?

Found out the price...s6 edge 64gb ₩978,000 */ *597pounds
So much cheaper in Korea than England

Well, there are different bands of course. If they all work on your carrier and the other variant is cheaper, then you should give it a try. Korean variants tend to have different things from the international ones. LG G2 from Korea has an antenna so you can watch TV, for example, while international variants don't.
Honestly I don't know if this kind of differences exist between these versions, but as long as I know, some manufacturers if not all, only support the warranty in the country in which it was legally acquired. Maybe in the EU this don't happen, but it did happen to me when I bought a T-Mobile device in the US and I had no support in Mexico for it.

Who's your carrier in the UK? Check the bands and see what US variant supports that band. I take it you're with a GSM carrier in the UK?

I'm with Three Mobile, they use these bands.
2100MHz UMTS/HSDPA/HSPA+/DC-HSPA+ 3G
800MHz LTE (planned)[55] 4G
1800MHz LTE[56] 4G

There is only a Band difference
or a Spec difference in the phone also ?
Thanks

The Korean version might have dmb player, but that's usually all.

Here are the supported bands of the T-Mobile variant:
Quad Band GSM; LTE: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 17; UMTS: Band I (2100), Band II (1900), Band IV (1700/2100), Band V (850), Band VIII (900)
Therefore, everything should work except the 1800MHz band....

Why would I need to know tmob bands, I'm not getting it in America and I'm not with tmob uk.

T Mobile is the exclusive US carrier for Sony Xperia. That includes all the different phones with Xperia in the name including the Ultra. If T Mobile does not sell it, it will be in the Sony store. The phone will work on ATT as well although the version currently on sale outside the USA will only work on the 3G network.

The c6806 is already available, and is the LTE version for north America.
Take a look here http://negrielectronics.com/sony-xperia-z-ultra-c6806-unlocked-black.html from what I read on internet while looking which I need in Europe. People was saying that the LTE bands on this model are those for North America. ATT use 700 and 1700 bands and T-Mobile use 1700 only. Both of those bands are on the C6806 version.

Hey guys
If I remember correctly, if the phones is compatible with ATT it usually runs well on Canada LTE's right?
Thanks for any input regarding Canada better model to chose ( Rogers for example )

Will all the S5 models work on any network?

These models, do they all work on diff carries network? What I mean is, can I bring a Tmo to Verizon to ATT ... etc?
Because it looks like they all use simcard.

Good question. I'd like to know as well. You can def unlock the TMO and ATT GSM versions and pop each others SIM's in I doubt it's the same for CDMA versions.
Isn't the bootloader on the TMO unlocked?

The short answer is no. First you divide the phones into two groups; GSM and CDMA which are incompatible networks, apart from limited overlap on the data side. Note that Sprint in particular, locks down their CDMA phones pretty tight so that it is very difficult to use them on other networks, particularly competing domestic CDMA carriers.
GSM phones, at least the higher end models like the S5 are multi band and will work on pretty much all GSM networks. However each model is optimized for a given carrier's frequencies. So your phone may roam or (if unlocked) accept a SIM from another network, it probably won't work on all of the frequencies of the other network. The effect of that may not be much in a dense urban area, perhaps a little more network congestion or slower data speeds. But in fringe areas served by only one frequency, it could mean no coverage for the foreign handset.
The TMobile model is one of the best, generally speaking, in that it is capable of operating on more frequency bands than most other models. However what is best is subjective depending on where you want to use it and what model you have in hand. The Samsung support site lists the frequency bands that each variant will work on and you can see that they vary between carriers.
Interestingly it appears that the GSM S5's are manufactured with the hardware capability to operate on all GSM and LTE bands. But the different models only enable the frequencies used on the native carrier. Which is to say marketing (or by a real stretch, perhaps cost saving) initiatives are locking us out of better roaming capabilities.
.
The Asian models do not have LTE antenna on them.

Well again what you say is only correct for certain countries in asia. Not to single you out but there is a lot of misinformation, usually assumptions on this subject and it's productive to clarify the facts.
There were both LTE and non-LTE versions of the Exynos (4 core) S3. The GT-I9300[N/T], SHV-E210K/L/S and SGH-N035 had 4 cores and LTE and the GT-I9300[N] had 4 cores without LTE support. Not to mention that various asian counties like Japan and Australia use the dual core Qualcomm S3 with LTE. So it's not as clearly delineated as you believe.
You also suggested that it costs more to add additional frequency band support to a S5 variant. But this isn't so because the S5 uses WRL-1625 transceiver chipset which has unified support for all GSM and LTE bands. So it costs nothing extra in hardware to add additional bands.
One could argue that omitting secondary parts such as an antenna in a variant intended for a region that doesn't use LTE at all (if such exists) could make unified support moot. But the reality is that increased manufacturing and logistical costs of changing the hardware provisioning on variant handsets is usually prohibitive. It's generally believed that band limitations between variants reside in firmware with the purpose of detering grey market sales and carrier churn.

No, most of the non-LTE asian carriers are using HSPA+ networks which are considerably faster than Edge. The faster HSPA+ implentations are characterized as 42 Mbps networks, which is as fast as some LTE footprints. Advanced LTE rollouts however can double those speeds.
.
I had several people ask me about real world LTE speeds. All I can say is that speeds are highly dependent on carrier networks and will vary considerably between carriers and quite a bit by location as well. One LTE network might see speeds < 5 Mbps while another may be twenty times that fast.
I am seeing 60 Mbps typical speeds with my LTE and ~ 90 Mbps with a strong signal in larger cities. Carrier aggregation which is just rolling out now (and supported by the S5) should see some networks achieving 125+ Mbps speeds.

[Q] Intl vs ATT version?

I live in the California AT&T service area. I have been trying to find out the 4G and LTE bands on the intl and ATT Versions. If I buy the intl version will it be compatible with AT&T LTE bands? Ideally I would like to buy the intl version so that I can get the OS updates when Samsung releases them without waiting the extra time for AT&T to release the upgrade. I also dont want the AT&T bloatware.

Does anyone know whether the radios for AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and international version are different, such as with the LG G3? Normally gsmarena has info on the frequencies, but nothing is on there yet. Thanks
The unlocked international version supports the following AT&T LTE frequency/bands:
850/5
1900/2
The following are all of AT&T frequency/bands:
700/12,17
850/5
1700,2100/4
1900/2
I do not know if the model specific and locked to ATT supports all of their bands or remains identical to the international unlocked version. I do know different bands can be activated via firm ware update, like Moto did with the 2nd gen Moto X. The pure edition got updated to support all of ATT bands instead of just a couple.
From the T-mobile website for the Galaxy S6 Edge:
Quad Band GSM;
LTE: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 17;
UMTS: Band I (2100), Band II (1900), Band IV (1700/2100), Band V (850), Band VIII (900)
From the AT&T site for the Galaxy S6 Edge:
4G-LTE Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 17, 20, 29 and 30
3G - UMTS 850/1900/2100MHz
GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900MHz
So the AT&T version seems to cover more bases in terms of LTE coverage e.g. for those wanting LTE coverage in the UK too, the T-mobile version will work on 3 (3) and EE (3 and 7), whereas the AT&T version will work on 3 (3), EE (3 and 7), O2 (20) and Vodafone (20) [LTE bands shown in brackets]

The International Unlocked version is a UK version that is Sim Unlocked and not attached to any carrier (no bloat and no carrier branding). You can't buy a US version unlocked anywhere in the US. Even the stores in the US that sell unlocked International versions are selling the UK one.

I just called an ATT tech and he told me that while I could get the UK/intl version IT WILL BE COMPATIBLE WITH ATT LTE. BUT since not all the bands are supported the intl version will have limited LTE coverage in the US.
For example the intl version only supports 2 of the 4 bands in the US. (Bands 2 and 5, when bands 2, 4, 5, 17 are available). So if the towers near your house are only using bands 2 and 4 you'll get less coverage/signal as if the towers near your house supported more bands.
What? T-Mobile version doesn't support band 12 LTE?

Hmmm... That's interesting because looking at the "Tech Specs" section for the Galaxy S6, as listed for ordering directly from Samsung in the UK, the Galaxy S6 appears to have support for all of the LTE and UMTS bands that are used by AT&T, here in the States:
http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/mobile-devices/smartphones/android/SM-G920FZKABTU
This info is listed on the above link for the Galaxy S6 (model SM-G920F), but (oddly) not for the Edge (SM-G925F) model. It shows the following bands as being supported:
2G GSM
GSM850, GSM900, DCS1800, PCS1900
3G UMTS
B1(2100), B2(1900), B5(850), B8(900)
4G FDD LTE
B1(2100), B2(1900), B3(1800), B4(AWS), B5(850), B7(2600), B8(900), B12(700), B17(700), B18(800), B19(800), B20(800), B26(800)
Unless there's something different about these bands due to the preceding "B" designation before the band number, it looks like the UK version should support LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 17, which is what AT&T are supposed to be using here in the States...
Not sure why Samsung doesn't list the "Tech Specs" on this site for the Edge model, but I would presume and hope they are identical to the Galaxy S6 SM-G920F model they list on their UK site.
Anyone have further details or insight into this? Hopefully I'm not misreading something and spreading erroneous info here!

That doesn't sound right based on what I've read. This page says what AT&T uses:
"AT&T 4G HSPA and HSPA+ use 850Mhz(Band 5) and 1900Mhz(Band 2) bands but it all depends on area if they own a license. LTE uses Band 17(700Mhz), Band 5(850Mhz), Band 2(1900Mhz), Band 4(1700/2100Mhz) currently"
Then according to this page the SM-G920F version in the UK does support LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 17. This page (pdadb.net) here seems to show that the SM-G920I also supports those LTE bands. Then in comments on Android Central this page gravage says he owns a G920I and it works without a hitch.
Thoughts? I'm looking into getting the international version as well so I can avoid AT&T's crap.

LTE bands

Am I the only one who is mad that no one is following apple on the one thing they did perfectly? Apple has almost every LTE band you could need in one device. I travel for work a lot, I have to go to Japan and middle East. The bands in the American nexus devices lacks every band used in Japan on DoCoMo (1,19,21) except the 5X has band 1.
Right now I'm debating nexus 6P (can't do a 32GB device do no 5X) or the iPhone 6S plus. I'd grab the nexus in a heart beat if it had the bands I need. Ugh I hate these decisions lol.

Aye I know it has the Japanese bands, and all of AT&T's current bands, missing is the T-Mobile band 12 and AT&T band 30. I'll probably get the international version, assuming I can order it (may have to order from Google Japan) I just want as many bands as possible for the ability to easily change carriers.
Maybe someone will do what was done for the Moto N6, combine most of the bands into one QCN file.

Is this due to licensing, physical, or software limitations (binaries not supporting certain bands)?

Licensing or physical (no one would be able to tell until they have the devices). You have to pay per band for licensing, and some bands need certain filters and amplifiers that are external to the modem chip. Those obviously cost money so sometimes aren't included (though sometimes are just not activated in software since they could save money by not having to retool the production lines to make different models)

Well we know band 12 is just locked right now for Tmo, but should be available by launch.

This is admittedly where the iPhone just crushes any android device honestly. My ex went to Canada and had excellent service. She then went to Italy and the UK and never had to swap sim cards (some kind of T-Mobile service) and had 4G everywhere. Obviously she wasn't thinking of LTE bands, but I was impressed when she told me about it. But I now have to worry about phones that support bands in the UK and U.S.

Aye, though T-Mobile will show LTE (since that's what it connects to) its still throttled though which is why I get local SIMs overseas.
I'm honestly thinking of buying a 6S plus for myself for Christmas. Great LTE coverage and maybe I'll save money buy not buying a new phone every few months, since there's only one new iPhone a year (not counting the 2 sizes) lol.

Dennis, I currently live in Japan, and use DoCoMo. According to the DoCoMo rep I spoke to on the phone, DoCoMo uses bands 1, 3, 19, 21, 28.
Are you saying the American version won't work at all? The difference in price between the American and Japanese versions of the nexus 6P is laughable. ¥74,000 to ¥59,000 yen respectively.
I'm in Japan right now too. The only band the US one has is band 3. I don't know where or how saturated band 3 is, or if it would work well. I'm debating very much right now. Buy nexus 6P for $800 and get the 128GB and stay with Android, hoping it works for the next few months here. Or buy the iPhone 6S plus and get less storage for more money and have to switch to iOS.
Edit: meant $700 for the 128GB N6P (approximately after tax), the 64GB iPhone 6S plus is $849 before tax. Ugh.

I've brought my N4 and N5 overseas and had zero issue on tmo just continuing to use my phone over the last 3 years.
does anyone know if this will work on the verizon XLTE frequencies? I can't tell by the displayed specs.

in case anybody else was wondering....
Band 4: 1700MHz F (XLTE)
I have a question. Are you guys getting LTE signal on N6P? When AT&T activated my new sim for N6P, I'm getting an H signal. I asked the guy at AT&T said it's HSPA+. Weird, because when I was on my N5, I was getting "LTE" from AT&T.

Thanks man, I did your suggestion but, no bueno. I think the dude at ATT didn't set up my phone correctly.
It is definitely a downer because my iPhone will be nice to have during international travel but that's only 3x a year so I'll live.

Where do you travel to? The 6P will work in most countries around the world. It has Band 2/3/4/5/7/12/13/17/25/26/29/30.
Most of Europe will be fine. Most of Oceania is fine. Most of Asia excluding China and Japan. All of North and South America works.

bands for tmobile SM-T825

My note 10.1 2014 intl version is dead. looking for new one.
look like sm-t825 should be good replacement.
bands:
according to frequencycheck.com, sm-t825 is missing LTE B12 (700 ac) for tmobile
I am in Denver, here is map of 700 spectrum
http://www.spectrumgateway.com/t-mobile-700a-spectrum
can somebody tell if sm-t825 will get decent speeds in Denver?
also , here is some note from seller that 4g/LTE is not working for tmobile ( check description of an item)

thanks

For bands on T-Mobile, you will need to get T825Y (b2,b4,b17). All LTE versions of the tablet as of this moment does not support B12. Perhaps it will only be supported if a North American LTE version is released.
Coverage is probably the more critical issue compared to speed, as the tablet drops to no service in the B12 areas around me.

I have a European SM-T825 and it works great on AT&T. I'm in a secondary market so I assume I'm on the 700Mhz band. Should work on T-Mobile 700Mhz since they got the capacity from AT&T.
Any chance you can try tmobile sim?
What area of US are you located?
thanks
I am using T825 with T-Mobile SIM getting decent LTE speeds in MD/DC area. I bought mine a week ago from Dubai.

T-Mobile uses band 12 for 700MHz. The EU Tab S3's don't support that band. They also don't support AT&T band 30 but that isn't as critical as band 12 on T-Mobile. Band 12 is T-Mobile's low frequency band which help greatly with distance and penetration.
