[Q] New battery drain issue due to Bluetooth - Samsung Gear S

I've been using my Gear S in combination with a Note Edge since February 2, and the battery life was good (typically 50% or so at the end of the day). About two weeks ago the Gear S started draining really fast, running out of battery before my day was over. As part of my troubleshooting, I factory reset both the Gear S and the Note Edge, and ran several tests with and without Bluetooth and 3G (I left GPS and WiFi off all the time). The only thing that is causing the rapid battery drain is the Bluetooth connection to the phone (i.e., connected remotely via 3G = great battery life; connected via Bluetooth = crappy-ass battery life).
Is anyone else experiencing this particular scenario (Bluetooth connection recently starting to drain your battery)?
Thanks for any help you may provide.

Have you installed any new apps that could cause this and it functions only on Bluetooth? I had wearable widgets and clock which were not even active but seemed to cause battery drain and slowness.

No, I haven't installed any apps on the Gear S since I reset it. It would be nice to have a battery monitoring app.

OK, maybe the charger is different and the battery is not being charged at full power..

The battery gets charged to 100% using the original power supply and charging cradle. And like I said before, the watch lasts forever when connected via 3G, so it can't be a battery issue. I was thinking it was a bad Gear Manager update, but then a lot of people would be having the same issue.

There are many reports of BT battery drain after recent Gear Manager update (a month or two ago). Some solved it by re-install the Gear Manager. Not everyone is affected.

I guess you can count me as one of the affected ones. Reinstalling Gear Manager is not doing diddly squat. I ran another test: no apps whatsoever, the only variable being the connection to the phone via Bluetooth. 45% over 5.5 hours during the night, with Do Not Disturb on. Balls...

Here's what I've found being with a Gear since V1 was first released. Gear Manager is a PIA and when updates to it or the device occur flaky things can happen. Whenever I update either I always do the following in the order shown:
Unpair the Gear in BT settings so it's no longer a connectable BT device
Hard reset the Gear by long pressing the power button and doing a recovery
In application manager on my phone I go through each Gear-related Samsung and/or third party app installed and delete it making sure the core Gear Manager app is the last uninstalled. Some of the secondary Gear apps come back after they're are installed but get removed with the removal of the core Gear App at the end
Reinstall Gear Manager from Samsung Apps on my phone and go through the whole pairing process again with the Gear being seen by the phone and the phone being seen by the Gear as "virgin."
Even though my G-S was virgin, I set it up enough to take the AT&T update and once it was updated went through all the steps above.
I've had no issues like call forwarding not working, connections are fantastic, and battery life seems reasonable (I've had the G-S less than a week so don't have anything to compare it to). I never had some of the other issues people reported on the Gear I either.

The main difference I would think between connecting via BT and 3G would be the sync of the notifications - on BT it would be synchronous and trying to get all notifications and on 3G the phone just pushes notifications and possibly the watch is not waiting for them.. maybe check the application list in Gear manager to see if any app could be sending a lot of notifications or continuously running..

I recently just did a factory reset on both the Gear S and the Note 4. I used to have around 300 apps that would auto download every time I logged into my Google account. I deleted my Google back up so those apps wouldn't download again. I don't have nearly as many apps on both devices and my battery life has improved dramatically. The more apps you have, the more your battery drains. It doesn't matter if its a smartwatch or a phone.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I had no apps installed on the watch at all, and I only had notifications turned on for texts. Since I had just factory reset the Note Edge, it was also a fresh installation of Gear Manager, and only one Google account set up on the phone - no other apps. So, empty phone, empty watch, and the battery was still draining like crazy when connected via Bluetooth. Then all of a sudden, it fixed itself, without me doing anything. No new version of the Manager, no changing of settings, nothing.
I'm glad it's fixed, but it's bugging me that I have no clue how it got fixed. I've been installing apps on the phone, and everything is still OK. Now I'm going to install apps on the watch, and I have a feeling it'll all be OK with that too.

I have had the same issue and in fact the battery drains fast if gear s bluetooth is on even without it being connected, I have factory reset it and reinstalled gear manager with almost zero apps connected and still get fast drainage, battery dies in less than 3 hours, no idea what to do next apart from Samsung warranty

[Q] Insane battery drain after gingerbread update, please advise

Hi, just updated to 2.3.3 stock rom, no flash, using the standard LG upgrade software, from v10q (I believe) to v20g.
I installed no new apps, didn't change a thing on my phone, but now my battery drains in 12h of no use, screen off.
Battery information says the phone never goes to sleep anymore, the blue bar is continuous.
I've tried shutting down running apps using both the phone's built in app manager and Advanced Task Killer, doesn't change a thing.
Searching the forums, I've found people with battery drain, but never the same issue or solution so I'm hoping someone might know something more on my specific situation.
Here's how I use my phone and what apps I generally have running:
Audio Manager Console and Advanced Task Killer are always running, I keep data off most of the time, and turn it on when I use it occasionally (usually no more than a few minutes at a time), no wi-fi, most of the phone usage comes from Think Free Office (at least since I upgraded 2 days ago) and a few minutes of calls. Brightness is always on min.
This is mostly how I generally use my phone all the time (throw in a couple of hours a day of Bluetooth music using the default music player, but this hasn't been the case since the update) and I used to recharge every 2-3 days. Now it's 2 times a day.
Before the upgrade my phone would barely burn any battery in idle (maybe 1-2% during the 12 hours, as opposed to 94% as it currently does)
Battery health seems fine, temperature is around 20-25C
What can I do?

Gear Manager Update Today

Good evening all!
Am I the only one that received a Gear Manager Update today?
I received something earlier today but I can't see any change in the software version number.
Alex
All you buddayyyy
Yes, it is updated for me.
I got the update too but have not noticed any differences.
According to change log, it is updated to support Gear Circle.

where you downloaded the app.
I also got today. Noticed some changes:
1. While calling, Mute button is added to the main screen and volume slider as well
2. In drop down menu, a different icon is shown when connected to Bluetooth or remote connection via phone
3. Battery life improved, me thinks.
4. Auto Call forwarding added to Call Menu
5. Smoother Interface
Adding tasks is still not supported.

Yup, but i have noticed when I owned the Galaxy Gear and the gear 2 that some Gear manager updates would change things like this and even Svoice! Sometimes even the vibration would change on the gear 2.... Remember this watch is also an extension of your phone. Most of the watches services and apps are running on your phone first.
But none of what Akram posted occurred without a firmware updated. I noticed zero changes on my watch. So, I think he is just confused this thread as talking of Gear firmware update which is not even new for most of us (there is a day-one update and that's about it).

i do, also the battery usage is a littel better. I'm normally down to 81% by now and its sitting at 93 with heavy usage.
I have seen good days and bad days on battery life. So, today it appears to be the bad day for me. Already at 81% 1 hour after took off the charger with BT connection. So, no, the update to Gear Manager doesn't change anything for me for battery life.
If the app update causes the phone connection to the device to draw less power from the device (less poling for notifications, updating time and better location management) I could see how it could have an affect on the Gear S battery life ... I haven't noticed any differences though.
Don't know if it happenedwith this update, but I see a watch face that is very cool and more features on it, #of steps, readable date, weather, etc.
Keep it coming samsung!
The update appears to have broken having apps open automatically (or by touching Open app on device) when a notification pops up on your watch. This has happened with previous updates then the next update fixes that issue and now this one broke it again. To use this function, you need to have Smart relay checked in Notifications in the Gear Manager.

Erratic behaving Z3v (screen won't turn on sometimes, receive texts hours later)

The problems started today.
-When I push the power button sometimes the screen will not turn on. When I hold the power button I can hear the sound of the power menu pop up so I know the device is receiving the signal from the power button.
-I am receiving texts very late or not at all. I just got a message my friend sent like 8 hours ago.
-The device is also a little laggy sometimes, and certain things, like the play store will not load.
-I can't turn on airplane mode
I re-flashed it with the original firmware (while keeping my data intact) and this made no change. I have installed some new apps recently, but this was several days before the issues started. I have since installed those apps and no change
Tomorrow I plan to get a new sim card, but does anyone have any other ideas?
I recently had a similar problem with my z3v. I had a wakelock from Google services that was making my processor use almost 70% constantly and would drain battery in like 3 hours. Mine turned out to be Google calendar sync. My phone would lag so hard it couldn't run widgets or anything. Check your battery in settings and see if something has a high percentage. The screen should be the highest usage by a large margin.

I turned off auto-sync and no change. The screen was the largest use followed by the playstore which had be trying to start since I tried to open it.
My playstore was messed up and would not open while this was going on. It just stayed white and if I locked the screen it took 5 mins to unlock. I also have root and used wakelock detector. I used cpu z to see if I had high processor usage.
You can try ur phone in ultra stamina and see how it acts as well for troubleshooting.

Turns out the verizon cloud backs up text messages as well so that's what I needed. I ended up just doing a factory reset of the phone, seems like all is good now. I didn't think it was going to work since I put new firmware on it and nothing changed. It seems we had the same type of problem though. I did run the phone in safe mode with no improvement, but not ultra stamina. How did you end up fixing the problem?
My husband's phone started having basically the same issues out of the blue yesterday as well. It's not rooted or anything and he hasn't downloaded any apps or anything in weeks. Folks at Verizon store have no idea what's going on. We're about to try a factory reset. We also noticed the play store was burning a lot of battery even though he hadn't tried to open it or use it for several days at least, and can't get it to open now.
Try clearing play store "data" and "cache" through app manager.
This is a disaster, I've been trying forever to restore my text messages from the verizon cloud. Keeps failing after transferring less than 20 percent (different amount each time)

Amazfit 2 Stratos battery issues - suspect software bug - reset daily helps

Hi, i have a new Amazfit 2 Stratos with official international firmware US FW (2.3.2.7) and noticed cases where the battery would rapidly drain within hours, for example I would go to sleep with 60% battery and 6-7 hours later it would be on 5%...
I then noticed that if i reset the device, the rapid battery drain would stop, for example i noticed a rapid drain of 10 % an hour, so i reset the device and it stopped draining the battery...
Which made me think there is a stuck process or some firmware issue that keeps draining the battery, and I now reset my device every morning which makes it lasts days.
Anyone else noticing battery drain issues?
Having the same issue. What watch face are you using? I'm trying to narrow down the issue.
I've noticed the same after converting from Chinese to US. I'm thinking it might be caused by WiFi (or something using it) as it didn't start happening until I added my network.
...
try to install Task Manager and you can kill some processes which are maybe draining your battery. I use it as i have plenty of apps there.
I found the cause - the data sync. Each time you access the app on your phone, it syncs the data.
When you disable the wifi/data connection on your cell and access the app (while watch is paired), it tries to sync and fails. Problem is that it seems to be stuck in a loop until data connection is available and by then the battery depletes rapidly.
Solution - don't access the app while there is no connection in your phone to wifi/data.
Not sure if this is the only case when the watch syncs data - it might be syncing it automatically each day at a specific time - will post more info if i find out.
I also don't know if this bug is caused by the new firmware or not because i received the watch only last week and immediately updated to the new version based on the notification in the app.
It seems there is also a difference in battery use when using different watch faces. For example, I've observed that a watch face with no temperature will consume less battery than with a watch face with a temperature reading.
Anyone with similar experience?
I've bought an Amazfit Pace that sufered from same issue, te battery starts to drain all the way down in a couple of hours, so i returned it and decided to buy the Stratos, and guess what?
I have exact the same issue.
Tryed some things and i think the cause is related with smartphone bluetooth, in my case OnePlus 5T bluetooth.
If i desconnect smartphone bluethoot it stops draining, if i put it on again it starts draining again, if restart smartphone it stays good until it happen again next day or so.
Problem with battery discharge Amazfit 2
Hi, I also have a battery discharge problem. The watch battery will start to discharge quickly when I turn on the amazfit application on my phone. When the phone is restarted and I do not go to the Amazfit application, the watch connects everything works and the flashlight is ok, I turn on the application amazfit and the torch goes down. Tonight I put the plane on the phone and plugged in only the bluetooth and my watch was discharged in the morning. The red bar at the bottom of the amazfit app only appears when I'm not connected to the internet, I'm connected all the time. I have amazfit 2 China, recorded by Rom 2.0.14.0, Amazfit Watch 3.0.0 and HUAWEI Mate 10 lite
So it has exactly the same bug as the first one... (and I have it on my wrist). Well time to go back to regular (but expensive for nothing) watches
You may want to check this post/thread:

Basically what usually cause these problems are wither data sync issues or a problem with Bluetooth/WiFi.

I noticed the same issue with my pace on my OP5 after à phone update. Tried to reset, pair un pair still the same.
Issue was removed after oxygenos 5.1.0 but immediately back after last oxos 5.1.1
To move on I paires the watch to my xiaomi mi5 on global stable rom Android 7, all is fine.
Seems many phones are bt broken with oreo.

I think too, that this is some sync related issue. If I check the watch data in the Amazfit app, then the watch starts to drain with 2-3% per hour. However if I exit the app and turn off Bluetooth on the phone till the notification icon and the watch show disconnected and then turn back BT to get the watch connected again, the battery consumption goes back to normal.
Opening the app again starts the battery drain issue again.
I wrote it already in another thread here, I own an Amazfit Pace, of course with battery drain issues. So I tested a bit. When the phoneapp is syncing it shows an information field at the bottom, this field becomes green when finished. But a few seconds later another datasync is made, not shown in the app but indicated by network speedmeter in androids statusbar. I think weather is syncing there but if you aren't aware of this and close the phoneapp before this second sync is finished, the watch runs into battery drain.
Since I wait 10 seconds after the app shows the green sync complete field I never had drain issues again.
amazfit watch app
I have the opposite problem. My phone battery drains like crazy. I have the Stratos for 2 days /int. version/. It works great, battery life is excellent. I suspect the Amazfit Watch App /Android/ is the culprit. I have to charge my phone 2-3 times daily??!
I think my Stratos worked fine until I activated the 'continuous HR' feature (and switched it off again). Before that, it would easily last for 5 days on a full charge. But I also get these fast drains now.
I restarted the watch a couple of times, let's see if this did it.
I've had the same issue a while ago (also after testing the continuous HR feature), and there I really had to reset the watch and reboot 3 times to get it back to normal again.

Something is breaking the Bluetooth connection between phone and watch, the most common cases are WiFi interferences (test with phone in Airplane mode and only BT on and see if battery usage is OK on phone) or corrupted data when syncing to the cloud (open Amazfit app and check if syncing is OK - you should see a green bar at the bottom -, you may need to unpair - it will delete all data on watch - then pair again and answer NO when it asks to restore old data).
Indeed seems bt is corrupted. When draining occurs, even if I switch off the bt from the phone, the icon on the watch says it is still connected. Again for me this does not occur on nougat, only when pairing with oreo device.

Zepp battery drain

Hi Guys
I have an Amazfit GTS 3 and use it with the Zepp App on a Galaxy S10. I have the problem that the Zepp App suddenly drains my Battery in the Background while I don't use any specific feature on the Watch. I use the watch for showing me Notifications but I have set it to just let some Notifications through that I want. I have reinstalled the Zepp App but nothing changed. Does anyone know this problem and how to solve it.
Thanks
I had this issue with my GTS 3 and Samsung Galaxy S8. Just unpair my watch and waited for 1 month. Latest FW fix this issue. I recommend you to update Zepp app and watch firmware to latest version.
I will do that. Thanks a lot.
Same problem here with the latest Zepp app v7.2.9 on a Google Pixel 6a phone, watch firmware is up to date. It's the app that uses the most battery and does not let the phone go to sleep, there's a wakelock from the Zepp app that keeps the phone awake for hours.
I contacted Amazfit support but they are not helpful at all. Disappointing because the watches are decent, the watch battery life is really good, but the software on the watch and phone is full of bugs, some I can live with, but things like battery drain I will not tolerate.
Intrestingly, my problem resolved itself after some days. Maybe it is because I put the app into the Standby for not frequently used Apps in the Samsung Battery settings. I still get all the push notifications to my watch. I don't know if the Google Pixel Phones have such a Feature or if my problem got resolved in another mysterious way, but maybe it could solve your problem aswell, if you put the app into Standby.
I have the Zepp app battery usage set to Restricted and it still doesn't help. But you are correct notifications still come. Anyway, we should not have to set it to Restricted, this is clearly a bug in the Zepp app.
Having the same exact issue starting just a couple of days ago. Tried uninstalling the Zepp app, removing Bluetooth connection on phone, put the Zepp on Sleep or even hard stop, but nothing seems to work.
What I just did was to remove the watch from Zepp app and leave the app alone on the phone and see if somehow the connection between Zepp and watch is causing the battery drain on the phone.
BTW: I just upgraded the latest firmware on the watch and the Zepp app was just installed from PlayStore.
Hope someone knows how to fix this annoying issue. I like the watch a lot, but leaving the app draining the battery is not an option for me.
I fixed it by returning the watch. Nice hardware but garbage software and I don't tolerate battery drain. I reported it to them in Oct, nothing changed in 3 months, clear sign to move on rather than hope for a fix.

Hello, I have the same problem with the GTS 4 mini.
Has removing the watch from the Zepp app had any effect?
Have you found out anything?
Have you tried installing an older version of the app?
Thank you.
As I already wrote above my problem seemed to misteriuosly resolve itself. I don't really know why and how. I just put the app into the list of standby apps and I still receive all the notifications. However the Bluetooth Connection to the watch draws quite a bit of power. It's quite weird. Some days my phone has good deep-sleep percentages and the other day it drains the battery quite a bit while just beeing in my pocket. I think the WIFI and cellular Connection at where I study has an impact on it. I could write a full thread about my battery life in the everyday life vs at the weekend but thats not the main Topic here. All in all my problem with the Zepp app seemed to have resolved itself but my battery life is still inconsistent. When I look at the wakelocks from the Zepp App a lot of them are caused by updating the weather, so maybe you can try disabling the weather functionality of your watch if you dont regularly use it. And I also recommend to put Zepp into Standby. If that resolves your problem i'm happy and if it doesn't, you can always put the settings back that I recommended.
I hope that I could help you and that your problem got solved.
Have a great day
Fast_Lessy
Thank you.
I have found that if I disable the Alexa connection the issue is completely resolved. This is of course very annoying, because then I can no longer use Alexa.
