Advise and help-android home screens and launchers - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all.
I have a Jiake Jk-760 running android 4.4.2 KitKat with a 5inch screen.
This phone looks very much like a Samsung Galaxy A5.
Whether it's a clone of the A5 or not I'm not sure but yes its a cheap Chinese thing but I don't spend big money on very good phones because they don't last me much more than 7-8 months (working in agriculture)
Anyway I want to strike a balance between battery life (which on this phone is so so) and displaying all the info I need on my home screen.
I just want people to share their experiences and advise as I appreciate any info anyone is willing to share!
Nova seems a battery drainer to me, running the standard built in lollipop theme and cLOCK weather widget.
Themer is a lagfest and Google now works fine.
What else can i try as I'm terrible for chopping and changing my set up almost daily?
Sent from my JK-760 using XDA Free mobile app

Seems if someone actually has one of these cheapy chinese things most people here seem to scream and head for the nearest jungle or very large forest, not to come out for 100 years until the Cheap Chinese handsets are long gone.
(said with a strong wind and a tumble weed blowing across the path)

Well I'm just going to say one thing.
Im not asking for anything and I'm not whinging as some like to say alot here.
I'm just making a regular users opinion and feed back.......
I'm using Nova 3.3 on my Jiake JK 760 running kit kat which is a Samsung galaxy A5 clone supposedly........
Since the 3.3 update Nova has become a real battery drainer.
I have nothing else installed.
Changed my launcher to Google now, bit more lag but no battery drain.
Nova never used to drain my battery but I do like the new design......some launchers are now so alike I can't tell the difference between them!
Let me say again, this is an opinion and I don't expect a lot of abuse back saying I'm wrong or others don't have the battery drain I experience, its an opinion and no one has to agree with it!
my battery life is usually 10 hours plus with data and WiFi enabled, not bad for a cheap Chinese Clone.
Just in case anyone decides to mention the fact I'm using Nova on a cheap Chinese phone, I also use it on a 2nd gen MotoG and a galaxy S running lollipop........ And Nova drains the battery far more than other launchers which are available.

How do you like your Razr?

Ive currently got a Droid Pro and have loved it.
I just went to my local VZ store yesterday because my wife is thinking about leaving sprint. Ive been on a family plan for the last 10 years haha and if I want to start my own family plan VZ will honor my grandfathered unlimited data on the new plan. AND they will honor unlim 4G as well!
So im thinking between the Razr and the Nexus that just came out yesterday.
Pros I see with the Razr
both front/rear camera are better
has hdmi
has sd card
same 1.2 processor
and should be one of the first phones to get ICS
any cons that I should know about?
How do you like your phone? How long have you had it?
Thanks everyone!
battery life during the first couple of days are bad. If you use it in very lite light areas with the screen playing something dimly lit you can see some splotches. seems like other bugs and complaints vary on how you use it. I absolutely love it. I will probably play with the galaxy nexus this weekend, but really would have to be blown out of water to trade it in.

Owned it 3weeks now. I want to sleep with it every night.
Unlock screen itself just make me happy. Like Steve jobs goal on ipad,it makes you want to use it

I have a launch optus Razr XT910 and i love it. Battery life is fantastic. Though the verizon model doesnt have good battery life apparently.
Some may find the size of the phone an issue, but after a couple of days i got used to it.
Excellent phone, I am more than satisfied. Battery life is by me much better then on my previous htc desire.

Battery life on mine is pretty sick. Averaging a full day no problem. Smart Actions help i guess.
I love the the razr, have had it about 3 weeks now. No issues with the screen and the battery is SO much better than my samsung fascinate! I went to check out the Gnex today. first at a verizon store, as I was holding it the security cord thing ripped the back right off. Then I checked it out again at the verizon kiosk in the mall, looked at the back and they had it TAPED on!! I asked if there was an issue with the back coming off (obviously there is, at least with the security device attached) and they played stupid... Other than that it seemed nice for sure, but didn't make me want to trade in. Although I was really digging the white razr Your wife would probably like it too.
The battery life sucks. I can't use 4g at all. The data dropping is enough to make me want to shove this phone down motorolas throat. Since I bought this phone at an authorized agent I can only exchange this phone back where I bought it.
Since I'm a trucker and currently out under a load I can't return the phone for something that works.

I'm really happy with my Razr. Although, I would probably get the nexus just because of Android 4.0 (if I had the chance, which I don't)
after owning sgs2(sold) and galaxy note(still owned) i don't think i can go back to samsung. razr built quality is exemplary compared to samsung.
it is a solid hardware, comparable to blackberry 9900 (which i also used). the only drawback is battery drain which is probably caused by an app.
I didn't. Buttons are chintsy and often break or stick, body is the size of an S2/Infuse but screen is 35% smaller, batt not replaceable, went through a number of phone replacements in the 3 wks I had one etc. In the end, it's JAP just another low res phone.
been using a mth plus, built Q is far superior den my previous S2 n note unless u like e plastic feel? so far asia unbranded set seems no problem compare to those branded telco set encounter.. luving it!!!
Well so far im pretty much liking what i hear.
The battery life might be an issue. But im assuming with updates and once it gets ICS that it should help with battery life.
no battery problem here
I don't know if it is just me, but I am getting great battery life thanks to juice defender. Use it, it helps.
just root it this afternoon, froze some stuff (there are a lot of background stuff running, no wonder battery is crap), will see what happens..should get better..
one thing is the battery level in 10%..should have been in 1% each..

Most stock roms don't render it in 1% increments.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda premium
Unbranded GSM RAZR owner here... the phone's hardware is really nice. The build quality feels solid, and the buttons are fine after two weeks worth of use, despite complaints of them breaking quickly by others.
On the other hand... the stock ROM is kinda iffy. The RAZR's RIL likes to cause the Android phone subsystem to FC if the radio is booted in poor signal conditions, and the BLUR apps, such as the Gallery and Music Player, love to freeze, reset themselves and generally misbehave. OTOH, the BLUR contacts app and dialer are fine, Smart Actions and Mobile Hotspot work really well, and Motorola's modified browser is actually marginally faster than the ICS browser on the almost-identically stacked Galaxy Nexus. To be honest, the Gallery and Music Player issues can be almost overlooked, as there are better alternatives on the Market.
Flash is smooth as butter - it's a smoother experience than running it on your average Atom-powered nettop with XP, for sure. Streaming video is no issue, though like in other OMAP4-powered devices, 1080p streaming is a no-no, which may disappoint those looking to hook up over HDMI.
You're going to struggle with battery life for certain in the first few days. It's not going to last more than 8 or so hours on it's first few charges. It's fine after that, and Smart actions will help, especially if coupled with JuiceDefender. This is coming from a GSM user though. I've heard that the LTE radio really takes it's toll on the Droid RAZR.
Overall, this device is a tidy little package, and I'm really pleased with it. I just wish that the BLUR apps weren't so broken. Especially as the Music player sounds so good, it's really annoying at how unstable it is.
This is the best Android phone ever.

[Q] do you recommend this phone??

I am plannng to buy the Motorola RAZR XT910....i have collected money for this and finally being able to buy it myself(college student )
so do you recommend this phone...my main concern is music and gaming...i dont mind bad battery or camera and all...i never use camera....
*should work HD games like Assassn's Creed and NFS and PES smoothly
*should have good music....i will also buy the JVC HA FX 101 earphones which are really good and use PowerAmp Full Verison
*should look good ...which the phone seems to positively satisfy
so do you recommend this phone??any bugs in this phone???plus Motorola rarely has and service centres in India and i live in Kolkata...that will not be a problem right...especially with you uys here?? :good:
Well battery isn't so great on the XT910, so gaming will be useless if you can't play.
It's an aging phone for smooth HD gaming.
I recommend another phone if you're buying unlocked.
I'd say it depends on what you have to pay for it.
I wouldn't pay more than €250/US$300 today as there are so many other interesting phones in the RAZR-like performance segment.
Nonetheless, I'm really happy with - especially since I put JB on it.
Screen resolution is OK for web browsing, performance is OK for 99% of what you use a phone for, battery and camera pretty good. The design is nice, it actually still looks and feels "fresh".
The only thing that is bothering me a bit is the spots you see on a black screen in low light. Seems like most RAZRs has this issue.
Oh yeah, the touchscreen goes nuts while the phone is on charge, which is pretty frustrating. Takes five times longer to type a message due to this.
If it's cheap comparing to comparable phones on your market then go for it
edit: Now I see you mention gaming. I can't say I've tried any demanding games and my bet would be there are a lot better phones if you want to do a lot of gaming
Hello. is a great phone. I have the MAXX and the battery life is impressive.
JB will only be available in few selected countries, excluding India, so it's better to look for an alternative. With regard to oomph to money ratio, I think Nexus 4 is a nice option - but it's dense screen may mean less FPS.
If you go with the maxx, go ahead. If you pick the standard, there are a lot of better alternatives for you in my place, razr maxx sold at 350$ currently.

This phone is not aged as noticed before, but Moto will discontinue it after jb 4.1.2 update. So i recomend to get razr m/razr hd/atrix hd(last is pretty good cause ips matrix and this looks amazing).

This smartphone is due for a service life of approximately two years at most, with unofficial (no Motorola) updates (CM10.1, AOSP and others ROMs by xda developers). If so, coupled with the price and will meet your needs ... then buy!
Sorry ... english by Google Translator.
I'll put it like this, if you're looking for a phone to spend over a year with at this point in the game, I recommend another phone.

LG G2 scene compared to Samsung

Hey there!
So I recently lost my Galaxy S4 (no questions asked, please) which I was very happy with. I played a lot around with different roms, kernels and stuff.
Now I'm thinking about getting the LG G2 because it seems like the cool new thing on the market. I notice, though, that there aren't really that big scene around for it - I really base that in the forum activity here on XDA. So I would like to know what people's experience is with this thing, especially if you've played around with the SGS4 as well.
A bit off topic in here - I would like to know how it is to root and mod, is it easily bricked? That's one thing I really liked on the Samsung phones in general.
Do you think there will be a bigger scene once it gets out to more people? And roms as well? I know it's hard to live up to the Samsung hype but still...
L8r!
Don't know what to tell you. This phone rocks. The battery the screen the form factor. Couple it with the latest cpu and Graphic ram (what ever that is). This phone packs the best spec right now. The camera is no slouch either with OIS it is up there with the best.
As for developments, this device is so ready. Right now there is root and twrp and CWM. Read it somewhere about kernel source is released (need to fact check on that). This device is more than ready for development.
But still people are waiting one the fence until the released of nexus 5 to make their choices.
But for me I have already made my mine with 3000mah vs 2300mah battery there is nothing nexus 5 can do to beat this.

This. Plus devs have already made announcements this past week that they're working on this phone. You'll be fine
I've had the S4 (twice), and it doesn't even compare to this phone. The S4 was an un-optimized piece of trash imo. This phone is the opposite where everything is quick and the features actually make sense.
The screen is better, performance is better and battery life is much better. Just grab this phone, you won't be disappointed.

Awesome phone, just got it, camera and vid are awesome, cam software could be improved a bit but really it's the best phone I've used, def like it better than s4.. and the nex5 battery is a deal breaker, coupled with an 8mp camera I read it's supposed to have... definitely G2.

You're going to love it! Now that I think about it, I haven't had a phone where just about everyone who I've asked is in love with it and raves about it this much (check the other forums S4, HTC One, Note 3, 5s etc)
The G2 is that good. I had the HTC One for a week & took it back to get the G2 once I saw it at the store & don't miss the One @ all. I even waited 2 extra weeks to get the white version.
I'm very particular about the phones I get & how I use them. Trust me, this one will also get put through its paces. In the short time I've had it, I can tell you, its no slouch, the battery is insane, it just won't die no matter what I try to do & this is on the stock ROM!!!!
All I've done it turn off Carrier IQ which you can do without Root! Whoa. You'll see in a few days when you get it.
P.S
There's a Dev on the forums who mentioned they're making ROMs for our phone. In a few weeks this place is going to be buzzing & you'll be amazed @ what your new phone can do

I don't normally jump into these types of threads but I have to voice my opinion. I've always been a Samsung fan and love their phones. I'm coming from a Galaxy Nexus and have had plenty of hands on experience with the S3. This phone easily trumps both, hands down. The speed of this phone is amazing, the screen is beautiful and not over saturated like the AMOLED displays, the features are endless (I've had the phone since Thursday and I'm still finding little things out) and development is sure to pick up soon. The rear button placement does take a day or so to get used to but with the Knock On feature I hardly ever press the power button. Go through the 30 Day Challenge videos on PhoneDog about the phone. Their biggest gripe is they claim the phone is TOO FAST!

niceto see the note cheats on all but one, LG only on 2.
Anyway whos to say these are cheats, if you run your mobile optimally by changing characteristics, it can hardly be called a cheat, its more optimalization.
also as its been debunked a thousand times over, benchmarks say nothing, its all about your percieved performance.
What is wrong with maxing out to phone setting before benchmark? It is not like they faked the score or anything. I remember my PC days when we used to freeze the cpu and overclock the **** out of it. That may be the extreme example but it is what your hardware is capable off.
-LG G2
Lets just say I'm surprised how good this phone is. The best smart phone I've every owned. My last phone was a GNex with stock 4.3.
Coming from the s4, the screen ALONE makes the G2 a winner to me. The outdoor performance of the g2 KILLS amoled.
Battery life is amazing. I average about 15 hours a charge. Heck, today I'm going on 13 hours since I unplugged it and got 47% battery left. (Location service turned off. I use an app called "smart shortcuts to give me a shortcut to location services for when I need Maps)
Performance wise, this is as smooth as 4.3 gpe ROM I was running on my s4. And that's STOCK.
those factors alone actually made rethink about rooting. But I needed to root to hide those dang on soft keys

I too must confess, (like anyone really cares), I have been a fan of the Galaxy line since they started making them, and I was impressed with both the S4 and N3; was even contemplating picking that up, since my wife and I were due for an upgrade in a few days, she is bent on going for the N3 so that was out of the question, (can't have us both walking around with the same phone), but then I came across the LG G2 on one of those comparison videos and immediately fell in love. After that I went searching for information all over, which brought me back here, because I knew that if this phone was really as hot as I thought it was then it was sure to be buzzing on this forum. And I'm glad to see you guys don't disappoint. You've helped me make my choice that much easier. And can't wait to get my hands on this phone in a few days.
I do have a few questions though:
Is the LG OS on top of the Android OS easy to deal with or is it cumbersome and superfluous?
Would I truly miss not having an micro SD card slot, or is the phone so much ****s and giggles that I won't even notice?
What was the longest time someone has gone without charging their battery, with a full assortment of apps running?

Galaxy s6 edge scrolling lag in browser, facebook etc.

Guys... I've seen a few discussions about this, but the threads got closed.
I've had almost all of the galaxy S series (S3, S4 and now S6 edge)
I'm having lags and stutters while browsing some sites and even scrolling in Facebook, especially when going into Comments and looking at the replies of comments.
I'm absolutely mind boggled that when with these specs there are stutters and lags. I've also got the nexus 4,which doesn't have any issues at all.
I was having a hard time deciding between an iphone 6 (or 6S in fall) the Galaxy S6, but ultimately chose the S6, because I just couldn't justify paying that kind of money for outdated specs of 2 years ago. (Well I now have to admit specs are not everything)
I thought I wouldn't have to root my phone etc. because it'll run awesome out of the box, but that's not the case...
My galaxy S4 is almost running on par with the S6 though admittedly It's rooted and running an awesome custom rom.
I never used to care that much for micro lags and a bit of stutter, but you'd think they would have sorted it out by now with these monster specs and with this premium price now it always freaks me out if I see lags..
Otherwise it's really a beautiful phone with a mind blowing Camera. Though I still don't see the point why they went with such a high resolution for the display. ( if I take a picture on the S6 and send it to my s4 you can hardly spot a difference besides color accuracy and brightness, would rather have better battery with a lower res screen)
Anyone know a way to solve the scrolling problem? ( I tried 0.5 animation and factory reset to no avail)
Please don't shut down this thread like the other one, because it is a real issue!

Thanks for your response
And I'm sure it's possible to get rid of lag with root and debloating/custom roms. I had lots of fun doing all these things in the past, but now I just want a phone that just works out of the box. It's just frustrating, that with such specs, the premium price and it being 2015 you still have to do those things. And it's become a headache to always look for things that are draining your battery in standby and use stuff like greenify. And with "Powersaving location" apps polling way to often instead of giving them a certain timeframe to do so. (I think Sony did that with the stamina mode )
Well I guess that's the way it is. Maybe I should consider another phone after so many years of android.

The lag that occasionally occurs is solely due to the memory leak in lollipop and should be fixed officially in a future software update. Don't give your hopes up too quickly. Also, android is still better than ever on this phone.

I think it's more to do with the app quality and them not being optimized for specific phones. I mean they have to work on flagship phones as well as on budget 150$ phones. Well anyway let's just hope for the best... thanks anyway
And I saw somewhere that touchwiz 5.1.1 has a built in greenify :thumbup:

I sent back my S6, because of some cosmetic problems and have to use the Nexus 4 to bridge the time it is back. Updated my S6 to 5.1.1. It was better, but still has RAM -issues and lags in the browser and especially Facebook app.
Using my Nexus again (admittedly with a custom rom) I have no scrolling lag at all. It´s so frustrating a 2,5 Year old device is faster at tasks than the spec-monster which is the Galaxy S6. #Sorryforrant

I installed Extreme Syndicate. It was just updated a day and a half ago to V8. It is on the Verizon Android Developement subforum. It has the memory patch applied, has the Alliance framework installed, a custom boot animation, and has many system apps removed (but not as many as V5)
seriously, i hate this phone for so many reasons, but lag never occurred to me specially when browsing,
i am using boat browser Pro, never used any other browser, and every thing is smooth as my iphone 6 side by side.

The only downside from my own experience is that the reception is a lot worse than other phones. Mine often gets no signal in places where other phones can still get by with a few bars. After all, it is Samsung's first phone with metal frame.

Thanks for that! That's actually a big deal breaker.
I've never had issues with signal. ialso switched from 5s to alpha. honestly the only downside is the software updates. i still haven't received the lollipop update.
but still an amazing and beautifull phone
Thanks. I thought lollipop has been out for a while now....
s5 sukssss alpha is the king
Care to elaborate?

As far as design and functionality. The Alpha and the 5S is very similar. The alpha has a bigger screen (4.7 inches) and battery (1850 mah) but it "feels" the same as a 5S.
Some could care less about the lollipop update because of some lag issues and battery drainage. So if you have an international version kit kat 4.4.4 will be the latest OS for you until Samsung releases the lollipop update. The att version "may" update automatically upon boot but you can always skip the download part and stick with kit kat until you're ready.
If the alpha is your first Android phone there will be a learning curve going from ios to Android. Specially with the Samsung touchwiz skin. Some playing with the phone should remedy that.
Good luck!!

Thanks for that informative response!
I like small phones, can't understand the monsters which people use these days... Held the alpha was amazed by is portability.
Also, ergonomics is really under-rated these days. Surprised the alpha didn't get more traction.
Moving to galaxy alpha is a good decision.
Compact phone + better performance + better camera (better than iP6)
Regarding the battery.. I already countered it just bought spare battery and spare battery charger from online store.
The good thing about having a spare battery and spare battery charger is avoiding charging thru phone which is resulting to being a wall hugger and limited movements of course you can't just move anywhere while having usb cord connected to ac to your phone.
Charging thru spare battery charger is approximately 2 hours but you can use the battery for 12 hours or more, just plug it and forget it well atleast for 2 hours
Or If you have a power bank just put it in your bag.
According to gsmarena.com the galaxy alpha's battery test
click
52hours, so having 2 batteries then just doble the result
Really good looking phone, extremly economic battery saver electronic, better camera than most of the phones, really fast cpu and gpu.

Thank you all, this has been helpful.
Anyone knows where I can pick one of these (must be the international F model) online for a good price (any condition, any color)?
Thanks!

Amazon has them but still expensive (around $400) you can try
Ebay or even swappa.
Word of warning, if youre planning to use the g850f, it does not support 4g lte on att or t-mobile only 3g or h+ I believe double Check the specs to be sure.

I have both alpha and 5s. 5s still more smooth & responsive than alpha. I dont think there are any android phones that are as responsive as ios devices yet considering the alpha is one of quickest android phone ive tried.

Thanks for that! I can imagine. Honestly, iOS is faultless. I don't think I have ever seen a piece of software so honed together like iOS.
That being said, I am tired of the small display, not willing to shed 500 on the 6, and so the Alpha came to mind.
Yup. I'd still pick the alpha over the 5s anyday. Youll love the versatility of android and possibly also the amoled screen. The screen size of the alpha is perfect. I came from lg g2 and did not like the 5" at all.
On antutu the alpha scores higher(53k) than the 5s(40k). But real world usage iphone still flawless.
For aesthetics i prefer the alpha as well. I think it looks better than the s6.

If you can find the Exynos International Version it is faster with better Audio.
Alpha is excellent, rugged little Phone.
I use 850M International on Metro PCS/ Tmobile and I notice low signal often but call quality and stability is good even with low signal in Stores and even elevators.
