Suggest on the LCD Light Bleed! - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I got my nexus 9 last week from Best Buy. The serial number is HT4C, which means it has been manufactured in December of 2014.
I don't have like any problems with it so far, except the light bleed I think. I was not sure if this is too bad or this is normal and I can't get any Nexus 9 to have better LCD than this, so I decided to attach some pictures so maybe you guys can suggest either I should go and ask for a replacement or just deal with the current one...for comparison I have also put a pic I took in similar condition from my HTC One M8 screen...
Everything else is working fine..the volume button is working great and no problem with back cover...but also sometimes I feel when pressing the multi tasking button there is a delay to show the app, would anyone know how to fix this (is this even a problem?).
Thanks!

A slight delay every so often when hitting the recent app button shouldn't be any indication of a major issue. Unless you are having major lag, I wouldn't worry about it. It's really hard to judge how bad light bleed is in real world use from pics. My Nexus 9 does have some visible light bleed during boot up while the screen back light is unrestricted, but during use it is not noticeable at all. Even when watching letter boxed movies. I'm sure it would probably look much worse than it is if I took a pic of it during boot up. Honestly, if the only time you can see it is during boot and it isn't giving you issues during use, I wouldn't bother returning or exchanging. This device really has a beautiful display and, although I'm sure there are a few people with really bad screens, I think the issue is being over exaggerated.

I agree, this is why I posted this here. However, the problem is there whenever there is something with a black screen, like when watching movies, I can't avoid looking at black stripes on the top and bottom and see the light bleed....which is kind of annoying.
But overall, the display is great, very warm colors and good contrast.
Also, regarding the delay..no I am not experiencing lags, but sometimes when i.e. I play the FiFa ultimate for 2hrs and then come out of the game it takes 1 second or so to home screen get loaded.

I watch a lot of Netflix, etc in bed with the lights off when the wife is sleeping, so it would probably drive me a little crazy if the lightbleed was very noticeable under those conditions.
Taking a second to load the homescreen after two hours of gaming isn't anything to worry about. Some apps will do that, some won't from my experience.
I have one of the first Nexus 9's, a white 32gb. I'm very happy with the screen and have had no performance issues other than what we've come to expect from Android. The only (non)issue with mine si a slightly flush volume up button on the volume rocker. But it still clicks nicely and I've never considered returning mine.
I was playing with two demos at the local best buy the other day and the buttons on the white demo they had were horrible! But the Black demo had the most raised buttons I've ever seen. They were amazing, a made a very firm "click" when pressing them. But, when I went into the settings and started scrolling, the screen started to do this weird purple flickering thing, so what can you do?
As long as you are happy with yours, that's all that really matters.

A couple weeks ago i bought 2 nexus 9's from 2 different best buys. both were December builds. One looked like yours when it booted; it looked really bad IMO. My other one wasnt nearly as bad, there was some bleed in a few spots, mostly upper right, but there was no significant color shift. i returned the bad one. so, you can do better, but its all luck of the draw. depends if it's worth your effort and time and how noticeable it is in normal usage.

During the past two days, after my work, I went to Best Buy store that I got my Nexus 9 from...the first day I opened 3 Nexus 9s all with HT4C serial numbers and 2 of them had awful light bleeds and the third one had bad volume buttons...I ended up with bringing the third one to see if I can deal with the buttons. However, the buttons were so bad and I also saw that this one also has the same color shift but small light bleeds...
Today I went back to BestBuy and asked them to change it again. They give me another HT4C and I checked it over there, the built quality and volume buttons are great and small light bleed...but when I got home I saw that this one still has the color shift problem...
I think all of the high res LCD panels have this problem, because I put my N9 beside my friends iPad mini 2 and surprisingly saw that the iPad has also exactly the same color shift on black screen in Max brightness...So, I think I should deal with it....
BTW, I also called google and they said some light bleed and color shift is normal and probably any replacement device I get is going to have these issues (they didn't call it a issue though and just said ..are going to be like that).
So my question is, could you please take a photo from you N9 in a black screen in Max brightness to I see how it looks?
Thanks.

You're fretting over nothing. No one uses their device with a black screen with max brightness. Besides, it's an lcd screen, it will never be jet black in that condition.

OK, here is how my story ended yesterday ?, during the past days I swiped 7 nexus 9 tablets from 2 different Best Buy stores! Sounds crazy? But all of them had problems...three of them as I posted here had severe LCD light bleed, the other one had volume bottun problem and two of them had soft back cover problem (!), that was so funny even the best buy costumer service couldn't believe the back panel could be like that when we opened the box!...anyways...finally O got one yesterday (the last one in their store, lol) and thank to god, it has min light bleed...volume buttons are OK and the back cover as far as I checked is fine...some part of the right top of it seem to be soft again but its negligible and since I want to put it in a case I will never notice that...fare enough I think for the money I paid and the fact that got sth that at least looks to be not full of faults...
Here is a photo from its screen, in max brightness...thanks again.

I know and agree, but when sth has problem and you know that it should not be like that, then I think it is not fretting over nothing...I love nexus..and this is why I swiped 7 N9s to get one without these problems...thanks

When I first got my Nexus 9, I looked very carefully for the light bleeding as I heard it was really common on these devices. And to be quite fair, mine had a lot when you ramp up to max screens brightness (especially on the bottom left corner). But after several months of use, I hardly see it now as it's due to myself not always nitpicking at it. You will eventually grow accustomed to it so in the end, it'll definitely fade into the background of your device

The first one I got from Amazon, a early build white 16gb had really bad bleed and the buttons were flush. They sent a replacement with a later build date and it has MUCH less bleed and great buttons. I was fortunate I assume.

I have one of the same models you have I bought from best buy yesterday. I'm really happy with mine. I have no perceivable bleed and the build quality is excellent. The back of the device has no flex. Its much better than the floor model in the store for sure.

Screen Burn... (Image Retention)

I am on my second Prime and discovered that my second one had some nasty screen burn. Short story... My first Prime I received on 12/27. UPS damaged it by dropping it on a corner, which is Best Buy's fault for only wrapping my Prime in plastic. This Prime was perfect.... no dead pixels, no wireless issues, typical GPS issues, no major light bleed... it was just damaged on a corner thanks to UPS.
I got my new Prime on 1/3 after doing some *****ing to Best Buy execs. This one I noticed right away that there is a slight light bleed on the right hand side (landscape) and 2 dead pixels. 2 out of 1,024,000 pixels isn't bad IMO, plus they were on the edges.
Now, last night I was watching The Devil's Rejects and noticed something funky on the right hand side of the screen (landscape mode obviously). I found a test color that shows my nice problem a lot more clearly... I wish I had something to calibrate the color more precisely to make it show better... Needless to say, I'm PISSED after discovering this thing has screen burn after only a few hours use!!! WTF!? I almost never use it in portrait mode and the brightness is almost always all the way down (auto brightness) because I'm by a lamp.
Here's a picture that I took. My sincere apologies, as taking pictures of LCD's is quite difficult without them showing up all messed up.
CLICK IMAGE FOR A BIGGER VERSION...
I can't get it to show up on camera, but it is clearly the black bar that holds your back, home, etc. buttons, as well as the time. You can see these burned in to this area of the screen.
Has anyone else had this problem yet? Looks like to me I'll be in for Prime #3... Maybe I'll just wait to see what CES has to bring, since I'm not getting what I want out of the Prime.
wow, that's bad... I have not come across anything like that (yet...) and hope that i never do!
I use my Prime right side up (with logo at top) during the day, and then at night when i'm home i use it upside down (logo on bottom right). I haven't noticed any status bar screen burn in yet... But I have always wondered about if the honeycomb status bar could burn into the screen, I guess it really can (and it scares me).
I hope you have better luck with #3. I have never seen status bar burn in on a tablet before but have always thought it was possible because of the way honeycombs status bar is always in view.
I was scared of that as well, but I figured LCD technology has come a long ways and there is no way it will burn in quick. My 3 year old Samsung 46" ToC has had stuff sit on the screen for an hour or two at a time, and I have zero burn issues. Same thing goes w/ my monitors. They've had stuff sit on the screen for 10-15 hours and I've not had an issue. I just really wish the status bar would hide so I can use the full real estate of my tablet and also prevent this issue. I've heard that BB is getting some of these in this weekend, so I may try an in-person exchange. I hope that rumor is true...

The default 1 minute.
The last time i had screen burn was on my first ever LCD HDTV (from polaroid lol). It was cheap and over time it has bad screen burn.
Something is def up with your primes screen... 3rd times a charm
yeah, your best bet is exchanging it. never heard of screen burn in on a tablet before. I think you the first to report this.
Damn, xda duplicating my previous post...
Anyways, If your unhappy with the way you received your prime from BB get a refund. Order from Office Depot, mine came in a white padded bag and ended up being in perfect condition with no defects at all.

The only other device that I have screen related issues with, is my Samsung Captivate. It has ghosting, which goes away with you changing whatever is on the display. I know for a fact this is a burn pm the Prime, since I watched another hour of the movie afterwards and did all kinds of other tasks today, and it doesn't disappear. Kind of disappointing.

What is likely going to keep me at BB, is the fact that I got a credit because I *****ed to execs about their crappy customer service.
I was using the pad heavily last night during the playoff games and my screen burned. I also noticed that a pixel died. It wasn't there when I first received the device. I'm not trippin because it is going back on Monday because of the "no serial number" issue.
This happened with my first one. I ran a pixel fixer over night and the status area was present the next day. I don't think this is screen burn though. It will go away after awhile if you use the tablet in landscape or whichever way you were not using it. I think it's called image persistence. It has to do with pixel charge or something.
Bring up an all gray background and you can really see it.
I'm waiting on a replacement due to stuck pixels and busted vibrator.
After several days of letting it not go in portrait mode, the bar has somewhat gone away. I did go ahead and used it for about an hour in portrait mode on both edges, and the opposite side had no problems with burn/ghosting. The original problem edge regained its problem right away. I would point this to not be a "burn" but rather a sort of long term ghosting. I'm highly disappointed with this one not only for the ghosting, but also several dead pixels. I'm up to 2 that won't turn black and 1 that won't turn colors. The one that won't turn colors is quite obnoxious.
I've been trying to contact Best Buy in regards to exchanging it... but I'm not having any luck with that crappy company. Ugh! All they tell me is I can return it and get my money back, exchange it in the store, or send it to ASUS. Option 1 is a no-go since I got a credit for my first troubles. Exchanging it won't happen since the stores don't have it, and their exchange policy is 14 days. The last one won't happen because I just bought this and I don't want a refurb a week into ownership.
This phenomenon is known as "image retention" and any early gen plasma tv owners will be familiar with it. why its cropping up here....i have no idea. my prime does this, for sure...its most noticeable when going from speedtest app to xda, which i have done a lot of..haha...anyway i have xda set to the black theme, and i see a very prominent white retention of the ad at the bottom of speedtest for several seconds after flipping back over to xda. I've seen it in a few other places, but it always goes away pretty quickly.

Damn, didn't think I'd have to worry about burn in/image retention on a mobile device. Picking my Prime up today and now I'm gonna have that same paranoia I always get when I buy a new HDTV, but even my last two Plasmas never had any real problems (Panasonics). Hopefully this winds up not being a big issues though, sounds like I'll be getting insurance on my Prime after all and just doing arbitrary returns from time to time.
This was one of my first worries when the galaxy nexus was rumored to have on screen buttons rather than cap buttons. I thought amoled screens did get actul burn in. I didn't think it would really happen with these but it is a drawback of ips i guess.
I just wanted to tack this on, since I got a 3rd prime yesterday. This Prime I'm overall happy with, however the image retention still exists on this one. S/N is a BC batch, though I didn't grab the last one unfortunately. I will say this... this Prime's image retention happens when the screen brightness is at like 50% (no IPS+ mode). I flip to another app with a color, and I can see the retained image. Now what makes me quite a bit more happy about this one versus the other one... the image retention disappears after about 2 or 3 minutes. I definitely was not noticing it on a brief watch of the same movie that I noticed the image retention on the first one. My last one held onto the image for days at a time...
Overall 3rd time is a charm. Zero deal pixels, minor light bleed that you get with this style display, the feedback motor is quite a bit stronger, general GPS issues with every TF201, not noticing any horrible WiFi performance either.
I've noticed some minimal Burning over short periods when I have it screen maxed out and with IPS+ on as well and the screen with a fixed white bar or text . But then it goes away in five minutes once I change the image. Never gotten it to happen under Max brightness with out IPS+ or a white static image in conjunction.
I would return it. I also never keep anything static on my screen. Even my wallpaper is active and moving. I've seen LCD burn in all the time on desktop computer screens.
I saw something like this over the weekend.
I had it docked and was writing a blog post in Documents to Go. I spent probably about 3 hours on it. After I was finished with it, I noticed D2G didn't have a spell checker so I closed it and went into Polaris Office to see if it did.
Underneath the transparent gray of the file screen, I noticed something looked weird. I took a closer look and I could still see shadows of the blog post I wrote.
I turned it off and couldn't see any burn in the screen. I rebooted it and went back to Polaris and didn't see it after the reboot.
Now I'm debating sending it back for a warranty replacement.

Severity of lightbleed

On the seperate one tick whether or not you have it. Personally I can spot mine in normal usage at some auto brightness levels. I know that a lot of this will fall under personal opinion, but I would like to hear what people think.
This thread is pretty pointless. The severity is going to be everyone's opinion. There is no set way to measure it without comparing all the devices. And taking pictures of the device is a bad way to measure it because light bleed is amplified horrendously on a camera. Personally, I don't think the light bleed on my N10 is bad at ALL, possibly because I'm somewhat used to it due to my monitor having it.

Perhaps, but I would like to see how bad people think their light bleed is. Personally I have compared it to several other of my devices (galaxy tab 2 7.0, ipad 2, galaxy player 5.0) and none of them have it this bad.
If I stare at the bottom right corner, on a completely black screen, with max brightness, I can notice slight bleed. Looking at the same corner under any other conditions and I can't make out any bleed lol.

Idk, this makes we want to send mine back and try for another, but I don't want to do that and get a worse one back. I can see mine at 100 percent brightness and if I stare at it I can pretty easily see it under normal conditions. My friend couldn't see it for like 20 minutes though, so maybe I am just crazy. With that said he can spot it pretty easily now.

If it's going to be a concern in the long run, I might suggest just returning it.
Currently, I have a multi-touch issue with my screen that doesn't seem to like when I use more then 3 fingers at random times. Although the chances of me using more then 3 fingers is... extremely rare; it does sort of bother me a bit lol. But then again, aside from that, and the very minor bleed I have, everything else seems fine... hmm

Ha ha, almost seems like a best of the worst sort of thing. If it doesn't have one issue it has another. Also the cable they sent me doesn't charge the tablet, I have to use the one that came with my sgs3.
Good to see that the majority has none. Just ordered a new unit. We shall see how this turns out.
My option is not there. Only visible on the start up screen and only when the auto brightness adjusts. They could probably just fix mine by disabling auto brightness on boot up and there would be no way I can see it. Lol
For the people that said they don't have any:
When did you order and is this your first unit?
I'm not sure if mine really counts as light bleed. Since playing with it for a couple of hours I've only noticed two small spots on the very bottom about the width of my small finger. I need to have brightness set to about 60% and a completely dark background to really see it. During normal use with auto brightness on I don't notice it. Is it really possible to get zero light spots in all conditions with these screens?

Well I called for an RMA. Before the csr put it through, I got assurance that should the replacement have worse problems that I could RMA the replacement and keep the original. My problem is a little annoying but I have no desire to go through 6 or more replacements to find that perfect device. Other than the dim strip this thing is flawless so I'd rather not risk warped backs, reboots, or a worse panel. Here's to hoping the one replacement is defect free.

Before returning your Nexus 10...
Call Google and speak to TECH SUPPORT AND NOT CUSTOMER SUPPORT!
I complained about light bleed in my first one, and later came to find out that the idiot in CS put down that I was returning it due to remorse, which means I'd have to pay the restocking fee. Tech will put your return reason as defective or DOA so you don't get charged the fee.
No light bleed on mine. I was surprised since my last two Android tablets (transformer and toshiba excite 10) both had some light bleed noticeable on the black boot screen.
Hi,
order Thursday 22 and Friday 23 received. I also have the problem of "light leakage" on the bottom right corner.
How is the replacement? Should your return the product for exchange or google you refer another product? and then send the product deffect .

Worth bearing in mind that the numbers are skewed somewhat toward people who are concerned about this topic, with a good chance that they have a light bleed problem -- these are generally the folks who will open this thread and vote in the poll. If you could be confident that all XDA readers in the N10 forum would vote, the percentage would be scarier. Not sure how meaningful the stats will really be that are collected in this thread.

Is lightbleed still a problem?

So I'm asking this because I'm planning on returning my nexus 9 tomorrow and getting a replacement, because I have the following
Light bleed
Terrible battery life ( Max of 5 hours SOC )
crappy buttons on the side
The back creaks slightly
Is it worth returning or do you think I'll get the same issues again or maybe worse?

Definitely not worth returning. All you do by returning, is make the next version more expensive for the rest of us by costing HTC and Google for your pointless warranty claim.
I did return it and got a decent unit

LOL, characteristic of LCD. Get used to it -- they ALL do it. If you don't like it, your ONLY option is LED.
Turn down the brightness. Its a big screen, the brighter its set, the less the life. And 5 hours screen on is HUGE.
I quite like the buttons on these things, bit harder to press so you have to really mean it. Nexus 7 is a problem because it is too easy to accidentally bump the buttons.
So quit twisting it.

Are you ****ing kidding me here? Ya let's let ALL these issues go, so the NEXT tablet that comes out is an even bigger piece of **** with more problems because people like you let them get away with it.
Let me ask you this, should we accept ALL light bleed as OK no matter how bad, or is there a cutoff at some point where its no longer acceptable? Right off the bat I'll tell you youre wrong because they don't ALL do it. I just returned a nexus 9 that had next to 0 light bleed. I've never, not once in my life exchanged a device for any reason. Never. But im on my 4th nexus 9, 2 of which had almost no light bleed at all. My last ones screen flickered so bad and the speakers froze and cut in and out so much I couldn't deal with it anymore, which was number 2 nexus 9. Open the new one tonight in the parking lot and boot it. Horrendous lightbleed and volume buttons that were literally ****ing recessed into the frame. I don't know about you, but I'm not a god damn woman so I don't have fingernails to reach a recessed button, and I for damn sure ain't carrying around a ****ing paperclip to adjust the volume on a tablet. So I exchange it. Get nexus 9 #4. Buttons stick out of frame perfectly. Completely different from the one i just had in my hands. But that's not a quality control issue to you. I should have kept the one that had unpressable volume buttons so you won't have to pay more for your next tablet. Too ****ing bad buddy. I'll return EVERY single piece of **** I get, and GLADY pay more for the next version if I don't need a paper clip to adjust the volume, Dramamine for the constant screen flicker, and a speaker that actually plays sound.
Yes or no is this acceptable light bleed?
And if I sounded pissy in that post, its because on nexus #4 I just noticed the entire upper left hand side of my screen is completely ****ing yellow/brown, it looks like absolute ****. So even this one has bad light bleed when the screen is dark, and when the screen is light, 1/4 of it is piss yellow. This tablet came from the store today, so much for issues being fixed.

I've got the same thing. Plus, the microphone seems to have issues (sensitivity is so low, that it won't hear any "okay google" unless i really scream at it, for instance)! I would return it, but i am too afraid i might get an even worse unit.
Turns out HTC and Google really messed everything up with this one. I guess i was lucky to end up with a yellow-tinted Nexus 9 because, according to all people's reports, that might just be the best hardware version of it! With that in mind, I've never been so unsatisfied about a purchase before. I've always accepted some minor issues as i don't believe there are perfect devices, but i've never heard about so many different and major issues, especially for a tablet of this price. Not even to mention about the software issues, so far. This is just rediculous!
Huh ...
My new Sand model arrived with no issues out of the box ... excellent build quality, no issues with colors in the screen, and no bleeding backlight.
Where are y'all buying these things with all these issues?
I ordered mine directly off the play store.
I bought mine from Expansys (Europe). It's a pretty late batch (HTC4CC, which I think means December) therefore no back bending, no deep volume buttons and normal lightbleed for an LCD. But the fact that there are still issues and the quality of such an expensive tablet is questionable enough to make you stick with a yellowish screen, is really depressing. Anyway, I am really glad yours is perfect and I hope next batches manage to be as good as this tablet should be, but that doesn't change the fact that HTC and Google really dropped the ball on this one.

Your image is designed to exaggerate a non-problem into a problem.
Dark ambient = long exposure.
Also your picture isn't taken straight on. Its at an angle with the "bad" corner closest to the camera.

OK, so you're telling ME, the one who had the tablet in front of my face it didn't have light bleed and I purposefully 'designed' this picture to exaggerate a problem? Here's the bottom line and I could not give 2 flying ****s what you think I did or didn't do. My tablet had horrible HORRIBLE light bleed. How it looks in that picture is pretty damn close to how it looked in person while in a dark room. Period, end of story. You can check my post history going back to 2010 and see how many times I've complained about devices or *****ed about light bleed. Good luck finding any.
Im a member here to gain knowledge and help people when i can. I have enough devices to damn near fill a small bathtub, and theyre all the the same ones i bought day one never exchanged. In case you werent aware, most of us here are not ****ing retards and know lcds will have a SMALL amount of light bleed.. This is not a small amount, its an unacceptable amount. If You think I'm suddenly trying make **** up or make unwarranted complaints about a screen for no reason, you're flat out wrong.
For someone with the name doitright, you for damn sure aren't holding HTC to that standard.
So if take a picture of all my older tablets next to the nexus 9, they should all basically look the same then correct? By your logic they should all look similiar(according to you, this is a normal, acceptable amount that should be exhibited by all of my older tablets- including 2 nexus 7's) and the nexus 9 should look no worse than the rest correct? 100$ says they don't. Willing to put your money where your mouth is?

No, what I'm saying is that you are too picky and expecting something unreasonable from your hardware, which is working perfectly well. People like you who repeatedly send your hardware back under warranty for imaginary "problems" that are perfectly within the design specifications of the device **AND NOT EVEN CORRECTED** by the warranty replacement, cause the price of hardware to increase for the rest of us, because the cost of that warranty replacement is distributed to EVERYONE who buys that hardware.
I suggest that you return it and buy yourself a ROCK AND A CHISEL. At least if you complain about that, it won't increase the price for the rest of us.

Are you a ****ing moron? Let's try reading shall we?
1) I just said in the post you quoted I've NEVER in my life exchanged or returned any devices out of literally dozens. Obviously besides the nexus 9, but since you don't seem to fully read my previous comments in this thread I feel I need to point this out.
2) I haven't warrantied ONE nexus 9. I bought mine from best buy after launch and had until Jan 15 to exchange. So I did. If you actually READ my posts you'll see each one was returned for multiple issues, light bleed being at the back of my list of issues that concern me.
Would you keep a device that had speakers that didn't work? Yes or no? Would you keep a device that had volume buttons LITERALLY recessed inside the frame, making them completely unable to be pressed? Yes or no? Light bleed just happened to be another issue to top these major defects off.
So, since all these problems HAVE been noted in this thread, in fact I'm pretty sure they were in posts you quoted me on, you're telling me non-working speakers and unpressable buttons are both imaginary and within design specs?
Throw horrendous light bleed on top for icing on the cake.

Should I open my Office Depot white nexus 9

It has build date Nov 22, 2014 (HT4BN) This should be one of the newer builds, right?
But I'm also worried about light bleed and if Office Depot will allow me to return it. They claim to have a 100% satisfaction guarantee but I've never tried to use it.
I bought it in the recent online sale. But I'm concerned about getting involved in this light bleed mess.
why buy if you're not gonna open it. if it's 100% satisfaction then just return if you don't like it. no questions, nothing. if they ask why you don't need to answer or just say you're not satisfied. i've never had problems returning stuff.. except to bestbuy when they blacklisted me (but there's work arounds for that, lol).
I bought it on a whim, and then started over thinking it. Opening it now!
What the the hell did you do to get blacklisted? Hahaha
I can already see the light bleed in the lower left corner while it's installing upgrades. LOL

Yeah, that's exactly where I get the worst light bleed too. I also have a white N9 16GB that I ordered from Amazon Dec. 12 2014, S/N HT4BB. Mine also has the button problem.
BTW - where do you find the build date? I don't see it on the box or the tablet.

I've seen brand new N9's, including sand, that have recessed buttons and some "light bleed", and I've seen old ones that are nearly perfect. I've determined that there is no such thing as a magic date after which all Nexus 9's are flawless. I personally have a white 32gb from the first few weeks of production and it's nearly perfect. The volume up is a little more recessed than I'd like, but it works perfectly fine. The only time I can see this light bleed is during a reboot before the screen dims, or when installing updates when the screen is brighter than the max brightness with the OS booted up. I never notice it during regular use. My advice would be open the thing and love it. Cause it's an awesome tablet, even with it's quirks!

I completely agree. If you have lightbleed that is TOO much to handle, you really shouldnt have too much difficulty returning it. Lots of people had issues, they are expecting it by now.
Uh, you bought it to use it.... you should probably open it... I'm not sure what the alternative is for you.

BOE screen Inferior. Anyone have a good one?

I know this is not the place to discuss general issues with the phone but I signed up as these forums have the most and best discussions on the issues. I am on my 3rd Mate 20 Pro as the first two LG ones had the screen bleed issue.
Now I have a BOE screen but it looks absolute trash. It lacks brightness and contrast and has a pink tint towards the top and a green tint at the bottom when you view white pages. Also when I watch videos I get awful colour banding etc on gradients. Also I get odd tints etc whenever I look at the phone from almost any angle. I am so so so disappointed.
I'm just curious if anyone has a BOE screen that is as good as the original LG ones (minus screen bleed obviously) as I don't want to send this back if I'm going to get the same crappy screen back. I'm so frustrated and will never buy a Huawei product again.
I have a BOE Seems really great, nice vibrant colours, whites and Blacks are really good. Only issue I have is if you turn off the adaptive brightness the powergenie dims most Google and Facebook apps. But the last few days I have left the adaptive brightness on auto and it seems to not dim as much. I tend to push the brightness up a little bit though.
Something I have noticed, not related to the screen, is I occasionally hear a little click in the sound, I'm not sure what that is. Unless big brother is activating my microphone. ?

I must admit, I do notice the colour issue mostly in Chrome but it doesn't seem to be exclusive to it. Plus the colour banding issue is really bad on mine. For instance, at 1:28 on this video (https:// youtu.be/tO01J-M3g0U) the sky has awful banding and also an actual flickering. I guess I have a bad display. I just wonder if they will see it or just send it back. It's definetly there and anyone used to good screens would see it however my aging parents said there was nothing wrong with it so it isn't obvious to anyone not used to an OLED screen and I imagine they could easily say they see no issues. Ahhhh.
No issues with my BOE screen. If you secretly swapped it with a (good) LG I wouldn't notice.

BOE is the best much much better then LG super
boe screens are better imo, this lottery with LG is awful
Cheers guys. I must just have a defect BOE. It definitely doesn't look right at all.

Ooooooh interestingly that is exactly what mine looks like but reversed and guess what... Same build number. Did you get yours replaced with Huawei or a retailer?
Got my BOE 18B23, looks great - you might have a faulty one.
Looks like a faulty BOE screen...I examined mine obsessively within my 2 weeks return period and found no issues. It MIGHT be a bit less bright that LG, but I am comparing it with Youtube videos and Interweb pics, so it's a false call.
Happy so far.
Definitely looks like you have a defective BOE display. I got mine today (18B23) and it's great, at least compared to my old V30 it's much better.

I received a refund after an email to the Carphone Warehouse CEO. As the IMEI I had was from Huawei not CPW. The CPW have been absolutely fantastic to me.
I went yesterday hell bent on a pixel 3xl. But I was drawn toward the Mate 20 Pro. After much discussion with the manager I ended up walking out with a Mate 20 Pro, 18B26 and it absolutely perfect. It's what the phone should have been from the get go. Uniform, responsive, fast fingerprint scanner, sharp and vibrant.

I have EXACTLY the same problem as you. This is also my 3rd Mate 20 Pro. First was LG, with the green glow issue, that was visible only in dark room with brightness set to minimum and grey background (I am still mad why I returned it, because it was better than BOE) . My second device had a BOE screen with very very bad screen uniformity at low brightness. And now my third Mate has also BOE screen with the same problem as yours. Lower half of the display has a green tint and the upper half has a pink tint. I dont mind if the screen has a tint, because that can be "repaired" by tweaking color temperature. But this is super annoying. When you scroll on sites with white background you can see how it goes from green to pink tint. Otherwise screen is great and therefore I also have a concern about the next device that I might get as a replacement, as this is clearly a lottery now. I am probably going to wait until like a month and then try to get a replacement (I hope they will admit something is wrong with the display) . It is not really affecting the day-to-day usage of the device, it is just my eyes and heart is hurting when looking at the display. Maybe I am just too picky, but I expect from the device which costs 1k€ to be worthy of its price in every department, especially display.

This complete echos my device and my sentiments about the whole thing. For the money this device should not have the issues. It is a fact. This is my first Huawei device and I'm almost certain it will now be my last.
I also don't know which device I would buy, instead of Mate 20 Pro. Once you get used to this IR facial recognition, fingerprint scanner becomes almost useless. It works in every conditions and it's sometimes even too fast. I've been using Mate 9 for the last 2 years and it was super fast from the first to the last day. I got used to the EMUI, gestures are awesome! Oh, and I must not forget about the wide angle lens, it's great. I was thinking about the Note 9, the best display, performance wise also very good (not on pair with Kirin 980 though), camera also very good, fingerprint scanner on the back with facial recognition that is significantly slower and on top of that it's still Samsung, which means that it will get very slow in just a year from buying it (it's also almost 100€ more in my country). Another alternative is OnePlus 6T, display is good, performance it's excellent, software is the best right now, the cameras are on pair with the Note 9, but it lacks wireless charging, IP rating, facial recognition depends only on camera (it doesn't work in the dark) and I can't get it from my carrier. Mate 20 Pro is also the King when it comes to the battery life! So from my point of view, there are no real alternatives to the Mate 20 Pro and I really don't know what to do. Part of me wants to get a replacement ASAP (I am scared of that also), but the other part wants to get something else, because this is going nowhere.
I think a lot of the XDA reports about the LG screens being defective were phony and were made to create mischief and discourage people from buying this phone.
When the gluegate reports started coming in on XDA easily 70% were from XDA accounts that were new and were opened specifically to report supposedly defective screens. How could anybody not have found that suspicious?
The supposed screen bleed issue is a joke. People were comparing the folded OLED on the Mate 20 Pro with Samsung phone screens that don't have folded OLED displays. Obviously the results are going to be different because they are not the same kind of displays. It is 100% normal to have bleed on the edges with a folded OLED display and it is also normal for the edges of the display to look lighter when doing the "uniformity test" that people were told proved the displays were defective.
If you go into the display settings it takes less than 10 seconds to make it appear that your screen has "gone hulk" and take a screenshot.
I have a UK Mate 20 Pro that was preordered before launch. It has an LG display from the initial batch that multiple XDA members claim were 100% defective. The display looks great and is not defective in any way.
A few weeks ago I purchased a 256GB global version and planned to upgrade. But that phone had a BOE display that was very inferior to the LG one so I ended up returning it. The BOE screen had washed out colors and was noticibly less bright than the LG display which is the reason people don't see screen bleed at the edges. Pixel response was also slower than the LG display.
A lot of people who participated in a "screen lottery" and kept returning M20P phones until they got one with a BOE display ultimately found that those displays had inferior color and brightness to the LG display.
I'm pretty certain there was nothing wrong with the phone you returned. Unfortunately I have seen 3 M20P phones with BOE displays and all 3 had washed out colors compared to the LG display.
