USB cables - G3 Accessories

After i was struglin to charge my G3 through my pc i buy a traveler charger from ebay...its the same as the stock charger and said 1.8mA..i saw that my phone didnt charge as fast as my stock charger and still my wirless chargers couldnt charge my phone...but i saw another strange think...i bought a collored (w/ LED) usb cable to use it as a night light as long as with my stock charger on my bed....my phone charged as slow as i had connected into my pc usb 2.0!
So i test all my usb cables and saw an extremly diverse charging rate..
As you can see in my pics while using ampere all my other (ebay, old phones) usb cables couldn't pass the 350-400mA charging rate..while my stock LG cable could charge a bit more on the Traveler charger while with the stock charger it could get to 1.0A easily..
So whats wrong??Is usb cables equally different as the chargers???
Thanks and sorry about my horrible english!!!

So, as far as I know, with all of the phones I have had, including the G3, charging my phone through a computer always have horrible charge rates compared to charging through a wall outlet. Though, when you say a "travel charger" in not sure if this is what you meant or if you meant some other form of charger.
From your post I've come to view your question as being "can different USB cables charge at different rates?" the answer is yes. Different usb cables will grant different charging rates depending on what battery type that USB cable was meant to charge.
One last thing though, I would love to know what app you use to find all that information!

So just to buy a funcy and funny usb cable with leds inside from ebay is just a waste of money...even with wall charger it can give to the phone max 600mA...
Anyway thanks...the app is Ampere!!!it give you the charge and discharge flow

[Q] True or false: Atrix USB cable has magic powers.

Hey y'all,
I was in the AT&T store the other day getting a replacement for my wall charger (it died and they replaced it under the warranty, nice guys) and they told me not to use any other USB cable with my phone because the Motorola one is special.
They say it charges faster and maybe does other things better too, although they didn't really say what else. Is there any truth to this, or were they just trying to sell more cables?
they are trying to sell more cables...
I got a cable from ebay for my car with a 90 degree tip so i can charge the phone while using it as a navigation device. it surely wasn't a Motorola cable but works great. I have also used other peoples chargers and cables, I think I had an issue only once where I borrowed the cable from a friend and the cable didn't want to charge, don't know what that was about, didn't play with it enough to figure it out, may have been a defective cable. but basically it comes down to, the charger is putting out 5 volts, if the cable carries all 5 volts to the device and doesn't loose any, it will work fine. Also there are only 2 pins in the cable that are used for charging, one for (-) and one for (+). those pins are all the same for every usb charger or a computer. also phones with that type connector are wired to receive the charge only through those 2 pins. Thus, all of them are made the same. The only thing that manufacturers will do is change the gauge of the wire being used in the cable, but with a 3 foot long cable, and only 1amp of power maximum traveling through it, it just doesn't matter
hope I was some kind of help to you...
Hey! I was also thinking that in my mind but couldn't express. I thought everyone will think I'm getting crazy! Buy my atrix full charges in just 1.5/1.45 hours with the Motorola's Official Wall Charger & USB Cable. I haven't seen any phone that charges that fast! The battery backup of this phone is awesome! 2days with moderate use & 4.5 days with normal use. Aweomeeeeeee!
I use the Factory cable at home, and an old Blackberry cable at work. No difference in the USB cables performance.
Hi,
Yes, nothing magic...
The Motorola wall plug is 850mA output, a PC USB port is UP TO 500mA and for example the IPhone one (square one) is 1000mA.
So the charging time will be shorter with the IPhone one, then the Motorola and finally the USB port.
As I have already say in another thread, I have connect the +5V of my power supply directly on the USB port, so now, no problem !
Now you know !

Auto Charger - will any USB charger work?

will the included USB cable that comes with the Note be able to charge the phone in my car if i plug it into lets say my iPhone auto adapter which has a usb port on it?

You will be charged at much slower rate (limited to 500ma max), or not at all if your phone battery is almost dead. iPhone chargers are designed for iPhone only. You will need a Samsung auto charger (some other non-iPhone smartphone chargers may work too, just not iPhone chargers).
I just bought a cheap 5$ car charger USB adapter for the note will it work?

It will definitely work. The question with those cheap ones is, how long will it last. I usually try to find an OEM branded one like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250973439590#ht_2859wt_1000
Typically, chargers with USB port on it will only do slow charge. In order to support fast charge, you will need short out the data pins to allow phone to draw more than 500ma. Typically auto-chargers that comes with microUSB plug directly, such as the Samsung auto charger, will do so, asume your charger is rated to output more than 500ma.

It will be able to charge it. Keep in mind IF your iPhone USB charger max current output (5V 1000mA) is LESS than the Note's charger output, it will take longer to fully charge - but it will charge and will NOT damage the phone.
If you're looking to buy a new usb charger, look for one with the highest mA output rating since whatever device you plug into it will only draw what it needs. ie, my iPad charger is rated @ 2A/2000mA so it covers every device I own (all rated for different current inputs from 500mA up to 2000mA) and that's the only usb charger I take when I travel since I just have to switch out cables to charge other devices. On the other hand, if I only had a lower current rating usb charger, my iPad (requires 2000mA) would be out of luck.
Current output info can be found on the respective charger of your favorite device.
Hope that helps.
it does help, thanx Rand! i cancelled my Amazon order...wish i saw this post sooner.
I have this works great with anything up to 2.1amps...

Looks like that charger is rated @ 700mA. It'll charge the note about 30% slower than the wall charger.

micro USB cables and slow charging

None of my micro USB cables will charge my E970 without a "slow charging" notification except for the cable that came with the phone. Even the venerable 6' monoprice cable isn't up to the task. HTC cords aren't cutting it, either. Does anybody have any 6'+ (ideally a 10') micro B cables that will charge the phone without slow charging? My monoprice 6' cables (i have a bunch) barely keep the phone from losing charge when serving up LTE hotspot, where as the LG cable charges it whilst doing whatever I can to suck down as much current as possible.
Also, I really don't want to short data cables. Somehow the stock LG cable does full current while maintaining data capability, and that's what I'm looking for.

OEM LG cables can be found almost anywhere used so that shouldn't be a problem. Otherwise, you may be looking at the wrong end of the cable. I have a spare tablet plug charger that puts out up to 2 amps and that seems to be what works best for me no matter what the cable. You might want to look for one of those instead of just buying more cables.
FWIW....I had the opposite result. The cable and adapter which has been near my bedside for the last year (for my HTC EVO 4G) kept giving me the slow charging notification on my me LGOG. If I used the LG adapter and cable all was well, but it was shorter than I wanted. I changed out the adapter and kept the older long cable and still got the slow charging notification. It seems most of my existing cables have this issue...even when using the new LG adapter.
I have not looked into power capacities on the usb cables since I charge each night and don't need to recharge during the day. Didn't expect there to be a throughput difference, but the new LG cable does seem to be different.

What is the part number for the oem charger and USB cable?
I use a Samsung charging cable with my LG plug and it charges regularly. I love the Samsung cable because the mirco-usb plug is asymmetric so I always plug it in correctly the first time, every time. Even in the dark. The cable is pretty long too. I don't use the Samsung plug because it only outputs 0.7A though.

I also use a cheapo USB male to female extender that I got off eBay at my gf's place and it charges just fine too.
I'm having the opposite problem, I have had my phone for a month, out of no where the original charger is throwing up slow charging icon. Wierd

Same problem here, just started about a week ago. It doesn't matter what cable I use it keeps switching between slow charge and regular charge. It charges without problems when the phone is off though. Also when I plug my phone into my pc it keeps disconnecting every few minutes. I'm starting to think its a problem with the phone itself and not the charger or cord as they work fine with all my other devices just not the Optimus G

I use all sorts of cables and so far the only time I see "Slow charging" is when it's plugged into my laptop or one of my USB hub. Those are the only times I could narrow mine down to.
In the car I use cheapo monoprice cable and charger, in the bedroom it's using the charger and cable from my HTC inspire. By my PC I have a Belkin 6 plug 2 usb wall charger installed with the stock cable, and at the office an iPhone 1G wall plug. I don't think I have even plugged in the oem charger that came with it.

Fast charge cable 1000mA+

so got tired of not finding a fast charge mod so I mod the cable.
took a realy thin cheap USB cable and cut it in two. on the phone side chortsircut the data cables (white and grean) then connected the vcc+ and ground- normal.
the only reason I cut it in two was to be able to tread a shrink tube on the cable.
now I get fast charge from car and power pack and. and it works perfect.
now stop saying u need a special or expensive cable.
u need a knife and shrink tube and a heat gun (a cigaret lighter works)
and no u can't use this cable for datacynk only charge

Cool, thanks man, I'm gonna do that.
Why blow data when you can just get a cheap 4$ cable from newegg with 22 awg power leads. I linked it in confirmed usb cable thread. You destroyed a cable and made it special, hence using a special one instead of standard. The base is pre shorted. You increased AWG technically. Get it? You made a charge only cable, when these are special and can be had cheap anywhere. Buy a nice 4$ standard one with the right power lead awg and you can use it for anything.
...or.. Crazy idea here. Get an Android charger?
Cutting up USB cables is a bad idea, especially shorting them out. The data pins are not supposed to be shorted, generally 200Ohms is expected.
They are suppose to be shorted with fast charge... the base normally does this on plug in on AC switch. A USB3 port also does this... all he did was make a charge only cable. With fast charge 2 though, you won't make it much past 1A this way, just like USB3. Why our stock cable has thick power lead AWG and the phone can reach 1.8A.

As I said, 200ohm, not shorted... Anyway.
unless the plugg that u connect the USB cable in i sent chortcircut it won't fast charge whatever cable u use. this is for making a charge cable to use with carcharger ore power packs. of u use a wallcharger it's 99% certain it is already chotend and u don't need this. but if u use the original cable (fastcharge) it won't fast charge in a power pack or car charger.
and I charge att same speed with this cable then original charger cable that came with the phone. measured 1.8a with this cable that's all my Powerpack can output. can probably go higher depending on how mutch the phone can use.
it's li-po so should be able to charge 0-100% in 20min but whill shorten battery life and don't think oer phones can handle it
I fast charge with 3 different cables. Again, it's the AWG. Facts don't lie. My power pack and car charger are pre shorted, so all good. If not pre shorted though, you are correct sir.
my wasn't that's why I made this. so no matter what cable used it won't fast charge. Som people also say u have to by a expensive cable with is bull####
if someone can provide a link with a preshortens cable... well then show it. unable to find any
It is legit. I did this with a car USB cable when I had my One X. It would only charge at USB rate (500ma) even though it was a 1A charger. Using navigation the battery would discharge faster than it charged. Tried various cables, and only got it to work by shorting the data pair. After that it charged AC at full 1A.

Not always. My car cigarette adapter is modded to short data pins. It fast charges all my other devices and even my tablets, but doesn't even charge my G2. It says its charging, no slow charging messages, but still depletes battery. Only way toncharge in my car is to use the second USB port that is unmodded, which slow charges. Annoying.
I still think there is a software bug limiting the charging speeds because you can get different speeds by plugging in the same cable mulitple times.

We aren't saying you are wrong, you are just doing something different. It's not about expensive, its about thickness for the combo usb cable. Just the awg. What your solution does is increase awg. They are called charge only cables (pre-post short). What people were searching for are COMBO cables. You are using/doing something different. Why titles are called "working USB" cables, not charge only. We already knew this. There is bugs. That was apparent in the voltage testing. Something in the kernel isn't playing right at all times. I have seen this on my car charger. With no change in conditions, I can sometimes charge 200mA's higher with a replug.

The included home charger for the G2 is rated at 1.8A -- use anything smaller, and you'll see the pop up warning on the phone that charging will be slow and that you should use the "official" charger.
My guess -- if you can find a car charger that actually will put out as much as the phone wants to draw (e.g., 1.8A), and THEN use your shorted data lines, you'll see fast charging of the G2 in your car.

The 3SIXT micro USB charger I have is rated to 1A not modded, just bog standard. When charging I checked the battery stats and it says AC charging. Now I don't know if it has the data pins pre-shorted, but it managed to boost my battery by 10% in under 20 minutes. The phone was idle, but that's not bad going for a 1A $10 charger.

not true have tried 3 other chargers 1.2 1.0 and 0.8 all say fastcharge (ac) with my modes cable. as long as it's over 500ma and with a cable with data pins shortend the slow charge warning is removed an the phone thinks it's charging from ac
charging my phone now with a Powerpack with 1a output and it says fastcharge (ac)
if I use the original cable it goes to slowcharging 500ma iv meshurd befor I put on the shrinking tube for isolation
and a car charger can output in theory 5-20a depending on your fuse in the car
the charging current is controlled by kernels in so phone. my old sensation u culd mod with a fastcharge Kernel so it never limited to 500ma always use max.
Samsung even has the ability to do a full charge in 30min but disabled in Kernel.
lg - g2 uses lipo battery's and culd actually be charged in less then 20min but if we do that u have to replace the battery every 6month at the best.
and lipo are extremely sensitive to over charge and the cells have to be charged with precision balans not to explode or swell.

slow charging?

Anyone find charging the Z3TC painfully slow? It takes me 6+ hours to get to full charge using the magnetic connector. Is it faster over USB? Is there anyway to see how much current is actually being drawn without root?
I'm charging using a USB wall wart, 5V/2A rating.
while charging, go to settings/about tablet/status and look what battery state is saying: "AC" means normal charging while "USB" says usb charging. The latter often is usualy limiting to 500mA. This would mean that your wallmart charge or your cable has the connectors wrong so that the device thinkgs it is on a normal pc-usb port.

3:50 for me to fully charge on magnetic stand.
magnetic charging
I also experience the same thing with the magnetic changer but when I use USB it does change it faster
I've noticed that as well! That it takes over 6 hours to charge up. It's very mysterious as to why though. I have the usb cord connected to a 5v/2a rated wall adapter, that takes forever to charge it with. Anyone know why or how to get it to charge faster?
So I ordered a bunch of stuff from ebay and amazon and am going to try a few things over the new few days to figure out the slow charging
1). charge using 5V/2A wall wart through a "charging" micro usb cable. This is one where the 3 data pins are not connected, only the 2 power pins. I have a rooted htc one m8 that can measure the charging current and will make sure this setup is capable of >500mA charging
2). same as above but use a micro usb to magnetic port adapter
3). charge using the official DK36 charging dock(not designed for the Z3TC as far as I know, it came with my xperia z2 phone, but the tablet fits in it and charges)
Since theres so many links in this chain(wall wart, usb cable, dock/mag port connector) I figure its worth seeing if one of them is a weak link
