Signal rolling back to 2g on every call. - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Any idea how to fix this. It doesn't drop the calls, but constantly goes back to 2g on calls even in good 3g areas. Wouldn't be a problem except for the HD calling goes off and it gets annoying going from good audio in calls to muffled 1990s quality.
Anyone else have this?

Should add I'm in uk and on o2 using XEU fw (O2U fw does same)
Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk

Ask other o2 users in your area. Most likely, this is a carrier issue in order to save (their) bandwidth. The reasoning is that most users won't be able to tell the difference in call quality anyway.
Here in Brazil, ALL carriers do this.

Every other phone works fine and will keep a 3g signal.
Tested OK on
Xperia z, z2,z3, HTC one, galaxy alpha, iPhone 5s
All using o2 all keep HD audio in call fine.
Just have to live with it I guess.

Poor 3G voice quality?

So, there have been reports from a few users (including myself) on a swedish android forum that they are experiencing really poor sound when calling over 3G, while calls using "GSM only" are clearer and sound "richer". Anyone else experiencing this?
Feel free to make a test call, turn off 3G and try again. And then post your results here.

This is the first phone I've had (at least in recent memory) where someone asked me what I was talking on because it sounded terrible. I tried setting to gsm only but it's not any better. I left myself test voice messages and I would best describe it as sounding muffled.
maybe its you guys network/area that causing problems. Havent had this issue with ATT in florida or georgia.
Yes, I'd love the 2 original posters to say what networks they are on....hopefully that is the cause. This doesn't seem to be too widespread.
Orange in France. I don't now how other people hear me but their voice definitely sounds muffled. It was much better with my Nexus One or my 30$ motorola F3.
Wow, I have the opposite. People actually have, without prompting, asked me if I was calling from a landline because my voice was so clear. Between the G2, G2X, and SGS2 the Galaxy performs best (for me) as a phone.

I'm om the swedish carrier Telia. On the other forum, people have reported the same issue with Tele2. However, I doubt it's a network issue, since Sweden has a rather stellar mobile network, both speed- and coverage-wise. Especially compared with the U.S. ;-)
Also, I haven't been able to reproduce this with my 3GS.
Judging from the posts here, though, it seems like a Europe only issue at the moment, right?

No, its the phone. I tested it in the shop in Amsterdam with Tele2 (T-Mobile) and KPN SIMs calling back to a fixed line. In each case the calls were noticeably muffled.
The GSM call quality on the i9000 was not very good, but passable. In my opinion the i9100 call quality is poor, especially compared to the i9000. My 45 Euro Nokia phone has far clearer sound.
I think people have to bear in mind, that these types of phone are not designed with call quality in mind. These are computers with a voice calls as a bolt on. I know that we don't think that this should be the case, but sadly it is. If you want to talk then I suggest Nokia.
However, I shall still buy the i9100 as its a great phone other than call quality. I hope that this will be addressed by the time I buy one.
same here in austria with my sgs2 from 3AT.
there is always a background noise when calling with 3g, on gsm it isn't

Signal loss on EE UK S3s?

I'm based in NE England and work in an office with 5 other S3 users all of which are on EE. 2 bought Sim free phones and use an originally Orange Sim, one has a branded Orange phone and one has a branded TMobile one. The other person has a Tmobile 4G phone. The only one that isn't stock is one of the Sim free phones (mine)
All but the 4G phone lose signal several times a day but show 3 bars. There is no data connection and the phones cannot make or receive calls. If they are reset or toggled between 3G & 2G then they work again for a while.
This behaviour happens at work and at home. No other phone user has this problem - there are a few iphone & non smartphone users who gloat constantly
Anyone else suffering as badly as us?
All fine here. Sim free phone under TM contract.
Under carrier it says either TM/Orange never EE for some strange reason.
Exynos SIII; CM10.1
why not post in the help section?
Try different modems and make sure ril/modem match
Here's your answer: EE sucks!!
Lots of people reported signal loss on many different devices, I'll blame EE not S3s.... I've got one of my phones on Orange and since EE showed up, I'm experiencing signal problems as well. Many times people trying to call me, my phone shows full reception but is unavailable and voice mail kicks in!!!! It's annoying but this behaviour is a Network fault. Nothing to do with phone imho.
The only thing you can check is Baseband version (modem) of all phones and compare to the one which works fine. Maybe all except one have wrong modems installed. Unlikely but can happen
Next time use Q&A section to post your problems or questions..

Has everyone changed their APN to 'everywhere'? No signal problems here in the south - getting four bars, H+ and 12Mbps data speed.
I'm in the south also, no problems here, in fact excellent!
I get bandwidth issues and signal drops. Been on orange & tmobile for years and it only became an issue with the arrival of EE.
Most of the time the signal/speed is great tho.
I'm north west UK
Worth trying one check correct network settings and two try different modems .

Radio/Signal Issues and Dropped Calls

So, I've been tweaking this, playing with PRL's and working with some of the RF engineers I know at Samsung and Sprint, but I wanted to see if anyone else is having problems like this.
1- You have solid signal strength, but continuously drop calls 5-10 seconds after connecting.
2- Your signal strength and data connection type fluctuates rapidly while stationary. (LTE to 3G or no data connection at all, often times with bars going to zero before immediately changing technology type)
3- Showing good signal strength until you push send on a call, then bars drop to zero, call fails, then you show good signal again.
I never had great signal at my house, but at least I had 1 bar and could make and receive calls. Since I got the Note 3, my signal strength looks great, but issue #1 from above happens 100% of the time. My wife's iPhone 5 and daughters LG Optimus do not have this problem.

My coverage actually improved when I got the note 3

I was having the same issue of 5-10 second drop calls. Exchanged phones and same issue still so returning the phone altother to sprint until the fix the issue. The tech at the sprint store told me Sprint and Samsung looking at ways to resolve the issue, but I have no patience for a phone that can't make phone calls... Going back to my SGS2.
I have yet to get a LTE signal on this, my third Note 3. I'm at places that I know for a fact have LTE but this piece of crap won't pick it up. This phone has me so aggravated already.
Sent from my SM-N900P using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Do you have the sim card in there activated? LTE operates over the SIM card, I removed my sim card for testing and it would not pick up any LTE signal whatsoever. Also make sure your account has LTE activated as well.
I am having the same issue with my 3G signal also, I even got a unable to connect to data network message very strange and I can't update my prl the normal way just flash them, i called sprint technical support and they told me to switch between cdma\lte to cdma only and keep it like that for a few minutes then switch back.
Sent from my SM-N900P using xda app-developers app
had the same issue the first 3 days that I got the phone...has improved a lot on the last 4 days....after multiple restarts and PRL updates
Sprint had sent me an Airave device, so I'm going to test with that over my home internet as backhaul. If it works fine, the network is the issue. If the same things still happens, it's the phone that's the problem. I suspect network, but I'll keep everyone updated.

I had three Note 3's. All had the same voice signal issues.
I bought the first phone on the day of release. When I got home, I noticed that on a connected call, the voice I heard popped and had varying signal distortions. I returned it on the 5th, and repurchased another.
Same problem. It's only during a connected call, not when listening to music, video or recorded voice. Thus, I posted a meagre on the Sprint community forum regarding voice popping, distortions and morphing.
Sprint Note 3 people nation wide began stating they also had the problem. My third Note 3 also had the problem. I returned the phone until the problem is fixed.
I did get 4GLTE briefly in one location, but for the most part, I get 3G only. I did notice that the DATA signal/antenna is slightly better than the Note 2, which is the phone I've reverted back to.
Sprint has been active in that message thread, stating they are working closely with Samsung for a fix. Some have posted that they've received a call from Sprint informing them that an update is due out the week of the 28th. Sprint Technical support confirmed an update is coming out but wouldn't commit to a timeframe.
The voice signal issues are not present during two conditions: roaming, and VOIP calling.
Take care
John
You are correct on the device update. I worked with some engineers at sprint and Samsung and an updated build is being pushed out now in waves that is to correct call audio, blue tooth audio and dropped calls, along with minor system tweaks to correct random reboots that have been reported.
If you're rooted or have modified recovery that tripped the counter, you will need to either return to stock for the OTA or wait for a dev to make a flashable version.

I am on MJ4 now and the voice quality is a lot better now but I'm still getting dropped call though. I also got a message from sprint a few days ago that they are working on towers i my area. I noticed if i go to a different side of the city, that i don't get these dropped calls at all. It is definitely sprints/vision upgrades that are messing up all the phone calls. Some towers are old technology and some are new so they can't communicate with each other from what i have observed.

Dropping calls like crazy
Just throwing in my observation:
I am also experiencing dropped call issues with my Sprint Note 3. I was on baseband MI5 and I just upgraded to MJ4 today. The issue is still there and calls drop sometimes 5 seconds in (while ringing) other times it will happen 2-3 mins into a call. I am lucky if I can hold a call for 5 minutes.

Can phone signal be boosted?

3g/4g signal is terrible. 2g is fine. Im on three UK network and my old Xperia z3 had better signal, my nexus 6 had amazing signal. I really want to love this phone but im having more and more issues with it.

Cellular LTE signal strength on EU A2017G

This is my second ZTE Axon 7 and I've had it for 5 days. I am located in the UK. The first was returned to Amazon UK due to short battery life in early August.
This one was purchased from Amazon Germany.
When I get an LTE/4G signal on my EE UK mobile SIM in my new AXON it can stay connected to 4G for several hours.
This is sitting at the same location in the office where I work, suddenly it then goes straight to slow GSM and stays on it for some time. Then it may go back to 4G after some time.
Whereas the same EE SIM inserted in my OnePlus 2 phone in the same location gives a consistent LTE/4G signal all the time.
Since the AXONi can maintain a 4G signal for several hours surely that implies the 4G reception hardware is OK.
I hope a firmware fix is possible to improve the reception?
No I don't think that this fact alone would mean any problem. All my other phones behaved in similar way in my office. Whether a phone can stay connected to a tower depends not just on the phone. Rather it depends on the provider. For instance if it think that other needs more bandwidth in that moment it can drop you to another tower. I don't know the full details but I know that there is sophisticated logic behind this behavior. On the other hand I don't want to stay that everything is OK with the software in Axon.
This phone has signal strength issues compare the db to another phone you will see it is much worse on Axon 7
People who don't have this problem are still taking the trouble to log in and write a little message telling people who do have the problem that they are imagining it or that all phones have signal issues. The person who told me it was quite normal that my phone was defective when I was asking about other people's experiences has posted quite a few times about this. Why? God knows, maybe nothing good on Netflix in his or her region.
You know, the ones that tell you they get 9 hours screen-on time when your battery drain, that professional photographers think the rubbish camera on such and such a phone is great and that they dropped their phone on concrete from ten feet up and it didn't smash...
Ignore them. I sent mine back because the signal was bad, booting me off LTE and on to Edge far too often. I'll buy it again in a while and see if I get a better one or even sooner if ZTE announces a fixes or admits they had quality control problems with a minority of units
I'm inclined to agree. There is a reception issue at least on some phones. Hard to know if it applies to all phones, with some people finding it good enough. I'm holding out for the next firmware update to see if it is worth buying again.
Is there a thread like this for A2017U? Wondering how it works on Straight Talk using the CDMA side.

I have the A2017U on Straight Talk - buy the 99 cent "bring your own phone" sim card from the straight talk website. Once you put the sim card in it update the APN and (I cannot stress this enough) TURN OFF VOLTE in the settings menu. Far and away this is the best phone I have ever had as far as reception goes.

I had weak signal reception issues with VoLTE turned on - I think the phone just wouldn't switch over from LTE to HSPA with VoLTE on. Without it trying to use the VoLTE it switches over just fine. Since I shut off the VoLTE I can't find a spot anywhere I go now with no signal, and I go out into rural areas without reason for coverage in them A LOT. My Zenfone 2 use to lose signal all the time. My Axon 7 never seems to.
I just switched it off I'll shall see how it goes. Hopefully it works better than it did. I would like to stay with AT&T. The extra data is nice.

On the A2017U it is located in settings - wireless & networks - more. Don't know if it is in the G model (Is it just me or is 99% of the problems with this phone only on the G model?)
