Who's made the switch from the M8? - AT&T HTC One (M9)

My current phone is the M8 and I have the opportunity to perhaps get a M9 (either Dev or unlocked), but I'm not certain whether it is worth it to make the move seeing the the only real change I see with the phone is the larger camera and expandable storage space. So if there is anyone who's made the move, was it worth it?

It pretty much feels the same for the average user probably. I'm a video freak (netflix mostly), i spent hours watching TV series on my phone. So the things I've noticed that makes me say WOW, have been, the screen (things looks brighter, cleaner, dunno how to put it in words, you have to see it to get, ive gotten comments about it from friends whove seen it up close), the battery life (its improve about 3 maybe 4 more hours than the M8 used to last watching the same amount of netflix on LTE), and of course, sound, its the thing im loving the most, Dobly sounds wayyy better than beats or harman kardon.

I'm coming from a LG g3 and I love this phone much more... My wife has the M8 and she even held the phone and played with it, and made comments how she does feel a difference... It's subtle but it is there... She can't wait to upgrade from her M8... I guess your best bet is to go to the store and spend airtime time with it to see if you feel a difference... Hope this helps...

I switched from the At&t M8 to the Developer Edition M9.
My DE M9 came n today and I love it. ATM I still don't regret buying the M9.

I just got mine today. I'm pleasantly surprised. HTC did a great job. I hoped for more but it is still great.

I've read a few reviews the has the M9 as just meh to the Galaxy 6 and especially to what's coming out on the E9 and M9+. The notion is that it doesn't feel like a flagship phone anymore. Any thoughts?

It's hard to balance that it's a new phone yet so similar to last years model. You get a wow from the S6 because it's so different and it is a great phone. I have both and I'm putting them through the paces. I just got the M9 today so I'll with hold judgement. It definitely feels like a flagship period. Its not unique but it is better than the M8.
I have the M8 here and I feel and notice a difference. Not as big of one that I would have liked though. I have to test the camera, everyone says its bad so I'll judge that myself.

I got my M9 Developers Edition on the 1st and it is must have upgrade from the M7 and a OK upgrade from an M8 (I've had all 3)
I sold my M8 for the M9 and i don't regret it a bit if that tells you anything.
As for the Camera their is a photos thread here with a bunch of camera guys explaining and setting up a manual camera mode that fixes almost all the camera faults of the M9. It really takes about 5 seconds to setup and your pictures are almost instantly better.
I use these settings and my Camera is awesome
Open the camera click the 3dot in the top left
choose ISO 200
EV +0
AWB
click the Gear and set
Resolution - Medium (16:9)
Image Adjustments
contrast +.05
Saturation +.05
Sharpness -2.0 or -1.5
go back to the top of the settings and Save custom camera (i named it ISO 200 Medium)
That should get you started ..another tip is to let the phone auto focus (don't touch the screen to focus)
Another Tip check/clean the camera lens for finger prints before you began shooting ( i learned this the hard way

as far as resale value the Developers Edition usually brings a few more bucks.
the phones are the same
Unlocked = BS_US001 > bootloader comes locked
Developer Edition = BS_US002 > bootloader comes already unlocked
Both are carrier Unlocked

Flashing a rom won't remove the bloatware. It's actually in its own partition now. A rom will also not get OTA updates, like a full conversion will

I got mine, you got yours? Initial Thoughts . . .

I'm loving this bad boy so far. The size is absolutely perfect and fits in my hand like a glove.
Physical/ Build Quality
It actually looks and feels more like the OG Inc then the Inc2. Slightly narrower then the Inc2 but a tad longer and has the same red highlighted speaker above the screen as the OG Inc. It also feels lighter then the Inc2 and, it feels more solid than any HTC to date. The back battery cover doesn't make that annoying squeak and fits tightly . :good:
Camera
Although this doesn't have the same imaging software as the ONE series, it takes pictures amazingly fast. Click, click, click -one right after another.
Beats Audio
Gimmick or not, Music sounds noticeably better on this device than on the Inc2. I'm playing the same FLAC HD files off the same SD card.
Cons
Looks like they did away with the FriendStream widget ?! There's a Twitter HTC widget but no HTC widget for Facebook. Only the totally lame FaceBook widget that comes with the FaceBook app. I like having the Twitter and Facebook feeds combined in the FriendStream widget. Bummer . . .
Price
I paid $106.99 (including tax) for the device as a "Buddy Upgrade" on my company's business account. They applied the $50 rebate directly to the purchase.
I haven't gotten one yet but I'm pissed that, at least according to the website, the phone isn't global ready. WTF?? The DINC 2 was global ready right? And this chip supposedly has GSM capabilities built in. So why not make it global ready from day one?
Verizon is getting on my last nerve...first they pass on the One series and put out this phone with inferior specs, then they jerk everyone around waiting for the release so they can screw us on the plan, then they don't make it global ready when the hardware clearly supports it. I don't get it. I'm going the europe next month and was looking forward to using the phone over there.
Verzion already has said they will send out a software update to make it globally complient in very near future. It has the hardware to support it inside of it.
Yeah, I didn't buy one either for the above reason. They told me in the store today it wasn't gsm capable at the moment.

LOL...with Verizon the very near future could be a year from now.
And by the way, is it just a coincidence that they send out this OTA to the original DINC that is throwing everyone's phone into a constant reboot loop a week before the new DINC 4G comes out? The timing is a little suspicious. I get the stupid notification like every half hour, hoping the thing will eventually just go away.

So far I love it. I wanted a 4g phone that wasn't as big as a surf board. I don't need a huge screen as I will never watch TV or anything on it so this is perfect.

Did anyone try the back door method the rezound has? This is one of the features I was wanting as well. Here is how the Rezound works.
(*#*#4636#*#* in dialer, then phone information) there is a option for "Global Mode" and ones for "WCDMA Only" and "GSM Only"

I think you have to pre-pay for data from verizon before you go right? Like $25/100 mb. So they wouldn't care that you went in and turned on global mode yourself?

Was a longtime user of several phones, including Dinc2, and Rezound.
Picked up the 4g lte today, and I gotta say from the limited time I have with it, I am enjoying it. The biggest plus so far is the nice sharp screen. In fact, I like it more than the rezound's 720 p screen because this one is NOT scaled, so everything looks nice and crisp, and the fonts aren't too big.
Sense 4 on this phone seems pretty snappy and smooth, minimal if any lag on certain scrolls, but they are rare. Haven't made phone calls yet. 4g (here in LA county) is variable in terms of speed... from 300 KB/sec to 1.1 MB/sec. I think that is maybe more related to network congestion.
Form factor of the phone is basically the same as the Dinc2, which is a good thing, but I find this one to be easier to hold in my hands, with softer edges. Also, buttons are easier to press than the Dinc2, which is a plus. Battery door easy to open, and doesn't have flex/creaking. Another nice feature is that the SIM tray and SD card tray are both on the side of the phone, so you don't have to remove the battery to access anything, only the back cover.
All in all, I am pleased so far. Hope to continue the enjoyment, and hopefully will see some nice interest in this phone. Only question remaining is whether the bootloader will be unlocked (either by HTCdev, or otherwise). Honestly, though, Sense 4 on this phone is pretty snappy and quick, so I can overlook this even if we don't get AOSP. But nothing wrong with more options, of course, thanks to any and all devs who know how to cook roms, because I sure don't know how to.
Thanks for reading!

I understand that you initial posters have your shiny, new phone that you paid for, so please don't flame me for offering what the OP suggested, ie: initial thoughts.
I used the phone briefly in the Verizon store today. I have lots of experience with Sense, having used and rooted both a Droid Incredible and an HTC Rezound. That said, I should state that my bias leans toward Senseless and ASOP roms.
Compared to my Rezound running ConRom, I found the Incredible 4G on Sense 4 to be laggy when it came to screen transitions, ie: opening/closing the market, updating apps, transitioning between Sense home screens, etc. I'm not one of those "The Rezound is the best Android phone out" guys either. I was honestly hoping that this phone would be a significant upgrade over the Rezound. If I still had the ability to keep unlimited data and burn my existing upgrade, my choice would still be either the Rezound or the Galaxy Nexus.
I am envious of the Incredible 4G due to it's form-factor. It's feels great in the hand, light but not too light, and has the same nice rubberized-texture that the Inc 2 and Rezound have.

I wasn't running ComRom on my Rezound but so far my experience has been the exact opposite. The Incdreble 4G has had no lag like the Rezound does. Plus, Sense 4 runs circles around the Rezounds version of Sense.
Besides, It's hardly a fair comparison to pit a custom ROM against stock anything.

Global mode is something different. What I am talking about is buying a prepaid sim overseas or using it with t-mobile/att&t. The command doesn't work because Verizon disabled it but if you download the Thunderbolt LTE on/off app in the play store you can change it to GSM only. The options are there so the phone is capable like everyone said. I just got back from receiving the phone and the app works in switching to 3G. The sim for this phone is now a micro-sim so for someone to test they would need to trim a regular sim and put it in. This settings works for voice only. To send SMS and MMS, we need a dev to fix the ROM. That's how they did it with the Rezound. Or we wait for Verizon to enable all the functionality.
So far I am liking the phone. It's more like the original incredible than the incredible 2.

Exchanged for GS3

Not that anyone cares, but I'm wondering if I'm one of the few that purchased a dinc 4g on release day and later exchanged for a gs3. After having the dinc 4g for a little over a week, I just felt that it had VERY little of anything extra over the original dinc that I was carrying, and the excitement really faded quickly.
I'm sure pretty soon I'll grow really tiresome of touchwiz and the extra gimmicky samsung stuff on the phone and will take some time to learn how to root and mod the phone.

Sure there is not much difference between the orig dinc and the inc4g, but I would say there is even less difference between the inc4g and the SG3.
They are running the same CPU and GPU. The cameras are different hardware but I think they are about the same. Inc4g seems to have a better lens but the SG3 MAY have a better sensor/chip.
I guess it depends on opinion.
I would say if you like a larger screen and/or TouchWiz, the the GS3 is the right phone. If you like a smaller screen and/or sense, than the Inc4g is the right phone. Otherwise I don't see much else to compare.

Exactly, I sold my Rezound and used my upgrade on this phone because it has a 4' display and I don't see Verizon matching anything close to that soon. I am in high hopes that HTC comes out with a new phone that isn't large than 4.3
any larger than 4.3' is no longer a phone to me. and I personally cannot use it.

im weird with screen sizes: 4.0 is perfect for me phone wise...but...i could see myself getting a note sized device as a hybrid so i dont need to have a tablet too
would get annoyed when using it to actually talk on the phone, but id deal w/ the trade off
I was considering doing this exchange in OP but i can't stand physical keys. Only majpr gripe with inc4g is that they made the screen narrower and taller instead of keeping the same ratio, but o understand this is due to qhd resolution.
Oh, and creaky battery cover bothers me too.

The Droid Incredible 4G LTE is a great phone. It's the perfect form factor at only 4 inches with a nice-sized and nice-looking display. 1GB of RAM is the current standard, which it has, and it supports microSD cards, which is no longer the standard but should still be. It runs Ice Cream Sandwich stock, and we're about to have S-OFF so we can install anything we want on it. I never lose connection to the network, and Wi-Fi works great at a decent range. There's nothing currently available that I would take over this phone.

I would not say it is outdated. However, how much you like it will depend on what you want in a phone. I bought the Dinc4g on release day and with the exception for no root (yet), I am happy with it.
The rest of my family have the Rezound. This phone is smoother, faster and smaller. All plusses for me. I want the 4" screen. They like the Rezound's bigger screen, but their battery life is awful.
With root right around the corner, this phone promises to be even better.

I went from a T-Bolt on VZW, to Sensation on TMOus and back to a DINC4 on VZW.
I was scared about speed and battery coming from those two phones.
Within a few days that was laid to rest.
Even with the factory bloat, it is faster and the battery lasts longer.
I too, coming from two prior 4.3 inch screen phones, like this form factor better than it's larger counterparts.
Very, very happy we made the switch.
Excited about S-Off, but this phone is a great device for me. I only want S-OFF to remove bloatware to be honest...and to get rid of the WiFi Nag.
Otherwise, out of the box this phone's a winner.

Lol! I agree with all the comments. Great phone. Battery life is ok. Aside from bloatware and wifi symbol in your face, the only other slightly down side is lacking range of cases but Otterbox and me became friends on this model so I can't complain. Otherwise, out of the box this phone's a winner.

You can disable almost all the bloat non-rooted....
Essentially its exactly like freezing in titanium backup except its a feature of stock android now. Very cool.

I too came from the Rezound as I sold mine, then bought this phone on my two year contract.
I love the size of this phone, it's perfect, IMO.
The INC2 is the same size 4', but this phone is more of a candy bar shape, much like the INC1, which I prefer.
As much as I feel it may be weird not being able to pull the battery when needed, I wish that this phone was made like the One Series phones, specifically the OneS, I love the build quality on the One S.
The Inc4 I use with no case and no screen protector and I don't feel nervous with it so it is built pretty nice, but IMO the INC2 is a bit more solid, especially the away the back door was on the INC2, on the INC4 it's pretty easy and squeaks a bit due to this. Nothing that was going to keep me from buying this phone though
I'll be on this phone for two years. I'll most likely end up using my brothers upgrade for the Incredible DIX and let him take my next upgrade. but I'll be on the Inc4 mainly even so as I couldn't use a 5' phone for a daily, it'll pretty much be my tablet, lmao.

[Q] HTC One M8 over SGS5

Well, guys and girls I want to hear from you why to get (or not) HTC One M8 over SGS5 as owners of that first phone. I have two weeks to decide, but at that point I'm not sure which one to pick.
Currently I have SGS3, stock rooted, unlocked + Xposed tweaks, running TSF Launcher.
What I'm looking for? Ability to root, unlock and customize little bit stock ROM using Xposed. Launcher, probably, I will replace with TSF anyway.
Thanks for any feedback
Well I'll tell you.. Having come from two galaxy phones this phone is a welcome treat. Fast and flawless. Without question the best smart phone I have ever owned.. You can't trip up the phone. After about a week of getting used to it you will never look back.
Good luck

Had the sGS3 and sGS4 in the past. Got the m8 and nothing compares to it. Just an awesome phone. Only thing I miss from my Galaxy is the Omoled screen. Black colors were black. More vibrant the colors too. But this screen is great too. The built quality is amazing. And I pretty much had enough with the Galaxys home button. Tap to wake in the HTC One m8 works great. Only wish the power button was on the right side below the volume rocker. Would be easier to press to lock the phone. But hey, at least they moved from the top left side to the top right. Easier to rich then before (if you are a righty of course). GO WITH THE HTC ONE m8. No regrets.

From what I hear, the AT&T GS5 has root now, so the rest will follow (if not possible already). So this shouldn't be much of a factor in your decision.
Posting in the M8 forum, you likely won't get a very objective result.
Also, there is a related thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2780334
Of course, the mention of lack of root for the GS5 is not longer relevant. But you will see various opinions comparing the 2 phones, reasons (aside from root) why we picked the M8, etc.
Personally, the M8 just looks and feels much better designed and built. The GS5 isn't "bad". If HTC didn't exist, I'd probably think the GS5 was pretty nice. But of course, that isn't the case, and HTC simply has higher end physical design. I also love the front facing speakers and the audio quality you get from them. Maybe not relevant for everyone. But its one of the reasons I picked the M8, and quite happy I made that decision.
Few more questions related to M8:
- What about not removable battery - is an issue there? I have often removed battery in my SGS3 do too boot issues after flashing or just freezes.
- Does Xposed framework works properly on M8? For an example GravityBox has big incompatibility with SGS3 stock ROM.
Thanks

What I have heard that is not "real" root. Some files are still in read mode only.

Can't comment on that, as I haven't been following closely. If that is the case, then it may still be a consideration in your purchase choice.

1) No, lack of removable battery (for sake of doing a "battery pull") is not an issue. Every device without a user accessible battery has some button combo hardwired to reboot the phone, same as a battery pull. On the M8, you hold power and vol up buttons until the phone restarts.
2) Can't say about GravityBox in particular. But I've used other Xposed modules, and everything works fine AFAIK.
I am telling you why you should buy the Galaxy S5.
First of all, it isn't true that the HTC One M8 has a much better build quality. It is very slippery and you will find yourself dropping it a lot if you don't put a case on. But if you buy a case, what's the point of having a aluminum phone?
I have the gold variant of the Galaxy S5 and I think it is the best color for this phone. It doesn't look like a band aid or whatever they call it. Actuall, it is actually like a light gold color and when you put the phone in direct sunlight it looks more like Silver, which looks beautiful.
Also, the battery is noticeably better on the Galaxy S5, especially with Ultra Power Saving Mode where the display turns black and white. Also, you can replace the batteries if you want.
Also, water resitant capabilities. I'm coming from a Galaxy S3 and I never thought water resistant capabilities would be useful but now that I am on vacation, it is very useful. I've taken the phone inside the pool many times and also those water splashes from people jumping into the pool won't be a problem for your phone.
Root? My phone is already rooted and I have already all the apps I need. I don't plan on switching to a custom ROM because the performance is just amazing. There is no lag whatsoever and this comes from someone who hated the Galaxy S3 awful performance.
The camera, there is no comparison. 16 MP vs dual 4 MP? Pixels are not everything, but the detail you will get with the Galaxy S5 camera is unparalleled.

So how it looks that in a M8 case? Does root and SIM unlock is not complicated/time consuming? Long time ago my wife had HTC Aria and to root it and SIM unlock was a pain

I have heard that root is a partial root. Two persons confirmed. They are lurkers here in XDA forums, but know the stuff. Also have heard it works only on kernel builds before June. No clue if new phones have another kernel build.

Fair points. However, M8 camera wins in low light (as its intended). Low light being just about anything but outdoors in daytime. Depends on how you personally use your camera. But many (probably most) my pics are indoors.

I personally thought it was easy. Many coming from Samsung devices will complain its "more complicated".
With any new device and new manufacturer, things will be different and there will be a learning curve.
I'm guessing it might take you an hour or 2 to unlock the bootloader, install custom recovery, s-off and SIM unlock. I am the father of a 3 year old child, not much free time, and still got it all done 1 day after I bought the phone.
In order to keep the thread count down, especially on something that is not specifically about the M8 (this thread is just as much about the S5, which you have an identical thread in that forum), I am closing this.
You can continue the discussion here though:

And get lots more opinions on the matter.
Good luck with your purchase! :good:

At this moment, to buy it or not?

I saw the sprint g3 @ $100 renewing contract and it got me tempted.
But i'm not 100% sure, i have a nexus 5 since release day, and i love it. Great screen, smooth experienced, a lot of develoment, but theres some not so great stuff like camera and battery, there good but not great.
I instantly fall in love with the look of g3, small bezels, back buttons, but reading around about lag, no so great development. its is worth it?

It's been an amazing phone so far. I haven't experienced any lag at all! Once the bootloader is unlocked, I guarantee development will be going strong!
I'm very stoked on mine. Bootloader unlock will make this phone super fly but it's already awesome. I had the htc m8 and custom roms and all but I don't miss it even a bit.
To return to Android from an iPhone 5 to this phone really makes me thing why did I change. This phone is the best out there right now. I can usually go 36 hours without charging, and I use my phone a ton. So yes it is worth it. The Ultra HD is pretty bad ass too.
I wouldn't say the phone is perfect, but compared to the Galaxy S5 and the HTC One M8, I'd say it's right there. It's a matter of what's important to you. Obviously if you want forward facing speaking, this phone can't do that. But if you want an amazing screen, a bit more size and a very smooth/solid experience. This phone is great.

Thanks all, it got me tempted to buy it, i was thinking on the note 4, but probably would be $300-350 and I don't like touchwiz and all the bloat plus knox.
I would buy nexus 6 unlock (hopefully it comes to sprint again) and the lg g3 looks like a nice toy to play around in the mean time.

I mean, the big thing is...we don't have an Unlock yet and can't do custom ROMs. But this phone is definitely better stock than Samsung phones.
The Note 4 does look pretty good though, if it's quick to be unlocked/rooted/such it might be really nice since you can uninstall the bloat.

Well you can uninstall bloat with root; don't need a bootloader for that (although it would be safer) unless you're just saying that the problem with TW vs LG is the bloat on TW is worse.

Yeah mostly meant TW bloat is a lot worse. Also I'm a little finicky about uninstalling bloat with just root, I know some people are doing that and using Xposed and what not. I'm just cautious.

I'm with ya on removing bloat and all that other stuff. Only thing I want is to root and activate the built in hotspot. On the S5 it was very simple and works great. Still researching it on the G3 Sprint.
Well I tried to buy it from Amazon, but Sprint restricted them, and they cant ship it to Puerto Rico, I sent my wife to Radio Shack (they always gave me better price than sprint retails or corporate) where they listed at $99, and they told my wife its a 16gb model. Does sprint 16gb/2gb really exist? I though they only have the 32gb model.
I was considering this phone, but if sprint is going to make this difficult, hello t-mobile.
I went monday to radio shack, they guy told they didn't have the lg g3 (this guys doesn't even know what they sell?. I told him to look in the computer, and he found it, 32gb titanuim @ $99.
Its a beast phone, I didn't remember all the bloat those non google phone have. I rooted, disabled some crappy app, nova launcher, ART and everething looks great so far.
Glad to hear you got the g3.
I'd back of from it til the boot loader is unlocked
Sent from my LGLS990 using XDA Premium HD app
I have my nexus 5 and waiting for the 6, so this one with locked bootloader don't bother too much, at least its rooted to block ads. I prefer paying for a good apps without ads than a free one with ads, also hate browsing on the webs with ads everywhere. Only i would miss is a clean rom if the bootlocker doesnt get unlocked.

Easiest root ever. Could not believe it. Now if only we could get a recovery and some real development for this phone.
FYI, it has been absolutely great and I don't know why it doesn't get more attention. Very happy I bought it and saved enough money over a Note 4 that I'm going to buy a smartwatch.
