Did you get this working? I need to do the same and I'm having a hard time figuring it out.

There are two very popular mxq variants. A full black "ott" and the beelink, which carries the red stripe across the upper corner. I have twrp for both plus the USB burn tool and factory images. Do you still need the files

Hi! The MXQ had to be root? How i root it? Please upload the files! Thank you!!

The mxq comes prerooted. I will post links very shortly

Remember, this is for sd booting only. You will have factory recovery when reboot. Don't forget to rename as "recovery"
These are not my work, ALL credit goes to the respective developers.

Does anyone have a TWRP backup of the all black MXQ OTT. I have managed to soft brick my box trying to install a custom rom HD18Q MBv2 Custom ROM for OTT MXQ. I can get into the recovery but not i just get E: failed to mount / cache (no such file or directory) and a lot of other failed messaged like E: format_volume: ext4_erase_volum failed on /dev/block/cache. E: failed to set up expected mounts for install; aborting Installation aborted.

You may want to start looking up am logic burn tool and the factory firmware.....pretty sure 112k4 through to 114k4. If all else fails, you can always use it to revert back to stock. Let me know if you need any help

I have got the usb burning tool already but do i have to open the box and start shorting pins on the nand? I read i need a usb a male to usb a male and i need to install libusb drivers after i have figured out how to make Windows 10 use unsigned drivers. Am i on the right track or is there an easier way than shorting pins and trying to use unsigned drivers.
Ok i have got the newer Amlogic burning tool version 2.0.3 which seemed to install the libusb drivers without any issues which will save me from forcing Windows 10 to allow use of unsigned usb drivers. All i need now is a picture of the 2 pins i have to short on the nand so Windows will see the device. Can anyone help with the pinout of the nand, and maybe alternatives for the points as they are very small. I could solder to them but its not easy by any means.
Many thanks

Way easier. Win 10 uses the worldcup drivers by default. Male to male you can get at a dollar store. From there. Just make sure when you plug in, you do the toothpick until it sees it in burn tool

Info added to my post at #10
If anyone can help with the nand pinout i would be really happy
H Man

H Man, do you not have the push button inside the a/v jack? Only reason I ask is mine do and have always made the box recognizable within 4 seconds of power applied. So ultimately, plug in USB (you must use the back port, not the sides), hold toothpick in a/v hole and make sure button depressed, hold and apply power and hopefully you will see it recognized in burn tool within seconds

[Q] Help with Cybernav Mini tablet. Cant flash firmware

Help needed. I turned off my chinese tablet (Cybernav Mini) and the next time I turned in on it showed: "Sorry! The process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly... Force Close. ". It shows up again, one after another. I press Force Close and then quickly another pops up, showing the same or a similar message.
I can't use the tablet as those messages block any other function of the tablet, i can turn it off by long press the power button or pressing the reset button but when it reboots, it happens all over again. Even after draining the battery for few days, when i boot it again, same problem happens. The problem is after i click on Force Close, it gives me another error too fast and i can't do anything like installing or use any app.
I contacted support and they sent me the last firmware for the device (YFPI08), but when I put the folder it in the external microSD card and power it on, it wont read it and instead it will go through the normal boot process and the Sorry! force close problem comes back again. I can't find a combination of pressing the two only hardware buttons it's got that could take me into some sort of rescue boot either.
I tried fastboot from my computer but it doesnt recognize the connected tablet.
I can't find any other way, as I am not too familiar with Android, and every solution seems to be very device specific oriented. So please, if there is a solution, I would appreciate your help.
Cheers

I doubt there is any custom rom for that tablet, nevertheless, if you know where I can find one, and how to do it, please, link me to the right place.
Also it is worth to mention that when this problem happened, I was playing with the Z4root app, so there is a possibility that I accidentally messed up with the rooting of the tablet. Would that make sense?
Cheers
45 reads no reply, someone must have at lest a simple suggestion, like bin the tablet or something, but I was told that here I was going to get some help in this forum. No one?

OK. Tested with the device using PhoenixCard img writer. The tablet boots up, but in safe-mode.
WIFI not working. But everything else seems to work.
I'm guessing the wifi chip in this device (PW08) isn't the same as in the YDPG18, though almost everything else is, except it's only a gps device.
Didn't test if the gps works ... still testing to see if there are some ics firmwares working for the device.

I've just launched into all this as I mucked my CyberNav. Thanks to your research (and a whole lot of googling on my own), I've now got serveral ROMs to chose from. Feeling a lot better now, actually.

A question about this...
I use PhoenixCard on a Win7 computer to "burn" an image to inserted sdcard. Mounting the result shows a "dynamic" folder full of 512 byte bin files.
So, I put said card in the CyberNav and turn it on. It boots normally and, after a short while, says "safe to remove sdcard." No rom update.
Am I doing anything wrong here?
Now, I'm attempting this because I mucked the internal sdcard partitions and it is entirely possible that said mucking is stopping the external sdcard from being read on boot. But, I just wanted to verify the proceedure I'm following before I start down the partition editing route.
Any suggestions?
David...
Your device should boot up showing a progress-bar if you insert a working upgrade sdcard.
When finished screen will say CARD OK and the device will shut down.
Remove the sdcard before booting up again.
If you do not remove the upgrade card the device will start to upgrade itself over again.
The sdcard indeed show a folder called dynamic with 100+ small files.
The upgrade files are in a hidden (to windows anyways) partition.
What firmware are you trying to flash?

Ahh, CyberNav Mini, not Mini II. I tried the pw08_20120428 and xTAB-50 images.
So, now I'm left wondering... is the failure to load the rom because the bootloader is smart enough to recognise an incorrect rom or is it dumb enough to give up on a bad partition? I'm still thinking it's the partitions.
But, I guess now I'm still looking for a working rom for the thing too. I may not need it if I can fix the partition problem without causing further damage. But, it would be nice to have that backup. Thanks for pointing out my error above... I missed the Mini to Mini II transition.
I'm just trying to get the CyberNav working again... not really interested in a latest/greatest upgrade as it did exactly what I wanted very well. I mounted it on the handlebar of my dirtbike with custom maps. Worked great, right up until I downloaded the latest track and left it there attached to my computer... that evening I went to make an Ubuntu USB startup disk... stupid, stupid, stupid...
Then again, my new tablet should arrive today or Tuesday... 10" and, yes, I'm going to mount that on my dirtbike too Thus is the benefit of using cheap Chinese tablets... If I don't fix my little CyberNav, no real tears. It would be nice, and I'm looking at it as a learning opportunity, but if it bricks in the end... such is life, only $100. Even the 10" is still in the disposable price range.
Thanks for confirming that I was doing the PhoenixCard part correctly - that's good to know,
David...

Perhaps it is possible to get a working firmware from Freeway AX
This device looks like a match. Just replace the boot-logo with something you like (if you can stand to read some polish)
Put the firmware files in a folder called 'yfpi08' on the sdcard.
It looks like the firmwares are all android 2.2 - ICS on a 800mhz device is perhaps too much to ask?
saluzinside Thursday, September 13, 2012 4:41 AM
I contacted the producer (YF) and they gave me the latest revision of the firmare:
FRF85B.yf.v2.2-104-g1b33231
They also told me that the YFPI08 is now out of production and this will be the last firmware revision.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18965091/YFPI08_yf.v2.2-104.zip
Just unpack the zip in your SD, make sure the "YFPI08" folder is present.
If you don't want to change the start image, remove "logo.bmp".
With this firmware my YFPI08 runs smooth and fast and all seems to work fine.

Yes, I've already grabbed the yfpi08 image (3 versions actually, no idea what's different between them yet) but got the impression they were for the 7" rather than the 5". Also, it could explain why I'm reading conflicting methods for the update: Mini = put img file on sdcard (in folder ??), Mini 2 = PhoenixCard. This Android fragmentation is crazy... so many different versions and methods to deal with each. Still trying to get my head wrapped around that.
> ...if you can stand to read some polish...
Ah... I'm Canadian... Japanese wife, Chinese tablet... we don't care I was a little surprised after the first factory reset and having Android come up entirely in Chinese... took a few minutes to find the language options It's all part of the fun,
David...
More: now YFPI08_yf.v2.2-104.zip from the above clubdx forums looks very interesting. My CyberNav lists 2.2-103-gb456292 as the OS version. An UPGRADE 2.2-103 to 2.2-104. Thanks for the link. Now I have 4 versions of that yfpi08 rom to try.
well, this is looking better.
I just did the system img (left all the others out, for now) and it actually did the update as expected. So, yes, the bootloader can read the sdcard if there's something useful on it.
Sadly, after switching the system back into English, it still can't access the internal sdcard.
So, I did it again with all the the files (nice background image by the way) and that updated the bootloader. With the same result. It appears that reverting to another ROM, factory default or otherwise, does not fix my partition errors. But, the good news is that I now most definitely have a factory ROM to revert to if I need it.
So long as I don't brick the device, I'm good. I can be a little more aggressive on the partition editing... just need to make sure i don't wipe out that bootloader and I should be okay.
I did notice that the other image from the links above has a "force.bin" file included. I also noticed that my second update didn't bother doing the system.img file. I suspect said 'force.bin' file forces this? No google hits on that at all... might try it one day if all else fails.
I think I'll start a new thread on partition editing rather than hijacking this one. At this point, I'd say the thread is solved, thanks to craigsoup, for both for the Mini and Mini-2. Thanks again,
David...

[Q] Sumvision Cyclone Voyager 10.1 BT - help installing CWM or Creating an image/rom

Hi all,
I am working in a school and we have ordered some tables for students to use. The problem I am faced with is that the systems needs to be very secure (the students can't change settings, install/uninstall apps) and i need to be able to apply the restrictions and software to many tablets with relative ease or to apply it to them simultaneously.
Sumvision provides software to flash an image to the tablet and will flash multiple tablets at once (8 if i remember correctly). It would be very handy if I could easily create my own image with a few apps and things configured so it can flash the tablet ready to use, however i have never created a ROM before and am inexperienced in programming.
Another option is to set up one tablet and use CWM to backup/restore to all the other devices, however I am unable to find any way of doing this, or any actual recovery.img files to download for this model. Does anyone know of any?
Any help would be appreciated, as at the moment my plan is to upgrade the tablets 8(?) at a time to 4.2.2 and use titanium backup to restore apps and settings to each tablet.
The tablets are Sumvision Cyclone Voyager 10.1" BT tablets.
Thanks in advanced,
tylergard702

Disclaimer: The following worked for me. Any one else is trying it at there own risk.
Here are roughly edited notes on how I got ClockworkMod recovery onto Sumvison Cyclone Voyager BT (Bluetooth edition)
Hope it's helpful, it comes from bits and pieces of other folks work found on the net, to all of whom I'm grateful.
After you go through this process on all tablets you could make a NAND backup, of a tablet suitably set-up for your own requirements, to micro-SD card and flash it to all remaining tablets
Getting into Recovery Mode
From a terminal program in fully booted system
#su#reboot recovery
or from Power Off
From Power OFF (NO Cables Connected)
Hold Vol+ while plugging in Power, release Vol+ when splash screen appears
How I installed CWM-based Recovery for Rockchip Sumvison Cyclone Voyager BT
Recovery image used was:
RECOVERY Image for v10_BT_recovery_fun_13-02-13.rar (Google it)
(Generic rockchip recovery image from CWM.zip did not work, but I used the flash_image utility from that archive. Again search Google for CWM recovery images for rockchip 3066)
In XP with tablet fully booted and power and USB cable plugged in (don’t know if power in required, as far as I remember adb driver is fine without power, but no harm to have it plugged in. When flashing firmware from SCV's rockchip software utilities power must be plugged in. Also if you have the choice, prefer USB2 over USB3, although unlikely to make a difference. (Note: since got adb working on Ubuntu Linux also, but that's another story )
1. Extracted flash_image from CWM.zip
2. Extracted recovery.img from v10_BT_recovery_fun_13-02-13.rar
3. Copied both files to /dev on tablet
adb push flash_image /dev/ adb push recovery.img /dev/4. Started shell
adb shell5.Set flash_image utility executable
chmod 755 /dev/flash_image6. Flashed the recovery.img
/dev/flash_image recovery /dev/recovery.img
Hope that helps
Thanks
Ah, thank you
This has quite possibly saved me hours of time reformatting the tablets. I take it that this can be installed relentless of the ROM that is on the tablet? I will try this as soon as the tablets arrive
Thanks again,
tylergard702
PS:
I don't suppose that sumvision's flash utility will flash the recovery.img to the tablet successfully? I currently don't have a linux workstation at work, and adb confuses me :S
Recovery Img?
Thankyou for all of you help John,
Ignore my previous post, i dived in with adb and got quite well acquainted with it
The only problem i have now is that the rar file for the recovery .img you told me to Google for yields no results. Is there another place i can download it? i can't find any :S.
Or if you have a copy of it would you be able to email it to me? (I can PM you my email)

Disclaimer: things can go wrong. You are responsible for whatever you do to your tablet!
I think that the rockchip tools should flash the recovery image for you, I haven't used the Sumvision utility in a while so don't know. The rockchip tools will provide you with a Windows user interface. Make sure you only flash recovery, and leave the rest unmarked. Put the recovery image in the same directory where the tool executable resides (or it may need to be in a sub-folder named ROM). I think the app will tell what path it is looking at for images.
Download from the Sumvision support page (I'm not allowed to post links yet, but find your tablet on Sumvision and go to support page)
Look for: Download Link for RKAndroid tool "cleanup tool" REQUIRED on that page.
Good luck!

Okay, PM your email and I'll send you a dropbox link to the recovery image previously mentioned.
(I discovered that the CWM recovery for generic rk3066 that didn't work for me, was an incomplete download and likely the reason it didn't work for me. I haven't retried it because the v10_BT_recovery_fun_13-02-13 recovery image works fine, so just left that alone).
Worked a treat
Thank you very much John,
The fun_ package worked perfectly.
The generic package lead to a broken recovery, it wasn't just your download, however the specific package soon fixed that.
Can't tell you how much easier you have made my work, i can now prepare about 4 tablets in 30 minutes for the students to use, which will come in very handy when they get their hands on them and start to find ways around our security measures.
Thanks for everything,

I think that the rockchip tools should flash the recovery image for you, I haven't used the Sumvision utility in a while so don't know. The rockchip tools will provide you with a Windows user interface. Make sure you only flash recovery, and leave the rest unmarked. Put the recovery image in the same directory where the tool executable resides (or it may need to be in a sub-folder named ROM). I think the app will tell what path it is looking at for images.

Hey jtheg,
Of course I can If you PM me your email I will send you a zip containing the flash_image file, the recovery10.img file (I renamed it for batch purpose, but it works all the same). The zip also contains adb and a batch script I wrote that should do it for you. If you don't want to use the script, you can refer to the instructions above or ask for help
Just make sure all the drivers for your tablet are installed before you start.
I used a program called "moborobo" It detects the device and installs all the drivers for you. It installs junk on your device but you can uninstall it right after
I would also like to point out that although this has worked for me with 16 of these tablets, It may not work for you due to subtle differences between the tablets or human error, and I cannot accept liability for your device. I can, however, say it has worked treat for me and wish you the best of luck experimenting with your device As soon as I get to work in about 20~30 minutes I'll check back and email you if I can

OTT TV BOX A95X Amlogic S905W 2G/16G Original Factory Image/Recovery

I had this TV Box I'd bought from Wish. I thought I would share a (nearly) stock image. I pulled it after having to play around with the Google Play Store for a while because it ceased functioning.
I had noticed several other people having issues with obtaining a stock ROM, possibly on other forums.

Thought it thru some more today and I'm adding a raw image of boot, bootloader and system. There may be more on this device that someone will find useful, if it's the case, let me know so I can dumped and post it.
File availability
Hi engineerchad
I am seeking the files you previously linked to, however they no longer appear available.
I'd be very grateful if you could make them available again please, if you do not mind?
Thank you

I will go ahead and put it back up, give me a little bit seems like I lost the files on my online drive so I'll have to go ahead and either pull from a backup or take it off the device again. Check back later today or tomorrow and I should have a new link posted for you.

I hope it helps! I would post the link for the TWRP recovery that I used, but it was specifically stated to -please- not link up to it, reproduce, copy, re-upload, etc by the author. I located it with a Google search for "TWRP Amlogic S905W" or something of the like. It doesn't function perfectly (on my high-def TV, it displays on the top half of the screen, with the bottom half just kind of filled with garbage and you NEED a mouse hooked to the box to use it, but it's workable).

It should show in both links "recovery.stock.img" is the filename.
The conventions of naming partitions on the box are quite simple /dev/block/system /dev/block/recovery /dev/block/boot etc (I believe. I actually haven't plugged this one in for a minute after I got a slight upgrade for it that I'm using now.) I had originally intended to do this myself, but have been trying for a long time to recover from the mental/physical effects of a quarter million dollar set of injuries last year and it's been pretty brutal.
I see where someone has done an unofficial TWRP in https://forum.xda-developers.com/android-stick--console-computers/amlogic/recovery-twrp-3-0-2-0-touch-recovery-t3454549 for this device with 8GB ROM, so I'm not sure if this would work just as well, or if it needs to be remade (this box is labelled as A95X and it's the amlogic s905x chipset with 2GB/16GB so I'm not sure if it would somehow be different from the link above or not.)
I figured I'd update, it seems like I may have misread the post originally on freaktab the author requested people share this link as opposed to mirroring. Here it is (had to search it up again, by coincidence it's also working for my a95x max + box which is also OTT TV brand I'll try to get an image up from that but my computer shows it has a root trojan in the stock image?)

I have a95x 1g 8g and was at android 6 (this has 2 g 16g as well posted below)
Link posted is for ALL firmwares for the ott nexbox devices. Pretty sure some of you will need this. The listing does not say 7.1.2 but it is. It says 7 or 7.1 no worries. I got it, used it.
It is nexbox... so if you have the nexbox logo on your screen this is your stock 7.1.2 as I have just upgraded my box today.
You can use twrp, but do it from SD and never install it as you don't need to. Put twrp .img file NOT the zip with the blank update zip below. Never need to lose stock recovery.... I think. Not sure about custom roms yet but will lknow in an hour I'd say. Also included a zip of a program that will format your sd card fat32. I had a 64 gig card and windows won't make it fat32. Stupid.
As far as making the bootable sd card, I kept only getting 2 files when I ran the burn card maker you may have seen. That uboot one never was put in. Then by mistake I loaded the main img file after one completion. So not sure if you have to hit make twice or maybe because I used a 64 gig card. But with all 3 files there, I stuck in the sd card, nothing except hdmi plugged in.... held the reset button in and powered on..... got the android guy and a long update bar.......updated!
If you can put stock by SD card... do it! That other method via USB with USB burning tool app? If it works, yay. But I never got it working. That fat32 maker was very handy!
Link if you have nexbox:

Has twrp but all crappy like mentioned earlier... pretty sure. But all firmware from 5 to 7 and I got 7 from there.
its not a nexbox..and its 2g 16g.. i cant find its stock rom anywhere,, the ds card thing does not work either ..i tried with numerous custom rom jus dont boot with the ds card,,

hmm.. think it is the same box. I will re-read your specs if you listed them

MX10 Android TV Box - SuperSU Issue

I recently purchased an MX10 Android TV Box running Android 7.1.2
It is supposed to be rooted and SuperSU came installed but when you run it, it reports that the SuperSU binary is not installed and SuperSU cannot install it. I've done a full factory reset but the image comes back broken like that.
I downloaded updated firmware for this box and the SuperSU zip file but I cannot get this box into recovery mode. Everything I've found says to stick a toothpick in the AV hole and power up the box. When I do that, the MX10 logo shows but then it pops up with "erasing" and then reboots. All that does is a full factory reset.
If I run Root Checker, it says I don't have root.
Anyone have any experience with this issue and this box? If I can't get into recovery mode then I can't fix SuperSU and/or update the firmware to one where I'm rooted.
The box otherwise seems to work ok with the exception that I cannot set a live wallpaper. I'm just not rooted.
Thanks for any help!

Yeah i just got mine yesterday and im having the same issue. I get a Root user account error with Root Checker Pro. Ive tried clearing data in the SU app but nothing. There is an update for SU in the Play Store but i read on Freaktab where someone said not to update SU app or it will give you a bootloop. I havent updated it yet cuz i wanted to do some more investigating but i really dont see the harm in just updating the app itself. I know updating the su binary will result in a bootloop because i updated the binary on my T95Z and got the bootloop. Ive been googling all day trying to find a TWRP.img file for the MX10 but have found nothing yet. Ive also been looking for a root method for this box as well but not sure what i should use. It would be nice if these each box had it own sub forum like the phones have.. would make life so much easier. lol
If you figure anything out i would appreciate if you would pass that info on.. will do likewise.

Have you updated the SU app? Not the su binary but the app from play store itself?
Hi, actually I was looking to root the MX10 but for a simple reason:
all I want to to is to get a shutdown or power off button, but this seems missing on the MX10 .. !!! First time I see a box without the shutdown option.
I looked up for apps providing power off button but they all require root access and so don’t work on the out-of-the-box MX10.
Anyone has same need and a solution?
Hi, I received my MX10, a few days ago and have the same problem (SuperSU issue).
I purchased it from GeekBuying, and posted on their blog, for the latest firmware update I could find: http://blog.geekbuying.com/2017/12/...r4-32gb-emmc-tv-box-firmware-update-20171214/
Really want to root it, so I can edit the keyboard/remote control files to map keys on the H18+ remote I bought at the same time as the MX10.
I haven't tried flashing different firmware (or booting into recovery). If/when I receive a reply to my post on the GeekBuying blog, I'll post here - but no idea if they'll reply.

Seems really odd that it would come with Super SU installed, and not be rooted. Then again, it also advertises (on GeekBuying.com - in case anyone purchased elsewhere) that it comes with Kodi pre-installed, and mine didn't.

Hi mate,
Try my guide in the Media TV Box Amlogic forum. The recovery image is for TWRP. But you could try Philz or others. Worked on S912 and S905 so far fine.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...mlogic-s905x-s912x-faq-backup-switch-t3752897
No root? I suggest you follow backup instructions, take 3 backups - all paritions, boot only, recovery only.
Then you can extract the boot image from your backup and use that with Magisk to root your system. After Magisk modifies your boot image, reboot, and flash the modified package via TWRP bootable (see topic)
If you have anything you wish to contribute, please feel free to post anything you have learnt that you feel will help others.
Cheers mate!
Thanks for the tip
Thanks Freak69! It was so easy ... but still it would be good to root the MX10

Hey @flipmode_11 - which TWRP image should we use, please? In your post, you state to, "Download the X96 Media Player TWRP Recovery image...or a different device". As the X96 is S905X (from a quick Google - don't shoot me if I'm wrong!) and the MX10 is RK3328, the TWRP image for the X96 wouldn't work, would it? I took a look at the list of devices and can't find a matching device.
Cheers,
Richard.
---------- Post added at 09:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:54 PM ----------
Somethng that REALLY annoys me about the MX10, is that I can't get it to write to my external USB drive (NTFS). It worked just fine - out of the box - on my old MXIII-G, but the MX10 just won't write to it (Total Commander and an FTP server app I usually use in order to access it from my LAN). Is this because of some weird driver, or because of root (permissions... I checked under apps and it has access to storage - but of course it does, because it can read the drive)?
I'm probably not too fussed about rooting this thing, if I can just get external drives working with it.
I did read about Android not supporting NTFS, for write - but my old MXIII-G did, so I'm assuming this should, too. The only other thing I can think of, is that the MXIII-G had something in the firmware for writing to NTFS.
I can't see why there would be external USB drive support, but you can't write to it - I mean, it's a TV box, surely there are some other people out there who copy movies, etc. to an external drive on the box, to watch?
G'day mate,
Yeah look just give it a try and see how you go. Booting to this recovery.img will not make any modifications. It is simply loading an interface and relevant dependencies for it to run. I read something about how RockChip devices are limited or something. I forget now, but that made me steer clear of them, despite having more regular updates and new hardware. :/ hmmm
No, you won't find a matching device. It is shocking that these mass-manufacturered generic devices aren't also listed. I recommend you give the recovery.img in my topic a stab.
Where did you source you MX10 from? Have you asked them? Although, every single Chinese seller I have come across has zero working knowledge or which models are better, plus have 101 mistakes in their specs (just got a $50 and $100 refund on Ebay for X96 and a 10.1" tablet! Wrong specs!).
NTFS? So it can READ but not WRITE? Hmm I would wipe everything in FAT32 for Android. Everything is much happier. You could try exFAT which is a superior file system. Have you tried this? Got any other ExFAT + FAT32 devices? Hmm actually I think I've been down that path with exFAT (Paragon tools to solve). Double check exFAT compatibility before proceeding with backup/wipe/re-format. Actually I know the Nexus 6 was able to read NTFS storage as helped a mate with one. But depends on the manufacturer! But the Nexus6 couldn't write to HPFS - never tested exFAT. I think there is an app - USB Media Exporter...? USB Media Explorer..? - I forget!?!
As you mentioned Total Commander, you could try it with the Paragon tool plug-in: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paragon.tcplugins_ntfs_ro -or- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paragon.mounter (not tried this, but images looks interesting - free!). I use Solid Explorer + Smart File Manager - never been a fan of TC... There are other methods out there, but they require Root, which will not help you! e.g. ChainFire's StickMount.
No, I think you should proceed. However, as per my topic, take a full backup of 3+ partitions prior to making changes. I had to revert to a backup on 20th as had 2x SED processes going nuts. Titanium backup'd all important stuff. Then rebooted to Micro SD TWRP and did 3 Partitions (leaving int. storage intact). So Rooting is essential. It really is. Plus using Magisk is even more important, as it does not make modifications to /System which makes life much easier upgrading/troubleshooting/debugging et al.
NOTE: I would infact backup all the data on that ext. drive, delete partitions and create 2 FAT32/EXFAT/NTFS for redundancy. I have had too many past issues with partitions getting corrupt on external drives.
1. Backup Boot partition, 2. Extract the backup and find the boot.img, 3. Install Magisk Manager, click Install and select option 2 and browse for the boot.img, 4. Flash updated /MagiskManager/boot.img via TWRP and you are rooted w/ Systemless SU and BusyBox. There is seriously nothing better than having Root and being Play "Certified". You won't look back! Plus you can always re-flash the stock Boot.img and do OTA manufacturer updates, then open Magisk Manager and repeat.
Mac is like that. You can only read NTFS drives, but read / write to stupid HFS/HPFS drives with Mac, unless you install something like Paragon to read NTFS. The same for Windows, can read HFS+ but read/write NTFS.
Every Android device, regardless of OS, is totally different. Different Kernel's, different builds, ...
Good luck and let me know how you go?
Cheers mate!

It worked just fine on my old MXIII-G, but the MX10 just won't write to it (Total Commander and an FTP server app I usually use in order to access it from my LAN).

Ok so ive been on Samsung for the last 5-6 years and never had to backup things like boot.img, recovery.img cuz we have have odin, so there was never any need to...... so i just did a google search on how to do this but it only brings up ways to do it with root. Can you explain how to do this or link to a tut?
Also could i get a more in depth of using Magisk? I have it on my HTC M7 but i rarely ever play around with it... actually im root with SU on it. So i have to run Magisk on my MX10.. search for boot.img.. patch it.. flash some zip in twrp.. and how do i get twrp on the box.. through adb? I should know this as long as ive been rooting but root on U.S. snapdragon samsung phones is totally different since the bootloader cant be unlocked. Thanks for your info so far bro

Did you see my questions?
Where did you source your device from? Ebay? Online? Retail?
What software and steps above did you try?
Did you try the Paragon app with Total Commander?
Did you try downloading the recovery.img linked in the Media TV Box category? https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=75644464
Using Magisk is even more important these days as developers attempt to detect SU/Root, plus Magisk does not make modifications to your /System partition which makes life MUCH easier upgrading / troubleshooting / debugging and allows you to mask Root/SuperUser to then use all apps (Spotify, Play, Netflix, Stan, et al.)

I got my box from Amazon. Ive not tried anything with it yet. I dont use Total Commander.. that was another guy saying something about it and wanting to be able to write to external sd... i could care less for that. I want root for adaway and a few other things. Im using Blockada right now to block ads but i cant use it and Expressvpn at the same time.. so my choices are either block ads or run vpn to be anonymous.. cant do both because you cant run two vpns at the same time in android and blockada's vpn is not the same kind of vpn.
Ok i just read your thread.. i will give it a try sometime this weekend maybe.
Ya know the weird thing is is that DevCheck says i have root and busybox installed. Su app is there but say su binaries arent installed. I dont get why this box is shipped like this. lol
You are funny! I was talking to @RADiuMOz - I had quoted him.
No wonder your reply made no sense. Then my reply made no sense.
Please see my topic on AMLogic devices "AMLogic S905 S912 FAQ ✰ Fix Root, Switch SU, Backup/Restore etc ✩ Media Player TV Box" here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...mlogic-s905x-s912x-faq-backup-switch-t3752897
I would suggest you follow the steps to Backup first as it does not make any changes to your system.
Then follow steps to Root (download 3 files) and proceed with the FAQ I have written on how to root and which of the 3 methods suit you (probably the one similar to Part 1 of the backup, plus flashing the ZIP.
I had similar corrupt Root issue where SU and SUD were present, but didn't appear to have permissions. Some apps reported Root OK, and others No Root.
Anyway, let me know how you go. I have documented how to un-root / clean-up and then to re-root your system (i.e. Corrupt Root). Reply there.
Cheers!
p.s. May I suggest you check out AdGuard instead of AdAway? It lets you subscribe to block lists, plus you can set-up DUAL VPN's with it (read their KB/FAQ's). AdGuard's menu's allows you to accomodate both being able to VPN and run adblocking at the same time - ROOT Free. So you can probably ignore everything I have even said! LOL (AdGuard > Left Menu > Settings > Proxy Settings)
VyprVPN is far better and I suggest you try them when they have a promo. You can enable an option to block malicious servers, etc. But no way of managing this and adding adverts. Anyway, I switched and tried various VPN providers and found VyprVPN far better, plus offer a higher level of OpenVPN encryption which is not blocked or detected by 3rd parties called "Chameleon".

EXPERIMENT: Has anyone tried an OTG adapter in the USB-C slot for a Galaxy S8? Then connect a small USB drive with a recovery.img only, formatted in FAT32? You could even try placing the recovery.img on your Micro SD inside your phone...? Perhaps while holding down menu + up or menu + down, switch on your phone, and it might read the recovery.img on the external memory and boot into that?
*Anyway*, try the same thing in your MX10 and report back add success. Use a compatible S905 TWRP recovery.img (see my type here with download attached and tested with S905x Devices.
Hmm... So many ideas... so many things I have not tried!

Ok.. everyone else that was wondering about root.. looks like this is our answer.. no root.. no TWRP...... for now at least. This box is still fairly new so im not giving up. It took 4-5 months for them to get root for Snapdragon S8 so who knows.. it may come for the MX10 one day too

First up - sorry mate - I actually thought I'd replied to your post, but clearly either didn't submit it, or just dreamed the whole thing.
I have to wait for free time at the weekends (I have kids), but I'll go back to your topic and give that a go.
As for NTFS, etc. I ended up buying a Synology DS218J NAS box as I want my daughter to be able to back up her MacBook to it, as well as probably back up some of my stuff to it as well - and of course then use for the MX10. I bought it from GeekBuying, and they're not that particularly helpful. Not intentionally unhelpful, though.
My MXIII-G was great for just working straight out of the box, with the external NTFS drive (exact same drive).
So now, as for rooting, my only reason will be so I can remap some of the keys on my remote - but don't absolutely have to do that. But I'll do backups anyway, so that I'm ready for if/when any firmware updates come out.
I'll certainly know to have a MUCH better look round, before buying my next Android TV box, though - that's for sure. I did a quick search, but didn't find anything on a user level - but also didn't search XDA: just did a regular Google search.
Thanks for your detailed reply, as I know it takes time and thought on your part - it's much appreciated. As soon as I've got something to report, I'll post in the same thread, so other people can perhaps benefit from my findings.
Cheers,
Richard.

Apologies! I thought I'd replied, here, but clearly didn't submit it, or just dreamed I had. I've replied to your PM, but also for anyone/everyone else's benefit (and in brief), I bought my MX10 from GeekBuying. I just bought a NAS box, so I'm going to use that instead of trying to get NTFS working, although the people at GeekBuying said, "Our factory tests show that the MX10 can read and write ntfs hard drives. So please try again." I'd be interested to hear whether anyone else is able to write to NTFS.
I'm going to go back to your topic, and give that a go - and will then post back here, to let everyone know (hopefully might benefit someone).
Cheers,
Richard.

Need help finding info on installing a custom ROM for an Acer A6201 (GrandPad) Tablet

Hello,
I have acquired an Acer tablet that we used for my grandparents called GrandPad by Consumer Cellular. There is a really stripped down software/OS on it that is more "elderly friendly". I know the user interface is built on top of Android (maybe 6.0-6.1). My question is how to I find a custom ROM and installation instructions on this so I can make this thing a decent functioning tablet? I'm having a hard time finding anything about this. Not sure if Acer took another variant of their tablet and made it exclusive to Consumer Cellular.
Here's all the info I have on it. Not sure how to access the Android info on top of the current software.
Model: A6201
SNID: 81790091576
S/N: FFHZ8AA008817DBF337602
Hi there , I would try to look if theres any rom for it , can you upload screenshots of the ui? Also , please remove the IMEI part as it is not necessary and it is a potential security risk for you if someone uses it .

Hello ThatLatinGuy,
I have tried endlessly searching for a ROM. I just can't find much info at all on ACER Android tablets in general, and much less on this specific model they made for a cellular company.
As far as the stock UI, you can do a web search for GrandPad Consumer Cellular. Apparently I can't give the link because I don't have 10 post yet.
After posting this, I did hold down the (power and +- volume) button and got to the Android recovery screen to do a factory reset thinking it would reset back to Android 6.0.1. I did work....sort of. The "grandpad" UI is no longer there, but it does boot up to some application called "GrandPad Eagle". I assume this is some kind of software they ran on top of Android when developing the tablet's interface??? There is an option on that screen to do a hardware test. When I touch on that it opens some Android app called Alpaca. From there I can swipe down from the top screen and access the Android settings menu. There's no launcher and I've even tried to sideload .apk apps (with unknown sources turned on) but gives me an error about it can't read file. It let me turn on developer options in the settings.
I can try to upload some images, but every time I go to insert image it wants a link and not a location on this site. Tried Google photos link and that didn't work apparently. Anyway, any settings specifically might help just let me know and I'll try to get it on here somehow...maybe.
Well this sounds really familiar , I was in the same boat a few years ago with a 2012 kindle fire HD so I will try to apply the same principle here . I have also tried to look for information about this tablet and only got the specs , wich are actually pretty good , but anyway does the tablet have an internet browser? if so type fdroid an download the app install it and open it , search for a launcher so you can atleast use the tablet .
If not , how are you sideloading it? with adb ? or does this tablet support mtp?
You can try to upload the pictures to google photos and upload the link with some characters in between (something like : www----photoservice_x2323-com)
Havent found anything about the Granpad Eagle app, although Im pretty sure that your assumptionis correct , and the Alpaca app is equally obscure , so please try to upload the picture of those .
Cheers

The tablet has no browser. Very very limited apps in general. I tried to download the apk apps for chrome and nova launcher. I can push them from my computer to the tablet . But when I touch to install it, I get an error saying it can't read the APK file. Don't know why it would say that. I do have trust unknown sources checked.
I'll see what I can do about the pics.

Update...
I managed to install new apps via ADB. I was able to remove the grandpad eagle from ADB as well. I rebooted the tablet and the Nova Launcher (app I installed) settings came up.
Main problem now is that there is no navigation buttons on the bottom. There's no way I can go back or home. Not sure yet how to enable them. It's a bit annoying when you can't go back to the home screen or switch apps.

Gotcha , download this apk and push it , its like that floating button in the iphone it is not a perfect solution but it works .
https://home-button.uptodown.com/android
For a cleaner solution , try this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5qcD8t0o2M
its gesture based , but it looks better .
Thanks,
Even though the OEM stuff is off...the Android OS is still a little quirky. For example, there is no way to put it to sleep with the hardware buttons. And I have to hit the power and volume up button to power it off. Just random stuff like that.
Oh well, it's better than it was. Just wish I could do a fresh restore without the OEM stuff. Or better yet, a custom ROM. Which seems like is impossible since this tablet is so unique.

hI , did you resolve this problem ?
Hey y'all,
I've been lurking here for quite some time, so it's nice to finally register and become a part of the forums here! At any rate, here goes my first post...
I have this exact tablet and I thought maybe it would be a good starting point for me to try working with ADB and all that. The Acer A6201 I was given appears to have no OS on it, as when booting it I am met with a screen displaying the 'GrandPad Eagle' logo with the Identifier, Serial #, Telephony, and SIM # with barcodes. Also displayed are the buttons: Install, Shutdown, Pick WiFi, About, and Hardware Test. LTE is on (I put my Cricket SIM in it), as well as WiFi. It reads Eagle vc21618-b356. Upon connecting to LTE, it reads:
SyncManager: Sync Device...
RegisterManager: Registering...
EagleAPI: Starting Register...
RegisterManager: Register Success
EagleAPI: Starting Sync...
AutoWIFIManager: doGiraffeWIFISearch >> no matches
That's pretty much it. If I click Hardware Test, it goes to something called Alpaca, which runs through all hardware tests with no issues. From Alpaca I can also pull down the drop down menu which allows me into settings and all that. From there, I've enabled developer mode and USB debugging, as well as install from unknown sources.
As the OP originally stated, there is no web browser and I've had zero luck installing any APKs or anything; I can't even get Chrome on there via ADB.
Any thoughts or advice?
Just wanted to update this thread and see if anyone else has made any progress. I have the Acer A8202 model.
Grandpad apps removed. (until factory reset) use a usb keyboard and hit escape to get access to the system menu then enable developer and adb. Nav bar is under Display. I installed a browser, Aptoide and a launcher via adb. I am still working on the status bar(working in settings but not in all other apps) I believe there is a full screen mode system wide setting on in the build.prop file. temp solution is "Material Status bar" and "Mi control center" for a status bar. Google play services install but constantly crash. I was also able to unlock the bootloader. but to edit the system files will need root and a Twrp img file that doesn't give black screen.

I got the exact same model A8202. I am trying to "Apply update from ADB" and it says to "send the package you want to apply to the device with "adb sideload <filename>" Where do I find the package (OTA update ?)

Has anyone found a ROM or a solution to remove the Grandpad software and install a normal Android OS?

I am looking for it too. There's got to be somebody out there who can provide an OTA package to upload via ADB.

How did you "manage to push new apps via adb"? for me "adb devices" shows nothing...

"From Alpaca I can also pull down the drop down menu which allows me into settings" I can see Alpaca but I can't get to the settings. Mine is A8202. Is that why it's missing?

Hrprada, there isn't a Stock package/rom that we can use. In order to side load apps you will need to make sure developer and adb are enabled. Google is your friend to get those. All i did was use a usb keyboard to show the menu. then swipe down.
